The Disability Library
I love books, I love literature, and I love this blog, but it's only been recently that I've really been given the option to explore disabled literature, and I hate that. When I was a kid, all I wanted was to be able to read about characters like me, and now as an adult, all I want is to be able to read a book that takes us seriously.
And so, friends, Romans, countrymen, I present, a special disability and chronic illness booklist, compiled by myself and through the contributions of wonderful members from this site!
As always, if there are any at all that you want me to add, please just say. I'm always looking for more!
Edit 20/10/2023: You can now suggest books using the google form at the bottom!

I was tagged by @robinainthood !
Make a poll with five of your all time favorite characters and then tag five people to do the same. See which character is everyoneâs favorite.
I tried to limit things to one per fandom and also promptly forgot every character I ever liked however I could not exclude all 3 of my DmC kids so bonus Vergil option.
anywho, tagging: @thevampireauthoress @whimsipunk @ro-blaze @destroyyaa @bigsister-watches @cainite-bite (no pressure, only if you want!)
#i'll tag six because i added a 6th dfghjkl#shout out to me wanting to add booker my beloved but not adding booker because i purely love booker out of spite and contempt for infinite#i love the concept of booker you see asdfghjk i love the booker in my heart#fab talks#fabtalks#shout out also to spy for making it into the poll my love for him is deep and infinite even if i never talk about him asdfghj#other honorable mentions: august whom i miss every day#arthas who fascinates me but i realize the way i think he best works in the narrative is um not blizzards just let him suck idk#zelda its a toss up which i like best out of her and gan by the day#my baby boy wrathion love him my singular arab in all of warcraft#and jet because i think he rewrote my brain as a small child and now im like this#also rachel amber i thought about her also but thats because i've been thinking about her a lot lately idk why#second shout out to the poll being half dmc characters#anyway if any of you have propaganda for this poll you should share it it'd be funny dfghjkl

Hi scholar
How well do your characters interact with children? Rank them please.
Thanks for the ask sleepy! I'm sorry I'm so late answering this sldkfjsf.
Marco = he's the fun cousin, the one who will teach you how to play with dangerous weaponry and take you for a ride on his go-kart just a little too fast around the old church parking lot. He's chill and a little wild and would much rather hang out at the kids table than have adults ask him about his life plans
Matteo = Marco's twin, can be a fun cousin too, they share a lot of interests but he's the more cautious one out of the two so he'll put a stop to the improvised game of stickball before someone ends up with bloody knuckles
Hannah = is a kid, 14, but good with kids younger than her because she recognizes that adults are stupid sometimes and is an extremely protective older sister. Socially awkward with her peers because she's autistic but generally friendly enough that she can manage navigating conversations.
Brigid = a sweet woman who looks middle aged but is actually about 1500 years old and has prophetic powers. She's caring and kind and a mentor kind of figure but she's a little out of touch otherwise
Quercu = a faerie in the seelie court who becomes a friend and mentor to Cecelia. Mischievous and skilled at her craft, but also has a lot of baggage from her own past. She's still a good role model and can be left unsupervised with the kids, but she's a little less stable than everyone else on this list
the Seelie Monarchs = They're benevolent but not particularly nice or safe. As eternal beings I don't think they understand the concept of children particularly well. That's why Brigid handles the Powers.
Honorable mentions because they don't quite fit the question:
Cecelia = she's 12 but she's extremely shy and socially awkward and relies a lot on Hannah for social queues.
The Taken = also 12 but a literal feral child raised by an evil faerie in the woods so her social skills are biting and clawing and entrapping people in vines.
Jack of Fables = I wrote him out of the book more or less but he's a neutral winter spirit who just likes messing with people. Wouldn't kill a child on purpose but the cold is harsh and unforgiving.
The Piper or any of the other Unseelie Master = no. just no.

OC Headcanons
Thank you @kaylinalexanderbooks the Great for the tag! (here)
Rules: use this website to generate headcanons for your OCs, then explain if they're right or not!
The Blood Cleaners
Justin almost drank the lethal dosage of caffeine once.
I never thought of that before. I'm so tempted to add this to canon.
Joselyn enjoys doing taxes.
Oh, you don't know her if you believe that.
Clarice forgets to eat sometimes.
Tried to think of a situation where she would....maybe I should portray her eating before I decide if this is canon or fanon.
Sanctuary Calling
Nari is a sleepwalker.
Actually, later in the story she suffers from PTSD where this could be a symptom.
Abraham has punched a hole in their wall.
I have never seen such a polar opposite deviance from a canon before.
The Keeper of Maralla
Juva hates being alone.
Half true? She is a loner, shy, quiet, and solitary. She can never be completely alone, though. She would break down if she got lost. Good thing she always has Maralla for company.
Maralla does not know what sleep is.
Quite the opposite, she slept for hundreds of years in a fairy ring.
Jorem tackles and wrestles people to show affection.
No, he shows affection by teasing and witty compliments.
Columbus Day
Julie has not showered in two and a half weeks.
Apparently the generator confused Julie with Juva.
Tsicatam bites their nails.
True, but for a different reason than it seems. He is an alien with claws and keratin teeth. He, like all of his people, often bites his claws and nails while eating.
Brigid Aideen
Aideen has an incredible spice tolerance.
She can tolerate almost anything.
Lou needs a nightlight to sleep.
I worry this would make him too much of a stereotypical wimpy nerd/geek.
David cringes at their middle school yearbook photos.
I believe it.
Tagging (no pressure): @buffythevampirelover @wyked-ao3 @winterandwords @kitkins13 @poethill @willtheweaver @orphanheirs and open!

Tell me more about rage against the dying of the light please!!!
Oh my dear!!! <3333 Thanks for the ask, first of all! Second - this is my absolute favorite position on the list, even though I hardly have 10 pages.
Some time ago I started to think up a character - Gabriel "Roots" Rothenberg. I knew how he looked like, I knew what and how he was. I started to put him into different scenarios, like one does with an OC. And one day a scenario came to my mind about a kinda-medieval thing, with him being in the army (near-border watch sorta thing), in a world where the kingdom he hails from is at war with the neighboring one. They try as much as they can, but sometimes there's nothing they can do to help the people that are being raided. A missive comes that the king has died and so Gabe and his unit have to move on, traveling to the capital for the coronation and the swearing-in while another unit takes their place.
But! He would have been lonely even with his soldiers (he's a traumatized dude, give him a break, wait a minute Wednesday, etc. etc.) so I made him a boyfriend, Danny Leeds :D He joins Gabe's unit after his whole village got culled. So! There we are :D <3
I may publish it one day when I actually have something to publish... but here's a snippet for you <333
Gabe Roots hated rabbit stew. Whoever had thought up this particular concoction of vegetables and meat must have been an evil spirit amusing himself on his day off, he thought, peering into his bowl. There was a sad little slice of carrot drifting at the surface, pale enough that it could be considered parsley if one squinted hard enough. Maybe it was, seeing as everything growing in this godforsaken piece of land was so bland there was no telling for sure what their most recent foraging quest had unearthed. Jacob had deemed it edible, though, and Gabe trusted their cook implicitly. Reluctantly, he dug out his spoon and stirred the contents, shuddering at the pieces of rabbit floating up to the surface.Â
Even without tasting it, he knew it would be chewy as shit.Â
How did the meat stay so damn dry after soaking in boiling water for close to an hour, he could never guess, but his suspicions were confirmed with the first bite. He munched on it carefully, frowning at Avery slurping up his portion and smacking his lips soundly afterwards. âThat was delightful,â he commented, and Jacob grinned, waving his hand in thanks. Gabe shivered again, looking down only to see the sad slice of carrot finally give up and sink to the bottom of the bowl.Â
He gritted his teeth and kept on eating, barely reacting when he felt another presence sitting down next to him. âItâs getting colder,â Cinderâs voice was low, deceptively conversational. He grunted instead of answering her, and tried to find the unfortunate carrot, mostly to get rid of it. âIf we donât get orders to move out soon, weâll be doomed,â his captain went on, well-used to his moods. Gabe nodded absentmindedly, upturning a piece of something looking suspiciously like a bone. âThe girls will be back,â he reminded her, glaring at the elusive slice when he caught a glimpse of it slipping away and back to the bottom of the slop. âLetâs hope they didnât encounter any trouble.â âBrigid?â Gabe huffed, amused. âThe last time someone tried to get in her way we had two bodies to bury.â He grinned at the memory.Â
Brigid was rather on the short side, and her long, blond hair and big, blue eyes lent her a soft appearance, to the dismay of anyone trying to intimidate her. She was quick as a snake, carried five knives, and knew well where to stick them. âBesides, Elizabeth is with her,â Gabe went on, shrugging, finally managing to pin the offending piece of vegetable to the side of his bowl. He dragged it up. âIf her glare wonât put off any possible brigands, her bow will.â âSheâs a hunter,â Cinder replied, her gaze flickering to his determined battle. âAnd a marksman,â he added, gathering the carrot on his spoon. He brought it up for inspection, glaring at it. âWhat in the world is that?â He asked with distaste, and his captain chuckled. âWhite beetroot,â she enlightened him, her amusement turning into a full-on laughter when he tossed it to the side.Â

3. What were your top five books of the year?
Answered! But I still had it copied so answering again lol. Tress of the Emerald Sea by Sanderson, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Sanderson, Hunger Pangs: True Love Bites by Joy Demorra, Forging Silver into Stars by Brigid Kemmerer, and the Broken Earth series by NK Jemison. Honorable mention to The Saltwater Heir by Cassidy Clarke
11. What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
Answered this one too but Iâm gonna pick a second now that the opportunity presents itself! I really enjoyed the Broken Earth series, Iâd put it off because I wasnât sure if Iâd enjoy the seriousness of it but I did!
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
So Iâm in the middle of rereading Hero of Ages and would like to finish that. Iâd also like to get Defiant and read it too, but tbh itâll probably be next year bc I need to reread Cytonic and the novellas first. My memories are a little fuzzy on them lol. Honesty most of my reading plans are for after the new year. I have like 5 chapters left on the rough draft of my book and thatâs really where my focus is rn. bc itâs so. so close to done. but after I edit it into a first draft, I want to stop and read a lot for a while, both to clean my brain out and to reread some old faves so I can focus on like. sentence structure, pacing, etc and digest that to improve my own work. youâre welcome for the unprompted tangent about my own unfinished book LOL

Leaping lizards, frogs and rabbits, today is February 29th, which means itâs Leap Day 2024! Leap Days occur only once every four years when an extra day is added to the end of February, except in century years that arenât exactly divisible by 400. This formula was adopted in 1582 to better synchronize the number of days in the Gregorian calendar with the Earthâs orbit of the sun for both religious and agricultural reasons. Aligning the calendar with the sunâs path proved crucial for farmers who need to follow a precise schedule for growing purposes. Leap days help ensure that they plant and harvest their crops at the right time during the right seasons. So, in recognition of this agriculturally significant, quadrennial event, here is a foursome of ideas to get you *leaping* out of your seat to the farmers market this weekend. 1) Four Step Italian Wedding Soup Traditionally speaking, it has been the norm for men to be the ones âpopping the questionâ when proposing marriage. But legend has it that in 5th century Ireland Saint Brigid of Kildare asked Saint Patrick to grant an exception to this rule by allowing women to propose once every four years on Leap Day. If a man refused a womanâs proposal on February 29th, he was to compensate her with twelve pairs of gloves to hide her ringless finger. Whether or not youâre considering getting down on bended knee anytime soon, making Italian Wedding Soup from scratch is a wonderfully warming way to romance your partner â or to pamper yourself with a simmering bowl of savory goodness: Ingredients:
œ pound Roaming Acres ground bison meat
1 large egg from Yellow Bell Farm, lightly beatenÂ
2 tablespoons dry breadcrumbsÂ
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheeseÂ
Âœ teaspoon dried basilÂ
Âœ teaspoon onion powderÂ
5 Ÿ cups Yellow Bell Farm chicken brothÂ
2 cups thinly sliced escarole from 4E Green FarmÂ
1 cup uncooked orzo pasta or any small-sized pasta from La Trafila Pasta
â
cup finely chopped Sun Sprout Farm carrot
Steps:
Combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, basil, and onion powder in a bowl.Â
Shape beef mixture into 3/4-inch balls and place on parchment-lined tray.Â
Heat broth in large pot over medium-high heat until boiling. Stir in escarole, orzo, carrot, and meatballs and return to boil. Reduce heat to medium and cook at slow boil for about 10-minutes, stirring frequently until pasta is tender yet firm to the bite.Â
Serve hot and enjoy!
2) Four Ingredient Salmon, Potato & Broccoli Sheet Pan Dinner This four-ingredient sheet pan dinner is so quick and easy that itâll make you *leap* for joy! Sheet pan dinners are not only super convenient to make, theyâre also eco-friendly because they require just the oven to be lit and produce only one dirty pan to clean, saving both energy and water.
Ingredients
Broccoli from Jersey Farm Produce cut into small florets
Potatoes from Sun Sprout Farm cubed into 1- to 1œ-inch pieces
Salmon fillets from American Pride Seafood
Seasoning: Garlic, olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt & pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a rimmed baking sheet with olive oil or nonstick cooking spray.
Place broccoli and potatoes on baking sheet and drizzle with two tablespoons Kontoulis/Arlotta olive oil. Sprinkle with finely chopped garlic, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper. Toss it all together then spread it out on baking sheet. Roast for 20 minutes.Â
While vegetables are roasting, season salmon fillets. Remove tray from oven and nestle salmon in between vegetables. Roast for another 10 minutes or until vegetables are tender and salmon is cooked to your liking.Â
Serve immediately.
3) Four Cheese Pizza Pizza ai quattro formaggi (aka four cheese pizza) originated in the Campania region of Italy where it was first made with a combination of mozzarella, gorgonzola, fontina and parmesan cheese melted together. Over time, different parts of the country developed their own versions of this iconic pizza using a variety of local cheeses. But you donât have to *leap* over the pond to Italy to grab a slice, as Wave Hill Breads 4 Formaggio Pizza is parbaked and locally made with fresh and shredded mozzarella, parmesan, asiago and Romano cheese. Simply take one from the freezer, pop it in the oven at 450 degrees for 12-15 minutes and enjoy! 4) Four Syllable Veggies Hereâs your Leap Day Word of the Day â Quadrisyllabic. Quadrisyllabic means any word with four syllables which, of course, happens to include four currently in-season vegetables. These locally grown veggies are easy to spot at our farmstalls and work wonderfully in the recipes listed below:   Cauliflower -- Cauliflower, Potato and Leek Soup Celeriac -- Creamy Celeriac Mash Romanesco -- Parmesan Roasted Romanesco Rutabaga -- Oven-Baked Rutabaga Fries We hope you enjoy these four-tifying Leap Day foodie ideas. While we await another four years for the next Leap Day to transpire, we wish you a four-tuitous weekend full of four-tunate finds at the farmers market.

âEvery woman that finally figured out her worth, has picked up her suitcases of prideâŠ
...and boarded a flight to freedom, which landed in the valley of change.â - Shannon L. Alder
For the purposes of full disclosure, my lack of surprise over the information provided by the investigators from PI Labs was, in part, secondary to an angry outburst by Ingeborga back in January. When I confronted her at that time with my concerns and suspicions backed by hard evidence, Inga typically employed the "falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus"  strategy. This simply means that Inga would look for a flaw or inaccuracy in the evidence I provided and then attempt to discredit the entire array of facts because of an omission or minor error. As a result, Inga angrily accused the investigators of not being thorough when announcing she was divorcing Denis. It was not clear to me at the time if that was just an angry, knee-jerk response by Inga to reinforce her previous claims that she did not have a close relationship with Denis or if there was some truth in her assertion. It also caused me further confusion over the events of the previous few months.
Flashback to Sam Spade...
From the end of my calamitous video call with Inga in January up to the point of receiving confirmation of her divorce, I could not make any sense of the actions of Inga and Denis. If I accepted Inga's explanations on their face, discounting all the historical lies, I would come away with the understanding that Inga and Denis were married and living together in a sexless marriage. Inga implied that both had sexual interests outside their marriage. The implication was that theirs was a marriage of convenience or, at least, one without a lack of inertia to change conditions. Inga began communicating with me extensively and, from her actions, there was an impression she was hiding this from Denis. However, I was supplying Inga and Eva with gifts and Denis assisted in the collection of the various parcels mailed. If Denis was not aware of my involvement with Inga, why would he be assisting her? When I met Inga and Eva in St. Petersburg, how was this meeting explained? If the marriage of Inga and Denis was in name only, why would Inga be a cosigner to a significant mortgage loan and then become the petitioner for divorce on the heels of that? What was really behind Inga's withdrawal and change in attitude toward me in November and December? In all of this I still could not rule out that there was underlying criminal activity on the part of the Reshetnikov family.
It all reminded me of Sam Spade attempting to unravel the machinations of the various parties seeking The Maltese Falcon. At one point in the film, Spade relates his doubts to Brigid over the actions of Joel Cairo. Spade replies to the apparent confusion of Brigid concerning his questioning Cairo's motives by stating, "Because, my own true love, I've got to keep in some sort of touch with all the loose ends of this dizzy affair if I'm ever gonna make heads or tails of it."  In my interactions with Inga, it was all a dizzy affair.
Let's cast a line and see if they are biting...
I was determined not to tip my hand that I had acquired Inga's divorce along with the nature of the murky terms associated with the dissolution of her marriage. Some bargain was struck but my past experiences with Inga taught me that unless details could be discovered by the private investigators, Inga would not be the source.
As Winter 2022 relented in Pskov and Spring finally made an appearance (about June in Pskov), Inga expressed her relief at the arrival of warmer weather. Our conversations were less of war-related news, as this became a contentious topic. Frequent, daily messages were still of an unimportant character with the exchange of pleasantries related to the weather and plans for the day and then the weekend. Inga frequently wrote of plans to meet with one friend or another and then wrote of sudden changes to their plans. These last minute cancellations left her at home, looking for movies, preferably in the Horror genre.
I mentioned to Inga that my work-related contracts would likely be ending in Autumn. I was giving consideration to scaling back my work hours in preparation for retirement. I wrote of my ambivalence regarding full retirement as I was concerned about boredom. However, I had been entertaining thoughts of either a fill or part-time life in Europe. This opened a new line of conversation for us as we shared our thoughts regarding one country or another. We both seemed to be in agreement about the virtues of Spain. I had been seriously looking at properties in the Costa Blanca region for long-term rental or purchase. Inga's interest was piqued with this exchange and expressed her interest in living there. She wrote of having friends in Spain and that there were many Russians who had emigrated. Â
I suggested to Inga that she inquire about a visa and consider a move away from Russia. Perhaps the change in environment and expanded opportunities would serve as motivation for personal growth. If she were to make such a decision, I would be supportive of her both emotionally and financially. Inga related that she had a multi-entry Schengen visa but it would soon expire and Eva had no visa, which precluded any travel. However, Inga seemed excited by the idea of a life outside of Pskov. As I shared photos and real estate listings with her, she became even more enthralled with the idea. At one point, I sought out a school in which Eva might be a good fit. Inga stated that she would begin applying for visas.
Despite all of these discussions, I was acutely aware of the reaction of Western European countries, especially those in the Schengen Region, to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Western Europe had all but shut out Russians with an interest to travel. Visa requests were not being approved for Russian nationals. In addition to this, if Inga were able to secure visas for herself and Eva, entry for the purposes of tourism would be limited to a fixed number of days. This would hardly be an appropriate solution for emigration. Â
Was Inga engaging in a new round of "Future Faking" or had I triggered a new grandiose fantasy?
