Our roads were paved with wood.
Sometimes known as Nicholson Paving, wooden blocks were used in St Petersburg in 1820 and Manchester in 1838.They were first suggested for Melbourne and Sydney streets in the early 1840s to overcome ongoing problems of sticky mud in winter and clouds of dust in summer.
But the honour of having Australia’s first wood paved streets goes to Echuca on the Murray River in 1867.  Test sections were laid in Melbourne at Spencer Street in 1880, and by March 1881 the wood paved intersection of Collins and Swanston streets was opened to traffic.
Hailed as being easy on horses hooves, clean, noiseless, low maintenance and durable solution to problems of street surfacing, hardwood blocks were laid vertically and coated annually with tar, a byproduct of the numerous coal-gas plants around the city.
Western Australian hardwoods were the undisputed kings of wood pavers, with Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) and Karri (E. diversicolor) used extensively to pave the streets of London in 1893 and later in Freemantle in 1898.
Blue Gum (E. globulus), Gippsland Grey Box (E. bosistoana) and River Red Gum, then known as E. rostrata were the most common species used for paving in Victoria because of their inherent strength, durability and hardness as well as their ready availability from State forest and private land.
The Forbes Sawmill at Briagolong was one of many that cut red gum for street paving during the 1880s, while the forests along the Murray River also produced millions of blocks. The Goodwood Sawmill in the Mullungdung State forest near Yarram was a big supplier of durable Yellow Stringybark (E. muelleriana) to the Public Works Department. In 1897, A. C. Mountain published "Wood-paving in Australia", in which he recorded 112 acres of wood paving in Melbourne streets. That roughly equates to a staggering twenty million blocks.
By 1915 wood paving extended to most streets of central Melbourne, as well as many in the inner suburbs.Wood paving blocks were also used to build a new electric tram route across South Melbourne to St Kilda as late as 1925.
Bluestone blocks were more common in laneways and along gutters.
But by the 1930s wood paving was being replaced with concrete and the old tar-impregnated blocks became a popular substitute for firewood.
In 1954 the Melbourne City Council distributed 500 tons to pensioners for winter fuel.

Campervan Rental Melbourne: Top Swimming Holes in Victoria
When you are in Victoria, you cannot miss out on the beautiful places carved for recreation. These swimming holes are specifically tended for people who love the water and would love to go splashing around. Here we will take you through the top swimming holes around Victoria that you should visit. Make sure to find a parking spot for your campervan rental Melbourne before you play splish-splash with the water. 1.    Ladies Bath Falls is located in Victoria’s high country. It is located in a place where the air is clear and mountains are rocky. This is the part of the falls where women used to swim and enjoy the cool waters. It is a good 20-minute drive from Mount Buffalo. If you want to beat the heat of the summer season, this is a good place to go. You must be careful while treading the rocks as they can be quite slippery 2.   Venus Baths is about three hours from Melbourne and is a popular swimming hole. You also have the MacKenzie falls in the same location Grampians National Park but it is not a swimming hole. You can park your motorhome hire Melbourne somewhere nearby. You should walk in the 2.3 km trail from halls gap to the baths. The bath is surrounded by rock pools. It also comprises of natural waterslides and rock formations. 3.    If you want to give in to your temptation for hiking and swimming, you should go to the Blackwood Pool at Werribee George. It is not only a great place to fulfil your hiking dreams, but also an excellent swimming hole. It moves around the Werribee River, which means there are several holes along this river but, this pool is the biggest and the most significant one. 4.    Another excellent and attractive swimming hole somewhere around three hours from Melbourne is the Blue Pool at Briagolong State Forest. It also hosts several campgrounds where you can park your campervan rental Melbourne. It also houses an amazing swimming pool in the surrounding. If you go there during the summers, you will enjoy the cool breeze and the incredible waters. This is an excellent way to beat the summer heat 5.    If you are fine with travelling a bit, then you should go to the Croajingolong National Park. It is a seven hour ride from Melbourne towards Sydney. If you plan to enter the national park, don’t forget to carry your camping gear with you. along with the several wild animals and long beach walks, you will be greeted by the swimming holes and river streams that make your summers interesting. 6.    The Pound Bend at the Warrandyte National Park is another swimming hole. It is a 45-minute drive from Melbourne. If you love beaches or wild parks, then this is a good place to visit. You can take a dip in the swimming hole or you can simply chill by the banks of the river Yarra. If you want, you can also use floating tubes and float on the water. It is a good idea to book a space to park your motorhome hire Melbourne.

Just got back from a sheep farm in Briagolong where I scored some of the nicest Silky Oak in the Southern hemisphere I think. Covered in dust in a shed surrounded by sheep. 🐑🐏 Look at the grain as I plane it back. You just never know what you can find tucked away on an Aussie farm! Grown locally too, bonus. MasterChef Australia XI: The Recap of the First Two Weeks
Hello, Aussies!  It’s time for me to run the short recap of what happened in the first two weeks of the 2019 season of MasterChef Australia, on its 10th anniversary of the show.
Here’s my report based on what I found on the other recaps and on Wikipedia as I am no Aussie.
Like most of past seasons, the first week of the season began with two episodes of auditions, as many home cooks are being slowly and surely reduced to the top 24.  And on the first challenge of the season, as the new roster sharpened their knives for battle, with no one going home on the first week.  Their first challenge is to cook a dish that they would like to eat while marooned on the desert island, as I dub this one the “Desert Marooners Challenge”.
As no one is going home, they are competing for the first shot at Immunity ahead of the first mystery box.  Fortunately for Dee, Joe, Mandy, and Tim, it was easy: just beat the others for the pin, as Curtis Stone is not to be challenged at all.  Tim wins and takes the first pin.
As the first Mystery Box rolls in at the show’s new scheduling time, as usual like the past seasons of the show on the second week, Abbey wins the Judges’ Favorites Mystery Box, only to be the only one safe from a surprise elimination that no chef has seen coming!  This surprise ended Tim’s relationship with his immunity pin prematurely as the Black Mystery Box of Doom comes in.  Tim’s well-timed use of his pin renders him immune from the two terrifying eliminations, starting with that black mystery box, with dark ingredients which the 22 chefs had to use to create a cohesive high-quality dish.
Fortunately, Tessa, Kyle, and Darek managed to ace the test with glory, joining Abbey in the immunity challenge, while Huda’s overcooked and flavorless steak dish costs her the competition.
Why did she have to go, ahead of the pressure test?  To get rid of the odd chefs and make the way for the first team battle of the season!  What a way to start a season with terrifying twists!
Even with Huda’s elimination, Dee, Nicole, and Yossra still didn’t do enough to avoid a Pressure Test and had to perfectly replicate Darren Purchese’s Bombe Alaska, which is a Bread Alaska dessert that is flambeed with a rum, with 45 steps to make it and no time for error.  Alas, Yossra strayed too far from the perfect creation and became the second casualty.
With two chefs gone, the chefs who excelled with the mystery boxes competed against each other to determine who gets to face Max Sharrad for the Pin.  Darek and Tessa won the opportunity to beat him.  Darek failed to beat Max Sharrad, but Tessa beats him, earning her pin.
With her pin on her blue apron, her team fought the Battle of Briagolong, catering to a feast with seafood against the red team’s meat dishes.
In the end, Team Meat delivered a glorious victory, costing Tessa her pin.
As Tessa immunizes herself from elimination due to her team’s failure, the rest of her defeated team competed in the two-round “Favorites and Least Favorites” elimination.  Alas for Yossra, she’s the third casualty as she struggled with both her favorite and least favorite ingredients in the two rounds.  She served the worst dish and she was sent home because she didn’t hero her favorite ingredient.  The others in round two redeemed themselves.
Now there are only 21 chefs left, and they’re ready to face a new week with a recurring guest judge Nigella Lawson.
I know her from the shortlived US TV Series “The Taste” as a mentor of the weakest chefs of the final season of The Taste, with all of her chefs being eliminated.  She may have failed as a recurring mentor of The Taste, but she might do well in her judging duty as a guest judge at Australia.
Now I’m off to Minds to throw the oligarchy under the bus.
