"Michael Richards: Are You Still Down" closes this Sunday, January 7th at the Bronx Museum of the Arts

Reposted from @bronxmuseum Join us this Saturday, January 6th, to celebrate the closing weekend of Michael Richards: Are You Down? with a special documentary film screening, discussion, and exhibition walkthrough. ​This culminating event will highlight Richards’ powerful sculpture and drawing practice, his friendships, the circumstances of his passing on September 11, 2001, and his enduring influence on cultural communities in New York City, Miami, and beyond.

A screening of the 30-minute documentary on Michael Richards titled Are You Down?, directed by #JuanMatos and Dennis Scholl @schollcreative, will be followed by a discussion moderated by Scholl, with artists #williamcordova and Dread Scott @dreadscottart and #MichèleWong, Deputy Director at the Grey Art Gallery, all of whom were friends with Richards. After the screening and discussion, exhibition curators Alex Fialho @alexfialho_ and Melissa Levin @melissalev will lead a walkthrough of the retrospective with cordova. This will be a unique opportunity to learn about Michael Richards from the perspective of those who knew him, offering an intimate look into Richards’ art, life, and legacy.

A Walk Through of Art in the Bronx

Art can be found all over New York City. Here are three exciting places you can visit to experience art in the Bronx!

First, stop by the BronxArtSpace gallery down in Mott Haven. This non-profit art gallery displays works from underrepresented and emerging artists and curators. The exhibition Model Redux, features five contemporary artists Chen Carrasco, Mauricio Cortes, Martine Fougeron, Jesse Kreuzer & Ray Lopez. The title references the failed Model Cities Program, which aimed to reinvent unrepresented cities in America, such as the South Bronx. This exhibition presents a collaborative group reflection on the ways local space and landscapes in the Bronx affect their inhabitants. It is an artivism project that depicts ideas of the revitalization of urban environments.

Next, head uptown towards the Grand Concourse to visit the Bronx Museum of the Arts. First, visit Diana Al-Hadid, a Syrian-born and Brooklyn-based artist’s exhibition, Diana Al-Hadid: Delirious Matter. Her sculptural works often challenges viewers preconceived ideas on how one experiences and defines space. Al-Hadid’s monumental sculpture Nolli’s Orders, stands at the heart of the exhibition. Nolli’s Orders depicts public and privates structures as transparent or solid blocks as she references Giambattista Nolli’s,1748 Map of Rome.

Then as you wander through the museum, visit Cuban artist, Manuel Mendive’s exhibition Manuel Mendive: Nature, Spirit and Body. Over the last 50 years, Mendive has developed a profound interest in the African spiritual traditions of Yoruba. Through his multidisciplinary approach to art, Mendive explores Yorubas mythology and man’s connection to nature and spirituality. The installation explores said themes through a variety of mediums, including a collection of paintings, sculptures, and performances.

Finally, conclude your evening by going even further uptown to the NY Botanical Garden to visit Georgia O’Keefe’s: Visions of Hawaii. This exhibition showcases 20 works by renowned modernist Georgia O’Keefe as she diverges from her iconic images of the arid Southwest to tropical images of Hawai’i. Curator Theresa Papanikolas, creates an immersive environment in which the viewer can get lost in the beauty and wonder of Hawai’i as they not only gaze upon O’Keeffe’s art but also surround themselves by the same fauna and flora the artist was inspired by. To continue this amazing experience take home a limited edition print, books, and apparel of O’Keeffe’s works from the NYBG gift shop.
