Do you think Bridgens ever watched Francis’ quiet denial and bargaining, seeing a love story approach a tragic end, and realised that his own will likely end the same? Or was he holding out hope too? That parallel messes me up aha
For @theterrorbingo “the point of no return”

#🐉#bridgens outliving him is some 'no parent should have to bury their child' shit. evil
Don’t leave it in the tags. But no, you are so correct. Fandoms do tend to reduce characters to sidekicks, so I really don’t want to so this with Bridgens, but it is literally his job, his entire position on the ships, to be James Fitzjames’ servant, his valet. He does not seem to have the same closeness to James as Jopson and Francis have, but otherwise? Bridgens is incredibly tender and loving in a publicly appropriate way with Peglar, I feel like his position and the difference in class and position is what keeps him from being more outright affectionate to James. Perhaps also age (he is quite a bit older than James, surely not the same generation, while Jopson is younger than Crozier, which makes the master and servant dynamic play out differently)
when he says “there will be poems” in that choked up voice, it falls in line with what we’ve seen of how he shows his adoration to Peglar. Speaking of literature and poetry to a dying man. The way he holds his hand. The way he is so gentle while touching him.
and in turn, besides caring for the man on his own merits, watching Francis bargain for time, deny the inevitable? Most likely seeing bruises and scrapes while he cares for James? I think Bridgens already knows that he is seeing what his future with his own lover will hold. Not to claim that Bridgens can see the foreshadowing of his own narrative, but as Dave K put it, of the “married” couples the deaths and reactions of the remaining one within Fitzier and Briglar mirror each other
i’m unwell, don’t let gay guys write media about sad men ever
on the topic of relationships in the terror i wish there'd been more time to explore i want to know what bridgens and fitzjames had going on. i mean obviously being his steward after franklin died means they must've spent a fair amount of time together in fairly close proximity, but bridgens was the only other person allowed in that tent when fitzjames was dying and was genuinely distraught to see him go, which implies a level of intimacy and trust that goes beyond the professional. the best way i can think to describe it is i feel like bridgens would've offered to walk jfj down the aisle if he'd lived long enough to get married. jfj would put bridgens down as his emergency contact. do you get it.

I did a briglar! I also knocked off the “role play” square on my @theterrorbingo card.
To nobody’s surprise this is just pure filth. And a very loose interpretation of the term “role play”.

#SO PLEASED to find that casual conversational Shakespeare references from Bridgens are in fact canon #I had him think that way in my fic bc he plausibly could and bc *I* think that way and it made him easier to write but I didn’t know! #anyway Dan Simmons writing Briglar is a prime example of an author accidentally writing something good #like here this is and then meanwhile he writes Hickey… like THAT
My theory is that Bridgens and Peglar were a publisher-requested edit in one of the later drafts because (I'm assuming) an agent or editor looked over Hickey's whole uhhhh situation and they were like, "Hey, Dan? Are you sure the evil predatory schemer villain and life-ruiner is the ONLY gay guy? On a naval expedition? In the 19th century? Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE he's the only one????"
And so Dan was forced to write the Platonic Ideal of Unproblematic Gay Guys which tbh has its own set of problems BUT accidentally creates some lines that give the reader the impression that Dan might've had a human feeling even once in his whole life.

The Terror by Dan Simmons There's a lot to dislike about this novel. Wooden dialogue. Clumsy as-you-know-Bob exposition. Epithets worthy of early 2000s fanfic. ("The shorter man," "the younger man," "the captain of the fore-top," often all within the same paragraph referring to the same character.) Rampant unexamined racism and xenophobia under the pretense of an authentically Victorian viewpoint. A truly disturbing glimpse into the author's views on women. The less said of platypus pond, the better. Many dear friends and loved ones warned me against reading the book despite my adoration for the 2018 AMC miniseries. However, there remains the gleaming light of Peglar and Bridgens, a queer love story for the ages. Any basis in historical fact? Probably not. Am I infinitely grateful for its presence in this narrative regardless? Absolutely. So some thanks to Simmons for a tender romance amidst all the (intentional and unintentional) horror. And many, many, MANY more thanks to David Kajganich and Soo Hugh for somehow turning this dreck into a compelling and compassionate season of television.

John Bridgens/Henry Peglar • 1.7k words • Rated E
The ship buzzes with the energy of the day and the added Terror crew members, and as John readies himself for bed, he never expects that Henry would be bold enough to slip into his cabin, uninvited.
