I'm half-way through You, Me and Him and oh my god this movie is so strange
And what is going on with the cast???? Obviously we've got David Tennant, but we've also got Nina Sosanya (of casanova, doctor who, good omens, staged, etc), Sarah Parish (of Broadchurch and Blackpool), Georgia Tennant herself and Will from the inbetweeners??????
We just need Laura Fraser and a picture of Michael Sheen in the background and we're all set. Maybe SOCO Brian can be a nurse too

Regale You With A Gourd-geous Tale
Tumblr media
Alec Hardy x GN!Reader
Summary: You and Alec partake in the annual Broadchurch Pumpkin Carving Contest, but things go rather sideways.
Soundtrack: Pumpkin Cowboy by Brian David Gilbert
Requests: Open!
Warnings: Alec is not a basic white girl.
You had thought that convincing the Broadchurch DI to enter the annual Pumpkin Carving Contest would be fun, help him integrate into the community better, and meet people in a context that did not involve crime.
You had been wrong.
Sure, the actual contest had gone swimmingly up to a point. You didn't win, but it was fun. Until it wasn't.
First, one of the local pub owners had gotten too drunk and caused a scene. Then, one of the village kids had gone missing (he was found an hour later eating a candy apple as if nothing had happened). Then, someone had injured themselves with the carving tools (how? you were unsure).
Overall, it was just hard to really focus on the activity at hand.
Also, your pumpkins sucked.
You blamed the multiple distractions.
You did get a consolation prize of a free drink ticket, which you used for a pint of Guinness, so at least there was that.
"I'm sorry," Alec said as you walked home. "I know you really wanted me to be normal today."
You sighed. "It's not your fault." He had his arm around your shoulder, making it easy to lightly bump against him as you walked. "I know it's hard for you to shut work off... especially when it just keeps coming at you like that."
"It really did," he groused, rubbing at his eyes with his free hand. "Just one thing after another, all day."
The two of you walked in silence for a stretch after that, until Alec brought you to a halt outside a coffee shop. "Would you like something?" he asked, tossing his head towards the cafe. "Something to make up for today."
"You don't have to do that," you said, smiling. "But, sure. Large pumpkin spice latte, please."
"Y'ken," he said as he parted from you, "I've never had a pumpkin spice latte."
He did not give you the opportunity to respond. He was gone in an instant, stepping inside to order your drinks. You waited outside for him to come back, your stunned expression never leaving you.
He eventually returned, handing you your drink. It took him a minute to notice your shocked look.
"What is it?" he asked, and you could tell he was totally oblivious.
"You've never had a pumpkin spice latte?" you finally asked.
"... No," he answered unsurely, blinking. "Should I've?"
"Well... I mean... probably? Maybe? It's just that, like, everyone's had at least one by now."
"Except me."
"See, that's where you're wrong, because I have a pumpkin spice latte right here, and you're going to try it." You plucked his coffee out of his hand, replacing it with your latte.
He stared dumbfounded at it for a moment.
"You're supposed to drink it," you said in amusement, watching him. "It won't bite, Alec."
Hesitantly, he took a sip. The expression he made afterward was not entirely pleased, but it wasn't completely disgusted. In terms of Alec's reactions, that wasn't a terrible sign.
He handed the latte back to you and took his own coffee back in one swift move, then took a palette-cleansing sip of his drink. "I never want to taste that again," he said, motioning to your latte.
"Oh, come on, it's not that bad!"
"Is this because we lost the pumpkin carving contest? Are you punishing me?" he asked jokingly, turning to look at you. "I did say I was sorry."
"It's not that!" you whined, shoving at his shoulder playfully. You were met with a chuckle. "Do you really not like it?"
"It's... fine," he answered honestly. "I'm not gonna go orderin' it but it's not the worst thing I've ever had, either."
Well, for Alec, that was a win.
"I'll get you," you said jovially with a smirk. "One of these days, you'll like pumpkin spice."
What he couldn't bear to tell you, was that he'd hated it. Could not stand the taste of it. And the idea of having to ever have that terrible flavor anywhere near his mouth ever again terrified him.
But, the idea of "converting" him made you happy, so he played along, hoping for his own sake that he did end up liking the stuff through sheer force of will.
And, he still felt bad about the pumpkin carving contest. While you were still asleep in the early hours of the morning, he snuck out of bed and ran to the shops, picking up two pumpkins and a carving kit for the two of you to enjoy alone at home.
When you woke up and saw his gift, not only were you pleased as punch, but you insisted on carving them right away.
The previous day had had some bad spots, but that day was perfect.

rewatching s1 of broadchurch even tho im halfway through my first watch of s3 because i have an obsession with rewatching things and DAMN there are way more hints at who ended up being the killer than i originally thought, and a bunch of moments that are really ironic in hindsight
spoilers under the cut (yes it came out like 10 years ago but im still putting a spoiler warning)
ep1 - joe and ellie talk in the kitchen after hardy makes the statement to the media
joe: do you know what happened? i mean should we be worried for other kids?
on first watch, his tone of voice and body language here just seem like confused and worried parent, but on second, there's definitely a hint of panic in his voice
ep2 - joe, tom and fred in the cafe
joe: this is a terrible, unspeakable thing thats happened. but nothing like it will ever happen again here
tom: you cant know that though can you? you cant be sure
then after this joe's facial expression looks SO guilty like he can't think how to respond
ep3 - hardy questioning tom with joe in the room
hardy: can you think of anyone who would want to hurt danny?
THEN THE CAMERA IMMEDIATELY CUTS TO JOE. ik near the end joe swears he never wanted to hurt him but this is still a rly clever piece of editing, i love when shows do this. also the fact that in every scene where he's questioning tom, joe's in the room and occasionally talks but he's never in the frame of the camera hardys using to record it. he was literally right under their noses the entire time and they never suspected because they were focused on other people too much
ep4 hardy goes to the millers" for dinner
this scene hits so much different on second viewing holy shit. at one point they're talking about marriage and work and how hardy's divorce was partially work-related and:
hardy: this job, it does it to you
ellie: well, not to us
ellie actually makes me sob she loves her life so much then it all just comes crashing down on her
joe: do you think you're gonna solve this case?
hardy: certain.
joe: good :)
joe's reply itself here makes sense but there's a few seconds before he says it where his face is just blank and mildly panicked. he's genuinely worrying about being caught at this point.
now this one isn't a direct hint or anything but just if you think about the dialogue in a different context...yeah it fits
hardy: you bloody liar
joe: ive said nothing
hardy: and yet-
joe said nothing to the police or ellie and yet was lying the WHOLE time.
ep5 - brian asks ellie out
ellie: sorry, im married
brian: and thats an issue is it?
ellie: happily married, brian
brian: oh. okay, fair enough. only lots of people aren't though, are they?
ellie: i am.
THE IRONY OH ELLIE LET ME GIVE YOU A HUG PLEASE
ep6 - jack's wake
ellie spends the whole scene looking around to see if anyone looks worried, at one point she looks into a room (seemingly at nige but joe is stood nearby having a different conversation) and she makes eye contact with joe RIGHT as the camera cuts away
ep 6 - joe takes tom to the skate park and ellie arrives
ellie: i was just looking round that bar at the wake thinking "its someone here, why cant i see it?" the longer this goes on, im starting to suspect everyone
joe: when you say everyone...
ellie: well, nearly everyone
this is probably the most obvious hint that i can't believe i didn't catch on to. of COURSE they're gonna make a point for the killer to be the ONE person ellie LITERALLY SAYS she isn't suspicious of.
ep7 - ellie lets susan leave the police station
ellie (about susan's past with her husband and daughters): in your own house, how could you not know?
just ow. the irony of it all. fucking ow.

Broadchurch: The Next Chapter
Chapter 17 - The After Work Drinks
It was a typical Friday evening at the local pub, and the cozy, dimly lit space was buzzing with chatter from various groups. Alec was leaning awkwardly against the bar, glancing around the room as his colleagues from the Broadchurch Police Department filtered in. Anna stood beside him, a warm smile on her face, effortlessly socializing with everyone. Alec had been reluctant to come - he was never one for after-work drinks - but Anna had convinced him, saying it would be fun to relax a little and celebrate with his team.
As they ordered their drinks, several of Alec’s colleagues began gathering around them, their expressions a mix of genuine congratulations and barely-contained amusement. Brian Young, part of the Broadchurch SOCO team, was the first to pipe up, his grin wide as he raised her glass.
“So, the notorious Alec Hardy is getting married!” He announced loudly, drawing the attention of everyone within earshot. “Never thought I’d see the day. God help his beautiful bride-to-be!”
A chorus of laughter erupted around the group, and Alec, despite himself, smirked and shook his head.
“Cheers, mate,” one of the younger officers chimed in, raising his pint. “Didn’t know you had it in you!”
Alec rolled his eyes but raised his glass in return.
The toasts continued, including a heartfelt one from Bob Daniels who’d grown to see Anna as a daughter figure. “You’d better look after her, Hardy, or else you’ll have me to deal with!” He’d threatened at the end of his speech, much to the delight of the other officers.
Before long, someone had mentioned Alec’s infamous reputation at work. “Sir, you know, we’ve always had that nickname for you,” a veteran officer teased, a twinkle of mischief in his eye. Alec furrowed his brow at the thought of being know as ‘Shitface’ behind his back when he first started. Although upon reflection he could understand how it had caught on.
“Well, we’ve agreed it’s time to let that one go.”
Alec raised an eyebrow. “Right,” he replied. “Well, just as long all you all don’t think I’ve gone soft.”
“What was the nickname?” Anna interjected curiously.
The police officers suddenly went quiet.
“Go on then. Tell her.” Said Alec.
He knew they’d struggle to say it out loud in front of Anna, worried they’d offend her. He took a sip from his pint knowing he was making them uncomfortable, just a little bit.
“Well,” Ellie started, knowing she should be the one to tell her. “When Alec first started he was always scowling, yelling, no-nonsense, didn’t suffer fools lightly,” she paused to look at Alec then at Anna. “To be honest Anna, Alec was a real wanker when he first started.” The other police officers murmured agreement and laughter. “But,” Ellie continued, lulling the others back to silence, “It was always for the right reason. Always to get the best possible work out of us and most importantly to find truth and justice for others.”
“Here, here!” The others cheered in agreement.
“He’d earned the nickname Shitface when he first started, but now it’s merely a term of endearment. Congratulations on your engagement you too. You both deserve it!” Ellie finished, raising her glass in the air to signal a cheers from the others before they all went back to their own conversations.
Anna chuckled beside him, gently squeezing his arm. “Not as bad as I’d imagined to be honest.”
Alec gave her a wry look but couldn’t help the small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “Yeah, well, could’ve been worse, I suppose.”
The teasing was good-natured, and after a few more rounds, some of the officers came up to Anna privately, offering their congratulations. A few of them, ones who had worked with Alec the longest, expressed their gratitude - not just for the engagement, but for the changes they’d noticed in him over the past year.
“Whatever you’ve done,” one of them said with a smile, “it’s working. We’ve seen him be… well, kinder. Less stressed. He even leaves work on time now. Which means we can also leave work on time, too!”
Anna smiled warmly, glancing over at Alec, who was deep in conversation with Ellie. “I can’t take all the credit. He’s always had it in him - he just needed a little nudge.”
They shared a laugh, and soon after, the gathering began to wind down. Alec, sensing his time for socializing had come to an end, suggested they head home. Anna agreed, and they made their way outside, the cool evening air hitting them as they walked down the quiet streets of Broadchurch towards home.
As they strolled side by side, the soft sounds of the sea in the distance, Alec slipped his hands into his coat pockets, his shoulders visibly more relaxed than usual. Anna glanced up at him, a playful smile on her lips.
“You know,” she started, linking her arm through his as they walked, “You were pretty sociable back there. I’m impressed.”
Alec huffed a quiet laugh. “I’m not that antisocial.”
“No, but you were great,” Anna continued, her tone sincere. “They were happy to see you there, even if they making fun of you a bit. It meant a lot to them, I think.”
Alec shrugged modestly, but there was a softness in his expression. “Well, you’re the reason I went. I wouldn’t have gone if it weren’t for you.”
Anna smiled. “I think they appreciate the changes they’ve seen in you. They even thanked me for it.”
Alec’s brow furrowed slightly. “Changes?”
“Uh huh. They said you’re kinder, and they like that you actually leave work on time now too,” Anna teased gently.
“Well, maybe you’ve been a good influence.”
“I’m glad you think so…” Anna replied, leaning in to press a quick kiss to his cheek before flashing him a cheeky grin. “…Shitface.”
Alec shot her a sideways glance, smirking. “Oh god, don’t you start.”
They continued walking in companionable silence, the stars just starting to peek out in the evening sky. Alec couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment as they walked home together. Life felt balanced - work, home, and Anna by his side.

Chapter 6: Women are like that, you know?
"Get your hands off me!! I swear to god I'm calling the police" the man pleas were coming from the back of the house when Miller and Hardy arrived at Norbury's house.
"Yeah, well guess what lad? I'm the bloody police!!" A woman voice said and they start running to see what happened when they realized it was Harford voice.
"Harford what the fuck are you doing?" Ellie said, mildly impress by how she was pressing the man against the wall since he was almost twice her size.
"This numpty was trying to break into the house and refuse to tell me why" She then let go, and they could see she already had him in handcuffs.
"I said I left my keys inside, you didn't have to be such a bitch about it!" The man said and Hardy had to put himself in front of Miller before she could react the way he also wanted to.
"Your keys? Is this your apartment?" He said glaring at the man who was now looking at his feet avoiding Alec.
"Yeah, I mean no, is my friends apartment, I water his plants but I left my keys inside because he was supposed to come back yesterday but he didn't so..."
"You thought breaking in was a good idea?" Miller said every time more annoyed by the man, he was large, strongly built and had brown hair and green eyes that she could swear she have seen before just wasn't sure where.
"Look madam I was not breaking in, my boy Johnny gave me permission to come in ok? I just left my keys inside" he said with a condescending tone in the way he said madam that make her understand why Katie react that way "Now could you please take this off?" He ask to Hardy holding up the handcuffs.
"We might have questions for you later, you sit here and wait, we'll come back to you" Hardy said and pointed to a patio chair so he could sit. "Are you okay?" He asked Katie once he was away.
"Yes sir, he just got on my nerves, I can watch him while you go inside" She assured him.
"That cut over his left brow?" Miller asked looking one more time at the guy trying to figure out who he was.
"He had it already, I didn't do that" Harford said immediately. "Although it may have reopen when I pushed him against the wall, sorry"
"Fine, why don't you get inside with Miller, you need more field work anyway, I will talk with our friend" Alec said, please to see how she struggled to hide her happiness and simply nodded yes before saying anything else.
Unlike Y/N's cottage that was organized except for the site were they found Jonathan, the apartment was a wreck, there were empty soda cans on the living room and take out boxes everywhere, not exactly like it have been inhabited for the last five days.
"Ok let's do this" Alec said taking off the handcuffs off the man, "What's your name?"
"Charles Langford, you can call me Charlie if you want" he said rubbing his wrist "Hey what is this all about? Why are they going in Jonathan's place? Is he in trouble?" He asked when he saw Miller and Harford moving items in the house trough the window.
"Let me do the questions Mr. Langford... is Ashley Langford related to you?" He asked suddenly remembering the name.
"Yeah she is my sister, we run a local Deli together, why?"
"Mr. Langford we are investigating the homicide of Jonathan Norbury, information that has yet to be released to the public, and I need to ask you some questions about the victim, please I would need your discretion" he said and the man open his eyes wide in shock.
The kitchen was oddly clean, there were not even dirty dishes in the sink, wich was odd since the living room was fill with leftovers, and the fridge had only a few essentials, milk, eggs, ham and some apples.
"What does the victim did for a living?" Katie asked looking at the cabinets and then to a black knife set next to the stove.
"He owned a small electronic store downtown, why?" She asked not entirely concerned about the content of the fridge but with the lack of something.
"Those are Global Knives, the NI Series I think, those are expensive about £700.00, I mean people here don't use electronics that much do they? Is weird he can afford them" She said.
"And you want to get weirder? There's one missing" Miller said pointing at the place in the knives block where the 20cm knife should go. "How do you know how much they cost?" She ask Katie rising a brow.
"My dad... he thought it may be a nice gift for Trish at her new house" she said clearly embarrassed.
"Is that still going?" Miller said and immediately felt bad for bringing it up.
"Yeah, I mean I have tried to make him move on, but he says he is in love, so is a lost cause" She said trying to end the conversation.
"Well love does bring out either the best or worst from people, and we can't really blame them for it do we?, he will be fine, he is a good man" She said and gave her a sympathetic look. "Let's take a picture of the knives and let forensics deal with it later, let's check the room" She walked out and Harford followed her grateful for not having to talk about her father anymore.
Charles didn't cry, he only put both of his hands on his head and star saying jibberish, not able to cope with the news.
"When did it happen? I just text him yesterday, he said he was on his way back, that's why I let the keys inside, since he was coming back, but he didn't answer his phone this morning so I walked by to see if he was already home" he said covering his face letting go a painful growl "Wait a minute, how is Y/N? does she know already? She is gonna have one of her attacks again, jesus, she must be terrified" he said talking fast almost with no spaces between every word.
"Miss Y/L/N is alright, she is currently in a safe and private location for her own good, that's why we need all the information we can get about the victim" Alec said and the man looked at him straight in the eyes.
"Sure, anything I can do to help" he appear honest.
"How long did you know him?" He took out a notebook and a pen.
"Johnny? About five years? Maybe less, he started hanging out with Ash and Y/N shortly after he moved here, the girls the have been friends forever, since they were a pair of brats you know? He opened his shop, and when he start dating Y/N I guess we became friends like two years ago." He was nervous maybe because his friend was dead, but maybe not.
"Did he had enemies?" Hardy didn't like him, but he didn't like anyone so that was not odd "Someone that may wanted to hurt him?"
"Enemies? That's a bit drastic isn't it?" He tries to joke and Alec dead stare make him quiet "No, I mean he was a great lad, a bit loud when he got mad, but thankfully he had a good one, Y/N was such a good girl for him, is so bad she has to be alone now" he said and the last part of it doesn't sit well on Hardy.
"What do you mean a good one?" He asked trying to hide the anger in his voice.
"Well women here, after what happened to Trish Winterman, you can no longer even say hi to girls without them looking bad at you, and they always expect too much from you, bloody fuds" The urge on Hardy to beat his head against the floor was growing and the man won't shut up "And Y/N is good, she never make Johnny mad and stayed at her place like a decent woman, we are almost family, can you tell me where she is? Or at least let Ash visit her? She would need her friend?" He said and start biting his nails a fact that make him more repellent.
"When was the last time you saw the victim?" He asked completely ignoring his questions.
"Last monday, Y/N planned a farewell dinner since he was going to London and we went to dinner at her cottage." He responded, again scared by Alec cold look. "Told you, she is a fine woman"
The bedroom was also spotless, no evidence of struggle, no visible traces of blood, just a laundry basket with dirty clothes both from the victim and she assume Y/N, a drawer full with used parts from different electronic devices, and the victims laptop, wich went straight into an evidence bag to be analize, the rest was in the capable hands of Brian.
"Did you visit miss Y/L/N house any other time last week?" Now no longer capable of hiding his repulsion for the way he expressed about the woman almost as if she was some sort of property.
"I drove her to work on Friday, my sister ask me to, that woman drinks like a fish that's why she is not married, she got hammered the night before and asked me to open up the deli for her and take her friend to work, theyhave taken care of each other since my parents kick her out of the house so I was happy to help, I pick her up at the cottage." He was so full of himself when he talked, bit the fact that he said the house and not their house have him an idea.
"Do you live on your own Mr. Langford, does anyone can confirm your movements?" Alec asked casually.
"Oh no, I take care of my parent, I got the big house, with the old guys, but not for long right? They will tell you" He said confirming what Hardy suspected.
"We'll check that, in the meantime stay away from this property" Alec said and pointed the exit "One more thing Mr. Langford, how did you get that cut? He pointed to his own brow but the man understood
"I told you, Women are like that you know? A girl from the bar was all chatty and funny and suddenly got all crazy, she is lucky I didn't call the police on her" He said and finally left,
"A new suspect?" Miller ask once Alec entered the house.
"A misogynistic bastard, but not sure if a murderer" He said quickly reading the texts "We have to go, Harford keep looking up the place, wait for Brian and report to us."
"What? What happened?" Ellie said aware that something must have gone terribly wrong.
"I'm killing your bloody nephew that's what happened!" He said showing her the Broadchurch Echo Headline from that morning.
The abominable bride: Local teacher suspect in the murder of fiance
Next there was a picture that god know how he got from Y/N covered in blood.
"Paul says some reporters are already near the church" Alec continued with obvious anger in his voice.
"I deal with Olly, you get Y/L/N out of there" Ellie said quickly and start walking towards the car. "I swear to god that man boy is going to need a hospital when I'm done with him"
They walked out letting a confused Katie behind, but she walked off and resumed her work taking pictures of the house waiting for Brian's team to arrive.
