Another day of Writemas thanks to @agirlandherquill 💚🤍🫂 I feel that Friday the 13th in December isn't so scary because the Christmas cheer cancels out bad luck, and because I have bad luck everyday anyway 😄

For the Day 13 Writing Prompt list, I chose the narration prompt: "The damage was done. The ruin irreparable. It would leave scars and plenty of them, but at least, along with the pain, there remained a story to tell." I liked this and thought of how I could use it in the opening of Brigid Aideen. This novel is a YA Scifi fantasy superhero story. I tried to write Draft 1 about ten years ago, but it miserably failed. So now I'm going to try again. I like how these writing prompts have helped me work on Draft 2 AND Draft 3 of my main WIP and helped me get started on three other WIPs. Ah 2025 will be a fun year 😃Content warning: The story deals with a sensitive topic. I'll be careful with what I sample and post.

Chapter 1

That’s me, the dark-haired teenage girl you see on the hospital bed in the trauma center. You may see that my eyes tell of the invisible blows hitting my essence. I curl in a fetal position and cry. I tell the hospital staff to leave me alone. I know I need to see a counselor soon. No backstroke or healing touch can stop a girl’s cry. I know that I’m not alone among the other patients - women and girls who emerged from the darkest moments of their lives. I still feel alone. I don’t understand why I had to survive to live with this hell in my head. I look back to the moment mere hours ago that changed my life forever and brought me here. The damage was done. The ruin, irreparable. It would leave scars and plenty of them, but at least, along with the pain, there remained a story to tell. And so I tell that story, all the way to where it began. How did I come here? How did this all happen? Where did I come from? How did everything come down to this? Why? Who am I really? Why don’t I bleed when reason says that I should? Imagine a slim, dark-eyed sixteen-year-old girl, nervously carrying a box of Mom’s favorite Delft Blue up the stone stairs to the new house. That same ginger-haired mother carries my crying two-year old sister right behind me. My dark-haired Dad carries a box of books. My younger brother closest to my age, who looks almost exactly like our dad, carries the Samsung TV. My other frisky junior high brother carries the boxed bookshelf that will house the books in my Dad’s box. My little sister and little brother play on the lawn, him proudly holding the ball that our youngest sister cried over losing. Actually, I have to go back further to what my brother said before hell broke loose. We are in our family van, big enough to hold my parents and us six kids. Dad is driving. Twelve year old Tyler sits in the passenger seat, playing Skyrim on his Switch. Mom is in the middle seat with the two youngest, six year old Roger drawing in a color book while two year old Ashley eats her Cheerios. In the back, nine year old Kathy sits by the window reading Anne of Green Gables. Fourteen year old Patrick sits in the middle, reading a Naruto book. As for me, I’ve held two things for much of our trip. My Samsung Galaxy in one hand. My lacrosse stick in my other hand. When I’m not looking at the things in my hands, I’m looking out the window. Watching the country before me has given me a lot of time to think. Did Paula stop caring for me? Did she have a problem that she never told me? Will Alana continue to message me? Will I share her pictures in my lacrosse gear at my new school? Will Alana dump me like Paula did? What is my purpose in life? I swing around my stick. I’m going to show my new school that I’ll be a rockstar player. ____________________________________________________________

brigid pass, eyvel smash, i think. i understand the appeal of pirates and all but brigid is aideen in a funny hat, personality-wise, as well as the not-fun kind of stupid. eyvel has a much better head on her shoulders (thus i'd likely be able to hold a conversation with her) and i'm fond of swordswomen.

I didn't find a lot of characters appealing (probably because of the lack of supports) but the one I like are Sigurd, Julia, Julius and Ishtar. Tallitu and Tini too. And Azelle. And the Nordion Sibling

Oh yeah. When playing Engage people were thinking of Lilith and Corrin but I already had the feelings that Veyle and Alear were in reality a wink to Seliph and Julia. I mean they are both half siblings (Julia and Seliph through common mother, Veyle and Alear through common father) and both look fragile when in reality they hold a great power. I think Julia and Veyle would be best friends !

I’m compiling a list of playable characters from the first half of Genealogy of the Holy War, and their fates after the Battle of Belhalla! Also speculation on some of the ambiguous fates. Your mileage may vary.

Azel — Unknown, likely died (Kaga’s notes for a scrapped third section indicate he survived, but I don’t count scrapped content as canon. If Azel has a surviving child, they inherit Velthomer, otherwise Seliph has it)

Midir — Unknown

Aideen — Survived (If she is paired, her daughter Mana mentions her in conversation with Lester)

Dew — Unknown

Ayra — Unknown

Jamke — Unknown, likely died (if he has a child who survived to the end of the game, they inherit Verdane in their ending, otherwise Seliph has it)

Lachesis — Survived

Beowulf — Unknown

The only patterns I’m seeing are a lot of ambiguous fates and the unambiguous survivors being mostly women (all women if we count Lewyn’s death and resurrection as him not surviving Belhalla).

On the one hand, it sorta makes sense. Child characters are tied to female characters, so the best way for their backstories to work is for the mother’s fate to be unambiguous (with the exception of Ayra and her children), with the male characters’ fates being ambiguous so that they can fit into any character’s backstory. On the other hand, it’s amusing that the Meteors fired during Belhalla apparently hate men.

That being said! Let’s see what likely happens to each female character’s spouse!

Aideen — Her spouse can survive and it would still make sense.

Ayra — Whatever happened to her spouse isn’t ambiguous in-universe. Ayra’s fate is talked about because it’s ambiguous. Larcei and Scáthach would probably talk about their father, too, if they didn’t know what happened to him.

Lachesis — The only time it makes sense for her spouse to have survived is if said spouse is Finn. Otherwise why wouldn’t he have come with her? With the exception of maybe Beowulf. His conversation with her in Chapter 5 is basically a breakup, so…

Silvia — I don’t think it really matters if her spouse is dead or not, but I’m leaning closer to him being dead, disappeared, or Lewyn because it makes more sense to give a child up for adoption if you can’t take care of them on your own and that was your only option if you wanted to keep them. But it’s also possible that Silvia and her spouse (assuming he’s alive) agreed that they could not take care of their children properly and so gave them up for adoption.

Erinys — It makes more sense if her spouse is dead, disappeared, or Lewyn. Otherwise, why would Fee feel the need to search for him?

Tailtiu — It makes more sense if her spouse is dead, disappeared, or Lewyn. Otherwise, why wouldn’t he go with her and stick up for her or at least emotionally support her?

Brigid — It makes more sense if her spouse is dead or disappeared. Otherwise, why wouldn’t the father of her children raise them in her absence?

Let me know if you disagree with any of this! I know the second part is speculative on my part, so naturally, there are some people who will have other takes!

The 23rd Day of Writemas! 🎄🍒❄️👩‍💻✍️

Wow Christmas is almost here! Writemas is almost done! Thank you again @agirlandherquill for this wonderful set of writing prompts that helped me in so many ways!

From the list of writing prompts for Day 23, I chose a chapel. Originally I hoped to write this scene a few days ago when there was a prompt for an altar. I didn't have much inspiration at that time. Now I was able to get inspired and dive into this scene. This is from Brigid Aideen, currently working on the first draft. This is a superhero story that deals a lot with my protagonist's faith so this prompt was perfect.

The altar at Saint Matthew's is not as sumptuous as altars in cathedrals where I used to live, but not any less beautiful. The empty chapel stirs soft whispers in the air. I feel cozy in my pew. I turn my eyes to the stained glass windows. A king with a crown looks down on me, holding up two fingers. I wonder if He is blessing me, telling me that I’ve been worried for nothing.    

“Hi!”

A young girl at the back of the chapel runs down the pews toward me. She’s round faced and looks about ten years old with long dark brown hair.

She stops where I sit. “Hey! I haven’t seen you before. Are you new?”

“Yeah,” I say. “Do you know everyone here?”

“Oh, yeah,” says the girl. “I’m an altar girl. My name is Veronica.”

She extends her hand. I shake it. “I’m Aideen. Well, it’s my middle name. My name is Brigid, but I go by Aideen.”

“Pretty name. So are you new to our parish? New to town? Just checking out the cathedral?”

I fiddle with my fingers. I shouldn’t be shy in front of a young girl, but when nothing in my life has been normal, talking to anyone feels like I'm on the spot.

“My family and I just moved here.” That’s all that I can say. 

“Cool, where are you from?”

“Oh,” I breathe and shrug. “Everywhere. We lived in Florida. Before that, New York. I was born in Ireland.”

“No way! Why don’t you have an accent?”

There’s something about Veronica’s puffy, rosy cheeks and bubbly voice that makes me smile. “We came to America when I was just a baby. My dad has been everywhere so he doesn’t have an accent either, but he is 100% Irish.”

 “My mom says we’re part Irish. And part Spanish. And part Swedish. We’re even a little Jewish.”

I smile as I say, “100% Irish as my parents. I don’t need 23andMe.”

Veronica laughs. She takes a second to look around the chapel, as if checking for anyone else. “So, Aideen, what brings you here tonight? Just touring? Are you going to come to mass?”

“Oh, yeah,” I say. I don’t know if she’ll understand, but I feel the need to let it out. I’ll just have to take it slowly. “Veronica, if you don’t mind my asking, do you have friends?”

“Oh, yes,” she says matter of factly. “Some are in the parish. Some are from school. I take it you don’t know anyone here yet?”

I rub my fingers against the armrest. “When I was your age, I had friends. Now I’m sixteen. I don’t have friends anymore.”

Veronica’s face turns gray. “What happened?”

“I don’t know.” It’s the truth. “At first I asked, ‘What did I do wrong?’ Now I ask, ‘What’s wrong with me?’”

Veronica shakes her head. “How could there be something wrong with you? My mom teaches me that we’re all special to God.”

I lightly tap on the armrest. I don’t know if I know her well enough. I switch to a smile. “So, what school do you go to? What grade?”

“Brookwood Elementary. Started 5th grade this year.”

“A public school?”

“Yeah, my mom wants my brothers and sisters and me to experience being with all of the other kids. Keeps my dad happy. What about you?”

“I don’t know what public school is like.”

Veronica shrugs. “We’re all different.”

We’re all different. We’re. All. Different. We. Are. All. Different.

“We are,” I say.

Veronica looks around. “Are any of your family here? Are you just touring the place? Have you seen Fr. Roberto? ”

I tighten my lips. “My parents don’t know yet if they plan to go to this parish. I was actually here for Confession. But the line was too long.”

Veronica widens her eyes. “Confession? What did you do?” She shakes her head. “Sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.”

“It’s okay,” I say. “You wouldn’t understand. You don’t need to.” I stand up. “I actually should head home now. But it was nice to meet you.”

Veronica smiles. “You too, Aideen. I hope you come back! Mass is tomorrow at 8:30am.”

I nod. “I’ll see what my parents say. My sister Kathy is about your age. You’d get along well.”

“I bet! You have a good night, Aideen!”

“Thank you, Veronica.”

I leave the cathedral feeling a little more blessed than I expected.

FE4 GEN 1 OPINIONS: CHARACTERS

OK SO

I just beat FE4 like a while ago.

Here are my opinions on gen 1

Sigurd

He's a good lord, both character and unit wise. I like him a lot.

Naoise

He was cool, but really? Only ONE conversation/line? Really?? He needed better. Unit wise he was ok.

Alec

He was cool, and getting two conversations is better than one! I kept him with an iron sword most of the Gen, for no reason. Ugh.

Arden

I tried my best to make you work and almost succeeded...but...it just didn't happen. You could do damage but you were just too slow! I like his character a lot unironically.

Quan

Not bad. Definitely needed more defense, but I like him. He's relationship with fin was great.

Ethlyn

Pretty much always useful in most situations I had her in, and promoted before she...uhh... y'know.

Finn

Finn did great, but suffered more from the needing more defense thing. I like him a lot. Promoted.... eventually. Almost married him to Lachesis but....I failed...

Azelle

He's just nice! I like him! Also he was a good mage, and eventually mage knight. Married him to Aideen.

Lex

My first promotion. DAMN was he good! Paragon plus brave axe is just too amazing. Married to Ayra.

Midir

MIDir was mid. He did his job but never did it well enough. And yet...I like him a little bit. Enough to marry him to Brigid for some reason. That was kinda dumb...

Edain

One of my types is just pretty priestly women. She's my type. I like her. Married to Azelle.

Dew

I wanted to make you useful BUUT you were too weak and I didn't do the easy strat of just... leaving you alone in the woods. He goofy. Married to Sylvia.

Ayra

She's just good. We all knew this. Married to Lex for that sweet sweet BRAVE SWORD.

Jamke

He's good, but doesn't do much outside of his chapter. Needed a bit more character. But as a unit he's awesome, and surprised me with his tanking abilities.

Deirdre

Plot device woman sure was a plot device.Who could've guessed? She's pretty and does damage.

Lachesis

I was promised depression and only got spunk. Not disappointed but she's great. Almost married to Finn, but Beowulf was there to tell her to go get him anyway.

Chulainn

Annoying to recruit because Luna, but great to use because Luna. He certainly was a character in a game.

Beowulf

Decent enough. He did his job well, and I appreciate him for it. Married to Lachesis

Lewyn

No explanation needed. He was great all around. Married to Enryis.

Silvia

Dancer lady. She was never not useful and had a charming character to boot. Married to Dew.

Enryis

As the only flier in gen 1, I LOVE HER! She did amazing! Proud of her ass. Married to Lewyn

Brigid

She's a great archer and a cool character. Needed something more than pursuit to be more special though, but idk what else to give her. Married to Midir

Tailtu

She's neat. I like her character a lot. She wasn't really fun to train tho...like at all. Cuz I just had to reset a bunch and hope a 60 percent didn't hit her. Married to Claud

Claud

He's a character who I surprisingly liked alot. Spiritual characters are neat. A shame he's really only a healbot. It make it harder to use him. He did get to level 30 tho. Married to Tailtu

I know you played FE4, so what pairings did you do? If you remember!

It's less "which pairings I did" and more "which pairings I got" because the love system in FE4 is the most obtuse thing ever especially if you're playing it for the first time, but the pairings I remember I got are:

Sigurd/Deirdre

Quan/Ethlyn

Ayra/Holyn (yes I know, yikes)

Lewyn/Sylvia (this one is horrible because it locks you out of Forseti for almost all of Gen 2)

I think I got Tailtiu/Claud? I know Tailtiu got married to someone because I had her kids in Gen 2

Same for Aideen, she probably got paired with Midir

I can't remember at all who Brigid married

Seliph/Lana (no idea how this one even happened)

Larcei/Iuchar (ugh.)

I really, really hope they replace the love system with the modern support system, because it feels like a total slog like the GBA supports, but almost completely out of your control. Unless you make the two lovebirds stand next to each other for a gazillion turns, because Geneaology really needed more time where nothing interesting happens.

Ullr nonsense; Eyvel recognized her voice from day 1 in Thracia and ask whats up with that. Brigid OTOH thinks she's another sister, first it's that swordwoman (best) mom, and now this ethereal archer. When the hell is she going to see Aideen again? And Ullr is feeling awkward, since she does not want to explain to her descendant[s] and goes to Forseti for help. Unfortunately, Lewyn doesn't know what the hell this glowing archer is talking about and wishes Father Claud is here for mumbo jumbo.

Brigid : "First there is this Eyvel person who doesn't know Aidean even if she looks like her a lot, and takes care of kids, just like she would. I mean, Aidean is the mother type, I'm not cut out for this stuff. Now there is this other person who uses my bow, who is she? Andrei became a girl while I wasn't here or...?"

Ullr looks at Lewyn, then at Ced, and leaves confused. Who are those persons? Why was Fjalar genderbent? Why is the current host of Loptry stomping flowers to impress a priest who seems to be his relative?

The magical world of Askr is just so non-sensical, but at least ghost!siggy seems as lost as she is.
