I can’t believe it’s been almost 2 years since the last “in-person” Layne Staley Tribute. This was in the green room at the Nectar Lounge on night 1 of 3. It was a cool moment when I got to introduce Brendan Maier & Mom Anna to Layne’s Mom, Nancy. Although you can’t see it in the pic, Brendan is holding a can of what we Washingtonian’s call “Vitamin R” aka Rainier Beer. Looking forward to seeing me pseudo nephew in 2 weeks. ‘Well,’ May begins, the laughter in her voice bright, breathless. Her bandana is missing; she must’ve lost it somewhere in the fall. ‘That was unexpected.’

‘Uh, yeah,’ is all Brendan can manage right then. His lungs feel crushed, but he can’t tell if it’s from the warm press of their bodies or the beast-like thumping in his chest. Probably both.

May, bless her heart, doesn’t seem to care about any of that: she peers down at the infinitesimal space between them in deep concentration, wiggling her arms and legs experimentally. ‘Hm, I don’t think anything’s broken... I’ll check again after we get up, but – yay! That’s a good thing, right?’

Brendan hums in vague agreement. Considering the way they just tumbled down the length of Jagged Pass – he makes a mental note to let Flannery know about the patch of loose soil near the summit – it’s a miracle that they’re both unharmed.

Either way, May can’t get up until he does, so he has to move first. He digs the heels of his palms into the ground, pushing himself up and away from her into a standing position –

– only to hiss as a burst of white-hot fire envelops his right ankle.

‘Brendan!’ May cries out in alarm. She barely has time to straighten up before he loses his balance and collapses into her, face crumpled in pain. ‘Brendan, oh my god, are you – what happened? Are you hurt?’

He’d spoken too soon about that miracle, dammit. Brendan smiles at the irony through gritted teeth, smiles at the girl steadying him with small, calloused hands. ‘My ankle – I think it’s sprained.’

‘Oh my god. C’mon, we’ve gotta get you to the nearest Pokecentre – ’

‘No,’ Brendan blurts. May blinks at him, bewildered, but he brushes past her confusion and goes on, more firmly and quietly this time: ‘No Pokecentres. Please.’

He doesn’t want anyone else to see him like this. He’s the Champion of the region, the son of the highly esteemed Petalburg Gym Leader; he’s the one who tamed the legendary weather beast and brought Team Aqua to their knees. Everywhere he goes, he has duties to fulfil, roles he must play.

It’s only when he’s alone with May that he can finally be himself.

May regards him for a moment, her expression unusually soft, but he can’t tell if it’s out of well-intentioned concern for him or understanding for what he really means.

Probably both.

‘Okie dokie,’ she says, regaining her cheer. Without missing a beat, she unclips a pokeball from her belt and lets out her tropius, extending a hand to him once she’s secure on its back. ‘My secret base isn’t too far from Jagged Pass – lucky! I do keep some of my spare healing supplies there.’

Brendan smiles, and takes her hand.

The Crocodile had always been my favorite venue for the annual Layne STALEY tribute. There’s so much energy and for myself, I can sense spirits lingering around. Nehi Stripes Seattle received a very GENEROUS donation from Michigan rock photographer Paul Jendrasiak this week. Paul sent 3 - 11x14” signed portraits of Layne. Images he took during Clash of the Titans and Van Halen tours, both in 1991. These portraits will be part of a silent auction at the 2021 Layne Staley Tribute on August 21. All proceeds will go to the Layne StaleyFunds through Therapeutic Health Services. I want to thank Paul for these really incredible donations. I hope that this will be another reason why you shouldn’t miss this year. Local Alice in Chains tribute band JAR OF FLIES (the ultimate AIC experience) takes the stage to raise money for The Layne Staley Fund and offer grunge fans the ultimate Alice in Chains experience for one night only. The annual Layne Staley Tribute, presented this year by STG Presents and KISW 99.9FM is different – after a year of COVID-19 restrictions, fans and grunge-lovers can come out to the Neptune Theatre and re-live the grunge years with a live performance by Seattle’s Jar of Flies – The Ultimate AIC Experience - who will be covering the music of Alice in Chains all night long. The annual Layne Staley Tribute is a Seattle tradition for fans from all over the world to gather and celebrate the music, life and continued legacy of Layne Staley and all of the musicians who left this world too young. The tribute will feature special guest appearances by Layne’s mother, Nancy McCallum who founded The Layne Staley Fund and works to raise awareness of drug addiction and recovery programs. A silent auction and raffle including memorabilia from Nancy’s collection of artifacts, will be held to help raise additional money for the Layne Staley Memorial Fund. Tickets to the Layne Staley Tribute Show are $22.50, and can be purchased through Ticketmaster at STGPresents.org starting at 10:00am on Friday, July 9th.
