Various broomrapes (Orobanche spp.) from the last week - parasitic plants in the family Orobanchaceae. I didn't sit down and key any of these out but I'd wager at least a fair chunk of them are ivy broomrape (O. hederae). Love these weirdos

Strigolactones, which occur in about 80% of plant species, are a group of terpenoid lactones (see Figure 15.8H) that were originally discovered as host-derived germination stimulants for root parasitic plants, such as the witchweeds (Striga spp.) and broomrapes (Orobanche and Phelipanche spp.) (Figure 15.15).

A summer evening stroll and close encounter with a triffid
NATURE NOTES: Our latest ambling ramble for readers took place last month on what for many would be the familiar territory of Roundshaw Downs. Yet with expert guidance, we were still able to discover one of nature’s more bizarre plants. Photographs (unless stated) by ANNABEL SMITH It had been a while. In 2022, our loyal reader will recall, we had run a photo diary through the year based around…

tried something interesting for this!
I thought a little too hard about vintage and olm and possession and parasitic plants and felt something in my head faintly burst into flames (rambling under the cut)
the plants featured here are parasitic plants! we have mistletoe, strangleweed, ghost's pipe, and broomrape. they're all plants that can parasitize trees, although technically I think ghost's pipe grows from the fungus that grows on trees' roots. nature is wonderful and specific like that
I think possession can be a lot like parasitism. an unwelcome guest, sapping your control of your body, using you as a means to an end. vintage is there, but someone else is too. mistletoe in her hair, strangleweed growing up her limbs, ghost's pipe and broomrape sprout at her feet. foreign plants among the apple blossoms. eventually, will she be overgrown completely?
also: an alt! since I can't quite decide whether I like the background or not.

All these riverside plants he knows like the growths of his own body. Acrid stinking-hellebore, its green petals dyed crimson at the rims. Fleshy toothwort, the colour of a muddy white pig. Broomrape, wrinkled and brown. Henbane, whose veins run blood. In winter stinking-hellebore appearing before any other plants were in bloom and the only colour in the visible world was the orange and red of willow and dogwood at the water’s edge.
Robert Drewe, from The drowner (Macmillan 1996)
