every time I see people talking about post-canon one piece and about how the strawhats all go their separate ways it makes me want to start climbing walls and gnawing on the plaster!!!! what do you Mean the found family is going to split up... what do you mean they don't sail together forever... how else are they supposed to satisfy that itch under their skin... who else is meant to understand them... who else has seen their most agonizing moments and their best victories...

Assorted One Piece Modern AU HCs
The Whitebeard Pirates are all part of a shelter/relief/mutual aid network for drug users, unhoused people, and vulnerable youth. Ace looks up to them all immensely and volunteers part time, but he's still very much on a journey of self discovery and healing
Ace is a massive music nerd and hobbyist with a near encyclopedic knowledge of genre histories and subcultural spaces. He goes to a lot of local acts his friends are involved in, plays the drums and bass and hangs out at Brook's recording studio/jams with him from time to time while he's in town (Brook loves Luffy and his family, and he's just happy to entertain young people who make or love music and let them use the space). He's undecided in his major but kinda leaning toward sociology or social work.
(Rayleigh is his prof, and unbeknownst to him, a college buddy/old flame of his bio parents who recognized him immediately and has no clue what to do with himself.)
Sabo is, of course, a socialist student organizer in a poli-sci/law program and interning at Dragon's practice (grassroots activist turned civil rights lawyer). The ASL brothers live together in a shitty apartment with barely any heat. He's secretly a massive film snob and organizes Radical Documentary Screenings with Koala from time to time.
Dadan has a cabin like 2 hours outside the city in the mountains and the brothers crash there every now and then over the holidays. She's retired now and constantly gripes about having to feed and shelter her stupid kids every time they come home but she still gets teary whenever she watches them go. Their childhood bedroom and three bunk beds are perfectly preserved and cleaned, and she wouldn't ever dream of moving Ace's posters or Sabo's old bookshelf and criterion DVDs or Luffy's plushies and taxidermied insects.
Brook's band is a genre-blending indie darling that occasionally tours the country. I'm definitely not the first one to think of this, but Laboon is a Newfoundland with severe separation anxiety and Brook has to bring him on tour or to half of the group outings. The Rumbar Pirates are a local jazz act he performs with from time to time, and he may or may not have dated Calico Yorki.
Usopp (fresh out of high school) only recently reconnected with his father and they've been having awkward family dinners with Kaya but it's getting less weird having Yasopp around. He babysits the Usopp Pirates part time and they love him to pieces; he's low-key interested in studying Botany and horticulture and has been checking out local degrees and training programs.
Franky's in the middle of an auto mechanic apprenticeship and is debating trying to get into a mech eng program at Robin's university; he was raised by Tom as a carpenter, and has worked as one for a really long time, but he's increasingly getting into engines and inventing things and the family's very supportive. Robin's a Masters student doing an hourly TA thing in Clover's class on Archaeology of the Void Century, and they're married.
Sanji, naturally, works at the Baratie and Zeff lets him brainstorm and test daily specials or set menus for holidays. He and Pudding are in the same patissier courses at culinary school (she's obviously a baking major); they're exes who've stayed friends and care deeply for each other. The ASL brothers sometimes pick up shifts at the Baratie (with the exception of Luffy who broke way too many dishes)–Zeff really likes all of Sanji's friends and dumps leftovers on them

musician!sanuso au in which usopp is a very famous singer (by 'very famous' meaning: being famous in specific, indie circles but, yeah, famous. he has a decent amount of fans) under the name of "sogeking" and sanji (who thinks, by the way, that he's extremely straight) falls in love with him and his voice. important fact: usopp wears the sogeking costume, so sanji doesn't know what he looks like.
basically, sanji is friends with robin, and franky (her boyfriend) knows a guy (brook) that can get them all (luffy and zoro too) tickets to see this sogeking guy. sanji doesn't actually want to go, if he's being honest, but it's robin's idea so of course he says yes. the thing is- she- she likes weird music, alright? her taste is a bit different from sanji's and he isn't sure about spending all night listening to some guy whispering weird stuff into a mic with a bit of an 80s energy and dark undertones. but, yeah, robin asks, so he goes.
on the other hand, usopp only wears the costume because he's always an anxious, insecure mess, and refuses to let others know he's the one singing. the only thing his father left him before going away was a guitar and the guy can't even play it now in front of others. awesome. and he never really intended to become "famous", it's just that kaya, nami and vivi (he's childhood best friends with kaya and met nami/vivi in high school) told him to participate in a music contest and one thing led to another and now he has a manager and plays for a lot of people who actually want to listen to him. he isn't complaining, but he's glad he's wearing a mask.
so, sanji goes to see sogeking.
and it kind of, sort of, definitely changes his life.
he's glad zoro is already chugging his third beer and does not care enough to look at sanji, because otherwise he would see the complete blushing mess he's been reduced to while listening to sogeking sing.
he falls in love. it can only be that. he keeps telling himself that it's just his voice. that it doesn't mean he likes men. but he knows the feeling of love all too well to ignore the way his heart is pounding against his chest with the sound of the drums.
he's fucked. he knows he's fucked. it's not just a fan thing. fuck. he wonders if this sogeking guy kisses the same way he sings.
the night goes on and he's hypnotized by sogeking, but it doesn't mean he isn't having a fucking crisis. the last song is playing when one of his friends asks him what is wrong with him (he doesn't remember who it is, maybe franky) and those simple words send him over the edge. because no, he's not fine. and no, he doesn't like a man. and god, he definitely isn't in love with a guy he doesn't even know and would never recognize without a mask.
which is a funny thought, having in mind what happens next.
sanji storms out of the concert to catch his breath because this has never, ever happened to him before. he believes in love at first sight. he's a romantic, after all. but this isn't it. this isn't about looks or fate. it's deeper than that. he can't get rid of sogeking's voice still playing in his mind. so he ends up in what seems to be an alleyway in the back of the building, and anxiously starts to smoke like the addict he is. he said he was going to quit this... he definitely isn't now.
oh, but he misses the way sogeking finishes his last song and runs away from the stage. he feels he's going to throw up. too many looks on him. too much noise. too much pressure. not even nami can stop him before he ends up in the same alleyway as sanji, leaning against the door and taking deep breaths. in and out in and out in and ou-
and well. fuck. turns out he isn't alone because now the most handsome guy he has ever laid his eyes upon is trying to guide him through his panic attack, which only causes him even more anxiety. he wants to kind of die right now, because at least he'll die staring at an angel.
sanji, on the other hand, just has the need to help him because he understands how fucked up these things are. so he helps him through it. helps the stranger calm down until they can finally speak properly together.
usopp thanks him, sanji says that it was nothing. and usopp says something like: "i'm sorry you had to, uh, help me. it's just- sometimes crowds are just too much, you know? people expect so much from you sometimes and you just can't take it. there are so many people here. why? it's not- fuck. i feel so damn isolated sometimes. i- i'm sorry. you probably don't want to hear-"
to which sanji responds with: "no. it's fine. i understand. i think i do."
"really?"
"really."
their friendship starts with relieved laughs of understanding and a panic attack in an alleyway after the concert that changed their lives.
they exchange numbers for some reason. maybe it's still the rush of the concert a few seconds ago or the sogeking inside of him, but usopp is the one to ask him. sanji seems a bit surprised, but doesn't mind in the slightest to keep seeing usopp. it might sound cheesy, but the cook seriously thinks they were meant to find each other. friendships are weird all the time and he has always been very poetic, after all.
i'm not gonna bore all of you with what happens in between because this is just a random thought i had on my way home from work, but basically:
sanji and usopp become close. almost even best friends. and usopp is completely head over heels for sanji, so of course he will never tell him about being sogeking. not only because it's an identity only his best friends know about, but because it's embarrassing, and refuses to lose what he has with sanji for this. sanji loves usopp. they're practically best friends now! and- and, well, okay. he has to admit there's something between them that he can't put a name to, but it's more than an intimate friendship. and, somehow, he seems to never be able to let go of sogeking. so he never makes a move on usopp. he's stupid for being in love with someone he doesn't even know, but sanji is a romantic, after all.
there will never be somebody else. he keeps saying that. it's sogeking for him.
usopp is glad sanji is always busy when he has concerts, so that way he doesn't need to lie to him and cancel any plans! (the truth is, sanji goes to those same concerts all the time and usopp never happens to see him because sanji is always afraid of being recognized. in theory, nobody knows about him being so head over heels for the singer. his friends don't know he's there, either).
but one day usopp recognizes him in the crows (it was just a matter of time) and instead of getting all anxious and running away like he thought he would if this happened, he just keeps singing for sanji and only sanji. and if the cook notices this, he doesn't move from where he's standing. he's hypnotized.
long story short, usopp has a crisis because he doesn't know if he should tell sanji the truth, now that he knows he's a fan of sogeking. because sogeking is this cool superhero singer and of course sanji likes him. but would he like him if he knew who he truly is? so he refuses to say anything, even if the girls keep telling him to be honest. and sanji is having a whole crisis because he's extremely in love and they haven't even fucking talked (little does he know haha). and, besides, there's usopp too. he- he really likes usopp too, he realizes. romantically. it could be love, if it wasn't for sogeking.
and i'm going to be honest with all of you, i have no idea what is going to happen. but even if i knew i wouldn't tell you because i like it enough to be a fanfic and y'all are probably going to have to wait.

One Piece Modern Parents AU
Luffy → Garp
Zoro → Mihawk
Nami → Bell-mere
Usopp → Kaya's parents
Sanji → Zeff
Chopper → Hiriluk
Robin → Crocodile
Franky → Tom
Brook and Jinbei are someone's family friends, everyone's uncles
Ace being raised by Shanks, asked by Rouge, and when Ace and Luffy become friends and then brothers at school, Luffy starts looking up to Shanks
Dragon works for some sort of public service and when he finds out about Sabo, helps him get out of his home and simply gives him to Garp or Shanks because Sabo is friends with Ace and Luffy
Robin was just found by Crocodile on the street after O'Hara was burned (rather than an island O'Hara was a block of apartments known to house PhD students) and he just kind of took her in
Hiriluk is old friends with Kureha and so she's auntie Kureha
After Bell-mere is killed in gang violence, her old friend Corazon takes in Nami and her sister, alongside Law who he's been looking after for a while by that point
Zoro's parents died young and when Mihawk heard from his old friend (Kuina's dad) that this young boy who trained so hard at the dojo was in foster care, Mihawk figured a second kid wouldn't hurt
Mihawk also cares for Perona, his "friend" Moria is prone to taking long trips and forgetting his daughter can't fend for herself so several years ago he just gave her a key so she could come over whenever she needed - Moria doesn't seem to have noticed
Yassop got into an injury at work that left him unfit to care for his son. When his best friend and crush's parents offered to care for Usopp for him while he recovered as best as he could, Yassop jumped at the chance. He visits regularly, which is how Usopp meets Luffy, long before they started school
Franky and Robin are a little older than the others, and have been friends for years now. Both were outcast by their peers. Much like canon, despite their age difference, Luffy simply decided they were his friends now. At first they were unsure, since Luffy and his friends were so young, but it turns out Crocodile knows Mihawk and Shanks and so she decides it's okay. It's only by chance that they hadn't met sooner, really
Sanji got into Zeff's care after running away. He was a retired private investigator so with the power of favours and connections, he managed to adopt Sanji. It was always in his plans to go back for the kid's siblings, eventually. But, without them admitting to any harm, he had little to go on.
Brook knew Shanks when they were younger. He'd admired Roger and found out one of his "kids" went to the same school as him. They became acquaintances, and over time friends. He met Ace after Rouge died, and became uncle Brook.
Jinbei knows Mihawk and Crocodile from work. He's a similar age to them, so serves in the uncle role much like Brook does. He's known Robin and Zoro since they were taken in, though never realised the kids hadn't met.

Do you ever think about how in all of their childhoods, the strawhats were all loved?
Maybe not by their birth parents, and maybe not right away, but they were loved by someone. Not a single one went without love in their entire childhood.
I think about it a lot

In honor of Valentine’s Day let’s talk about how our favs are celebrating.
Robin and Franky and spending a quiet day together. Robin is reading while Franky is working, but they are in each others space. Robin is seated near his work or if possible/comfortable resting against him (siting in his shoulder, leaning against him ect) occasionally while Franky is working he will ask Robin for a hand and several will sprout up and help him work. It’s peaceful. And they are just enjoying each other’s presence.
Chopper joins them at some point to read with Robin. Just enjoying the quiet.
Nami and Vivi are sending love letters to each other. Nami has attached a few maps she’s drawn so Vivi can see where they have been. Vivi has sent over Nami’s favorite thing (Berris) as well as an expensive necklace. (She knows her girlfriend’s tastes) they are the only couple who consistently remember and celebrate the holiday.
Usopp has written a letter to Kaya detailing to her his great adventure. He’s been meaning to send a letter recently. And if it just so happens to be on Valentine’s Day that is no one’s business but his own! (Nami told him her plans for Vivi and he recognizes a good idea when he hears one) Kaya loves it and wishes she had a secure way to send him letters back.
Zoro and luffy don’t celebrate. They aren’t the sort of people who need a special day to show their affection. They show their loyalty and devotion to one another daily. Why plan for a special day that holds no significance to either of them. Zoro trains like normal.
Luffy however has plans, while he might think it’s silly to set aside a special day just for romance, he will absolutely take any excuse to love on his Namaka. He’s running around the ship make sure he spends time with each of his Namaka. He plays games with Chopper and Usopp. He checks in and sits with Robin and Franky for a while. Franky tells him about the new invention he’s working on, Robin tells him about her new book. And while Luffy isn’t the best a focusing he tries his hardest, it is a ‘special day’ to celebrate his special people. He finds his way to Nami and sits with her as she finishes her next letter to Vivi (the valentines letter was sent days ago to arrive on time) he asks her to tell Vivi hi for him. He slips into the kitchen and sits with Sanji while he cooks (Sanji might slip his captain some snacks it is a ‘special day’ after all) he find Brook and sings some sea shanties with him. He spends some time sitting with Jimbei just enjoying each others company. Eventually he makes his way up to the crows nest with Zoro and spends the rest of the day with his first mate, helping him train or distracting him from training.
Sanji has a love hate relationship with the day. He loves the opportunity to show his devotion to his crewmates especially the beautiful ladies on the crew (and his captain) but he is also reminded that he is alone. He’s happy for his friends but also longs for the day he can have that happiness as well. It helps that Luffy spends some time with him in the kitchen, it’s hard to feel alone when your sunshine captain is sitting with you. Even harder when a delivery arrives from the Baratie with fresh ingredients and a note from the old geezer talk about special valentines meal (Zeff just wants his son to know he loves him and food has always been the way they communicated) Sanji knows one day he’ll find someone. For know he focus on his loved ones, make special heart themed meals all day and a special feast for that evening.
Brook walks the ship playing love songs on his violin. He finds his way to where Franky and Robin as relaxing, moving his way outside of Nami’s door to play for her as she writes, to the kitchen for Sanji to listen while he cooks. And finally he finds his way to the crows nest where captain and first mate have hidden away. After dinner he plays all night allowing his Namaka to dance and sing and remind him he isn’t alone any more.
In another part of the ocean
Mihawk has made his way to Shanks once again. He’s looking for a duel or so he claims. But Ben knows as he watch’s the two head off that he won’t be seeing his captain for a while, and that it’s been to long since Mihawk had come around. Maybe this time the captain will convince him to stay, or at least this time Mihawk won’t stay away as long.
(Buggy is currently wondering where his swordsman has gone. Crocodile his torn between denying that he and Mihawk actually work for the clown, and knowing that if he tells the clown where Mihawk went he will have a front row seat to the funniest melt down of all time)
On yet another boat.
Masked Deuce knows that Ace has no clue what day it is. His ex-captain is busy with plenty of duties as second commander, but that doesn’t stop Deuce from planning something small. He can’t go too big. Ace will feel bad if Deuce goes all out only for him to forget. But he wants to do something because Ace deserves to be loved.
So he gets some help from Thatch to make Ace’s favorite. With a few stings pulled and favors promised (and the Whitebeards being huge softies) Ace gets relieved of his evening duties. Deuce surprises him with a picnic under the stars. The two take the time to remince on their time together. Deuce is so grateful he met Ace, he changed his life. Ace is so grateful he has Deuce, no one besides his brothers loves him as much as his ex-first mate.
