At the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix, Nelson Piquet Jr of Renault deliberately crashed so that his teammate Alonso (who started P14) could gain the race lead. Alonso won the race; Massa, who'd qualified on pole, finished P13. Lewis went P3 -> P2, which widened his wdc gap over Massa. At the end of the season, Lewis won the championship by 1 point (very dramatic race, I recommend watching it!). Basically: if Piquet Jr hadn't crashed on purpose, Felice Massa may have won that championship. This wasn't known at the time, because the FIA investigation into crashgate started in 2009.

Flashforward to 2023. Bernie Ecclestone, who had been F1 boss at the time, admitted that actually he had been aware that the Singapore GP had been tampered with while the season was still ongoing, but he and Max Mosley (then FIA president) decided not to take action to avoid a scandal. IF they had acted, Alonso / Renault would have been stripped of the Singapore victory and those points -> Lewis would also have lost his P3 points. Because Lewis won 2008 by literally one (1) point, Bernie straight up admitted "Massa should have won wdc that year but it's our fault that he didn't."

Massa is currently suing the FIA asking for the 2008 wdc to be retroactively awarded to him + a lot of money because of the loss of the income said championship would have brought. Obviously the wdc part is not happening and everyone involved knows it, but EYE for one, hope he gets a big fat settlement out of it

Waiting for a friend to finish work in my local pub so we could have a quick catch up by the fire. I had a chance to reflect on the last week... I haven't been out socially as much as I used to this year. I've been making a lot more space for myself to process as I've been healing and growing into new spaces. With Yule almost upon us, I feel called to spend some time with my tribe, I have had more opportunities to do so as everyone is celebrating the holiday, and I dont have to round them up. I recognise a difference in myself from last year (and a drastic difference from the years before). A lot of the anxiety has gone, if not all. I feel a sense of self-confidence and solidity I didn't used to have. Something I admired in others but didn't know how to find. Meeting and stepping into what is authentic for me has changed literally everything. I think a lot of it is that I no longer feel the need to mask in social situations. I still have further to go with it. I'm looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me. The lyrics are about a conversation between a man and a woman that seems like facile romance, but they’re actually on to bigger, more everlasting interests. Back in the 80s, I pitched the song to (now Sir) Cliff Richard, who wrote me a touching letter asking me to send him more songs. My friend Davy Jones (Monkees) was also a fan of this song, and I’m told it was covered by a British pub band. The great British pub is a classic institution. It’s been there in one way or another ever since we Brits figured out how to ferment hops, fry pork skin into bite sized, teeth shattering bits of salty nastiness and realised that you can make a small fortune out of charging earth shattering amounts for a small glass of grape juice to someone stupid enough to pay it! It stands in most towns and villages like a proud relic of what used to be. No longer are they places purely for drinking, talking about your latest sexual conquest, arguing the toss over who should have won the football at the weekend and putting the world to rights with your mates after a long week at work. Pubs nowadays are places of sophistication, smartness, elegance and above all gastronomy.
