The snapper was pretty smitten to say the least he couldn't help it though. He was pretty quick to fall for her and it didn't take long for his crush to grow. Man now he was understanding all those dumb things on tv about how they take up your thoughts and such. He could still feel her lips on his cheek, hand over it as if he could save it, he hadn't washed the lipstick off yet. Started just a little When leo came in suddenly.

Good rainy holiday Monday morning, or as it has been traditionally labeled, happy President’s Day... or, as I recognize it in this house, Happy “Nothing but Respect for my President, the Wig Designer on Amadeus” Day.

Speaking of the magic of cinema, I have been seriously derelict in my self-imposed duty to report back on my trip to LA last month. Ah January, when we were delighted by the prospect of a new year, still giddy with the excitement of a post-holiday season high! Except, you know, the government was shut down, and my sunshine escape to LA was more a rainy low key thing, but honestly I’ll gladly take a high of 60 over a high of 32. 

Let’s get the most embarrassing part out of the way first: I saw Ilana Glazer, Jacob Soboroff, and Cord Jefferson all in one afternoon in Silver Lake. I’d like to think that that grouping of entertainment industry folks reflects the quality and character of what is one of my favorite hoods in the city. 

There are a few notable places my bro and I went to, most were chosen by him, but a few I had suggested. He: Alfred Coffee and Bowery Bungalow, Me: Go Get Em Tiger and Best Girl. Together, we decided upon Winsome in Angelino Heights for brunch the day I left. 

Alfred was very ... doing it for the ‘gram. I can’t really ding it for that? I, too, love a bold wallpaper. My favorite coffee shop in the whole wide world, Abraço, serves their to-go coffee in the greek paper cup, a decision I find charming because Abraço would have to do something wildly egregious to sway my brand loyalty. Alfred, at first glance, I thought, did the same--and then I looked closer and lo! This is not your average “We Are Happy to Serve You” cup, no, this is a ... well... it says “inspire” on it ...   

But facts is facts and the coffee was good! The broskies and I took it to go--there are a few Alfreds in LA, this one has some outdoor seating but not too much space all told. Plus, we were on a mission to get.those.steps.in. and walk from Hollywood to DTLA to go to the Broad. 

Après our grand day out (spoiler alert: the wait for the Kusama room was 3 hours so we just hung with the Ruschas... HOLLYWOOD IS A VERB) we headed to Best Girl at the Ace Hotel, which I discovered through Max Greenfield’s Grub Street Diet. It was fine, but the Ace Hotel has a good rooftop bar. A few trips ago, we hung at the rooftop bar of Mama Shelter and this one was nicer, perhaps because we were there pretty early, but the crowd was chill and the folks who work there are super nice. (Note to self: I still need to go to Broken Shaker...)

As we all know coffee tourism is the only guiding principle in my life (well, that, and What Would Gene Belcher Do?), the only other must-see on my LA list was Go Get Em Tiger. They have a few locations, but broheems and I went to the one in the Arts District, which was situated in a cute strip next to a Shinola and a Salt & Straw ice cream shop. Observation: LA and NYC “high streets” are becoming eerily similar in their formulaic layout: luxury brand or boutique, artisanal food, third wave coffee. (What’s the deal with Urban Planners?!) 

I came to LA intending to bring back some beans and ended up getting the Minor Monuments blend. I actually finished it up today and had to buy a 4oz bag from Irving Farm to hold me over until I can get some beans from Broadsheet in Cambridge later this week when I visit my friend. 

The rest of the trip was enjoyable--met up with some friends at Paper or Plastik cafe, and took the subway!!! Seriously, the LA subway may not be as robust as the NYC system, but frankly, the MTA has so many problems that it’s refreshing to use another city’s public transportation. Plus, now I have a TAP card.

I had a very LA-inspired literary experience as well--I finally read Joan Didion’s The White Album, and Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts. I will save my thoughts on that for a separate post that I probably will never get to. 

Before I flew out, we had an excellent brunch at Winsome--I highly recommend--they have a coffee shop up front with excellent looking pastries, and a diner vibe with booth, bar, and outdoor seating.

Aesthetically, this is their vibe, you know, accessible wines and decorative pinecones. I got the coffee cake and an egg skillet. It was rull good. Then it was back to the east coast, which has been decidedly less chill but decidedly more walkable. 

I don’t think I’m going to get to visit LA for a while with grad school on the horizon, but I’m grateful for the memories of scenic sunsets and gget coffee beans.

Only within myself am I able to maintain self improvement. This is starting to really fuck my head up. Pleading the 5th tonight. Why if I have the choice? What sounds better? Come back broheem later
