Paladins&Co and Toast

Takashi: burns the toast. Tries to pass it off as he likes his bread extra crunchy, but is just as likely to be seen holding an untoasted bagel slice slathered in cream cheese in his mouth as he dashes out of the room, mumbling something about being late around a literal mouthful of bread.

Nobody really believes either excuse. (But doesn’t really want to be the one to deal with his magical ability to melt toaster wires, either.)

Keith: he actually does like his bread practically charred. He’s That Guy who cranks the toaster somewhere between 4 and 5, and loudly complains if anyone dares touch the dials to get the settings down to a more fit for human consumption cooking time.

Pidge: ...it’s...just...toast?!?

Lance: likes his toast a nice golden brown and crunchy and still burn-your-fingers hot with melted butter still sliding off, thank you. The rest of you are heathens.

Hunk: he’s worked out the Method and Perfect Toasting Color, Crunch, and Temperature down to an absolute SCIENCE. Many tastebuds and fingertips were burned off and regrown in the process, dangit! he knows the ins and outs of how to Cook Every Item to perfection (and which things taste better as blonde vs charred).

He also gets pretty upset when the others don’t clean out the toaster (or do clean it out after he got used to it being compensated for ‘cause he’s busy, too), or outright gets a new toaster without telling him. (Now he’s gotta do the process All Over Again!!!)

Jiro: he likes his stuff blonde. Like, *just* crunchy and warmed, and is completely delighted that Hunk *finally* taught him all the toaster hacks.

No more burnt or raw bread for him. Well, usually. Take that Takashi!

Allura: ...toasts things that were never intended to be toasted. The REAL culprit for how often Hunk’s stuck relearning a new toaster’s idiosyncracies. At one point she toasted a fresh waffle slathered in junipberry jam with a fried egg on top. The resulting meal was somehow a thing of brilliance. The poor toaster? ...not so much.

Lisa: delights in having a toaster and toasts All The Things (well, that can be toasted. Unlike some people...) She makes stacks of toast and sometimes toast art and constructs Toast Cities before eventually knocking them over with a well-tossed bagel. She happily shares her leftovers. Takashi, Jiro, Matt, and Allura are her usual vultures. Coran’s her partner in crime. Hunk’s having an anurism.

Coran: Lisa’s partner in crime. He isn’t quite sure what’s going on, and by Hunk’s reaction this isn’t a Terran idiosyncracy, but pure Lisa. Somehow that adds an even better element to constructing Rival Toast Castles and small, little paladins to defend them with the newest Paladin all the same. The actual taste of the breads is something he has little-to-no interest in. But the constructions and resulting food fights and feasts? Maybe he can start to see the appeal of this “toast-thing” afterall.

Matt: the guy who forgets to check the dials, and just toasts on someone else’s preset and deals with the consequences. Also the guy who takes abandoned toast or “accidentally” steals someone else’s toast by assuming it’s been abandoned. No toast left behind!!!

Ginger: Toast conessouir. But unlike her brother she gets it Right TM every time the first time without nearly a phoeb of experimenting. She’ll also fight anyone who says that Medium Golden Brown isn’t the perfect toast color.

Veronica: it’s literally just toast. Stop being so dramatic, guys...

(She checks to make sure the dials aren’t on 1 or 5 but somewhere in the middle, but that’s about it.)

Sven: ...this Reality...has TOAST???

Badass Slav: joins Hunk in his Toast Experiments, but adds complex calculations as to when to pop the toast and retoast it. There also might be a legit Toast Dance number while the wires are hot.

Ends up with burnt toast every time. (And increasingly more outlandish toasting routines.)

I revealed a shift in the way I am approaching my individual project. Instead of focusing on themes such as time and preservation, I hope to foster a shared experience through a meal.  Some ingredients will be sourced from the garden, but the main point of the piece will strive to be more about the experience of sharing flavors/scents/dialogue in a very specific setting- catered to our class. Ideally, this 'shared experienece' will continue to develop and influence far beyond the parameters of simply ingesting the meal.

I arrived at this next step via making three chutneys: apple, mint, and basil, and then not knowing what my reasonings were.
