2024 Book #117
Title: Ithaca Author: Claire North Genre: Historical Fantasy Series: The Songs of Penelope, Book 1
‘The greatest power we women can own is that which we take in secret.’ Seventeen years ago, King Odysseus sailed to war with Troy, taking with him every man of fighting age from the isle of Ithaca. None of them has returned, and the women of Ithaca have been left behind to run the kingdom. Penelope was barely into womanhood when she wed Odysseus. While he lived, her position was secure. But now, years on, speculation is mounting that her husband is dead, and suitors are beginning to knock at her door. No one man is strong enough to claim Odysseus’s empty throne – not yet. But as everyone waits for the balance of power to tip, Penelope knows that any choice she makes could plunge Ithaca into bloody civil war . . .

Quick thoughts: fuck men and them poets 🖕🖕🖕. feminist retellings of mythology my absolute beloved. scathing, laugh out loud funny, athena is a pick-me and that's fucking hilarious. the feminine rage 🤌🤌🤌
CW: SA (nothing explicit but very prevalent)
Similar Recs: 1) Kaikeyi by Vaishnavi Patel 2) Circe by Madeline Miller* 3) Ariadne by Jennifer Saint*
*have not actually read these but from the sounds of them they are very similar

barely a month into 2024 and i think ive found my reoccuring music obsession ! title fight ! theyve been on my radar for years now but recently ive started to delve into their sound and holy shit dude. my top song is def 27 and i highly recommend it to anyone.
other than that, kiss the ladder by fleshwater has one of the most amazing intros ever. heavy with the distortion and soft female vocals which im a sucker for. the chord progression is so magical and gives me goosebumps every first listen. very lsd and the search for god vibes.
also im quite liking the idea of posting every sunday my air buds recap :)

bri is ridiculously meticulous. someone who can put names to faces, projects to names, parts to wholes, and so on. this is why I always situate her in a corporate oversight position. In her cyberpunk verse, she has an augmented memory chip. In others, she’s tirelessly on top of reviewing and updating files with new information on projects and employees. her memory is really sharp.
basically, she knows what you did last quarter.
#(( had a funny thought of bri meeting former rda/resistance leaders and being 'oh you're so and so who worked on xyz (15 years ago)'#know your enemy but also reviewing former pandora programs to learn from them ))#( hc ) .

suptober day 7: fine wine
@winchester-reload ’s suptober 2022 event
Castiel watched Dean move around the kitchen with confidence; he peeled potatoes, chopped carrots, and stooped to observe his roast through the oven door window, before grabbing his timer off the counter and adjusting it by a few minutes.
Castiel sat at the counter, sipping the wine Dean had chosen to complement their meal, and observed his husband on their twenty-eighth anniversary. He was just as beautiful as ever, with white hair and crinkles at the corners of his eyes that never went away but waited there for his next smile.
And Castiel loved him more with each passing day.

suptober day 2: pillow talk
@winchester-reload 's suptober 2022 event
Dean's head dropped onto Castiel's shoulder just before the end credits rolled; Castiel could only assume he'd fallen asleep.
Without looking, though, he could steal some minutes of imagination. That Dean had sat beside him on the couch with this intention, slouching ever closer as the film dragged on and gradually building enough courage to touch.
But now he looked, and Dean must have felt the slight turn of his head because he woke with a start.
"Sorry, man. I didn't mean to use you like a pillow."
"It's fine," Castiel said, and his mind returned to guarding his heart.

"Who’s that?” he pointed at the devastatingly handsome man next to Sam.
“That’s Cas,” Sam replied, “he’s a friend.”
“I’m an angel,” the man said.
Dean smirked. “Yeah I’ll bet. And did it hurt when you fell from heaven?”
Sam rubbed a hand over his face. “No, he’s... you know what, nevermind. I’m going to fix this. Dean, stay put. Cas, watch him.”
“So,” Dean began after Sam shut the door behind him, “how should we pass the time?” He looked Cas up and down suggestively.
Cas blinked at him.
“Huh. Are we not together? I must be an idiot.”

sometimes i think abt how seven husbands of evelyn hugo (2017) by taylor jenkins reid is, quite literally, everything tellier did with the magnificent sin (1930) except theres a lavender marriage subplot. entire plot hinges on woman forwarding career by loving man after man, but in reality she loves one woman. theres suicide and tragedy, but tellier gives his leading lady a shitty 'happy' domestic ending instead of a drug overdose
#which is all to say i think it would be hilarious to show tellier#that booktok and critical reviewers are in love with his failure of a debut novel#twilight bri

Strangers in Our Heads
Dates Read: 10/17/23 - 10/21/23
"We’re the invisible, the lost, the ones hiding under the radar. Society forgot us long ago, or maybe they never even knew we existed. Either way, we’re no one." • SIOH is an exciting story about a group of teens with special abilities outrunning the evil authorities whose aim it is to capture them for being different. Gemma is an orphan who loses the only blood relation she has left in a hit-and-run that causes her full powers to blossom uncontrollably. Convinced the strange boy in her dreams is the only source of comfort she has left, she runs away from her foster home to protect those still in her life from herself. Meanwhile, Theo is watching over a group of other younger powerful misfits living off the grid by stealing food, siphoning gas, and participating in illegal fighting rings for cash that he spends on getting tattoos of the mystery girl from his dreams. It isn't until he and Gemma cross paths in the woods that they realize their subconscious held more truth than fantasy.
I absolutely adore dual POV, especially when I ship the main characters so much! Gemma and Theo have such unique voices and experiences that complement each other. Knowing that they're primed to find one another and already have such great chemistry makes the build up to their meeting all the more anticipated. Found family is one of my favorite tropes and it's a major theme in this story. The cast of side characters is fleshed out and they all contribute immensely to the overall plot; each one has their own backstory and unique personalities and I loved them all. The tension throughout the story mounts continuously until it all comes to a head in an explosive and exciting way. Secret after secret is creatively revealed, leaving me shocked.
I cannot wait to discover what's next for this ragtag group of misfits!
Huge thank you to the wonderfully talented author, Bri Eberhart, for providing me an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. • E's Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

@badtrigger : ❝ I need you to trust me, and do exactly as I say. ❞ // santiago bri, any fc verse | resident evil: 4 remake starters ( accepting!! )
Undeniable is the natural beauty of these islands, but it’s offset by volatility. Whether it’s the fauna that prowl the dense foliage with their fangs and claws or the inhabitants that carry their guns and knives, there are too many ways to die on the islands of Rook and too many things to fear. But with Mister Moncada as her guide (and protector), Brianne is more inclined to accept an invitation to explore the ancient ruins tucked away in the jungle. It’s the experience even a rich girl like her can’t get anywhere else, the offset of boredom of an extended layover, and an opportunity to spend time with her quiet guide who is making her all shades of curious.
Halfway to their destination on a well-trodden path, gunshots ring from behind making turning around and back to where they parked the jeep is impossible. Run, he tells her, and run she does, staying ahead of the Pirate whose broad body might unintentionally shield her from the bullets as his pistols playback in defense. The onslaught necessitates a turn from the straight path, but racing through the jungle overgrowth slows her already dreadful pace — and good thing too for he catches her arm, yanking her body back just in time before footing slips her off the cliff face that finds them both stopped.
Down is a straight drop of enumerable meters set aside a half-wall of high waterfalls that aurally blanket the area in the sound of a calming rush. With dual pistols holstered, his free hands make purchase on the tops of her shoulders. Her whole body shakes but under this grounding touch, she can remind herself to breathe. Stare, which sat wide in shock at the distant blue pool of water below, drags up to his for guidance. Those brown eyes are always stern, his steady voice set to match, but somehow it’s only comforting amid the chaos.
❝ I need you to trust me, and do exactly as I say. ❞
“I trust you.” At a pause in erratic breath, this certainty flows, not needing another thought. He has given her no reason not to trust him. Quick nods closely chase and somehow in the pit of a stomach knotting in despair, she knows he’s going to tell her to jump.

Out of Blue (15): Strangely Unsettling Murder Mystery from Carol Morley.
#onemannsmovies review of "Out of Blue" (2018). Intriguing, stylish crime film that is less about the murder and more about the cop. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Out of Blue” (2018). My thanks to my #flickeringdreams colleague the Reverend Andy Godfrey for putting me onto this one. He saw “Out of Blue” at a BFI retrospective season of the work of director Carol Morley and likened it to the recent “To Catch a Killer” that I enjoyed. Actually, although I’m not sure the parallels with the recent Sky movie are that strong,…
