I think the grumpy x grumpy trope is underrated, and there are mathematical ways to prove its superiority.

You see, a positive number, or in this case person, multiplied by (or ‘x’d with) a negative makes the result negative. Hence, an unhappy relationship with unhappy people.

However, two negatives multiplied together make a positive = overall happy relationship with happy people.

Therefore, we can see that grumpy x grumpy is indeed the best ship dynamic, because they bring out the sunshine in each other. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

i always thought ‘spit on a stranger’ was romantic (honey i’m a prize and you’re a catch and we’re a perfect match) - at at primavera in 2022 malk made this canon basically by swapping out his wife’s name for ‘honey’ - a real november 5th crazymaking moment for me and i think probably a lot of pavement fans who are used to traditional concepts of ‘romance’ and ‘want’ and even ‘sex’ being teased at in the lyrics but never confirmed...

but pavement’s most romantic song has got to be ‘no tan lines’ - which speaks, i think much more straightforwardly, about a lifelong love with a specific person. which is so antithetical to the mutable, word-salad-y, confusing, malkmusian nature of pavement lyrics. truly the anti-pavement song but for malk crooning shakily ohh yeeaaahhhh, at a register he cannot really hit but still goes for. i can’t find a single instance of them doing it live. 

first we get young, virile love, no tan lines tonight, no tan lines tonight. soft, loving, straightforward sexy times. way more straightforward and gentle about it than normal. 

it still has an unsettling vibe at the end where they spend a few lines talking about elderly incontinence lol. but then, spit on a stranger is called spit on a stranger. so this seems just typical pavement. mixing romance with offputting stuff.

or maybe a comment on how growing old with the one you love isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. that would be much more in line with pavement’s cynicism. 

but still i think there’s some softer descriptions of this otherwise nauseating subject... You will be my candy striper (other kinds of ‘lines’). kind of a ‘sweet’ way to approach this. 

and then there’s the fact that it’s not so much ‘gross’ as it is a simply fact of life that bodies break down. even old broken bodies still love.

and the very last lines which lean towards a quiet happiness and a satisfaction of a life well lived: I live to be grey, I live to be grey!
