a/n' i listened to "i loved you" at least forty times back-to-back yesterday, so i decided to write a fic about my bias based on the lyrics 🙏 is anyone gonna read this? ofc not. am i still gonna post it? yes ofc
You hated him. God, you hated him. If your mother had heard you say that, she would’ve scoffed and told you, “Hate is a strong word.” But you thought it wasn’t strong enough. Scrolling through the Google drive he had sent you on your last anniversary that was filled with all the old pictures and videos he'd taken of the two of you on his stupid vintage film camera, you could only think of all the things about him that you hated. You hated his stupid hair that you used to run your fingers through at night, his pointy nose that you used to kiss in the mornings before you left for work, his calloused hands that used to hold you with such warmth, his pretty lips that once told you that he couldn’t imagine living without you, that he would love you till the day he died. The same lips that told you he didn’t love you anymore.
“I just…can’t do this anymore.”
You stood still in the kitchen of your apartment, your hands frozen as they still held the potato you were peeling as you prepared dinner for yourself and your boyfriend of six years. It was Friday night, which meant that Younghyun had come over for dinner, as he had nearly every Friday for the past six years- barring the times he’s been on tour. When he’d arrived at your apartment, you could tell that something was off. You’d just assumed that he’d had a bad day, or was just tired. You never would have thought that he’d be telling you this. Not after you’d discussed engagement rings just last week.
“What are you trying to say? You’re just breaking up with me? Did I do something? Did I say something?”
He shook his head with his face in his hands as you rambled on, questioning what could’ve possibly made him say these things to you. He looked up at you, both of you looked a wreck, tears in your eyes and noses running.
“It’s not that. You…You didn’t do anything.”
“Then why? What happened? Why now?”He took a deep breath as he took in your disheveled state. The tears from your face had fallen onto your pretty powder blue sweater, and he fought the urge to smile at the thought that even after all the years you’d been together, all the fights you’d had, all the times you’d seen each other at your worst, you still tried to look pretty for him. But as sweet as that thought was, it still couldn’t change how he felt.
“I don’t know. I just…I don’t know how else to say it. But I just…” He took another breath to steady his shaking voice, “I just…Don’t love you anymore.”
You hated how he never gave you a reason. Even after crying and begging, he couldn’t tell you. And maybe you said some things that you shouldn’t have, maybe telling him to leave, that you never wanted to see him again was going too far. And maybe it was a lie.
After he left, you found that he’d blocked your number, your socials, everything. Just like that, he erased you from his life. You resented him for that. After he left, you went numb for a few weeks. It was like your whole world had ended, like everything had lost all its meaning. Your mom came by almost every day to check on you, and of course to tell you that she never really liked Younghyun, that she just wanted you to be happy, and you’d be better off without him anyway. You hated how she talked about him.
After a while, you decided to pick yourself up and go about life as if he never existed. You threw out all the things he’d left at your apartment over the years, including the plant he’d given you as a housewarming gift when you first moved in. You tried to forget him, forget the time you spent with him, the trips you went on, everything. It was hard when your coworkers and friends would ask about him, when your cousin asked if you were bringing him to the upcoming family reunion, when the little old lady that lived in the apartment next to yours knocked on your door to ask if he could carry her new coffee table up to her apartment.
You were doing well at forgetting his existence. It had been almost three months, and your apartment had been scrubbed clean of any trace of him, all his photos had been deleted from your camera roll. But while you were sitting on your computer in your home office, scrolling through your Google drive to try and find an old work project that you needed to reference in a new report, you came across his last anniversary present to you. You couldn’t stop yourself before you clicked on it. Looking through all the old photos and videos of the past six years, you felt nothing but resentment as you saw his smiling face in the thumbnails.
You must have been scrolling for at least half an hour before you stopped at a certain video, the thumbnail bringing up a particularly harsh memory. You hesitantly clicked on the video, and the sound of your own laughter flooded from your speakers.
He’d really outdone himself this time. When he’d asked you a month ago what the number one place to go on your bucket list was, you immediately told him “Vienna”. You’d wanted to go ever since you were a little kid and you’d heard the BIlly Joel song of the same name coming from your dad’s record player. Little did you know that he’d take you there as a surprise for your fourth anniversary.
You giggled in glee as you looked out across the beautiful river that you’d always longed to see. You turned to see Younghyun pointing his camera at you, grinning as he observed your reaction.
“Are you filming me?”
“How could I not?” He laughed as you playfully swatted at the camera, pulling the neck of your sweater over your face so he couldn’t film it. “You’re just so beautiful, I can’t help it.”
You stilled and smiled as he reached one hand out to grab your own and drag it away from your face, the neck of your sweater falling back into place at your collarbone. He pressed your knuckles to his lips before turning the camera so the both of you were in the frame. You wrapped your arms around each other, his arm that was not holding the camera coming to rest across your shoulders. You reached one hand up to grab his hand that rested on your shoulder, while your other hand went to the back of his neck, your fingers lazily playing with the soft brown hair that you loved so much.
The two of you smiled at the camera for a moment, listening to the river lazily flowing as the sun set behind you and the crisp autumn air blew through your hair. Younghyun turned to look at you, his eyes scanning over your features, smiling lazily as you turned to meet his gaze.
“What?”
“Nothin’. I just love you.”
You grinned as you bounced on your tippy toes to leave a quick gentle kiss on the tip of his nose. “Really?”
He shifted his arm that rested across your shoulders downwards so it wrapped around your waist, his hand playing with a loose string at the bottom of your sweater. “Yeah…You know, I can’t imagine living without you.”
You blushed and buried your face into his shoulder, his hand tightening around your waist. “Younghyun, you can’t just say things like that.”
He grinned and pressed his lips to the top of your head, “It’s true, though. I’m gonna love you till the day I die.”
You pulled away briefly to look up at his face, which was smiling warmly down at you, his eyes filled with nothing but fondness as they met your own. You narrowed your eyes at him, looking up at the camera and back to him.
“...You’re not about to propose to me are you?”
He let out a laugh before bringing you in closer, pressing another kiss to the top of your head before burying his face into your hair. “No, not yet. It’s coming, though.”
You looked up at him again, the look of love on his face told you that he was telling the truth. “I’ll be waiting.”
You didn’t feel the tears that had been cascading down your cheeks until the video had ended. You hated him. You resented him. You never wanted to see him again. So why were you crying? Was it because you wasted six years of your life? Was it because you felt lied to? Why were you wasting your time crying over a man that didn’t love you? Over a relationship that was never meant to be? Why did it hurt so much?
You hated him. You hated him. You hated him.
But as your tears started falling harder and soft sobs escaped your mouth, you knew the truth. You didn’t hate him. You never hated him. You loved him. You knew deep in your heart, that you really did love him. You loved him so badly, it made you hate him all that much more. No matter how many times you tried to erase him from your memory, or how many times you tried to forget the love that he gave, or the time you spent with him, you knew you never could. Because you loved him. And deep down, you always would.

Oh, how comfortable you were, cuddled up on the couch whilst you wait for Brian to finish making you his special hot chocolates that you have become obsessed with. Getting him to make them almost every day since the start of November whilst being in a jolly mood as the countdown to Christmas officially started.
“Here’s your hot chocolate, baby,” Brian cheers as he carefully passes you your hot chocolate, grabbing it from him with sweater paws from your hoodie, smiling sweetly up at him as he places his on the table to take a seat next to you, pulling your legs over his lap.
Oh and how perfect it was, decorated with whipped cream and sprinkles, combined with the glittering lights surrounding you as the movie is ready to be played. Both of you were right in your element, the scent of the cinnamon sprinkled on your hot chocolate filling your nostrils delightfully.
The cinnamon wasn’t the only thing that was delightful, you couldn’t give an answer to the question of why you suddenly got distracted away from the movie, but with his lips molding against yours, you really couldn’t complain in the slightest.
Your hoodie flies from over your head to the floor, an item of clothing from you both joining it in turn as you fight against each other, the movie just being there for background noise at this point. Your warm, bare bodies flush against each other as he pulls you underneath him.
Your fingertips dig into the flesh on his shoulders as he pins down your hips to the couch, your tongues fighting against each other, leaving no time or room to catch a breath as one thing goes to another.
Taking his bottom lip between your teeth, you tug on it slightly as you giggle, watching his eyes turn dark with lust, with a smirk growing on his face.
“Oh, you’re going to be like that now are you?” He asks as he lifts himself off you slightly, leaving the slightly cold air to attack your half-naked body.
The cold air makes you shiver, but that isn’t the only thing to do so, the way his finger trails down your jawline, down your neck, and down to your torso makes your skin rise with goosebumps, making you pant and quiver at his touch.
He teases his fingers around the cup of your bra, playfully tugging at it as he carefully watches your eyes that follow his finger, biting down hard on your lip as he does so.
Then the bra was off, with one swift movement using his other hand to reach around to unclasp it, peeling it off of you painfully slow as you have to wait for him to do something else.
Everything he’s doing is slow yet every fiber in your body ached with admiration at how much he wanted to enjoy just looking at you, wanting to be sweet about it as his lips plant the softest peppering kisses along your shoulders down to your sternum.
Though you start to get slightly impatient, needing something more than just being kissed all over despite loving every second, the way it’s taking what feels like forever to get to your needs. Your fingers tangle in his hair as you give it a gentle tug, teasing him as he continues to pepper your skin with the most satisfying kisses.
“Oh, you really are going to be like that huh? Let’s see how you cope with this,” he scoffs against your skin, lifting his head up to look at you with the most mischievous grin that you’ve seen, on pins with anticipation with his statement.
The light touches continue, but his fingertips makes your hair stand up straight as he inches closer to where you desired to be touched the most, tugging at the band of your underwear and of course, pulling them teasingly slow too.
Lowering himself, his lips pepper the insides of your thighs, his fingers circling your sensitive skin on the other thigh, alternating the kisses and slight touches.
Until the scent of you fills his nostrils, being unable to resist diving straight in, a long lick up your core making you whimper as you try to keep your legs open so you didn’t trap him between your thighs.
Looking up to see your reaction, he breathes heavily against your soaking core, making you moan at the sensation.
The small whimpering cries that flow out of your mouth encourage him to keep going, his tongue doing wonders around your sensitive clit as his fingers make their way into your hole, curling them upwards just as you like it.
Then within minutes, you were so close to your breaking point, unable to control your legs as they start to quiver by his ears, and then nothing. He pulls away, chin covered in your slick as you give him a huge whine, unable to put words together to ask him to keep going.
“Oh, I’m sorry baby. Were you just about to cum? Such a shame,” his cocky teasing tone playing with your mind, knowing that he was purposely doing this but all you could do was whine at him, pouting as you hope he’ll let you have your release.

“But oppa,” You complain, “I wanna touch you.”
Your partner loved to tease, and he knew how much you loved to touch him when he is this close to you. The cuffs he brought home had hand-coverings attached, basically leather mittens, rendering your hands useless, and leaving you at his mercy.

A/N: Chelle ( @prettywordsyouleft ) and I wanted to re-visit our magical world of Mistletoe Manor. The series left off on a bit of a cliffhanger, so we really had no choice! We hope you enjoy this extra look into the lives of Cassie, Evie, Joey, and all their friends and family.

Evie let out a soft, shaky breath before lifting her hand, balling her fingers up into a fist, and knocking gently on the door in front of her.
“Come in,” Cassie’s muffled voice replied, and Evie turned the doorknob.
“I hope I’m not... interrupting,” Evie said softly after taking a step into her older sister’s bedroom.
Cassie, who was sitting at her vanity brushing her hair out for the night, set her hairbrush down and turned to look toward the door. “Evie, darling,” she greeted. “No, not at all. What’s going on? Is something wrong?”
“No, nothing -- nothing’s wrong,” Evie assured her with a shake of her head. And then she gestured inside Cassie’s room, taking another step forward. “...May I?”
“Of course!” Cassie stood from her chair and strode to her bed, perching on the edge and patting the spot next to her.
A small grin tugged at Evie’s lips as she stepped fully inside and closed the door behind her.
“What is it, dear?” Cassie asked once Evie sat down cautiously.
Evie pressed her lips together briefly, hoping her nerves didn’t show on her face -- though she was sure they did.
“I --” she began. “I just... was wondering... what it’s like being married.”
Cassie reached up and cradled her sister’s cheek in her palm, her lips curving into a soft but beaming smile. “You’re nervous for the wedding? It’s understandable. It’s a huge change in your life.”
When Yongguk had somewhat proposed to her on Christmas Eve, right before he’d left to go find Joey and Brian, she had been so excited. She knew Yongguk was the one she wanted to spend the rest of her life with; there were absolutely no doubts in her mind.
And when he actually proposed to her three days later after bringing the newly married couple home, she had accepted with tears of joy in her eyes.
They’d been planning the wedding for a few months now, and Evie was still excited...
But she was also nervous, as Cassie presumed. Not necessarily in a bad way, of course. She loved Yongguk dearly, and she still knew she wanted to spend the rest of her life with him.
But it was a huge change. And Evie had never been the biggest fan of change. She liked reading her favorite books over and over again because they never changed.
She’d lived her whole life at Mistletoe Manor with her two sisters, and now... she would be getting married and leaving.
Cassie had stayed here with Daehyun because she could quite possibly give birth to a son in the future, and he would become the heir to the estate. They certainly could have moved back to Daehyun’s home, but they had eventually decided to stay here.
But Evie had no real reason to stay and had agreed to move into Yongguk’s house.
...Well. ‘House’ was not the correct term. From her future husband’s description, it was even bigger than Mistletoe Manor. And she would become the mistress of the household in just a few days.
So, yes. Evie was just a bit nervous.
Or... terrified.
She nodded in response to her sister’s question, wringing her hands in her lap and furrowing her brow deeply. “Is it normal to be nervous?”
“Of course, dear,” Cassie assured her. “I would like to meet a bride who wasn’t nervous before her wedding. I most certainly was.”
“I just... I thought it would be different since I actually --” But then Evie cut herself off because she didn’t want to sound insensitive.
Cassie finished her sentence for her, though. “Since you actually love him. You’re right, I didn’t love Daehyun when we got married. And our first year of marriage was... not typical. And quite difficult. But now we’re happier than I ever dreamed we would be. Imagine what will happen to you. You’ll fall even more in love with Yongguk, and you’ll be so happy your heart could simply burst, I’m certain of it.”
“You are?” Evie asked meekly.
“Absolutely,” Cassie nodded. “It might be difficult, at first, but Yongguk will be there by your side. He’ll probably be nervous, too, and the two of you can help each other through it.”
Once Cassie stopped talking, Evie let out a shaky breath, though her stomach was not quite as jittery as it had been just minutes ago.
“Thank you,” she whispered to her older sister, reaching to take both of her hands.
“Oh, Evie,” Cassie murmured, bringing her sister’s hands up to her lips and kissing them. “I feel I have always underestimated you, and for that, I am truly sorry. But I hope you know just how delighted I am that you’ve found someone who loves and appreciates you for who you are and not who you should be.”
Evie simply smiled softly before leaning forward to hug Cassie tightly. “I love you,” she whispered.
“I love you, too,” Cassie replied, her voice becoming choked with emotion. “I will miss you, but I know you’ll be more than content over at Blackmon Abbey. Do say you’ll come and visit as often as you can, though.”
Evie nodded, finding a lump of emotion forming in her own throat. “Yes, of course,” she promised. “As often as we can.”
When Cassie pulled away, she reached up to quickly wipe a tear away and then sniffled. “Thank you for coming to me. I hope I helped, even if just a little bit.”
“Oh, you did,” Evie assured her. “Very much. I -- Why were you alone, though? Where is Lydia?”
Cassie’s eyes were still glassy with tears but at Evie’s question, a sly smirk appeared on her lips. “Lydia is... otherwise engaged.”
Unsurprisingly, Evie knew just what she meant. “Ah, I see,” she murmured with a smirk of her own. “I shall not seek her out, then, and let her enjoy her evening.”
“You should seek out Joey, however,” Cassie suggested. “She certainly has an entirely different perspective on marriage than I do, so she might have some other advice to offer.”
“Oh, yes, you’re right,” Evie agreed, her brow furrowing softly. “I’ll go into the village to call on her tomorrow.”
“Perfect,” Cassie grinned. “I would offer to accompany you, but I have plenty here to keep me busy.”
The look on Cassie’s face was just secretive enough to make Evie suspicious... but she kept her lips zipped. For now.
“Where are we going?” Lydia asked quietly, her lips tugging into a soft, shy smile.
Seo Joon smirked to himself as he held Lydia’s shoulders with one hand and covered her eyes with the other, guiding her to a small room off the servant’s hallway. It was typically used for ironing and shining shoes, but not tonight. Tonight, Seo Joon had conspired with the cook and Anna to...

He bent down as he shuffled along the hall, placing his lips next to Lydia’s ear. “How many times have I told you to just be patient?” he whispered.
“I’ve been patient the whole afternoon!” Lydia retorted with a giggle. “Plus, I’m starving. You know I get more impatient the hungrier I am.”
“Don’t worry, that will be remedied soon enough, my love,” Seo Joon murmured before pressing a kiss to Lydia’s earlobe.
Lydia leaned back slightly against Seo Joon’s chest, bringing one hand up to hold onto his wrist as he kept her eyes covered.
“Almost there...” he said as they approached the doorway.
“Can I see now?”
“Hold on just... one... more...”
Seo Joon stopped walking, letting go of Lydia’s shoulder and reaching out to open the door. As the hinges squeaked and the door swung open into the room, he removed his hand from her eyes and pressed his lips together in anticipation.
Instead of the usual shoes littering the table, there was a crisp, white tablecloth and two lit candles in silver candlesticks adorned the top.
Lydia’s eyes fluttered open, her lips parting slightly in surprise when she saw the scene before her. Also on the table were two plates of Lydia’s favorite meal: roast chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
Seo Joon had thought to ask (plead) the cook to make a fancier meal, one she would prepare for the family upstairs, but... he knew Lydia particularly loved Cook’s roast chicken, and all he wanted to do in life was make her happy.
“Seo --” Lydia gaped, turning around briefly to glance at him before stepping forward toward the table. “You... you prepared this?”
Seo Joon gently closed the door behind him. “I did,” he replied with a very proud grin. “It’s been so busy, and we haven’t had a chance to have any real alone time since the Mistletoe Ball, so I thought I would kindly ask Lady Cassandra to give you the evening off tonight.”
Lydia turned around fully then, her eyes wide and her brow furrowed slightly. She stepped over in front of Seo Joon and took his hands. “Thank you,” she said, squeezing his hands gently. “This is -- it’s perfect.”
Seo Joon’s grin widened, and he leaned down to press his lips to hers. He let go of her hands, moving his arms to circle around her waist and pull her closer.
The corners of Lydia’s mouth turned up into a hint of a smile as she slid her arms around Seo Joon’s neck.
“Have I told you,” Seo Joon murmured in-between kisses. “Just how much I love you?”
“Yes,” Lydia chuckled softly. “But, after all these years, it’s more than nice to hear it as often as you say it.”
To be honest, she was still getting used to everything. A voice inside her head was still telling her she shouldn’t be touching or kissing Seo Joon right now because she was so accustomed to hiding her feelings.
But the door was closed. No one else was in the room with them. Cassie had given her the night off. She could kiss the man she was in love with as she damn well pleased!
“Well, then,” Seo Joon whispered, rubbing the tip of his nose against hers. “I love you.”
“I love you, too,” Lydia replied with a grin.
“I love you so much that... it’s hard to even put into words.”
“Who needs words, anyway?” Lydia’s grin widened, and she stood on her toes to kiss him again. She pressed her lips to his more urgently than before, capturing his bottom lip and tugging on it. Seo Joon held her even closer, even more tightly, and a whole flock of butterflies suddenly appeared in her stomach.
...Oh, wait.
Those weren’t butterflies. Butterflies didn’t growl like that.
She was just still hungry.
Seo Joon pulled away, letting out a soft laugh and gazing down at her with a teasingly adoring grin. “I see it’s not actually me you’re hungry for.”
Lydia’s cheeks warmed at his remark. She pulled away, trying to hide a bashful smile as Seo Joon took her hand and led her over to one of the chairs at the table.
“The food is starting to get cold, anyway,” he pointed out as he helped her sit down and spread a cloth napkin over her lap. Before he sat down across from her, he served her, dishing out the potatoes and vegetables and cutting off some tender pieces of the chicken.
“Why thank you,” Lydia grinned, her eyes widening as she took in all of the delicious-looking food now in front of her.
“Please, don’t wait on my account,” Seo Joon assured her as he began to fill up his own plate.
Lydia, although polite, was also very good at following directions... so, she lifted her utensils and dove right in.
Unsurprisingly, the next ten minutes or so consisted of just a few sentences exchanged between the couple. The two of them were far too busy eating to engage in conversation, and when Lydia finally set down her knife and fork with a satisfied sigh, Seo Joon informed her they weren’t quite finished yet.
“What do you mean?” she asked curiously as Seo Joon took her empty plate away.
He set both of their plates down on a side table behind him and then bent down to retrieve...
When he stood back up and placed a small trifle on the table, Lydia let out an extremely delighted gasp.
“You didn’t think I would forget about dessert, did you?” Seo Joon smirked as he handed her a spoon.
“Oh, I do love you!” Lydia giggled.
Seo Joon’s grin lit up his face as he watched her -- Lydia, the absolute and complete love of his life -- scoop into the trifle with unadulterated glee.
Even if he didn’t have a romantic walk in the cold moonlight planned after this, and even if he didn’t know he would kiss her until she was breathless later, this would go down in his personal history book as a perfect evening. Just the fact he got to spend this time alone with her, and the fact she was so adorably happy was enough. More than enough.
He would have to plan more nights like this -- as many as he possibly could. One day, far in the future, he would plan a night like this to propose to her.
But, for now, he was fully content with the way things were. No more secret longing, no more hidden glances, no more worrying and fretting over ‘what ifs.’ He wanted to marry her, yes... but one day. Not just yet.
He’d waited so many years just to get where they were now. He could most certainly wait to take things a step further, and Lydia -- without question -- was worth the wait.
It had taken Seo Joon, Yongguk, and Daehyun almost two days to find Lady Josephine and Brian after their somewhat dramatic escape on Christmas Eve.
Thankfully, when they did find them, the couple was already married and awaiting passage on a boat to America.
Daehyun managed to convince them there was no need to run away to a whole other continent; her sisters certainly wanted her to return, and even if her parents didn’t quite approve of the marriage, they would much rather she stay here than be an ocean away.
Joey had -- somewhat reluctantly -- agreed to come back, and when she and Brian had returned to the manor, her entire family had surrounded her. They’d hugged and kissed her, both Cassie and her mother had been crying, and her father had almost immediately ushered Brian into his study to interrogate him.
The next week, the newlyweds had moved into a house in the nearby village, and Brian had begun teaching at the local school. Apparently, knowing how to read and write was a good enough qualification; Brian did end up rather enjoying the job, though.
And now, just about three months after their legendary departure, they were settled in their quaint cottage and -- much to some’s surprise -- incredibly happy.
Joey smiled to herself as she thought of how Brian -- her husband -- still teased her and got on her nerves. Daily, in fact. As she stuck the needle through her embroidery hoop, she recalled the first snowball fight they’d had -- and the few they’d had since, as well.
When a sudden knock interrupted her thoughts, she let out a soft gasp and dropped her project on the floor. Instead of picking it up, she scurried to the door and practically threw it open.
With Brian being gone at the school all day, Joey’s ideas for keeping herself busy were wearing thin, and she was more than glad to have a visitor.
“Evie!” she cried with delight when she saw her sister standing on the doormat.
She was especially glad to have this specific visitor.
“I hope I’m not interrupt --”
“No, of course not,” Joey assured her hastily, stepping aside to usher her in. “Please, come in. Shall I ring for some tea?”
“Oh, yes, please,” Evie answered, taking off her coat once she’d entered the house. “It’s almost colder than it was at Christmas time.”
Joey popped her head into the kitchen and requested a tea tray from the cook -- the only servant she had now.
“Come, sit down,” she murmured to Evie before leading her to the living room, the room she’d just occupied.
Joey bent to pick up her embroidery, and Evie let out a soft sputter of a chuckle.
“What is that?”
“It’s -- it’s my embroidery!” Joey explained with a huff. “Why did you say it like that?!”
“You’ve never embroidered a thing in your life,” Evie laughed.
“Well!” Joey cried defensively. “I can’t think of anything else to do! I’m stuck in this house all day while Brian’s at work!”
Evie’s jaw practically dropped at her younger sister’s ludicrous statement. “Are you quite serious?”
“Yes! I’m bored out of my mind!”
“Joey! There are so many things you could do outside of the house!”
“Oh?” Joey asked, quirking an eyebrow. “Such as? And don’t say planting a garden, you know my thumb is the opposite of green.”
“I can think of any number of things you could get involved in! Like -- the orphanage, for example. They’re always in need of help!”
Joey’s brow furrowed softly, and the corners of her mouth turned down in thought.
Hmm. The orphanage.
...Why had she never thought of that? She hadn’t been around children too much, but the ones she’d met in her adulthood had certainly seemed rambunctious and clever enough to keep her thoroughly occupied. It wasn’t too far from the village, and it would certainly be much better than trying to embroider all day.
“Evie,” Joey said softly. “I believe... you have come up with a wonderful idea.”
For a split second, the expression on Evie’s face was one of surprise. It quickly morphed to one of satisfaction, however, and she tipped her chin into a satisfied nod. “Of course, I have.”
Before Joey’s train of thought could get permanently derailed onto thoughts of the orphanage, she turned back to her older sister.
“Now, why did you come to see me?” she asked directly. Joey had never been one to mince words.
Evie instantly frowned, though, her forehead wrinkling adorably. “Why do I need a reason to come see you?”
“Because... I mean, don’t you, especially, always need a reason to leave the house?”
“...Well, yes.”
Joey simply smirked triumphantly.
“The thing is... it’s rather a... well, a private topic,” Evie replied in hushed tones.
Before Joey had the chance to ask what her sister could possibly mean by that, the door opened, and the cook ambled in with the tea tray.
Evie sat silently as the cook set down the tray and poured tea into two floral, porcelain cups.
“Thank you, Mrs. Whitmore,” Joey grinned before taking one of the cups and handing it to her sister.
Mrs. Whitmore dipped into a curtsy before shuffling out of the room, closing the door behind her.
It took less than half a second for Joey to focus all of her attention back on Evie.
“What could you possibly mean by ‘a private topic’?” she asked in hushed -- but hurried -- tones.
Evie’s cheeks immediately pinkened, and Joey’s mind went right into the gutter.
“I’m just... nervous,” Evie gulped.
Joey waited as long as she possibly could for her sister to continue... which ended up being about three seconds.
“About the wedding night?”
Evie’s cheeks pinkened some more, and her brows rushed down to wrinkle her forehead. “No! I mean, yes, but I’m not -- just -- getting married, in general. And moving away from home and being mistress of such a large estate and -- there are just so many changes, and I’m incredibly anxious about it all.”
“Ohhhh,” Joey nodded in understanding before taking a sip of her tea. “Yes, of course. You would be nervous about that.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” Evie murmured with a slight pout.
“You are a creature of habit, my dear,” Joey pointed out. “You like to be surrounded by things and places and people you already know, like books and our family. And you prefer to stay in the background. You don’t like attention -- never have. And now, suddenly, you’ll be in a new house with all the servants looking to you for direction and leadership. I should have guessed! My, you must be quite terrified!”
When Joey lifted her gaze to her older sister, the look on Evie’s face was not one of relief that Joey had just voiced the nagging thoughts in the back of her head.
No. Not one of relief in the slightest.
Her expression was one of absolute panic.
Hastily, Joey set her teacup down and reached over, resting her hand comfortingly on Evie’s knee. “Oh, my dear, you will be all right. I’m all right, aren’t I? And I moved from Mistletoe Manor to this... well, it can only be called a cottage, can’t it? It took a while to get used to, but having Brian with me helped tremendously! Truly, it took hardly any time at all to create a new routine and get settled here.”
Evie softly quirked one eyebrow at that. “But you’re embroidering to pass the time...”
Joey waved one hand through the air dismissively. “Oh, you know me. Always wanting to do things I’m frightfully bad at. I’ve never had a hobby like you, which is why you will be fine. I am much assured that Blackmon Abbey has a very well-stocked library. Does it not?”
Evie nodded, though she still looked just a bit anxious.
“Then you will be more than fine. There are probably an enormous amount of books in there you haven’t read, so if your husband is not on hand to ease your worries, you’ll have your books.”
After chewing on her lip for a moment or two, Evie shot her younger sister a hopeful glance. “It won’t be... too scary, will it?”
Joey shook her head vigorously. “My best advice is to simply talk to your husband-to-be. I know how much you hate talking about your feelings, but it must be done. And I promise you will feel better afterward.”
Knowing her sister was right -- for once in her life -- Evie nodded.
“I will,” she said with quiet determination. “Thank you, Joey.”
Joey, looking entirely too pleased with herself, removed her hand from her sister’s knee and took her teacup again.
“You are most welcome,” she said with a confident grin. For she was feeling quite confident. She had just given her sister some smashingly wonderful advice, and she was currently devising a plan to keep herself occupied.
Things were looking up!

Warnings: Language?? But it’s pretty PG.
When you walk into the coffee shop, you're immediately hit by the warmth. You notice the dimly lit lights, the empty tables, the soft indie music playing quietly over the speakers. You notice how it's the complete opposite of the bustling life outside in the cold November weather. You also notice the smell of hot chocolate brewing behind the back counter.
“Be with you in a second,” the barista behind the counter yells without looking up from his order. You stand at the register patiently, opting to pull out your phone to make the wait go by faster. After a few minutes you hear a “What can I get for you?” causing you to look up.
And when you do, you're floored.
Shit, he’s beautiful, you think. The most beautiful, fierce, feline eyes are staring at you expectantly. Don't just stand there, give him your order!
“Uhm, I'll get a small hot chocolate please,” you say, rather shakily. “Alrighty,” he replies while scanning the screen in front of him. While he rings in your order, you can't help but stare. From his carefully styled raven black hair to his perfectly pointy nose, he was perfection.
You almost don't hear him when he gives you your total, brought back down to earth when his sharp eyes meet yours. You stand there for a second before realizing he’s waiting on you to pay. You hurriedly look down and start digging into your wallet for your card. When you look up again, he's looking at you with a quizzical brow and an upturned smirk, almost knowingly. You give him your card while keeping your eyes down, not daring to make eye contact.
After swiping your card and giving it back, he turns to the various stacks of upside-down cups and gets started on your hot chocolate. While he's making your drink, you get lost in his features once again. God, how can one human be so gorgeous? Honestly, what normal person has hair that nice? Does he use mousse to get those waves? And that body? How can someone look so angelic and so sinful at-
“You don't have to wait at the counter,” you quickly avert your eyes from his ass and to his face to find him already looking at you. “I can just bring it to your seat,” he says with yet again another smirk.
Shit, he knows. Shitshitshitshit.
“Uh, I- Uh, I actually just wanted it to go,” you stumble out.
Saved by the bell, the machine in front of him dings and he brings his attention back to your drink. He pushes the button and starts filling your cup with the brown liquid and you're saved for a few seconds. For the first time since you walked through the cafe door, you're not focused on the gorgeous barista and instead focused on the delicious smell of hot cocoa. After finishing your drink, he puts a lid on your drink and turns to walk back to the register you’re standing opposite of.
“Here you go” he says with a tight-lipped smile as he holds your drink out to you. You grab it and hastily turn on your heels. “Have a good day” you squeak out, walking like hell for the door. You're just about to break free when you hear a “Wait!” over your shoulder, making you pause in your tracks.
You take a deep breath before slowly turning to see the cute barista leaning with an elbow against the back counter and- you guessed it- another smirk spread across his lips. His eyes are mischievous this time, and you anticipate that what he’s about to say is going to ruin you.
“On a scale of one to ten, where do you think my ass falls?”
Your head falls back with a slight chuckle and he stands up straight, walking around the counter towards you. “Cause honestly, I’ve always thought I had a strong seven, maybe an eight on occasion, but I don't know. I've always thought of myself as a Kim but maybe I'm just a Kendall.”
He’s only a few steps away when he stops, towering over you. The way he’s looking at you, with his small crescent eyes and blindingly bright smile, you could faint. You break free from his trance, turning towards the door and feigning annoyance by rolling your eyes with a smile on your face. Before turning the knob, you’re stopped once again when he says lowly, “My name’s Younghyun.”
This time when you turn, he’s only a few inches from you, smile much softer, but still there. You can hear your heart pounding, and you're pretty sure he can hear it too.
“Y/N,” you reply. He repeats your name and lets out a breath, still sporting that beautiful smile, still sporting that twinkle in his eye. You could get used to this, you think.
Your moment is broken by the door opening, a man outside the threshold silently begging for you to let him into the warm shop. Younghyun greets the man and quickly walks behind the counter while you're blurting apologies, both of you equally flustered. After apologizing a hundred times, you rush out of the shop and back into the cold.
You curse as you walk down the street to your apartment, trying to keep your winter coat as tight to your body as possible and taking sips of your drink every now and then. When you get to your building, you carefully use your free hand to pick your keys out of your purse and let yourself into your apartment. You plop straight down on the couch, studying the hot chocolate in your hand and thinking about the cute barista, Younghyun.
Younghyun.
You spin the cup in your hand round and round, thinking of the fairy lights wrapped around the menu board, they way they brought out the hues of brown in his eyes, the way his hair shined in them. You're snapped out of your reverie when you see writing peeking out from under your fingers placed on the cup. You move your hand around to the back of the cup and bring it closer to your eyes. On the cardboard gripper wrapped around the cup reads:

You immediately sit up straight. He was into you? You didn’t make a complete idiot out of yourself? Oh my god, stay calm. He's just a guy, right. Just a nice, funny, beautiful, guy. No pressure, right? Noooo pressure at all.
You pull your phone out of your coat pocket with shaky hands and unlock it, tapping the new message button. Your thumb hovers of the screen. It's not like you don't want to, that's quite the opposite. Is he pitying you? Has he changed his mind by now?
God, just do it already.
You finally type his number in and take a deep breath.
Great, now you just have to type a message. What do you say?
'Hi! This is Y/N, how are you?’
You think on it for a second before backspacing. Too basic. Ummm funny! Try funny.
‘if you were a coffee, you'd be a cutepaccino.’
You immediately backspace. Okay, what the hell was that? After going through a million different options, you eventually settle on something.

You stare at your phone for the next ten minutes before placing it on the couch cushion beside of you, deciding to forcibly put your mind on something else. You walk to your bedroom and start doing your night routine, trying to distract yourself. After changing into your pajamas and washing your face, you'd done nothing but watch TV, not daring to overthink the text. The minutes turn into hours and you start to lose hope. Maybe you should've just sent what you’d typed first. He’s probably changed his mind about you. It's when you're staring out the window and drinking your nightly tea that you hear your phone buzz.
The nerves that had been long gone are coming back in an instant. You run to your phone, stargazing long forgotten. You pick your phone up, though it almost slips from your sweaty palms. Your phone is lit up with only one notification.

You break your intense attention away from your phone and clutch your mug to your chest, mind going a hundred miles an hour. You set your mug down in the sink and head to your bed, ready to get under the sheets (although you probably won't sleep at all tonight).
The next day when you arrive at the sandwich shop, ten minutes early, Younghyun is in the corner, already seated. Your eyes find his, already looking at you. You're greeted by a hot chocolate and a gorgeous smile, and that smile doesn't leave for the rest of the date. You guys talk about books, movies, how he's a bassist in a band with his best friends, and how you're in love with the stars in the sky, though neither of you know you’ll also fall in love with the ones in his eyes. And when it's time to leave, he walks you to your apartment and leaves a sweet kiss on your lips. He does the same thing the next time you meet. And the next. And the next, until it becomes a regular routine. Until his kisses and hot chocolate become as normal as taking the bus every morning or looking at the sky before drifting away every night. And even after winter is long gone and summer brings it’s sunny skies and warm weather, his sweet kisses and hot chocolates are still a constant.

Description: Having a soulmate is such a wild concept. Some believe it’s because true love is what makes the world work, some believe it’s a curse that has been thrown upon us by the Greeks and their concept of love and some just want to enjoy the ride. There are some people that decide to ignore the fact that someone is on the other side of the line and some that search for the other half for years and years, never to be found. The world is so big, isn’t it? It also wouldn’t be nice enough to place all soulmates in the same city, would it?
Having a soulmate is such a wild concept.
Some believe it’s because true love is what makes the world work, some believe it’s a curse that has been thrown upon us by the Greeks and their concept of love and some just want to enjoy the ride. There are some people that decide to ignore the fact that someone is on the other side of the line and some that search for the other half for years and years, never to be found. The world is so big, isn’t it? It also wouldn’t be nice enough to place all soulmates in the same city, would it?
While ignoring a soulmate can be hard, some people try their best. You see, people find their soulmates through scars. It’s intimate, it tells a story, it connects people, it’s also a way to remember dates. Whenever one of the halves gets hurt, the other feels an annoying pinch wherever it was that the first one felt. As soon as it scars, the soulmate will end up with the same scar on their body: being it a straight thin line or something else.
Some people end up hurting themselves, trying to make their scars more visible so they can find their soulmates easily. Some take as much care as necessary to not hurt the other. Some end up forgetting there are people on the other side of the line.
Y/N for example, had a very fun childhood. She would run up and down, clueless to the fact that someone could be feeling several pinches during the day on the other side of the line. It was only after her third time on the hospital to get stitches that her mother explained the whole concept to her. It didn’t change much, nowadays the only thing that’s different is that fact that the girl apologizes to the universe whenever she cuts her fingers on something - which happens a lot.
Alice still has doubts about the whole concept of other people feeling pain. Yes, she has been awaken by sudden pinches to her body several times. Yes, she has tiny marks from tiny cuts all over. And yes, her soulmate might as well be the clumsiest person she has ever heard about. But at the same time, what if he’s a gangster from New Orleans who’s been held at knife point way more than once? What if he’s sick and these are all needles? They don’t tell you who the other person is. All you have to do is feel, wait and hope.
They are roommates, living in Los Angeles for three years now. And even though they are friends and live together, they barely see each other. Y/N is in college, studying to be something according to society - aerospace engineer according to her degree. And Alice is studying the fine arts - more especially dance itself. No one knows how they ended up being roommates, the good thing is that it works.
It was Monday morning and it was summer. If there’s one thing Y/N hates about going back to class after summer break is the fact that Los Angeles burns during the summer. No amount of sunscreen, water or iced tea is enough to make the heat go away. And of course she was running late.
[10:05 AM] idk?? i’m pretty sure sungjin knows tho. he’s more involved in the art scene than i am. how the hell don’t you know? -Y/N
Y/N was trying to walk, type and finish her tea all at once. It was obviously not working as she now had yet another bruise on her knee. But then again, was it her fault that Alice had lost the number from the art department who had the number from the gallery she had already lost? Maybe. But still.
[10:05 AM] Then text him! He’s your brother, not mine! I need the number. My professor said today is the last day to apply for their showcase and I can’t miss it. Everyone is going to be there! - AP

She wasn’t sure why this showcase was so important for the people around her - both her roommate and her brother were going insane because of it. Apparently someone important would be watching and they had to be there. It was only when she was walking into class that she felt a pinch right on the middle of her hand, biting on her lower lip. “Well, I’m sorry, okay? I was in a hurry,” she said quietly, as if the person had been giving her a warning about the scraped knee. Y/N rolled her eyes and walked into the class, ready to start the semester again.
Alice had just woken up, texting her roommate about the number she had spilled coffee over a couple weeks ago. This showcase could make her career way easier since several important people from Los Angeles would be watching. UCLA would very often hold them and only the luckiest and best students would be selected to actually participate - anyone could apply, but only a few would be under the spotlight.
She knew about Y/N’s brother and his band - which is now called Day6 apparently - and some other people from her classes were all applying too. Her professors had all told her she had a chance at being chosen, which was always a great boost. But she had lost the phone number and now she had no clue who she should send the forms to. It wasn’t as if she would have called them if she had the number a few days ago, but of course she decided to leave it all for the last minute, lost the number, would never get an e-mail response on time and would have to walk all the way to the administration building. That is, of course, if Y/N can’t get the number from her brother.
She knew the girl would probably turn off her phone during class, so she moved to be ready when her class is over. Alice took a shower, made breakfast, managed to burn her finger on the pan she was making pancakes. This definitely wasn’t her lucky day. She was so used to being the one on the receiving end of those annoying pinches that she didn’t even noticed she had hurt herself and it would probably leave an annoying scar. Was it a gangster that felt it? And thought that maybe she hurt her finger chopping someone’s body? Does her soulmate think she’s a criminal too?
The girl shook her head. Better leave all the soulmate thoughts for later. Now she had to focus on how to get her application forms to the gallery holding the showcase on time. The same forms she still didn’t have… because she had lost the phone number. She was going to kill Y/N.
Sungjin had managed to gather new people for his band a couple months ago. He has been trying to be the leader of a band for years now, but this is the only formation that managed to stay together for longer than a month. He hasn’t even invited his sister to know the guys because he knows she just won’t show up - maybe she was forced to meet all the other twelve people he tried to have a band with and has given up on him by now.
Jae, Brian, Wonpil, Dowoon and Sungjin are Day6. The band that originally had six members, but went down to five and decided to stick to the name - they already had posters and t-shirts made, they couldn’t just make new ones with a new name.
They were rehearsing that morning when Brian felt a weird pinch on his knee, making him look down and roll his eyes. Every single day he would feel pain somewhere because of his soulmate. The person that knows no balance apparently and likes paper cuts. There’s no other explanation for how many times his knees hurt a day or his fingers. He waited until the song was done to grab his pick and press it as hard as possible against his palm - watch out! there’s someone else here, dammit! - he wanted to tell this person. He hoped they would get it.
Wonpil didn’t notice the pain on his finger - number one: because he had most of them on band-aids already. Number two: because he was in the middle of a song, playing his keyboard and it was almost impossible to distract him from that. Number three: This just couldn’t be his soulmate, whoever they might be. Wonpil is the only one getting hurt because of how clumsy he is. He might have pressed too hard on a key, that’s all.
The other boys around them didn’t notice the other two ‘interacting’ with their soulmates, too busy rehearsing and learning all the new songs they had to. JYP would be at the showcase and they had an awesome chance to become something if the producer liked their vibe and their music - both Jae and Sungjin wouldn’t let the other three forget about the record deal they were dreaming about 24/7.

Y/N quickly texted Alice the number and moved to get lunch. She usually would walk all the way to the arts building to meet up with Alice, but her friend was too busy running around to finish her application for the showcase so all she did was walk to the restaurant she knew her brother and his band would have lunch at: McDonald’s. She knew Alice would judge her based on the diet they had been leading on for the past weeks: healthy and energetic, everything that would help Alice get her dance steps sharper, but she had no choice.
Sungjin saw his sister the moment she walked in, making a face at her and gesturing for her to join them. Y/N ordered her usual and then made her way towards the boys with her food. She doesn’t know them well yet - and might be afraid too since Sungjin’s bands never really last long - but she smiled and waved hello.
“How are you guys doing? I heard you finally decided on the songs for the showcase?” she asked with a smile and a boy - Jae? - answered way faster than her own brother.
“Yeah, we’re doing Congratulations and I Loved You,” he said with a big smile, moving his hands way too much as he spoke.
“Congratulations is the one I heard you guys playing last time, right?” Y/N smiled, stealing fries from his brother and showing him the tongue. “It’s a very good one. The lyrics are incredibly petty. Definitely one of my faves.”
She shrugged, making this other boy - Wonpil? - laugh and hit his knee on the table. It looked like the boy was definitely a horrible soulmate - maybe just as bad as her when it came to injuring themselves all the time.
“I wrote it,” Brian said, not smiling but making a face. “The chorus is about, you know…” he said, shrugging and then rolling his eyes. Y/N kept looking at him, waiting for him to finish the sentence and shrugging too when he didn’t.
“Sure, I know,” she said, making a face at Jae and Sungjin then and focusing on eating her food. Brian wanted to say the song was about his soulmate - at least the chorus - and the fact that what the fuck? this person is definitely unbelievable. But he decided to be quiet about it, maybe Y/N was one of those people who believed in soulmates way too much. Her brother definitely was. Sungjin has been looking for his other half for years now - Y/N is 100% sure it’s a girl from her calculus class, they have the same scar on their shoulder, but she’s not going to be the one telling him.
Alice ended up texting Y/N for them to meet up for lunch after she was done with her forms, but Y/N only texted back the address to the restaurant she was at. A couple minutes later a very annoyed Alice walked into the room - the table was actually full of ice cream, Y/N had bought her one. And was holding it up for the older one to get it.
“I hate you,” she said, rolling her eyes and squeezing herself into the seat next to her friend. Then she looked around, waving hello to the band.
“That’s the second time someone has told me that today, I’m starting to notice a pattern. All my friends hate me,” Y/N shrugged, shoving ice cream into her mouth to not say anything else. And, of course, enjoy her dessert
“Okay, so here’s the thing. I managed to fill in the applications. Turns out the gallery is not as far from our apartment as I imagined. I managed to call and tell the lady I was on my way. The moment I got there, I felt this weird pain on my knee,” she said, shrugging.
“I know the feeling,” Brian said quietly from the other side of the table, making Y/N shush him and wave for Alice to continue.
“I’m sure they’re only considering my application because the woman felt sorry for me. I mean, soulmates, right? There’s nothing we can do,” she said, shrugging. “My criminal of a soulmate must have gotten stabbed on the knee today,” she added then, making everyone laugh. No one noticed how red Wonpil’s cheeks got.
“You think your soulmate is a criminal?” Brian asked, laughing and rolling his eyes. Y/N felt like throwing her own cup of ice cream on his face so he would shut up. Why did her brother always get the most annoying band mates.
“It’s obviously a joke. He just gets hurt a lot I guess,” she shrugged, taking a bite from her own ice cream, staring at Brian with a very bored expression.
“Yeah, well. I call mine an asshole for getting hurt a lot, not a criminal,” Brian added, making most people roll their eyes.
“That’s because you have as much warmth in your heart as this ice cream does,” Jae said, eyeing Brian and making the rest of the people laugh. “Honestly though, soulmates are such a distant concept… No offense, Dowoon. But come on? How do we know for sure they’re not living in, I don’t know, China?”
“Exactly!” Y/N said, rolling her eyes and finishing her ice cream. “There’s no point in living wrapped in bubble wrap,” she shrugged and poked Alice on the side so the other would stand up. “I gotta go, kinda have classes now,” she waved at the boys - and even at grumpy!Brian - and hugged her brother.
Both girls ended up leaving the place to go to their afternoon classes. Y/N ended up asking Alice about the routine she had prepared for the showcase, in case she was selected, and the other started explaining it in words that made zero to no sense to the soon to be engineer.
Preparing for the showcase was chaos.
It was literal chaos.
A week after the forms had been delivered, the result came out. Both Alice and Sungjin’s band managed to get a spot. The order was comedy, musicians and then dancers. Y/N realized she would have to stay the entire night, Alice was freaking out because she would have to wait longer than expected and the boy were always bickering about chords and tunes.
The dancer was spending extra hours in the studio to rehearse. From time to time Y/N would show up with food, coffee, vitamins and even water sometimes. She was pretty much out of a roommate for two weeks - seeing Alice only late at night. The same happened to her brother and his band - Day6 was spending extra hours playing those two songs, trying to make them sound both perfect and not so perfect at the same time.
The soulmates were going insane. Alice was starting to get stressed at hers, each time she was in the middle of her choreography her hands would hurt or something else and she would end up getting distracted and then hurt herself. Not a good time for him to be chased by criminals. Wonpil on the other hand was finally noticing that he might have a real soulmate, since every single time he managed to hurt himself, he would get a reply. Something that would hurt just as much but on his knees, elbow and back even.
Brian got a break for two days and a half, but soon his asshole of a soulmate managed to hurt something again. But as rehearsing was going insane, his fingers weren’t giving his soulmate a break either. The bass can be a very cruel instrument when you don’t give yourself a break - and the boys didn’t have time for breaks. Y/N was starting to get annoyed, not because of the pain, but she would drop things constantly because of it. Holding her phone? Sorry, can’t, fingertips hurt out of nowhere and so on.
They barely had time to meet, to talk or to be excited about the showcase. They were all too focused and determined to make a better future for themselves. To get noticed, maybe be booked, get a job, a contract even. Who knows?
When the showcase finally came, they were all tired. Exhausted even. With bag under their eyes and feeling like zombies. But the eyeliners were on point, the choreographies too and the instruments were all correctly tuned. They had practiced way too much to notice how fast the previous two weeks had passed, buzzing with coffee and anything that would give them energy to go on.
Y/N tried to take care of them all, taking food and water with her every time she managed to visit the band or the dancer but as she had her own tests and articles to read, it wasn’t as easy as she expected it to be. She managed to get the day off from her activities to go to the show case to support her friends.
“You’re going to do great,” she said, offering Alice some of her water, waving at a couple people she knew that were also at the backstage of the showcase.
“You said that eight times already. In the last hour,” Alice said, giving her friend the look as she took the water from her hands and sipped from the bottle. She ended up keeping the bottle, pressing it against her chest for a moment.
“I’m just trying to help. You’re incredible, you’re just as good as that Jimin guy we saw that other night,” Y/N pointed out, taking her phone out of her pocket to check in on her brother.
“Okay, let’s not go there. Park Jimin is my senior. We all know how great and perfect he is. You can’t just compare us,” Alice rolled her eyes at Y/N, making the younger one laugh and shrug. As if she was saying she would do as she wanted.
Y/N was allowed to stay backstage until the showcase started, just like all visitors and family. She waited until her brother showed up, moving to wrap her arms around him in a hug. Brian didn’t notice when she hit her chin on Sungjin’s shoulder, laughing and shrugging at the pain. A few seconds later, there was Brian complaining about pain on his own chin - which Y/N didn’t pay attention to.
“I hope you guys do great today!” she said with a smile, hugging her brother one more time. And then moving on to hug Dowoon, Jae and Wonpil. They had become close since she had started visiting their rehearsals a bit more. “I promise to yell the lyrics to everything. Start some fanchants even. Day6’s number one fan,” she continued, making them laugh.
Brian was looking grumpy - as usual - but managed a smile. The others were all happy, but he looked worried. Anxious even. Y/N walked closer to him, placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed a little. “Your petty song is the best petty song there is, alright. Whoever this JYP guy is, he better love it,” she said, giving him a smile. “Break a leg,” she winked and moved away, chuckling a little and waving to her brother. This time, he noticed when the girl almost tripped on her way out and hurt her hand on the door frame as she tried to keep her body steady. She looked back, laughed softly and waved at them. Brian was the only one stuck staring down at his own hand.
Y/N walked out and moved to her seat, taking her phone from her pocket and opening a few apps while she waited for the showcase to start - and her friends to perform.
On the backstage, Brian was pretty much freaking out. He was torn between concentrating for their performance and thinking about what it meant that he felt a thin cut on his palm the moment Y/N hurt her own hand at the dorm frame. It must be a coincidence, he kept thinking, but kept being reminded of all the times he saw her with batman bandaids all over, bruised knees and arms. There was also this time he caught Sungjin and Wonpil talking about feeling bad whenever their soulmates get hurt and he heard the older one talking about his sister - how she gets hurt a lot, but always say an apology to the universe every time she does it.
He didn’t want to think about the fact that he might be able to stop calling his soulmate asshole and start calling them Y/N.
Sungjin was the one to walk over and shake Brian out of the well of thoughts he had fallen into. “Whatever it is that she said, she doesn’t mean it,” he said chuckling a little. Brian looked at him with a very confused expression. “My sister. You’re staring and it looks like you ate something that, you know, tasted bad. If she said something horrible, she doesn’t mean it,” he smiled, shrugging.
“Oh. No, no, no, it’s not it,” Brian said, taking a deep breath and rolling his eyes. What an idiot. He’s such an idiot. “She was nice, she said the petty song is a good song, whatever that means,” he added, making Sungjin laugh.
“Yeah, she sucks at it,” he said, shaking his head.
Alice who had been looking for a familiar face, found the boys at that exact moment. Finding them was easy, tall guys with colorful hair, being able to handle Brian’s sour face was something else. All she did was smile, wave her way past them and walk all the way to Jae and Wonpil.
Dowoon was too busy stretching his arms and listening to music, his way of getting in the zone and relaxing before they played their music. To a producer. A very famous producer. That could like or hate them. No pressure.
They sat down and talked, the two guys and Alice. Talked about college, shared funny stories, laughed at some people that were too busy freaking out - even though they were freaking out themselves. They stretched together when it was time too and then the boys moved to play their songs. Y/N had been texting Alice this entire time, but her friend had left her phone inside her backpack. When the speaker announced that Day6 would be the next band, the younger sister stood up and clapped. Yelled even. They deserved it after all the hard work.
Brian had vanished for an hour - while Alice, Jae and Wonpil talked - and came back even angrier than before. Sungjin was sure he had been punching walls and screaming inside empty rooms, but he decided not to say anything. The lights on the stage were bright and they could barely see the people sitting, but it was possible to hear Y/N yelling the band’s name and how much she wanted them to do well.
“Hello Los Angeles!” Sungjin said while the others got ready, giving the crowd a big smile. “We’re Day6, a pop rock band. We’re going to perform two songs for you today,” he said, chuckling a little. “I hope you guys like it and clap along,” he smiled, leaning back to grab his acoustic guitar.
“The first song is called Congratulations,” Brian said and suddenly the entire band was staring at him, but trying to play it cool. That wasn’t on the script at all. “I wrote this a while ago about my soulmate,” he continued, biting on his lower lip and adjusting the bass in front of him. “I hope she understands I still mean it,” both Jae and Sungjin stared at him again.
Brian had found his soulmate? When? Who the hell is she? Of course they wanted to ask and of course they couldn’t. They had to start the song but right before they could, it was possible to hear Y/N’s voice from the crowd. “Petty as fuck, guys!” Brian looked like he wanted to murder her for a second, before rolling his eyes and putting his game face (or show face?) on.
Sungjin counted to three and they started the song.
During their two songs, Y/N’s fingers were killing her. So was her wrist and back. She definitely wanted to stand, to scream the lyrics and clap. Wave her arms even, but the pain was annoying. Taking the pictures she wanted to take also wasn’t happening.
Alice was watching them from the side of the stage, hidden behind curtains. She was clapping to the songs, playing attention to Jae and Wonpil - she had ended up becoming closer with the two. They both looked so happy and had such great voices. She was sure they were giving everything they had so the songs would come out perfect.
It was during song number two that she noticed a pattern. See, here’s the thing. She always loved paying attention to people’s hands while they were playing instruments. Or in general even. And Wonpil plays the keyboard. It’s impossible for her not to stare or anything. Besides, he has a very bright red bandaid wrapped around his middle finger. Every time he pressed a key with that finger, she would feel as if someone was poking her own finger with a cloth pin. She could remember feeling something sharp pressing against her own finger that morning and now this.
Biting on her lower lip, Alice took a deep breath and wrapped her arms around herself. Wrong time for that gangster she had imaged show up and look like Wonpil. Cute, wearing chokers, playing the keyboard, singing about girlfriends that left and never came back. Horrible timing, terrible even.
This showcase was already making them way more anxious than it was supposed to be. Day6 killed it on the stage, everyone cheered and clapped for them even though Y/N was the loudest and impossible to miss. The boys moved backstage as soon as the performance was done - which was the exact moment Y/N’s hands stopped hurting. They were all happy, hugging each other, laughing and smiling. Alice walked over to them to congratulate them, hugging the ones she was close to. She thought about Wonpil’s hands for a moment, but decided she didn’t have the time to worry about that now. It was almost her turn at the showcase.
Brian vanished as soon as the hugs were done. No one knew where the hell he had gone to, but they heard him saying he needed some air. He ended up leaving his bass behind so the rest of the band figured he would be back later. They had to wait at the backstage until the showcase was done, so they all sat down and started texting Y/N - who had blow up their phones with pictures, texts and emojis.
A while later, it was Alice’s time to go on the stage. The song she had chosen was called Flame of Love and the choreography was hers. This time, her friend was quiet while watching. She was indeed just as good as that senior Y/N couldn’t remember the name now and she couldn’t take her eyes out of her friend’s dance moves. They were soft, gentle and precise. They also made the song sound way better than it did.
The boys were all watching, except for Brian who was MIA still. Jae and Sungjin were the most excited ones, gasping and smiling and cheering. Wonpil watched with a smile, standing still, arms wrapped around his body. Whoever looked from the outside could think he was standing as still as possible just to be sure he wouldn’t hit anything. It was almost instinct for him, standing still whenever he was paying too much attention to something.
When she was done, she thanked the audience and left the stage. The boys were there to hug her, smile and laugh. They all had only nice compliments to give her and Y/N was going crazy in the audience because all their phones were vibrating nonstop. Maybe she had created a new group chat. Maybe she wanted news on all of them. Maybe she was one of those very excited friends.
They had all been invited to Alice and Y/N’s apartment when the showcase was over - the girls had stocked up on wine and beer for celebrations. They would also order some pizzas. All the Day6 guys and the girls were there.
Getting in, the first thing they noticed was the mess. You would think an apartment shared by a future engineer and a dancer would be organized since they didn’t want to hurt themselves or lose any work, right? Wrong. Their apartment is a complete mess. Y/N has formulas in post-its all over the place and Alice just leaves her mixtapes everywhere. Brian’s first thought was no wonder she gets hurt all the time, but then he shook the thought away and walked in with his sour face.
“This place is a mess,” Brian said as he sat down on the couch, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms.
“You are a mess, do you want the free beers or not?” Y/N said from the kitchen, grabbing the wine opener and choosing a bottle from the shelf.
“They might be poisoned since you’re not drinking it,” he said and soon everyone in the room was making a face at him, Dowoon even threw a pillow on him just so he would stop being an idiot.
“I don’t drink beer,” Y/N shrugged, turning around and running her hand over the right side of her face. The same place Brian had been hit with a pillow.
“She’s adopted, don’t mind her,” Sungjin said from the fridge, where he had been distributing all the cans of beer. In the end Jae, Wonpil, Y/N and Alice ended up with glasses of wine while Brian, Dowoon and Sungjin had their cans of beer.
They cheered together, clanking their glasses and cans and wishing each other success after the showcase. “Here’s to future contracts and lots of money!” said Jae before sipping from his glass.
When the pizza arrived, the boys offered to go pick it up. Except Wonpil - who everyone was afraid would drop the pizzas - and Brian - who was in a pissy mood and no one knew why. Y/N and Brian were left alone inside, the two sitting on the couch and ignoring each other, while Alice and Wonpil walked outside to the balcony.
“Hey, I have something to ask you,” she started, glad that the alcohol had already made its way to her brain because she would never be able to have this conversation sober.
Wonpil nodded, sipping from his wine and leaning against the cold wall of the balcony. “Sure. I mean, playing the keyboard is not as hard as I make it look like,” he joked, making the other one laugh and smile.
“It would definitely be hard for me,” she started, raising her right eyebrow but then shrugged. “But that’s not it…” she bit on her lower lip and sipped from her wine glass again. “I was wondering, and now I realize how creepy this will sound, but do you happen to have a scar that looks like a star on your thigh?” he said, twisting her nose a little. It was one of the few scars that were her fault - she had fallen on top of a bike when she was young and the star on the bike was what left a scar.
It took Wonpil a moment to think. “Oh…” he started, eyes widening and smile growing a little. “So that’s what it is, uh,” he added, chuckling a little and smiling. “I mean, I always wondered what it was…” he smiled at her, leaning his head to the side.
“I fell on a bike when I was a kid,” Alice explained, shrugging and smiling. It was easier than expected, Wonpil was such a nice person to be around - despite how clumsy he is all the time. “Sorry.”
“Oh… No, you don’t even need to say sorry,” he started, placing his free hand on her wrist, smiling at the warmth of her skin. “I mean, I’m sure it must be annoying for you to always feel me doing stupid things,” he said, chewing on the insides of his cheeks. “I sorta need glasses?” he made a face, making Alice laugh. “I don’t wear them as you can tell,” he pointed at his face with the glass and then sipped from it.
“I’ve grown used to them… It was only annoying at the beginning and last week, during rehearsal,” she looked down at his hand on her wrist. “Oh, and I’ve thought you were a criminal for so long. I was sure you were part of the mafia or something. I mean, c’mon. Only a criminal gets to get hurt this much and still live, right?”
They talked for a few more minutes, laughing and exchanging looks. They were starting to talk about what to do from now when the pizza arrived, making Y/N cheer inside while Brian looked constipated.
With a quick look, Wonpil gestured for them to do in. And they did. Hand in hand, huge smile on their faces, each one holding a glass of while. It looked like an engagement scene from a bad movie - Jae would comment later. “Hey, guess what we just figured out!” Alice said, looking at Wonpil. “Apparently my soulmate isn’t a criminal, he’s just a clumsy keyboard player,” she shrugged, making everyone both laugh and look at them with wide eyes. There were more drinks, more toasts and even more hugs. Everyone was excited about the two, finding your soulmate is definitely something to celebrate - especially in such a huge world.
Being happy, young and drunk has its own consequences. For Alice and Wonpil it meant sharing their first kiss while their friends whistled around them, for Jae it meant spilling wine on a white shirt and for Y/N it meant hitting her shin against the coffee table
“Ouch… I knew we shouldn’t have bought this table,” she said, standing up and rubbing her own leg. “Sorry, bud,” she said, looking up and then shrugging, reaching for her glass of wine. Brian was frozen, staring at his own leg and having the confirmation that his soulmate was the girl right in front of him. Sungjin noticed too and was about to make a very excited comment when Brian stood up and pointed at Y/N.
“You’re the asshole!” he pretty much yelled, making everyone stop. Y/N was the last one to turn around and was surprised he was pointing at her.
“What did I do this time?” she looked confused, not realising what was going on.
“What did you do! What don’t you do? You’re always doing something. Always. You never leave me alone. Never let me have some goddamn peace and quiet!” he kept yelling, his friends still looking confused as fuck.
“Hey… Brian… I’m sure this was a misunderstanding… Y/N doesn’t even hangout with us that often…” Jae tried to help while Y/N shrugged, sipping from her glass.
“It’s not a misunderstanding. She gets hurt all the time. Everywhere. She managed at the showcase and here. Everywhere she goes, she finds a way to hurt something. Do you even know what it’s like to be on the other side of that?” everyone was quiet, looking from Y/N to Brian. And then from Alice to Wonpil - who were still holding hands, the newest couple of the group. “... And don’t you even dare say you apologize every time.”
“Well, how the fuck should I know I had such a grumpy person on the other side? I didn’t complain once during all these weeks about the fact that I couldn’t hold anything because you murdered your fingers playing bass!” Y/N started yelling back at him. “I couldn’t take a single picture today because I couldn’t hold my phone, Brian.” She quickly put the pieces together, of course it would be Brian.
“My life has been nothing but annoying because of you,” he said, rolling his eyes and sipping from his beer.
“That’s it. Fuck off. This is my house. I live here. I’m not going to sit and listen to an idiot blame me for living. I’m sorry if I was happy that a fucking family had chosen to raise me and that they let me play outside just as much as I wanted,” she said, pointing at her brother. “And I never in this life ever have broken a bone, which isn’t something I can say for you. You don’t even know how much that shit hurts,” she rolled her eyes, finishing her wine and then looked at Brian.
He was picking his things up, making his way to the door. “I knew it. I knew this whole soulmate shit was a bad idea. I shouldn’t have listened to my mom. Or your guys even.”
“Well, and I wished you lived in China, Brian Kang,” she said, flipping him the fingers as he walked off.
“He’s actually Korean…” Sungjin said, and then added. “Which of course doesn’t matter,” he had seen the face Y/N had made at him.
She took a deep breath, poured more wine into her glass and then almost chugged it whole. Then poured more and went back to drinking it in sips. “So this sucks…” she started, sipping from her glass again. “But, uh… I mean, the showcase was a success and we have the best couple ever right here. No need to worry, right?” she pointed at Alice and Wonpil.
They went to bed late - it was after five when the boys decided to go home and the girls even took a shower before going to bed. Alice would even dare to say Y/N wasn’t looking as happy as usual, but it might have been the drinks and how tired she was. This whole Brian thing wouldn’t have left her feeling bad now, would it? The only way to know for sure was to ask - and she sure as hell wouldn’t ask because she had no idea what to do with the answer.
Waking up after bottles of wine and celebration is never a good idea. Especially when you live in Los Angeles and it’s summer, which means that the sun is out and it’s going to be bright wherever you go. The headache is a must. Y/N opened her eyes, groaning and reaching for her glasses. She adjusted them on her face and rolled to the side, giving up on getting up just now. With a yawn, she reached for her phone, licking her lips as she felt like she had swallowed a handful of cotton balls.
She had four texts to read. Two were from her mother, one from Sungjin and the other from Alice.
[8:05 AM] Sungjin told me you found your soulmate!!!!!!!!! - Mom [8:15 AM] Oh. He told me the rest of the story now. Don’t worry about this Brian guy, sweetie. He’s a jerk and he will change his mind. You were a very active kid. I do not feel sorry for raising you that way. He will have to deal. What a child really! Ridiculous. - Mom.
[8:20 AM] I might have told mom about the Brian situation. She’s not taking it as well as I imagined she would. -PS
[11:46 AM] Wonpil and I are having lunch together today!!!!!!! He made me breakfast - there are some waffles in the fridge if you want. And now we’re out on a date. Wake up so I can freak out over text if this goes wrong!!! -AP
She stared at her phone screen for a while, groaning when all the texts reminded her of what had happened the night before. Y/N sat up, rubbing her eyes and adjusting the glasses one more time, opening her eyes slowly and staring at the phone again, finally checking the time to realize it was two in the afternoon already. Maybe texting her mom back first was the best idea. She could be very protective of her kids and she has been waiting for an answer for hours now, Y/N was actually impressed that the Korean woman didn’t just break into her apartment to check if she’s okay or not.
The new couple had just finished lunch and were on their way to the movies. Alice had warned Wonpil that watching moving while still a bit hungover and after having lunch was a bad idea, but he was just too excited and she couldn’t resist anymore. They had their hands pretty much laced together as they had been holding each other’s for the entire day.
Alice had never seen herself as someone who would go on cute dates, hold hands and smile at whatever her partner said. But this was exactly what she was doing right now. Wonpil had never seen himself as someone who would find his soulmate and fall instantly in love with them, not have that person be angry at him for ages and smile non stop while around them, but here he is. And it’s just as cute, annoyingly cute even, as it sounds. They were made for each other, head to toe even.
The concept of soulmates is so wild. It’s crazy how two people can just click, that they can feel like getting home after a long day of work. It’s the first glass of wine after the biggest fight of the year with your boss. It’s eating the last piece of that fine chocolate you bought yourself. It’s exciting, overwhelming even, and it leaves you wanting more.
“Don’t you think we should talk to Brian?” Wonpil asked when they were waiting in line to get inside the movie theater. Alice had been thinking about it, but she wasn’t sure if mentioning the fiasco would make or break their date.
“Y/N kinda likes to deal with her shit herself,” she said, shrugging a little and then giving him a smile. “And it’s not like we can walk up to Brian right now and just tell him how to feel,” she added, frowning a little. “Besides… They might need some space,” she laughed, biting on her lower lip. “Knowing Y/N, she’s texting her mom to go shopping right now. I’ll get home and she’ll have new clothes to show.”
“When she shops the world seems better?” he said with a smile, laughing a bit.
“Oh, babe. When we all shop the world seems wonderful,” Alice laughed, leaning closer to press a kiss to his cheek. Wonpil smiled, leaned closer and pressed a kiss to her lips.
He was sure he would never get tired of it. The feeling of fireworks, of being ran over by a car and saved by some holy being at the same time. It was both the fall and getting back up again. It felt like he was giving a part of him away, but getting a part of her in return. If he had known pressing lips to his soulmate would be so intense he would have given it more thought, looked for her a bit harder, stared around looking for star scars a little longer. If there’s one thing Wonpil is sure now is that he’s going to do everything in his power to make his soulmate happy.
The movie wasn’t the best. They ate their popcorns, drank their water and shared the gummy bears but even with everyone around them screaming because of the movie, they fell asleep. Alice on Wonpil’s shoulder and the boy with his head lightly pressed against hers. Later that day Alice would point out that hangovers and movies are not a nice combination.
“And then! I don’t remember clearly okay, I was drunk… Bare with me,” Y/N said. She was sitting across from her mom at a cafe in LA. She had taken a shower, sloten a waffle from the fridge and got into an uber to her mom’s house. The Park have been living in Los Angeles for a while now, both Y/N and Sungjin were born in the US, but the kids don’t live with their parents anymore. They moved out as soon as they got into college, but they always visit their parents when they can. Especially their mom.
And right now, Mrs. Park was paying for the coffee while Y/N vented. She made a face when her daughter told her she had been drunk the night before, but shrugged and let her continue. “I mean, he started yelling. I thought he was angry about something because apparently he’s always angry about something. But he was angry at me. Because I get hurt a lot,” she rolled her eyes, taking a sip from her coffee. “I mean, I get it. It must suck. Actually… I know it sucks! Because I always feel them first. It’s not like I’m doing it on purpose,” she groaned, leaning back and crossing her arms.
“Are you really that angry at him?” her mom asked, a soft smile on her lips. How could she be so calm? Y/N would never understand that. How could she have been born - well, raised - from a woman that calm?
“I honestly just want him to apologize and stop being an ass. We’re gonna have to deal with it one day. I’m pretty sure he has the same weird scar on his thigh because I sure as well have the same on my arm, I checked,” she took a bite from her cake, pouting in front of her mother then.
“You’re just as stubborn as your brother,” the older woman chuckled while Y/N made a face, showing her the tongue for a second. “Oh, it’s not a bad thing. I know I raised both of you just as stubborn as I am.”
The younger one laughed, shaking her head and finishing her coffee. She was so glad she had this woman as her mom. The best mom someone could have asked for.
The semester continued as normal - stressful, filled with alcohol and assignments that maybe could have been more interested if paid enough attention to. Alice and Wonpil got closer and would host dinners to watch football games whenever the Pats played. Day6 was being booked for more shows after the showcase, more people wanted them to play at their parties or just pay to see them in a venue. They were getting bigger and bigger. Sungjin and that JYP guy were exchanging e-mails for a couple months now since the producer was a big fan of the energy the band has
Alice got a few jobs after the showcase too but as she was busy with the semester she couldn’t actually take more. Even though her professors were all supportive, she wanted to finish the course first and then work on getting bigger roles. The important thing was: she managed to get the attention of big people that day.
The thing is: Brian and Y/N have been playing a ridiculous game of hide and seek for three months now. She arrives early to every Day6 rehearsal and leaves just when he arrives. He comes up with horrible excuses to miss Sunday Night Football just because he knows she’s going to be there. She stopped going to McDonald’s because it’s near his apartment and he might be there. He stopped going to Starbucks because it’s right on the corner of her apartment and Alice mentioned once that Y/N always stops there for chocolate muffins. He was always angry and she was less active than before, afraid she might bump her knee and hurt him. He bought a box of five hundred bass picks so his fingers wouldn’t hurt that much anymore.
Their friends noticed. They noticed the first week, but whenever they confronted them about it both would call them out. They would say how ridiculous they were being, they would yell, tell them to fuck off and leave. Most of the time. Pouting and being stubborn was also an option. Brian and Y/N are perfect for each other because they happen to be everything the other is: stubborn, sarcastic, savage and have a difficult personality. They can also be aggressive and rude.
Sungjin was the one who came up with the idea. He was tired of listening to his mom complain about his sister and about Brian. One: because he loves his sister to pieces even though it might not seem like it from time to time and two: because Brian is one of his best friends and he also wants the best for him. The Park sibling might also love cake and birthday parties, that’s where the idea came from.
They were going to throw a surprise party for Brian’s birthday. And they would find a way to keep Y/N and Brian in the same room for more than fifteen minutes so they could talk. Or yell or fight or just communicated. That was the hardest part of the plan.
The easiest part was the food: Alice and Wonpil were in charge of that. Sungin offered to help and so did Dowoon. Jae was in charge of inviting Brian and making sure he would arrive on time - the excuse was up to him. Alice was in charge of making Y/N show up.
[6:58 PM] Okay. Listen. Pil wants to be cute and host one of those wine parties at his place this Saturday. I know we’ve been doing this at ours for forever now, but let him have this? Please? -AP
[6:59 PM] Ugh. Why tho. I don’t have excuses to wear pajamas at Wonpil’s house. -Y/N
[6:59 PM] You can wear sweats? A t-shirt? It doesn’t need to be fancy. He just wants to do something since you’re my roommate. And he’s my soulmate. His words. He wants to be a good… mate. -AP
[6:59 PM] Let it be known that I’m only going because he’s ridiculously cute. I might have to leave early tho. -Y/N
[7:00 PM] We’re not inviting him. -AP
[7:00 PM] What? -Y/N [7:00 PM] It has nothing to do with that idiot. -Y/N [7:00 PM] I actually have to be up early on Sunday. I might have forgotten to buy my mom’s birthday present. -Y/N
[7:01 PM] On a Sunday? -AP [7:01 PM] You? Shopping on a Sunday? -AP
[7:05 PM] Yeah. -Y/N [7:07 PM] Let Wonpil know I’ll show up. -Y/N
“Okay. She said she’ll show up!” Alice said, putting her phone on the coffee table in front of Wonpil’s couch. It was true that she was spending more time at his place since he lived alone and things were getting more serious than dates at the movies for the past months.
“Now we just have to convince Brian to show up,” he said, leaning closer and pressing a kiss to her cheek and then resting his head on her shoulder. “But that is Jae’s job now,” he added, pressing his lips together. “I mean, we also have to bake the cake and choose the wine.”
“You mean I have to bake the cake, right?” Alice said, looking at him with a smile on her lips. “I mean, I know Sungjin told you to help but I’m not letting you anywhere near my mom’s recipe. No offence but… Last time you decided to cook something we were left with salty soup.”
“It wasn’t that bad…” Wonpil started, pouting his lips and leaning back so he could look at her properly. “I did make you waffles that day though…” he said, raising one of his eyebrows.
Alice laughed, shaking her head a little. “You made waffles from a box. I mean, yeah. They were delicious. But still,” she leaned closer, pressing her lips to his. “I bake the cake. You pick the wine. I say we go with sparkling wine because that’s the one we use for celebrations,” she added, pressing another kiss to his lips.
“Fine. But I’ll make another soup one day that won’t taste salty. And you’ll have to try it,” he said, chuckling a little.
“Make sure it’s on a week day so I can order something fast just in case,” she said, making both of them laugh. They both leaned back on the couch, feet up on the coffee table and unpaused the movie they were watching. They still had three days to go until Saturday night.
“We’re going to Wonpil’s on Saturday,” Jae said, tapping on the table as he waited for his name to be called. Convincing Brian to meet him at Starbucks was already a huge victory, convincing him to go to Wonpil’s will have to be another one.
“I can’t go,” Brian said, shrugging and pulling his phone from his pocket, checking his texts and then pretending he had something very important to reply to, hoping Jae would just let it go. But Brian knew Jae, all of those were false hopes.
“It wasn’t an invitation actually. I was just letting you know that we’re all going to Wonpil’s Saturday night. It’s a band thing. And as a band we do have to go out together from time to time you know,” he said, sighing and then getting up to grab both his and Brian’s coffee.
The younger one was left on the table by himself, checking his twitter timeline. He did see Alice complaining about a TV show and Y/N telling her that the character only died because he was her favorite. They hadn’t unfollowed or blocked each other, it would be too obvious. Besides, they needed to know where the other was going so they could avoid the place at all costs.
“Band thing, you said?” Brian asked the moment Jae came back with the cups of coffee. “No girlfriends? Weird friends? Parents? Just a band thing?” he added, raising an eyebrow.
Jae shrugged and then sighed. “Duh, of course. We all know you two are being dramatic about it still. We’re not even trying to get you two to be together anymore,” he rolled his eyes and sipped from his drink.
“That’s not what I meant,” Brian said, feeling his cheeks getting warmer.
“Of course not,” Jae chuckled, shrugging one more time. “It’s gonna be just us, some stupid TV show and some beers. Trust me, it’s gonna be cool,” Jae added and Brian finally agreed to show up. He could deal with a band thing.
Brian arrived first since it was supposed to be a band thing and it would make no sense for Y/N to be there when all of the Day6 guys were there since it was a wine date. Alice and Y/N were going to be there in three hours so the band had some time alone with Brian.
Jae, Brian and Sungjin were sharing the couch while Wonpil was alone on an armchair. Dowoon was offered a chair but he decided to throw a pillow on the floor and sit there for a while. There was something on TV but none of them were paying attention - at least some had the decency to pretend they were. When Jae felt a pinch on his thigh he thought that would be the perfect time to bring the touchy subject up.
“How are things with Alice, Pil? Are you guys doing fine with the whole soulmate thing?” the word immediately caught Brian’s attention, making him look away from the TV and towards Jae - who wasn’t even looking at his friend.
“She makes me want to try to be a better version of me every single day,” he said, a smile on his lips. “And it might sound exhausting, but it isn’t. And it’s not like we’re the perfect match because we definitely aren’t…” he said, chuckling a little, shrugging. “It feels good being around her. It sorta calms me down, you know? And I’ve been way more careful,” he said, showing them his hands with a smile on his face.
“On purpose?” Brian asked, raising an eyebrow and sipping from his beer. He seemed curious and all of the other pretended they weren’t giving it much thought.
“It’s not like I was doing it on purpose for starters,” Wonpil chuckled, shrugging a bit. “It’s almost like my clumsiness has already done its job so I don’t need it as much anymore? Of course I still bump my knee on things all the time and have some bruises from door knobs, but it’s not as often as before,” he added, sipping from his own beer.
“What about you? Still thinks it’s a stupid idea?” Sungjin asked, poking Brian’s arm while he was taking a sip from his beer.
The bass player coughed a bit, gave Sungjin a very angry glance while the other just shrugged and sighed. “It is stupid. And it’s unfair that she’s your sister, I can’t say shit about her,” he said, raising one eyebrow. “But if she wasn’t and I could, I would definitely call her selfish. And arrogant. And an idiot,” he added then, raising his hands. “Of course, only if she wasn’t.”
The boys didn’t laugh, they just looked at Brian as if they pitied him. Dowoon was smiling to himself, shaking his head. “Dude. Stop being such a stubborn ass,” he said and then all of them started laughing. Apparently someone finally said what they had been trying to say for the past three months and a half.
Once the room fell silent again, they all went back to pretending the TV was super interesting. What a great whatever it was that they were watching.
Alice and Y/N got into the uber late because both decided that ten minutes was enough to get ready. Newsflash: it wasn’t. The older one was texting her boyfriend to let them know they were going to be late - and to please not let Brian leave. The best part of the plan was that Alice got a pair of keys so she wouldn’t need to ring the doorbell and probably scare Brian away. She would get in, lock the door and let Brian and Y/N figure out by themselves what was going on.
Of course she would sleep at Wonpil’s for five months just in case after this. Y/N might want to murder her.
“I was out with my mom a couple days ago and she said the only present she wants for her birthday is for me and Brian to finally get along,” Y/N said, rolling her eyes. “It’s ridiculous. She keeps mentioning him all. the. time. I think Sungjin has been updating her on everything that is going on and she’s afraid I might never talk to him again.”
They were going up the stairs to Wonpil’s apartment on the sixth floor because of course the evelavor was broken. “But maybe you guys should talk… You know, just to see if it was a misunderstanding or not. I’m sure he didn’t mean all of those things he said, Brian is not that big of an ass…” Alice tried, giving her friend a smile.
Y/N sighed, rolling her eyes. She took a deep breath because of the stairs and then looked up at Alice who was a few steps ahead of her. “He has a very cute face, doesn’t he?” he said with a soft laugh. “It’s a shame he’s a selfish arrogant dick,” she shrugged. “I’m not apologizing first or whatever he thinks I should do,” she added.
“Oh my God, you’re impossible,” Alice rolled her eyes and kept going up. “If you had to, I don’t know, apologize to someone to be able to live forever I’m pretty sure you’d rather die.”
“It’s not that deep,” the youngest one said, going faster so she wouldn’t be left behind.
“Oh, trust me. It is. You’re impossible,” Alice opened the door to the sixth floor, leaving the stairs and waiting for Y/N. The girls then walked to Wonpil’s door, the oldest one knocked and then unlocked it, letting Y/N go in first. The subject had changed, so she walked in and turned around to reply to Alice. The oldest one walked in, locked the door and smiled. Y/N was confused for a second, having no idea why her friend was smiling.
She realised then that it was her boyfriend’s apartment, so he must have been behind her. She turned around then with a smile on her lips to say hi to Wonpil, but the first face she saw was Brian’s.
There was betrayal, anger, tension, horror and stress. All of those on both their faces in minutes. Alice pressed her back against the door so Y/N wouldn’t leave and Jae stood up just in case Brian decided to throw a fit. The two were about to start yelling when Sungjin started talking.
“Listen, we had to do this. You two have been playing an unhealthy game of hide and seek for too long,” he stood up, walking so he would be in the middle and both could see him. “We have a band to deal with and, well, I have a family and Alice has a roommate. Jae has a best friend. It’s not as easy as you two think it is for us whenever you decide to just ignore each other,” he said, looking at both of them.
Brian was about to start, but then Alice cut him off. “And we both know you two are too stubborn to say you are sorry for whatever happen. Or to share your feelings. Or whatever. So I just want to let you know that you’re both locked in here until you solve your shit.”
“We just need you two to talk, alright. It might sound selfish of us but you two need to figure things out. You don’t even need to apologize, just talk. Get to know each other past the ‘asshole’ nickname you both have been using,” Wonpil added, raising an eyebrow and looking at them.
“Fine,” they both said at the same time, blushing as they looked at each other. And then looked away.
They did set this up but they also decided to give them privacy to sort their shit out. Wonpil told them that the terrace was empty and that they should make their way there even though Alice just wanted to lock them inside a room - Hunger Games style - and wait for them to get over it.
The elevator ride was awkward and they hushed out of it the moment they heard the ding, letting them know they were on the last floor. They took the stairs to the terrace, opening the door to a bright sunny fall day in Los Angeles. Y/N made sure to walk a few steps before sitting down, sighing and looking back at Brian. She was wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt as she thought they would be having a wine night. Brian was in jeans and a hoodie, making his way towards her and sitting down too, sighing as he did so.
“Listen, I’m not going to apologize for playing around as a kid-” Y/N started, but Brian shook his head and cut her off.
“That’s not what I was angry about,” he said, biting on his lower lip. “I mean, it was… For a while. But it’s not what I’m angry about,” he added then, making Y/N look at him with a very confused expression.
“So… Uh, okay. Yeah, I’ve got nothing. I’ve been bad mouthing you for almost four months now because I thought you had been holding stupid grudges against me since I was three,” she said, letting out a chuckle. “I know I wasn’t the most careful kid… But I was just so happy I got to do the things I was doing I didn’t think about a soulmate. Or you. I did apologize. Every time it happened… But I don’t see why I have to do this now,” she added, looking at him.
“You don’t… I don’t need you to. Or want you to,” he said, shrugging a little and looking around. He sighed and bit down on his lower lip. “Look… I never enjoyed this whole soulmate thing. I mean? Being stuck with someone? For the rest of your life? No, thanks. And my mom… Oh God, she drives me crazy. She sent me to Canada when I was little just because. She wants me… I mean, she wanted to me to find you more than anything,” Y/N listened with a confused expression, trying to understand where Brian was getting. Her mom never really pressured her into anything but she did get more… interested in her love life once Brian came into it. “And I told her several times… Soulmates sometimes don’t find each other. I mean, you could have been killed or something. But he always noticed when I flinched or anything so she always commented on it. It was annoying,” he stopped, took a deep breath and then continued. “Besides… We might not even get married. We might be best friends for life? Who the fuck knows. Yeah, you do like my petty songs and I do like how your hair changes colors all the time, but? In the long run?”
Y/N ended up giggling a bit, shaking her head. That caught Brian’s attention, making him look up at her and make a face. He was about to ask her what the hell was going on when she started talking.
“I don’t want to date you right away,” she started, giving him a smile. “I never planned to. I don’t know you, you don’t know me. You can’t even name my three favorite colors or what type of tea is acceptable to drink in the morning…” she started, reaching out to hold his hand for a moment. “I don’t mind if you need to get to know me first or whatever because I’d prefer to get to know you before we do anything stupid. Like getting married.”
He rolled his eyes, chuckling a little. “Maybe we should have had this talk a few months ago?”
“Oh, shut up. If they ask, we needed the time to be petty. I hope you wrote another petty song. I hope it’s more petty than the last one. I hope it has my name in it and you’re going to sing in front of a lot of people and all of them are going to know how horrible I am,” Y/N said, squeezing his hand before letting go, making the other laugh.
“Sorry. I actually wrote one… But it’s more in the lines of ‘god dammit I fucked this up what can I do now’, you know?” Brian said and Y/N pouted, making both of them laugh and shake their heads.
They spend another few minutes outside. No one yelled or broke anything and no neighbors were disturbed. They covered the basics: favorite color, favorite band, favorite TV show, hogwarts house and favorite star wars character, etc. They had a small fight over star wars vs star trek, but decided that one was better as a movie and the other was better as a TV series.
When they decided it was time, they took the elevator back to the sixth floor and knocked on Wonpil’s door.
They were all afraid Y/N and Brian had pushed each other from the terrace or worst, kissed. Alice had drank almost an entire bottle of wine and the boys were trying to focus on something else - a TV show. Something about famous parents and even more famous kids. The girl was the first one up when they knocked, running to get the door and open it with a smile.
Y/N and Brian walked in with a smile, waving at their friends. They were standing side by side, looking a bit awkward but not a bad awkward. More like ‘we talked because of you and now we have to explain how things are going’ awkward. It was going to take some time but they would figure this whole soulmate thing out eventually.
“So…” Y/N started. “Brian is my soulmate even though he likes beer over wine,” she made a face.
“Yeah, and uh… Y/N is my soulmate even though she prefers Jae over me sometimes,” he said while she shrugged, making finger guns towards Jae while all their friends laughed.
“Are you two finally okay?” Sungjin asked.
“Yeah, we are. We’re going to be,” Brian said and Y/N showed him the tongue. Soon they moved to find their places on the couch and their drinks, Y/N finally getting the wine she was promised earlier that week.
When Brian had to use the bathroom, they took the cake out of the fridge and surprised him with it. His birthday had been on Wednesday, but today seemed like a nice day to have Y/N be a part of the celebrations. That’s the reason they had set this up. Everything worked out as planned - the new soulmates weren’t being huge asses about each other anymore, the cake was delicious and Wonpil’s wine choice was actually quite impressive.
Later that year, Day6 would sign a record deal with that JYP guy and Brian would get to sing Congratulations live to a lot of great fans to hear just how bad of a person his soulmate is.

"Just the two of us?"
You and Younghyun sat side by side in your boss' office, news of an out-of-town conference reaching you. She'd just informed you that she'd like for you and Younghyun to go together to the conference and represent your company, and you were having mixed emotions. You and Younghyun got along so well. "Yes, I think you two could handle it just fine. Why, don't you think so, Y/N?" Your boss furrowed her brow, concerned.

"Younghyun? How about you?"

"Then it's settled. I'll have Brennan make the arrangements."
After a few polite pleasantries, you and Younghyun left her office and stepped out into the hallway.
"You ever been to Chicago?" Younghyun asked as you walked.
"Oh, um, no I haven't," you answered, trying to wrap your mind around the fact that you'd soon be in Chicago for two days alone with Younghyun.
"Hmm, nice city. I'll show you around," he said, then stepped into his office. "Have a good day, Y/N."
"Yeah, you too." You kept walking, as if in a daze, to your office just one door down from his.
You closed your office door behind you (something you rarely did), and plopped down in your chair, trying to comprehend the situation you were getting into. You automatically wondered what you would wear on the trip, in the way you would for a date. But, you reminded yourself, this was not a date. It was not even a vacation. And it was not a trip with Younghyun. It was business, and you needed to be professional. But, you couldn’t help the electricity that was running through your veins.

"We're coworkers, and it's just a business trip," you told your best friend, Hyerin, over the phone as you packed your things. You were telling her, but also trying to convince yourself.
"It's not just a business trip if you're hot for each other," she replied.
"We're not hot for each other!" You were glad she couldn't see how red your ears were getting when you said that.
"Well you're definitely hot for him, and I wouldn't doubt he feels the same with the things you've told me about him. A trip with just the two of you is bound to end in bed."
You became even more flustered at her words, but the alarm on your watch beeped, cutting your conversation short. "I have to go," you told her, zipping your suitcase closed.
"Okay, have fun and tell me all the dirty details when you get back!" Hyerin rushed before you could hang up.
"There's not going to be any, bye!" You pressed the end button and tossed your phone into your purse, then snatched it up, grabbed your keys, and headed out your front door.
Your friend's words rang in your head the whole trip to the airport, and you wondered if they would come true. You weren't completely sure if you wanted them to or not. You shook your head to try and sweep your mind clean as you retrieved your bags from the trunk of the cab. You thanked the driver and walked confidently through the sliding doors of the airport. You had decided to at least pretend to be confident and comfortable, and try your best to fake it till you made it.
Your plan worked; the whole time you were in the security line, the Starbucks line, walking through the crowds, you felt sure of yourself. And then you heard his voice call your name and all of that came to a screeching halt. You stumbled a bit in your heels from turning too quickly, grabbing the wall to stabilize yourself and cursing under your breath as you tried to hide the embarrassed redness that you were sure was now coloring your cheeks.
"Careful," he said, placing his hand on your shoulder when he reached you.
Oh fuck. That was the first time he'd touched you today and it was already sending your heart racing. This was gonna be a long trip.
You soon boarded the plane and ended up seated at a window with Younghyun right next to you. At least you could distract yourself with the view. Younghyun pulled out some papers to look over before the conference, but you always chose to not worry about work on flights. It was a time no one could expect work from you, so you took it. Younghyun on the other hand, wanted to be extra prepared. You waited for take off and watched as his fingers shuffled through the stack, not realizing you were staring until they stopped moving completely.
"Sure you don't want to review these?" Younghyun offered. As if that's what you were thinking of. You wished your thoughts were that pure.
"No, no, I've looked at them a hundred times," you answered with a wave of your hand, turning back to the window.
"A trip with just the two of you is bound to end in bed." Hyerin's words popped back into your head. You doubted she was right, but couldn't deny the part of you that hoped she was. You put in your earbuds and leaned against the window, doing your best to concentrate on the music until you landed, with some degree of success.
When you landed, you and Younghyun found your way out of the plane and airport and grabbed a taxi. But he went on far more business trips than you, and he'd also been to Chicago before and you hadn't, so you tried not to let it bother you. You enjoyed seeing the new city, all the towering buildings that surrounded you. You were used to being in cities like this, but each one was unique and had its own character, so it always interested you to visit a new one.
You turned back to the inside of the cab and saw Younghyun on his phone. "We're almost there," he informed you, typing away.

"Alright, here are the keys to your adjoining rooms." The concierge placed one key card in front of you and one in front of Younghyun, and you furrowed your brow at those last two words.
"Adjoining?"
"Yes, there is a door connecting them, so you can simply unlock it from both sides if you wish to move between the two rooms," she replied helpfully.
Younghyun looked at you, seemingly just as confused. You hadn't booked these rooms and neither had he, they were just given to you by your company, by your boss' assistant. Maybe Brennan was trying to send you a message...
"I'm sorry, is that a problem?"

"You can also keep them locked if you wish," she tacked on, trying to help.

You both went up to your respective rooms and dropped your stuff, changing into more comfortable clothes before heading out into the city.
You checked your phone; Hyerin had texted you.

Younghyun smirked at his glass and took a sip before answering your question. His expression made you pause, wondering if he knew something you didn't. "I...Yeah, I did hear that."
You practically snorted at that. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"No, nothing. Just, his office is next to mine, and...our building has thin walls, that's all." He cleared his throat and caught your eye, and you shared a knowing smirk. Apparently things were more heated in your office than you knew.
"Oh," you laughed, taking another sip of your drink, already finishing it off and ready for another. You wanted to get a little tipsy; you were hoping it would take the edge off and keep you from having your nervous little walls up around him. If you wanted to get anywhere with Younghyun, you'd have to have more confidence, and alcohol was one way to get you there.

Younghyun leaned forward, crossing his arms and resting his elbows on the table, the sleeves of his button-up now rolled up and hugging the crook of his arm. "Oh, I don't know. They're such different people...But, they certainly seem like they enjoy each other's company, so..." He raised his eyebrows and chuckled as he spun his glass a few times.
Well now you were curious. It sounded like this was a regular occurrence. "They really fuck while you're in the office?" You asked incredulously, lowering your voice a bit. Their offices were right by yours. You felt like you were living under a rock.
"Oh yeah, at like lunch and after meetings...You've never noticed?"

He placed his elbow on the small table and rested his head in his palm, watching you talk. Though you noticed his gaze, what you were a little too tipsy to notice was the endearment behind his eyes.
"I'm sure you will."
A pause hung in the air and you both looked down at your own glasses that were nearly empty. “Hello” you reply with a laugh, and with that short glimpse, you wake up
Wanting to keep the moment to yourself, you decide not to tell anyone about your soulmate
Your reasoning was, well, if you made the choice in this lifetime, you probably made the same one in the last life, so why the hell not?
With every passing week, you get more and more moments of places seeming too familiar though you’ve never been to them before
Passing by a bass guitar in music store with your friend, you can’t help but think that it would look better in the hands of your soulmate
(With a pretty voice like you had heard in your dreams, it wouldn’t be far off to imagine him as a musician)
In a heat-of-the-moment decision, you bought an acoustic guitar and looked online as to where to find lessons

“We could be a two person band,” you joked, poking your soulmate’s crossed leg with your foot, a familiar looking acoustic guitar nestled in your lap and your fingers resting comfortably on its neck. His outline was less blurred, and moreso like you were looking at him through rippling water; he was sat across from you, head tipped back on the edge of the couch seats that you had both chosen the floor over, and a bass guitar in his hands.
“Do you want to be backup or main vocals?” He answered, in which you replied with a dramatic strum, leaning back and sticking your leg up in the air, “I’ll be both”
Once again, your dream faded out to the wonderful sound of his laugh.
Sadly, even though your dream made you pay some money for vocal lessons, you learned that singing wasn’t for you.
(Maybe he had laughed at you in the dream because he knew that you singing was a disaster)
With each passing dream, and every moment of “whoa that reminds me of my soulmate” you slowly get a firmer and firmer grasp on who he is as a person, and you start putting together why you were destined to fall in love with him every lifetime.
He had the prettiest laugh, and a gorgeous smile to match. He liked taking naps just as much as you did, and he had the exact same struggle waking up. And though he was so similar to you, the contrasts in his personality clicked with you almost perfectly.
Unlike most people, you were blessed by being able to move on to a different lifetime in your dreams without having to watch something painful.
Many people around you had described watching their soulmates die, or hearing a knock at the door only to see the downcast faces of soldiers holding a box that could only mean one, horrible, horrible thing.
But, your memory jumped forward
Another, “Hi,” “Hello” and a knowing smile at an all too familiar greeting
And then, one day, you had woken up after an incredible, crystal clear dream. After years of outlines faded around the edges and imagines that only got more blurred the harder you looked, you finally saw him.
And dear god, you were floored
You had never been one to get self conscious when it came to your soulmate; you always found comfort that he had fallen for you in every lifetime as well, but now…
Lets just say you spent a long time on your makeup that morning before heading out the door to work, knowing the clarity of that dream must have meant something.
With your guitar case slung over your shoulder and a nervous hunch to your shoulders, you walked to the music store just down the street. You tugged at your hair, mussed it with your hands, brushed it behind an ear before running your fingers through it again. You pulled up the camera on your phone and checked your makeup; you looked in store windows at your reflection to see if your outfit was unflattering.

You paced back and forth in your living room. You looked at the clock. It’s almost time. Your heart beat faster and faster, palms getting sweaty and cold. You bit your nails a couple of times and paced back and forth again.
“Girl, if you don’t chill down, I don’t know what to do with you.” Tracy watched you. “Who knows? Maybe he didn’t read it?”
“But what if he did?” You sat beside her.
“What if he had your planner but didn’t do anything about it? What if he just said to himself that that planner belongs to you because he recognized it and set it aside?” Tracy sighed. “Breathe in and breathe out.”
You breathed in and breathed out. It calmed you down a bit but your heart began racing again when your phone rang. You grabbed it and looked at the screen. “Shit. It’s him. They landed.” You looked at Tracy. “Please?”
“Okay.. okay.” She grabbed the phone and answered it.
“Hello? Oh, hi Brian! Y/n?” She looked at you. You motioned that you were sleeping. “Oh… she’s… what? Really? Oh… oh okay… okay.. gotcha… sure! I’ll tell her. No worries! Okay, bye!”
As soon as she hang up the phone you asked her what he said.
“He said they landed and he’s coming here right now.”

“I think he didn’t.”

“He said that he wanted to introduce the girl he loves to you… like.. asap…” Tracy was just as confused as you are.

Words can’t describe what you feel right now. But one thing’s for sure, you don’t like this feeling. This is far more nerve-wrecking than going to that roller coaster ride that you were afraid of. Far more horrifying than going to that haunted house where you were terrified of. Far more heartbreaking than any of the dramas you watched that ended sadly. But what can you do? This is something that you are not in control of.
You waited for several hours when you heard a knock on the door. “Great. Just when Tracy went to work. Perfect timing. I am so lucky.” You opened the door. “Hi.” You smiled weakly.
Brian smiled. “Hello.” He was holding your planner.
“Oh! You have my planner.” He handed it to you. “Thanks.” You were debating whether to ask him if a letter dropped or pretend as if you’re not hiding your deepest secret inside the planner.
He went inside the apartment. But you wondered why he was by himself. Maybe she was late? Who is she anyway..
“Did Tracy tell you abo-”
“Yeah. Where is she?”
Brian guided you in front of a mirror. He’s acting weird, you thought. He was smiling. “Who do you see in the mirror?”

A/N: Chelle ( @prettywordsyouleft ) and I wanted to re-visit our magical world of Mistletoe Manor. The series left off on a bit of a cliffhanger, so we really had no choice! We hope you enjoy this extra look into the lives of Cassie, Evie, Joey, and all their friends and family.

Since the wedding was fast approaching, Evie found she could barely walk through the manor without being accosted by someone to discuss details. Whether it was her mother bringing up flowers, the cook bringing up menu items, Lydia bringing up her dress and hairstyle... truly, not an hour went by in which she didn’t answer questions or make decisions about her wedding.
It was quite exhausting.
Which is why, as she arrived back home after her visit with Joey, she crept in as quietly and discreetly as she could. There was one person, and one person only, she wanted to run into right now.
And she had a feeling she knew where he was...
After inching the door closed behind her so as not to make any noise whatsoever, Evie tiptoed toward the library, making sure to stay on the carpet and avoid the creaky floorboards.
A flash of white caught the corner of her eye, most likely the cook’s apron, so Evie dashed behind an open door to hide from view.
“Daniel,” she heard the cook ask the footman by the front door. “Has Miss Evie returned yet? I want her to taste the cake I’m testing out for the wedding.”
Evie held her breath, knowing Daniel had just seen her sneak in. He also had to have seen her scurry behind the door, so it was only a matter of seconds before her cover was blown.
But, to her joyful surprise, Daniel replied with, “No, ma’am, I haven’t seen her.”
As the cook let out a somewhat annoyed sigh, Evie truly had to hold herself back from exclaiming with relief. And also squealing.
As soon as she heard the retreating footsteps of the cook, Evie poked her head out from behind the door. Daniel was watching the cook leave, and once she’d turned the corner, he swung his head around to make eye contact with Evie.
Evie mouthed a ‘thank you’, and Daniel simply nodded with a tiny grin on his lips.
She stepped back out into the hallway, staying on her toes as she hopped quickly to the library.
Without even looking inside to make sure Yongguk really was in there, Evie hurried past the door and hastily shut it behind her. She turned, leaning back against the solid oak and exhaling deeply.
“Evie,” a deep (and very familiar) voice said, startling her just enough to make her jump. “Are you all right?”
Evie hopped to attention, straightening up and searching the room until her eyes landed on her fiance sitting in one of the armchairs.
“Oh!” she breathed. “Yes -- Yes, I am fine, I just -- I was trying to avoid... It doesn’t matter. I was looking for you.”
Yongguk’s forehead wrinkled just slightly, and he set the book currently in his hands down on the side table next to him.
“Well, you have found me,” he murmured as he stood up. “What do you need?”
Before he could make his way over to her, she made her way over to him. He reached his hands out for her, and she slipped her fingers into his palms with a soft grin.
“I just... I do need to talk to you about something, but right now, I am just... happy to see you.”
Evie had been quite anxiety-ridden on her walk back from the village, but one look at Yongguk’s incredibly handsome face had calmed her down instantly. How could she have been so nervous? Even though she’d only known Yongguk for a few months, she knew he would be by her side -- physically and emotionally. Literally and figuratively.
A smile broke out onto his lips, and Evie’s heart jumped into her throat at the sight of it. He had the most wonderful smile she’d ever seen in her entire life.
“I’m happy to see you, too,” he replied as he squeezed her fingers. He then brought one of her hands up to his lips and placed a very soft, delicate kiss on her knuckles. “What have you been up to this afternoon?”
“Ah... yes,” Evie said quietly. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. Sort of.”
Yongguk’s brow furrowed again, and he led her over to a nearby loveseat. He didn’t let go of her hands; in fact, he only held them tighter.
“I... Well, you see,” Evie began, perched on the edge of the cushion and avoiding eye contact. “I went to speak with Joey -- Well, first, I spoke with Cassie who told me to also talk to Joey, and that’s where I just came from. Her cottage in the village.”
Yongguk simply nodded.
“I... Please, do not take any offense to this whatsoever. I am just... a bit... nervous about starting our new life together.”
Almost instantly, Yongguk scooted closer to her. “Of course, you are. It’s going to be an incredibly enormous change for you. I would be surprised if you weren’t nervous.”
Even just hearing him say that made her feel a bit better.
“Joey suggested I talk to you, so... here I am,” she said with a meek chuckle.
“Good,” he murmured, keeping his voice low so only she could hear -- even though they were the only ones in the closed-off room. “I would like -- I wish for you to feel comfortable enough to talk to me about... anything. I know you’ll be leaving your family behind, and you’ll only have me -- at least, until you get to know your new ladies’ maid and the other staff and people from the village. I don’t want you to feel... stifled. Or lonely.”
Evie couldn’t help but grin, and she slipped her hands free from his so she could lean into him, sliding her arms around his middle and fitting her head into the crook of his neck.
She heard a deep, quiet chuckle vibrate in his chest, and then she felt the warmth of his arms as he returned her embrace.
“I won’t be lonely,” she assured him with a small shake of her head. “Though... I will bring at least one trunk-load of books with me, just in case.”
Yongguk’s chuckle turned into a more hearty laugh at that, and the sound of it filled Evie’s heart and lungs with pure joy.
“I wouldn’t dream of keeping you away from your books, my love,” he answered. “I will make as much room as you need for them. We can sanction a room to be your own personal library if you’d like.”
Evie gasped, lifting her head to look him in the eye. “Are you quite serious?” Her own personal library?!
Yongguk nodded, brows raised as he gazed her with an extremely serious expression. “Of course.”
And now Evie wondered why she’d ever been nervous in the first place.
She let out a soft squeal of excitement before practically throwing herself at him, pressing her smiling lips to his and kissing him over and over.
“Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she mumbled.
And now Yongguk wondered why he hadn’t brought up the idea of a personal library much, much earlier.
Ever since Evie had closed the front door behind her, the wheels in Joey’s head had been turning.
Not about Evie’s predicament, though. She was incredibly confident her advice was just what her older sister had needed to hear, so she was no longer worried about that.
No, Joey was thinking about the other topic they had discussed.
The orphanage.
Admittedly, Joey had been trying desperately to fill her time with activities around the house, and... it hadn’t been working. When Evie suggested volunteering at the local orphanage, Joey had thought it was a good idea almost immediately.
But, the more she pondered... the more she knew it was an excellent idea.
And, by the time Brian arrived home after the school day ended, Joey practically pounced on him.
“I’ve got extremely exciting news!” she cried, her eyes wide and sparkling vivaciously.
“I do, too!” Brian replied. “I’m home!”
Joey immediately paused, her mouth still open as she had just been about to tell him her exciting news.
She stayed frozen for a few moments before replying to him. “...Well, yes. That is very exciting. I missed you terribly, and I’m glad you’re home.”
Brian beamed with pride as he set his briefcase down and loosened his tie. “I missed you, too, my darling.”
He leaned in for a kiss then, but Joey flung her arms out to stop him. “Wait!” she cried. “I need to tell you my exciting news!”
Brian chuckled softly, still leaning in for his kiss before saying, “All right, let’s hear it. What’s your exciting news?”
Joey didn’t even start leading him into the living room so they could have a nice cup of tea before supper. She couldn’t wait any longer, so she came out with it immediately.
“Evie came to see me, and when she saw I had stooped to embroidery to fill my time -- it’s very well-known I am quite awful with a needle -- she suggested I start volunteering at the orphanage, and I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I’m going to go there tomorrow to see how I can help!”
Brian’s head jerked back in surprise, and a look of slight confusion came across his features. “Volunteer at the orphanage?”
“Yes! Don’t you think it’s perfect? I’m sure they need loads of help, and I’ve got loads of time and loads of energy.”
“Well, that is true.”
“See?! So, I’m going there tomorrow, and I will tell you all about it when you get home.”
A soft smile tugged at Brian’s lips, and he leaned in to place a kiss on Joey’s forehead. “I can’t wait,” he replied.
“Me neither,” Joey agreed with almost a squeal in her voice. “Now. You tell me all about your day.”
The couple spent the rest of the evening in their typical way: discussing the events of the day over dinner, engaging in more conversation over tea and biscuits in the living room, and then talking even more as they readied for bed.
With two people as talkative as they, it’s not a wonder they spent nearly all their time together in conversation.
Joey was the first to awake the next morning, and quite surprisingly, she got out of bed and began to get ready almost immediately. As active a person as she was, Joey was rather lazy -- but only in the mornings. She tended to stay in bed until she knew the cook would absolutely get cross with her for leaving breakfast out too long.
But this morning, she was too excited for her first day of volunteering.
Brian, of course, remarked upon it and began teasing her as soon as he arose -- though, Joey wouldn’t have expected anything less. His provoking nature had been what attracted her to him in the first place, after all.
They followed their typical morning routine of eating breakfast together, and Joey saw Brian off with a kiss at the front door, as she usually did.
But then, when she could no longer see him from the stoop, she went inside and retrieved her coat. She slid it on, letting out a somewhat shaky, anxious breath... and then she left.
The orphanage wasn’t extremely far; close enough to walk, though not quite close enough to be able to walk when it was raining. Thankfully, the sun was already low in the sky, shining warmly.
She greeted her fellow villagers as she passed them in the street, smiling and inquiring after their families. It hadn’t taken her too long to realize she actually preferred living in the village rather than back at the manor, away from the hustle and bustle of country town life.
Or maybe she simply preferred being married and living with Brian than she did living with her family.
Either way, the sense of contentment and happiness Joey felt these days was immense.
When she arrived at the orphanage not twenty minutes later, Joey let out another nervous exhale before reaching up and twisting the large, brass doorknob.
The nun sitting in the front office rose immediately, her eyebrows raising in surprise. “My lady,” she greeted. And then she stopped abruptly, obviously remembering her manners and dipping into a low curtsy.
“Oh, please, just Joey is fine,” Joey told her with a chuckle. “Or Josephine, if you prefer. I married a valet who is now a teacher, I hardly think the ‘Lady’ is applicable.”
And that is exactly how she liked it.
The nun stood up straight, a meek smile tugging at the corners of her lips. “Josephine,” she amended, though it sounded like it took a great deal of effort to do so. “What can I help you with?”
“First of all,” Joey began. “What is your name?”
“Oh! I am Sister Agnes, my la -- Josephine.”
“Sister Agnes! It is a pleasure to meet you. Now, I do not need any help from you -- I would like to know if you need any help from me. I would like to volunteer my time!”
Sister Agnes’ eyes widened. “Y--you would like to... v--volunteer? Here?” she stammered.
“Yes, indeed! Please, give me first my task. I am quite eager to do whatever needs doing.”
Sister Agnes explained she would fetch Sister Daphne, the head nun of the orphanage, so to speak. Sister Agnes dealt more with the administration side and, so, did not feel she had the authority to assign Joey to any sort of job.
When Sister Daphne appeared a few minutes later, she took Joey back into the orphanage, giving her a tour and explaining their daily schedule.
The tour ended in the girls’ bedroom, a large room on the second floor with more than several beds lining the walls. Sister Daphne explained there was not enough time and not enough hands to help the girls thoroughly groom themselves, so Joey’s first task would be helping some of the girls brush their hair and teaching them how to brush their teeth and wash their hands.
Joey nodded, a beaming smile curving on her lips because that sounded incredibly easy! She’d been watching her ladies’ maid brush her hair all her life, and she certainly brushed her teeth and washed her hands every day.
As soon as Sister Daphne left the room, about five of the girls came rushing up to Joey’s side, clinging to her skirts and all asking her questions at the same time.
...Oh, dear. What had she gotten herself into?
Brian was incredibly surprised to open the front door to an empty entryway. He had been expecting a greeting much like yesterday’s: Joey standing there waiting for him, blurting out excitedly before he even had a chance to close the door behind him.
But she wasn’t there.
“Joey?” he called out as he set his briefcase down by the small coat closet.
“I... I’m in the living room!” her slightly hesitant voice replied from down the hallway. “Come in and have some tea, my love.”
Brian furrowed his brow as he headed toward the living room, growing increasingly worried at Joey’s behavior. She was very rarely hesitant, and she told him often how greeting him at the door was one of the best parts of her day.
What exactly was going on?
As soon as he arrived in the doorway, Joey turned in her chair to face him, a soft grin on her lips.
“Welcome home,” she said gently.
...A soft grin? Gently?
Was Joey... all right?
“Thanks...” Brian replied cautiously. He stepped inside the room and slid into the chair next to her. He watched her carefully as she poured him a cup of tea, murmuring his thanks when she handed it to him.
“How was your day?” she asked with slightly raised eyebrows.
“It was fine,” he answered. “What about yours? How was the orphanage?”
He was incredibly confused as to why she hadn’t immediately told him all about it when he’d opened the front door.
“Oh, it was lovely,” Joey told him. “I met Sister Agnes and Sister Daphne, I got a tour of the place, I helped some of the girls learn how to properly wash their hands and brush their teeth. I even got to brush their hair for them. They were quite delightful.”
Brian opened his mouth to ask her if things had really been lovely because -- well, why wasn’t she gushing and being overly dramatic about everything? This certainly wasn’t the Joey he knew.
But then she let out a frustrated huff and set down her teacup.
“Oh, all right!” she exclaimed. “I can’t keep it in any longer!”
Aha. Here we go!
“I formed a bond with one of the girls, in particular -- Daisy. She’s six-years-old, and her parents both died of influenza two years ago, and she has the most beautiful ginger hair -- but that’s not exactly the point, I just spent a lot of time getting all of the knots out, and it was enormously pretty once I did. But, anyway! There’s just something about her -- something in her eyes, maybe. I don’t know! But I know every time I look at her, my heart aches and the pit in the bottom of my stomach gets larger, and I truly almost cried when I left today, and I think we should adopt her.”
Thankfully, Brian had not been drinking his tea when she’d said this. If he had, he surely would have choked. He was holding his teacup, though, so he set it down as quickly and carefully as possible.
“Excuse me?” he chuckled. “You think we should -- what?”
“I know you’ll feel the same as soon as you meet her, Brian,” Joey assured him passionately, reaching her hands out and grasping his fingers. “And I know it sounds ridiculous, but that’s what we are! We’re ridiculous! We hated each other, and then we decided to run away and get married in the span of about ten minutes! But we work! And Daisy -- I can just feel it. She belongs to us. She needs to belong to us.”
Brian still couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing. Joey, after spending literally one day volunteering at the orphanage, wanted to adopt a six-year-old girl?!
Joey obviously interpreted the confusion and shock on his face because she kept on talking, not allowing him a chance to say anything.
“She reminds me so much of myself when I was that age. She talks a mile a minute -- sometimes she even gets so off-topic she forgot how her sentence started, so she backtracks but then gets off-topic again. She adores running around outside, she speaks before she thinks, she’s impulsive --”
“All right,” Brian interrupted, snapping his head to look Joey in the eye.
“Wh-- really?!” Joey breathed. “All right?! All right as in ‘yes’?!”
Brian gazed into his wife’s eyes for a few moments before a smile tugged at one corner of his lips. And then he nodded.
“Yes.”
Joey launched herself at him, landing in his lap and throwing her arms around his neck. “Oh, Brian, you are simply the best -- do you know how much I love you?!”
“Yes,” he chuckled as she peppered his face with kisses.
“I thought I would have to spend days convincing you!” she giggled after kissing his nose but before kissing his eyelid.
“All you had to do was say she reminded you of yourself,” he told her, his voice quiet and filled with adoration.
Joey stopped kissing him, pulling back slightly to look at him.
“That’s all I needed to know. If she’s anything at all like you, then you’re right. She belongs with us. We’ll go there tomorrow -- together.”
Joey’s eyes became glossy, filling with tears of joy before she leaned back in and kissed him. She kissed him softly but urgently, whispering against his lips how very dearly, truly, and deeply she loved him.
Brian felt exactly the same way, of course, and that’s why he trusted her. He trusted her implicitly and unconditionally. Even if she hadn’t said little Daisy reminded her of herself, he would’ve agreed to it. Because if Joey said the little girl belonged with them, then it was true.
And, in the back of his head, he knew he had to make the most of tonight. Because tonight was the last night ever -- the last night for the rest of their lives that they would be a family of two.
“Did you hear about Brian and Lady Josephine?” Lydia asked as soon as she stepped in the garage.
Seo Joon looked up, ceasing his arm momentarily. He was currently cleaning and waxing the car, preparing it for Evie’s transport to the church in a few hours.
“What about them?” he asked.
Lydia hurried over to him, and before she continued, she rose onto her toes and greeted him with a kiss.
“I can’t stay very long,” she whispered. “I’ve got to help Lady Evie get ready. But I’ve only just heard the news, and I wanted to tell you before anyone else did.”
“What news? What’s going on?”
Lydia smirked, and Seo Joon’s heart skipped a beat at how breathtakingly attractive she was.
“Well, Lady Josephine started volunteering at the orphanage a couple of days ago, upon Lady Evie’s suggestion... and now she and Brian have adopted a child!”
Seo Joon’s eyes widened immediately. “What?!”
“A six-year-old girl named Daisy!” Lydia giggled, nodding vigorously. “Can you believe it?!”
Seo Joon was about to answer that no, he could not believe it...
But he stopped himself.
Because this was Lady Josephine they were talking about.
“Actually... I can,” he said.
Lydia simply giggled again before saying, “I know, me too.”
A smile curved Seo Joon’s lips, and he leaned down to kiss her again. Just because.
“I must go back to Lady Evie,” she whispered. “And you must get the car looking absolutely gleaming for when you drive her to the church.”
“That I do,” Seo Joon murmured. But he kissed her once more for good measure before she scurried out of the garage and back into the house.
Evie was up in her bedroom waiting for Lydia, after all, her wedding dress hanging up and all of her jewel-encrusted pins laid out on her vanity. She was waiting to be transformed into a bride.

Stray puppy
Kang Younghyun x g/n reader

Author note: finally done with this! The writing is probably bad since English isn't my 1st language but I hope it's cute. Also this is my first fanfic where I'm writing y/n as a 2nd person instead of 3rd person, so feedback about my writing would be appreciated.

Younghyun thanked the barista for his iced Americano before paying and left the counter heading towards the door. He took a few sips as the cold breeze hit his face while walking to the JYP building. Winter was coming and he was embracing the change. Just as he was about to pass the alleyway in his route he heard a voice. Someone was baby-talking and cooing. He scrunched up his face hearing some of the things being said before smiling.
"Aww look at you, I knew you were hungry-wungry, sorry I came a bit late. That old lady at the cafe was extra cranky at me today for messing up the coffee orders earlier, but it's okay. As long as you have some food in your tummy it's alright."
He turned to inspect the alley and found you in the apron of the cafe he just visited, kneeling down on the ground next to a roughened up pup, happily wagging her tail while eating what seemed to be some leftovers from the cafe. Younghyun walked closer, his footsteps prompted you to look up, wide eyed at recognition. He knows you, you were the cute barista he had seen working at the cafe and you took his orders a couple of times.
“Oh, hi there” you said timidly as you rose to your feet, staring at Younghyun a bit stunned to see him there. The truth is, you have always had a crush on Younghyun from afar, and even took his orders to know his name. “Hello uhm Y/N” Younghyun greeted you awkwardly as he glanced at your name tag. "Yeah that's me" you replied, fidgeting with your hands not knowing what to do next. "Younghyun, right?" You asked to fill the awkward silence and he nodded with a smile as confirmation.
The puppy, noticing Younghyun, ran up to him wagging her tail, barking up at him and jumping around for attention. "Well hello there little guy" he cooed and kneeled down to the ground, placing his coffee cup next to him as he reached out to pet the pup. You were still standing as you were, looking at the pair a bit too fondly for having just met properly. Younghyun looked up at you, “Do you take care of him often?” he asked, tilting his head looking at you. “Well it’s a she, and yeah at least once a day after my shift at the cafe.” you stated as casually as you could as you kept fidgeting. Younghyun nodded thoughtfully and picked up the puppy in his hands, the pup seemed surprisingly clm with the situation. “Wouldn’t it be better to take her in as your own dog? I mean by the looks of it the pup is an orphan and the streets are pretty dangerous for her.” he asked while he looked at her, he got up on his feet and looked at you. Your shoulders slumped at that thought. Heck, even you knew that, but living in a rented studio with a shitty landlord, even imagining taking care of a pet on low wage was difficult. “As much as I’d like to do that though, my landlord is kind of a douche when it comes to pets, also I don’t think I can afford to keep one full time”.
Younghyun frowned at the thought of that, but suddenly came up with an idea. “What if I adopt her? That way she can be safe and get some proper care she needed” he spoke excitedly and that had you dumbfounded. It did make you happy that he would offer that, but also sad that you would not see the puppy again. Younghyun noticed your silence and added, “you can come over at my place to visit sometimes”. Now this really shocked you “What??” you spoke up with a higher pitch in your voice, to which Younghyun raised the puppy in between you two and said “The puppy, you can come over to visit the puppy”. The puppy barked as if in agreement. “Oh, that, yeah that sounds great” you said with an awkward chuckle. “Great, is it okay if we exchanged numbers for this? Only if you’re comfortable” he asked, shifting the puppy into his other hand to retrieve his phone. "Uh yeah sure I guess" you hesitated a bit but gave in considering this is the best excuse you will ever get to get his number.
"Well, I'll see you around Y/N" he said, raising the puppy like a toast and picking his cup up from the ground. "I'll see you too, Younghyun." you spoke as you lightly waved your hand as he left. Younghyun changed his route and headed towards the dorm to drop off the pup with his bandmates, and a smile grew on his face thinking about you.
