september 1, 2021 6:15 p.m. basil's restaurant
ten minutes ago
[ktmurphy86] i might be a few minutes late, but i'm almost there.
grant scrolls through the metric ton of messages piling up in his notifications until he reaches the very end, and with a lump in his throat, opens it to respond. or like it. or send a thumbs up like a cool cucumber.
baby steps, he tells himself. one task at a time. the responses to all the messages from family, friends, and former co-workers inquiring about his exam results will come later.
just meet your sister first andโ
โyou seem different.โ
he nearly jumps out of his skin as kellyโs high-pitched voice supersedes his thoughts.
โhopefully in a good way,โ grant replies, looking up as he slides his phone off the table and into his back pocket.
itโs been nearly a decade since their last encounter, and heโd still recognize her from a mile away.
kellyโs hair is dyed platinum blonde like always, but now itโs twice as long, and her natural brunette locksโpeeking through at the rootโare streaked through with shocks of silver. her ice blue eyes are just as piercing, only underlined with tiny wrinkles. sheโs still thin, too, but rather rail thin; her sweater dress seems to wear her more than she wears it.
โyes, in a good way.โ kelly pulls out the chair opposite him and sits down with her arms wrapped across her waist. the candle between them casts a strange yellow glow over her wiry features. โyou look better, much healthier.โ
โuh, thank you. you look great as well.โ
she half-smiles. โitโs just hair dye and botox. i look old. i didnโt inherit the ageless รณ sรบilleabhรกin genes, so i'm going grey very early like all the callahans. by the way, you werenโt waiting long, were you?โ
โoh, no, no, not at all. i have my car, but i didnโt want to deal with traffic, so i took the subway, but then that also kind of took a while. i pretty much just got here.โ
โokay, good.โ kelly pauses for a moment, her lips pursed. โwell. i thought about what i'd say to you the whole ride over here, and now itโs all gone.โ
for a moment, they exchange no other words. they drown in the silence, staring into each otherโs eyes and into the past.
sheโs surprisingly warm, all things considered. the last time theyโd been in the same roomโ
grant is distracted again from his thoughts, watching as a strange sadness falls across her face. she reaches up at the collar of her dress and tug at it like itโs choking her, and her eyes then drift away to stare at an indistinct point on the table between them.
โitโs weird to see you again,โ she admits suddenly, her gaze still fixated far away from him, โi didnโt think youโd message me back a few months ago.โ
โto be honest, i didnโt mean to. i replied by accident one night and then just decided to follow through with talking to you. and now i'm here. yeah. um, anyway, whyโd you reach out to me?โ
โi was on facebook a couple months ago, and one of those โlook at what you posted this day years agoโ things came up. it was a picture aunt bridget tagged us all in. it was the whole family at one of your high school hockey games, i think your freshman year state championship game.โ kelly shrugs. โi didnโt even know any of those pictures were still there. that was a real surprise, given i unfriended and blocked everyone i'm related to on there when i left home after high school.โ
grant nods. โa picture of me probably very sweaty and gross with helmet hair made you want to reach out to me?โ
โnot quite. my kids were with me at the time. we were in an airport coming back from vacation, so they were bored and nosy. โis that you? who are all these people?โ i was then immediately caught in my lie; i'd been telling them their whole lives i had no family left, and their only extended family was their dadโs parents.โ
โyikes. i'm sure that was awkward.โ
โit was,โ kelly says plainly, โmy oldest kids werenโt happy with the news. theyโve been, um, a little jealous of their friends for having lots of cousins and big family events for the holidays, and it didnโt go over well when they figured out they do have a big family. besides, they rightfully did see it as a betrayal of their trust. if mom lied once, what else might mom be lying about? the tooth fairy? santa claus? the easter bunny? yes, those, too. sorry. also, if you didnโt already guess based on my new last name, i married jack, andโฆโ
โi figured you married him. youโd already been together a really long time even when i last saw you. we all grew up together, and you guys were middle school and high school sweethearts and all.โ
โheโs a good guy. as i was about to say, though, jack is very partial to you. he always liked you. he thought you were a sweet kid, and he wonโt let me forget what happened between us. so, after the facebook incident, he encouraged me to contact you, if only for the kidsโ sake. after living in a huge family, i donโt think itโs all that fantastic, but he has a bit of a chip on his shoulder being an only child, and he doesnโt want the kids to have no one besides his parents in their lives. donโt get me wrong; i will never ever get involved in callahan or รณ sรบilleabhรกin bullshit again, but i will consider reconnecting with you and letting you meet the kids.โ
grant bites into his lip as that nagging anxious lump returns to his throat. โwell, why me? why bother getting involved with any of us again after everything? even if it is for your kids, what's your motivation?"
kelly outright ignores his question. โtell me what youโve been up to for the last, what, eight years? nine years? i donโt remember how long itโs been. you're at least talking to our dad, i hear.โ
"how do you know that?"
"my in-laws may not know anything else about you these days, but they've seen you with him around our hometown."

Jennifer Kellyโs 2023 in Review: Still Human FWIW
I finally saw Sun Ra Arkestra
I first heard about Chat GPT in January this year, and it sounded bad from the start. I make most of my living writing things for big faceless corporations who view me as a cost. Cut that cost to zero and Iโm out of a job. But for the first five months of 2024, I continued to be busy and I thought, well maybe itโs nothing. Then in May, like a light switch, everything stopped. I had one regular client who continued to pay a monthly retainer. Nothing else. And the usual mailings, pleadings with old clients, etc. had no effect. Iโm close to retirement age. This summer, I thought I had arrived early.
Things have picked up since then, and right now, Iโm in a good place. People are starting to notice Chat GPTโs ignorance of anything post 2021, its refusal to factcheck or footnote and its relentless blandness. Clients are coming back, but the floor doesnโt feel very solid under my feet. It could all go away at any time. (This is the lesson we all learned from COVID-19โฆthat you could fall into the pit any time.)
The one thing that didnโt stop was Dusted, and for that I am very grateful. As Iโll explain to anyone who asks, thereโs never been any money in Dusted, so there canโt be any less. We are more or less immune to economic pressures. And as long as weโre here, there is lots and lots of good music to write about.
My year started with two records that blew me away in January (and maybe December 2022) and held #1 and #2 slots all year. They were Meg Bairdโs Furling and Robert Forsterโs the Candle and the Flame. Next, came an email from Rob from Sunburned with a link to Stella Kolaโs extraordinary debut, and then gosh, Sub Pop still sends me promos and hereโs one from Mudhoney! Every time 2024 succeeded in getting me down, Iโd get music from someone.
Live music was another solace. Shows that made me happy this year included Warp Trio, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Dear Nora, Vieux Farka Toure, Bridget St. John with Stella Kola, Sun Ra Arkestra, Kid Millions with Sarah Bernstein, Faun Fables, Sweeping Promises, Daniel Higgs, Constant Smiles, Baba Commandant (RIP), Xylouris White, Joseph Allred with Ruth Garbus and Ryan Davis with his Roadhouse band. Special mention goes to the always astonishing Thing in the Spring with Editrix, Rough Francis, Thus Love, Gorilla Toss, Equipment Pointed Ankh. Susan Alcorn, Marisa Anderson and Jim White and Bill Callahan.
The best show of the year, however, came late in the summer with William Tyler and the Impossible Truth band, an unbelievably talented, seasoned crew with Luke Schneider on pedal steel, Third Man mainstay Jack Lawrence on bass and Brian Kotzgur on drums. The way they opened up and fired up Tylerโs songs was a revelation, even to someone, like me, whoโs been a fan since Behold the Spirit. Garcia Peoples opened, and they were great, too.
I should mention that we have recently been blessed with a bunch of excellent music venues nearbyโNova Arts in Keene and Epsilon Spires and the Stone Church in Brattleboro. Going to music used to always mean driving back from at least Northampton, sometimes further, late at night, and, as I get older and my night vision fades, it has been really nice not to have to do that. (Also, to all my Dusted-reader-musician-friends, if you play one of these venues, thank you, and let me know when youโre coming.)
With that, itโs time to talk about 2023 favorites. Iโll write about the first ten and then just list the rest.
Meg Baird โ Furling (Drag City)
Meg Bairdโs gorgeous solo album alternates between ghostly, inward-looking piano songs and bright swirls of 1960s psychedelia. Her extraordinary voice, high, pure, and unearthly, joins lush, burnished guitar grooves. Sometimes I think I like the swaggering bounce of โWill You Follow Me Home,โ the best, but other times, the disembodied otherness of โAshes, Ashesโ is the prettiest thing I know.
Robert Forster โ The Candle and the Flame (Tapete)ย
Forsterโs solo records are always good, wry and funny and stuttering with strummy punk energy, but this one, recorded with family while his wife battled cancer, is his best yet. โSheโs a Fighter,โ a group sing-along is prickly and defiant, the only song specifically written about Karinโs illness, but threads of enduring, life-long love run all through this album. โTender Yearsโ is especially moving, as Forster sings, โIโm in a story with her, I know I canโt live without her, I canโt imagine why,โ in a voice cracked with sincerity and feeling. Very few albums make me cry, but this one does.
Anohni and the JohnsonsโMy Back Was a Bridge for You to Cross (Secretly Canadian)
The sound on Anohniโs fifth album with the Johnsons smolders in the pocket, its textures a nod to Marvin Gayeโs classic Whatโs Going On? Itโs velvety smooth but taut with urgency, as the artist contemplates climate disaster and personal struggles. โIt Must Change,โ trills with the coolest falsetto, while โSliver of Iceโ reverberates with a low, hushed passion. Every song lands a punch, soft when it happens but ringing for days in your ears.
The Drin โ Today My Friend You Drunk the Venom (Feel It)
โVenomโ lurches and blurts, bass thumping, drums clashing, monotone vocals drenched in menace. Itโs a punk song distilled to essence, a world in itself, a short, brutal blast that is also somehow psychedelically expansive. The Fall, the Swell Maps and Adrian Sherwood haunt this disc in various places, but the Drin is its own mysterious thing.
Wreckless Eric โ Leisureland (Tapete)
โGet yourself a one-way ticket for the merry-go-round,โ sings the Bard of Hull on the last and most exhilarating song from his ninth full-length. Thatโs โDrag Time,โ with its indelible hook, its enveloping harmonies, its hint of Amy Rigby in the chorus. Letโs just go way out on a limb here and say itโs as good, maybe better, than โWhole Wide World.โ ย
En Attendant Ana โ Principia (Trouble in Mind)
Good lord, was Trouble in Mind on a roll this year or what? I could put Melanas or Tubs here, with FACS not far behind, but instead, let us contemplate the light-and-dark wonder of โBlack Morning,โ with its giddy counterpoints, its bright, sustaining trumpet, its boppy beat and its underpinning, somehow, of shadowy melancholy. Or the skanky bass that kicks off โSame Old Story,โ in a prickly way, the lone element of dissonance that gives a daydream teeth.
Stella KolaโS-T (Self-Release)
Everybody whoโs anybody in W. Mass alt.folk does a turn on this magical LPโcentered around Beverly Ketch and Rob Thomas but including PG Six, Wednesday Knudson, Jeremy Pisani, Willy Lane and Jen Gelineau. Despite the expansiveness of the ensemble, these songs are feather light and lucid, like Pentangle sprinkled with magic dust.
Mudhoney โ Plastic Eternity (Sub Pop)
Psychedelic overload meets raw punk and potty humor in this 12th album from the grunge godfathers. I like the sheer rush and swirl of cuts like โAlmost Everythingโ and โSouvenir of my Tripโ best, but bare, belligerent โFlush the Fascistsโ is grade-A too, and how can anyone resist Mark Arm paying tribute to his best bud on โLittle Dogs.โ
Beirut โ Hadsel (Pompeii)
youtube
Hadsel is surprisingly cheery for an album recorded on a remote Norwegian island in the dead of winter, with swoony harmonies and counterpoints, intricate synthesized beats and blares of an antique pipe organ. โWe had so many plans,โ Zach Condon sings, both mourning and subtly sending up his cohortโs response to the COVID pandemic, but this remarkably pretty album seems more like a happy accident.
The FeeliesโSome Kinda Love (Bar None)
What a total pleasure it is when one jangly, drone-y, indie rock phenomenon pays tribute to the wellspring. In this case, itโs the Feelies covering many of the Velvet Undergroundโs best known songs at a live show in 2018 where everyone had a blast. Now you can, too.
More albums that I loved in the order that I thought of them.
Iron & WineโWho Can See Forever Soundtrack (Sub Pop)
MelanasโAhora (Trouble in Mind)
Sleaford Mods โ UK Grim (Domino)
The Tubs โ Dead Meat (Trouble in Mind)
Sky FurrowsโReflect and Oppose (Feeding Tube/Cardinal Fuzz)
Lonnie Holley โ Oh Me Oh My (Jagjaguwar)
Yo La TengoโThis Stupid World (Matador)
The ToadsโIn the Wilderness (Upset the Rhythm)
Dan MelchiorโWelcome to Redacted City (Midnight Cruiser)
James and the GiantsโS-T (Kill Rock Stars)
Ben Chasny and Rick TomlinsonโWaves (VOIX)
Bonnie Prince BillyโKeeping Secrets Will Destroy You (Drag City)
CLASSโIf Youโve Got Nothing (Feel It)
The ClienteleโIโm Not There Anymore (Merge)
Devendra BanhartโFlying Wig (Mexican Summer)
Kristin HershโClear Pond Road (FIRE)
Sally Anne MorganโCarrying (Thrill Jockey)

Reviewing My Record Collection: 3333 Albums from A to Zuma by Stephen Fall
Featuring more than a thousand different artists, Reviewing My Record Collection: 3,333 Albums from A to Zuma examines LPs across diverse genres and sub-genres, acquired from a lifetime of loitering in charity shops and collecting records, tapes and CDs. It offers an honest opinion on the great and less great albums of the last 60-plus years, driven by an ongoing curiosity to hear everything at least once.
The book grapples with the catalogues โ often large and unwieldy โ of artists such as Abba, Arab Strap, Albert Ayler, Joan Baez, Jane Birkin, Blondie, Blur, David Bowie, James Brown, Tim Buckley, Kate Bush, The Byrds, John Cale, Can, Captain Beefheart, The Carpenters, Leonard Cohen, Julian Cope, Elvis Costello, Miles Davis, Lana Del Rey, Sandy Denny, Depeche Mode, Bob Dylan, Brian Eno, Fairport Convention, The Fall, Funkadelic, Gong, Grateful Dead, Luke Haines, Jimi Hendrix, the Human League, the Incredible String Band, the Innocence Mission, the Jesus and Mary Chain, King Crimson, The Kinks, The Knockouts, Kraftwerk, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Gordon Lightfoot, Julie London, Paul McCartney, Medicine Head, Joni Mitchell, The Monkees, Van Morrison, Randy Newman, Joanna Newsom, Nico, The NoMen, Angel Olsen, The Orb, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, Pavement, Peaches, Pink Floyd, Elvis Presley, The Pretenders, Dory Previn, Prince, Public Image Ltd., Pulp, R.E.M., Radiohead, Lou Reed, Jonathan Richman, the Rolling Stones, Roxy Music, Bridget St. John, The Seeds, Silver Apples, Simon & Garfunkel/Paul Simon, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, The Smiths/Morrissey, Smog/Bill Callahan, Sonic Youth, Spacemen 3, Sparks, Regina Spektor, Bruce Springsteen, Status Quo, Steeleye Span, Suicide, Sun Ra, T.Rex, Talking Heads, Television/Tom Verlaine, Richard Thompson, Van der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill, Townes Van Zandt, the Velvet Underground, Loudon Wainwright III, Tom Waits, Robert Wyatt, Yes, Neil Young and Warren Zevon.
1,000+ artists! 785 footnotes! 3,333 albums reviewed!

Orlando Pride on the COME UP
We got Sonny and AK to hold our backline
Ash in goal
Marta will be dropping goals left and right
New management with Amanda Duffy (which is actually very concerning for the league, but great for my squad so let's ignore that)
Alex's baby will provide the HYPE that this team needs
Bridget Callahan. Still love her, still don't know why
We're screwed during the Olympics...buuuut you can't win them all and at least we have the start of something good. So...LET'S FUCKING GO
