The Mercs Driving - Updated
So a bit over a year ago, I made a post about my headcanons around the mercs and their driving abilities. I figured it wouldn't hurt to do a new one! Only because I have been thinking about Scout and driving and decided okay the others can get updated too a bit. As a treat. Who knows, maybe I'll update some other old posts too.
Scout: A little known fact about Scout is that he knows how to hotwire a car. A logical assumption based on this knowledge would be that he can also drive a car. This assumption would be, in fact, false. One of his brothers had taught him how to hotwire, because you never know when you'll be in a tight spot and need to 'borrow' a car. He knows how to drive in the technical sense. He knows how to start a car, where the brakes and accelerator are, et cetera et cetera. But when he actually tries to drive, he's really bad at it.
I believe this is because Scout is small and agile, used to having a lot of flexible mobility. A car, in contrast, is a big metal machine that is very much not flexible. Once he's in a driver's seat, he loses all spatial awareness, and feels awkward and out of place. This is also why he can drive something like a motorcycle, because a motorcycle is small and 'agile' in comparison to a car. RIP Scout TF2 you would have loved Smart Cars. Anyways, in a really dire situation, he can technically drive. He's just really bad at it and is guaranteed to hit something. Traffic laws will be broken.
Soldier: Like Scout, Soldier is an abysmal driver. Unlike Scout, Soldier believes that he is actually a good driver. This makes him a much greater danger around any automobile. He has been known to steal the company van for undisclosed reasons, and it always comes back a little worse for wear. Sometimes when the van disappears, the car keys are still back in the garage where they're meant to be. Also unlike Scout, Soldier doesn't actually know how to operate a vehicle. He just pushes and pulls at things until the car moves forward.
Additionally, the only person who allows Soldier to ride shotgun with them is Demoman. Having Soldier as a passenger is only marginally less dangerous than having him as your driver. He's loud and disruptive, pushes buttons he probably shouldn't, and historically has caused most of the accidents where the driver was someone who actually knows how to drive.
Pyro: No one has seen Pyro drive, and they all assume Pyro can't drive, because they have no way of confirming Pyro can or cannot drive unless they put Pyro behind the wheel. Which is a scary idea in the scenario where Pyro cannot. But the truth is, Pyro not only can drive, but does drive.
It just so happens that by some weird law of the universe (cartoon logic), nobody has noticed this. Somehow, every time Pyro takes the company van out for whatever they want to go do, nobody has any reason to go into the garage and notice the missing vehicle, and nobody needs to find Pyro for anything.
Demoman: Demoman is probably one of the most average drivers of the bunch. He can drive perfectly fine, he obeys traffic laws, and he somehow gets by without any depth perception. However, he has to be in the sweet spot where he's had enough to drink to avoid withdrawal, but he hasn't had so much to drink that he's in a state of incompetence.
There's also the tiny issue that if he gets pulled over, he will automatically fail any breathalyzer test, no matter how much he's had to drink, because his body literally produces its own alcohol. So Demoman is rarely the driver for the full team when they have somewhere to be, and most of his driving is done on his own time.
Heavy: Heavy can drive, and Heavy will drive. But this does not mean that Heavy likes to drive. Because most vehicles are designed for puny baby men, and not giant men who can crush skulls in their fists. Having to be hunched over in a tiny driver's seat puts Heavy in a bad mood, and nobody likes when Heavy is in a bad mood. So he only drives when he absolutely has to, such as in cases where everyone else he is with is unable to drive, such as seen in Expiration Date, where he has to drive because he's with Scout and Soldier, who cannot.
Engineer: Engineer is all around good with vehicles. He knows everything about any automobile you could bring him, and if he doesn't, he'll just take it apart and find out. He can also drive just about anything, with perfect precision and skill. Being a tinkerer, he often takes the opportunity to 'operate' on whatever vehicle he has at his disposal.
This includes those that aren't even his, such as Spy's car. It however does not include Sniper's van, as his first and last attempt almost ended in bloodshed. Spy's car nearly went the same way, but upon seeing how much faster it could go with the upgrades, Spy decided to find it in his heart to forgive the labourer. Sniper was not so easily persuaded.
Medic: Medic never bothered to get a driver's license. It seemed like such a waste of time, to get something he would probably end up losing in the future anyways. If there's anything Medic has learned, it's that licenses are overrated bits of paper, and it's the actual skill that ultimately matters. He happily drives around in his makeshift ambulance, stocked with emergency equipment and small organ refrigerators.
If any police officer dares to pull him over and ask for his license and registration, well, who is he to say no to more free organs? Medic has also had a history of grand theft auto, a most notable example being when he stole a catering van with some doves from a wedding.
Sniper: Sniper feels most at home when he's on the road. He's lived in his van as long as he's had it, that being since he could drive. The van is practically his soulmate. However, there are times when he has to be away from her, such as when he's driving the company van for everyone else. He and Engie are the most common picks for driver, with Sniper being picked just a bit more often. He's especially comfortable driving large bulky vehicles. In another life, Sniper would have been well suited to the life of a professional truck driver.
Spy: Spy drives an extremely expensive cherry red convertible sports car that easily costs more than a house. The car also has the ability to turn invisible for a period of time, which comes in handy when you need to make a getaway. And of course, a broken speedometer, courtesy of Engineer. Spy also knows how to drive a motorcycle, drive a speedboat, and fly a helicopter, but these are skills he employs less often.

I let out a long sigh as I see red and blue lights flash behind my car. It had already been a shitty day, and this just puts the cherry on top. It wasn’t long before the officer made his way to my window. I press the bottom, causing the window to slide down effortlessly. “Afternoon ma’am.” He says. “Where ya headed?” My eyes meet his, and my mind goes blank. I’ve never been sure about the entire “love at first sight.” Saying, but there was definitely something lurking around inside my chest when I lay eyes on him. “Ma’am?” He says, pulling me from my thoughts. “Oh.. um, I’m heading… heading home.” I stutter. “Are you okay?” He asks, giving me a questioning look. “Y-yeah.. it’s just been a long day.” I sigh. “Do you mind stepping out of the car for me?” He asks. It’s my turn to give him a questioning look. “Sure.. um, yeah.” I unbuckle and make my way out of the car. “Stand against the car for me please.” I move to the side of my car like he asks. “Do you mind if I search you?” He asks. “Search me? For what?” I ask. “You seem nervous, is all. Just making sure you don’t have anything on you.” He says sternly. I do as he says and drop my hands to my sides. He pats me down, checks my pockets and tells me I’m good. “So can I go now?” I ask. “Do you mind if I search your car?” He asks. “No, go ahead.” I say, knowing there’s nothing to hide.
He makes his way to my car, and I let out a sigh. ‘This is ridiculous.’ I think to myself. He lets out a victorious chuckle before opening my back door. He leans down to the floor, picking up a bottle. “Whats this?” He asks, holding up an empty beer bottle. I slowly shake my head. “That was from one of my friends the other day, she was drinking and I gave her a ride home.” I state. “You do know it’s illegal to drive with open containers in the car right?” He says. I let my head fall back with a sigh. “You can’t be serious? It’s not mine!” I explain. He sets the open bottle on top of my car roof before saying some type of police code over his walkie talkie. “I need you to turn around and put your hands behind your back.” He says. My heart sinks and my palms begin to get sweaty. “Are you serious?” I ask, defeated.
After this long week of work and my boss being up my ass twenty four seven, getting sick for three days, losing my laptop for work and now this. Tears swell up in my eyes and I turn around and place my hands behind me. I feel the officer come up behind me and softly grab my wrists. “I won’t put them on tight.” He whispers in my ear. A chill makes its way throughout my body. I sniffle as tears begin to fall down my cheeks. “Why are you crying, sweetheart?” He asks, clasping the handcuffs around my wrists. “It’s not my bottle officer, I swear.” I say in a small whisper, not having anymore energy to fight. “Darling, I wish I could help. But it’s the law.” He says. He walks me over to his patrol car and opens his trunk. He pulls out a small bag, containing a breathalyzer. He pulls it out and sets everything up. “If you blow zeros, I’ll let you go.” He states. I sniffle once again before giving him a small nod.
He brings the breathalyzer to my lips. “On 3, use those pretty lips and blow as long as you can.” He says. ‘Those pretty lips.’ Runs through my head again, right after her says it. ‘Is this man flirting with me?’ I think to myself. There’s no lie about how attractive he is, and how every time he gets close, my heart rate skyrockets. He sets it between my lips and counts down before I blow. I hear the machine beep and pull away. He looks at the machine in disappointment. “I was really hoping I didn’t have to do this to you.” He says, shaking his head. “What! There’s no way!” I fight back. I haven’t had anything to drink in over a week, there’s no way that stupid thing actually works. “I don’t appreciate the tone.” He says strictly. This shouldn’t be happening, but the raise and authority in his voice, sends shooting lust to my core. “I’m sorry.” I whisper to him. And smirk plays out on his face as he makes his way over to me. “You know.. I can tell you’re flustered.” He says, bringing his hand to cup my chin, making me look up at him. “You’re quite cute when you blush.” He states. Making the pink shade spread even further across my face. “Tha..thank you.” I whisper. I can’t take my eyes off of his. Out of nowhere, my boldness surprises me. Just from looking into his eyes, and the sound of his voice, with the feeling of his touch on my face. Brings out a me I never knew I had in me. “I’ll fuck you if you let me go.” I state. He looks at me with wide eyes, before breaking out in a huge beautiful smile. “Sweetie, that’d be against my job.” He states. “I wouldn’t tell, please… I can’t go to jail.” I beg.
It sounds desperate, and it is. But he’s beyond attractive and I seriously don’t want to lose everything I have over a stupid alcohol test, when I’m not even close to being drunk. “So naughty…” he whispers, bringing his face closer to mine. I can feel his breathe on my cheek as he talks. “It would be a good thing for someone to teach you how to behave huh?” He asks, bringing his hand to my cheek. His thumb rubs small circle on my cheek. My head falls into his touch, I can smell a faint whiff of his cologne as my head rests against his hand. “You can teach me, sir.” I whisper, giving him and innocent look, eyes wide and lips pouting. “Don’t look at me like that.” He says in a grunting way. Bringing his hand to my throat, very gently, wrapping his fingers around it, making me look into his eyes. “How are you doing this to me?” He asks, as if I’ve put a spell over him. “Do you want me?” I ask quietly. “You can have me officer… any way you like.” I say, leaning against his patrol car and pushing out my chest. “Fuck..” he whispers. He rubs his hand over his face and looks back at the highway. I can tell his in deep thought.
“I’ll do anything you want me to.” I say, trying to pull my hands from the cuffs, but they’re not going anywhere. “Honey, I’ll lose my job.” He says, making his way back over to me. He presses his body against mine, pushing me further against his car. I feel his belt press against my hips. “Sir, with all do respect. I don’t give a damn about your job.” I whisper, before slamming my lips into his. He lets out a small groan, falling into my trap. Our tongues fight together in unison. His hands wander their way around my entire body. I fight against the cuffs one more time, trying to touch him, to which I fail once again. “Mm… take these off of me.” I whimper into his kiss. He lets out a quick “Mm-mM.” Cupping my breasts into his palms, massaging them both gently between his fingers. “Trying to get away from me?” He asks. I shake my head. “Never.” I whisper as he licks a stripe up my neck, before planting a rough, wet kiss behind my ear.
“Why don’t you fuck me in the back of your car?” I ask innocently, starring up into his eyes. “Fuck.. don’t do this to me.” He breathes out, resting his forehead against mine. “I want you inside of me, sir.” I whimper, pressing my body flush against his. He lets out a groan as my knee slides against his hardening member. “Oh fuck it!” He says, defeated. He grabs my arm and pulls me away from the back door, before opening it. Right as I go to climb in, he grabs my arm, pulling me back into him. “If anyone finds out about this..” he starts. “They won’t, I promise.” I whisper, kissing his cheek gently, before giving him a reassuring smile. “God.. you do things to me.” He whimpers. “Get in.” He states, gesturing to the back seat of his car. I slowly climb into the gated back seat, struggling due to the handcuffs.
The officer makes his way into the back seat with me. “Bring those pretty lips here.” He states, taking my lips into his once again. His hands explore my body, they find every nook and cranny possible. Sending me into orbit. “Sir, what’s your name?” I ask gently. “It’s Chris, but I prefer you calling me sir. Sounds pretty coming from those lips.” He states. “Whats yours, pretty.” He asks. “Y/n…” I answer. “Y/n…..” he repeats. “Beautiful name, to match a beautiful woman.” He says, reaching for the hem of my shirt. A blush forms across my face. “May I?” He gestures to my shirt. I nod in agreement. He pulls it over my head, allowing it to rest against my cuffed wrists. My perking tits standing tall right infront of his face. He lets out a groan before taking my hardened nipple into his mouth. I let out a loud moan at the sensation. He works around my nipple for what feels like eternity, before pulling away and whipping his mouth.
“I want to fuck you..” he whispers, placing gently kisses around my face. “Then fuck me, sir.” I say, quietly. Looking into his eyes. “Gosh.. you can’t look at me like that.” He groans. He quickly pulls his uniform belt off, setting it on the floor of the car. Before unzipping his pants, dragging them down his legs, allowing his hardened member to spring free. My eyes travel towards it, and widen at the size. “Like what you see?” He smirks. “More than just ‘like’.” I say. “Do you love it?” He asks, taking his member into his palm, stroking himself while starring into my eyes. “I love your huge cock, sir.” I whimper. My cunt leaks at the sight of him. All fucked out already, and we have just started. “You keep calling me.. sir… I’m going to c…cum.” He groans out.
I sit up, moving closer to him. Pressing my lips against his ear. “Why don’t you put that cock to use inside of me?” I whisper before bringing his ear between my lips. He lets out a moan, throwing his head back as he strokes his length. “Take these cuffs off of me, please.” I ask innocently. “Please, what?” He asks. “Please sir.” I answer. He reaches in his shirt pocket and pulls out a tiny key. He reaches behind me and after a few seconds, the cuffs fall to the seat behind me. “Is that better princess?” He asks quietly. I slowly nod my head, before lunging at him, rubbing my hands through his hair as our lips connect feverishly.
I suddenly feel him enter me, too distracted by his lips to notice he was about to be inside of me. I let out a loud sigh as he stretches my cunt. “That’s right baby, does that feel good?” He says with a smirk, pulling out of me and slam back in. Too much pleasure to answer his question, my head throws back and my eyes shut tight. He continues to rail into me with no mercy. All that’s heard is the sound of our skin slapping together and our moans.
It’s not long before I feel my high coming. “Sir, sir… I’m gonna cum.” I moan out. “Good, cum for me princess. Cum all over that cock.” He groans out. I feel my stomach tighten as his cock begins to twitch inside of me. We both reach our highs at the same time, clinging together for dear life. After holding one another for what feels like hours, he pulls away. I hear something fall into the door of the car, so I sit up to grab it. It’s the breathalyzer. I pick it up and go to hand it to him when I notice the numbers on it… “00.00” “uhh… what’s this?” I ask, holding it up to show him the numbers. He looks up and lets out a small chuckle. “That’s your get out a jail free card.” He jokes. “You mean to tell me, I was never going to jail?” I ask.
“Honey, I was never gonna take you to jail anyway.” He says, pulling his pants back up. “Now… what’s your number?”

“Ma’am, I need you to get out and walk in a straight line for me,” Johnny opens your door with a grin on his face.
“What?” You hiss.
“You heard me. Standard check.”
“Why are you doing this?” You stare up at him.
“You’re not the one asking questions. Now get out and walk a fucking straight line before I drag you.”
You undo your seatbelt and get out. He doesn’t back up. You’re forced close to him as he crowds you against the car. He swings the door shut and points down the tarmac.
“Ten steps away and back.”
You obey, walking steadily while counting aloud, then turning and coming back. His smug expression irks you, more so it saddens you. You thought he loved you. All those years…
“Alright, now this time, I want you to touch your nose, back and forth,” he taunts, “tap with your finger, both hands.”
You cringe and turn your back to him. You take even paces, taping your nose first with your left, then your right, repeating it over and over until you’re back by your car. He snorts and taps his pen on his notepad.
“I think we should do a breathalyzer,” he glances over pointedly. You see Carol across the street, watching. Really?
“Can we just get this over with?” You whisper.
“What was that, ma’am?” He cups his ear, “you’re gonna have to speak up.” You frown and cross your arms. He tilts his head, “you getting defiant?”
You pull your arms apart and drop them straight. You lift your chin and stare at him. He directs you to follow him to his car. He has you stand by the hood as he goes inside to get the breathalyzer.
He brings it before your mouth and you put your lips around it. He tells you to blow, watching you with a sneer.
“Is that how you do it with him, hm? Getting sloppy all over his dick–”
You hear a car honk and another veers around. You glance over, popping your mouth off as the machine beeps. A door flings open as you recognise the car. You’re not so relieved to see Lloyd as he marches through traffic without a single concern for the residential traffic.
“Ey, Officer Fuckface,” he blusters over, only one button on his satin shirt buttoned, “you’re ruining date night.”
“Sir, go back to your car–”
“Sir, fuck off!” Lloyd retorts, “she’s over your limp dick. What do you want? You gonna smash her face in again? I’m sure resisting arrest is a fair story when you don’t have a dozen witnesses hanging around.”
His blunt words, the reminder of what Johnny did, makes you wince. He's so nonchalant it hurts as much as the memory.
“Sir,” Johnny puffs out his chest as he faces Lloyd and they come up close, “I said back up.”
“Make me, Officer Cum Sock.”
“You think I care about a slut?” Johnny growls.
“I think you get lonely without someone to tug you off for the thirsty seconds it takes you to drain those raisins you call balls,” Lloyd barks, “now I got a date. I’m due at six o’clock to blow a certain lady’s back out–”
Johnny doesn’t hold back. You feel the crack in Lloyd’s nose as Johnny suckers him. Lloyd recoils, covering his face with a hand as he snarls. Johnny pulls free his nightstick and you gasp. You latch onto his arm before he can swing at the other man.
Johnny tries to shake you off, knocking your head with the end of the club. You cry out and splay over the pavement. Dizzily you look up as Johnny staggers back. The men swing at each other. Lloyd deflects the night stick, grabbing onto it and twisting it free. He aims it at Johnny’s leg and knocks him on his ass.
You whine and try to crawl forward as Johnny shields himself. Lloyd lays another strike on his shoulder, then his forearm. Johnny cries out, grunting as he’s beat down by the angry man, satin fluttering in rage.
“Lloyd,” you get to your knees, regaining your senses, “please, stop, stop! You’re gonna kill him.”
“I fucking should,” Lloyd throws the night stick at Johnny so it bounces off his stomach.
“There’ll be more cops on their way,” you gulp.
“So the fuck what,” Lloyd nudges past you. You cling to his arm as you try to stop him. He wipes his face and spits blood onto the pavement as he bends over Johnny, “say hi to Fowler for me.”
“Fowler,” Johnny gurgles, his teeth red with blood.
“Have fun working the turf for life, scumbag,” Lloyd tries to shrug you off as you tug on him, “dollface, the men are talking.”
“You’ve done enough of that,” you turn and put your hand on his chest, “let me get you home. You’re bleeding all over.”
“What– huh?”
You reach up to touch his jaw as he looks down at you. You swipe your thumb over his mustache as the blood gushes down and stains the hair.
“Come on, you did good, let’s just go,” you plead gently, shaking, “I’ll get you cleaned up…” You try to look flirty but jitter instead, “so we can get dirty…”
You don’t sound convinced but he doesn’t seem to care and his lips curl, “oh, fuck yeah.”
“Alright, let’s go,” you pat his chest, “I’ll just go leave my car at the daycare, alright?”
His eyes are fiery with adrenaline. He peeks down at Johnny and you shake your head, saying his name firmly.
“I owe you, right?” You say, “can’t pay you back if you’re all messed up.”
He huffs and raises his hands. He takes a step on his heel. Johnny groans and coughs, “you’ll fuckin’ see–”
“Want more, baby dick?” Lloyd goes to charge at him and you insert yourself between them once more.
“Hey, hey,” you raise your voice, just a little, louder than you would ever dare. “I said get in your car,” you point at him, “if we’re not home by six, I’ll be too tired to…” you let your eyes trail down, unable to say the words out loud.
He follows your gaze, “you gonna… suck it?”
“Sure, please, just wait for me. In. The. Car.” You enunciate each word.
“What about this fuck?” He gestures to Johnny.
“Don’t think he’ll get up anytime soon,” you mutter, “go.”
“Hey, with that mouth on my mind, the weight of my balls is gonna throw me off too much to throw a good hook,” Lloyd cackles.
You give him a pointed look and he winks. He retreats and strides across the street, legs slightly apart as he ignores the car that beeps at him. You turn and look down at Johnny.
“I never cheated on you. Never would’ve,” you say softly, “I loved you, J.”
“Bullshit,” he spits.
You shrug and step over him. You can’t say your feelings for him are entirely gone, but you feel them dwindling. It’s clear to you now, he never cared as much for you as you did him.

The Basic details of DWI in Houston
Driving while intoxicated (DWI) is a serious offense that can lead to severe legal consequences in Texas. The state has strict laws and penalties in place to deter people from drinking and driving. If you have been charged with DWI in Houston, it is important to seek the services of an experienced DWI attorney Houston or Houston DUI attorney who can help you navigate the legal system and protect your rights.
In Texas, the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.08%. If you are pulled over and your BAC is found to be over the legal limit, you can be charged with DWI. However, even if your BAC is lower than 0.08%, you can still be charged with DWI if the officer believes that you are too impaired to drive.
The penalties for a first-time DWI conviction in Texas can be severe. You could face a fine of up to $2,000, up to six months in jail, and a license suspension of up to one year. You may also be required to install an ignition interlock device in your car, which requires you to blow into a breathalyzer before starting the car. Subsequent DWI convictions carry even harsher penalties.
If you have been charged with DWI in Houston, it is important to hire a DWI attorney Houston or Houston DUI attorney as soon as possible. These attorneys specialize in defending people charged with DWI and have the knowledge and experience necessary to build a strong defense for you. They can challenge the validity of the traffic stop, the accuracy of the breathalyzer test, and any other evidence against you.
One common defense strategy used by DWI attorneys in Houston is to challenge the results of the breathalyzer test. Breathalyzer tests are not always accurate and can be affected by a variety of factors, such as the type of alcohol you consumed, your body weight, and even the temperature of the breathalyzer machine. If your attorney can show that the breathalyzer test results are unreliable, it could help your case.

my unhinged mother is unhinged again. her doctor convinced her to do a sleep study even though it's unnecessary. we told her not to buy a sleep apnea machine bc she is the lightest sleeper ever. one time she yelled at me for cracking my knuckles when we slept in the same room and gave me a heart attack. there's no way she will be able to use this. and if she really is that concerned she can look into different options.
of course, she bought it anyway. and it's expensive.
i just walked upstairs, and she is wearing it. she's working at her desk wearing the fucking machine. i said what the fuck are you doing. she said the only way to get insurance companies to pay for it is to use it for at least four hours a day. I said why don't you wear it when you sleep. She admits she won't be able to sleep with it on. I ask if it's like a car with a breathalyzer, like the insurance company can tell and she can't just lie? she says yes.
so my mother would rather double down on wearing this machine for four hours a day until it's paid off. when she has the disposable income to just take the L, by the way. I don't know if returns are an option since it's all up in your face but maybe they could sterilize it. Idk.
This woman... I swear to God. She's a fucking sitcom character. She's a Seinfeld bit. She's not real.

Top-Rated DUI Lawyer in Canton, GA: Protect Your Rights with Expert Legal Defense
Tumblr media
Facing a DUI charge can be overwhelming and stressful. The legal consequences can impact your life in more ways than one. But you don’t have to navigate this process alone. With a top-rated DUI lawyer by your side, you can protect your rights, minimize penalties, and secure the best possible outcome. If you’ve been charged with DUI in Canton, GA, hiring an expert attorney is crucial. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about DUI and how a DUI lawyer can help you.
What is DUI?
Driving Under the Influence (DUI) is defined as operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, drugs, or a combination of both. In Georgia, the legal limit for blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.08% for drivers over 21, 0.04% for commercial drivers, and a strict 0.02% for drivers under the age of 21. Driving with a BAC above these limits is considered illegal and can lead to severe legal consequences.
It’s important to understand that DUI doesn’t just refer to alcohol impairment. You can also face DUI charges if you are found driving under the influence of drugs, whether they are prescription medications or illegal substances. This broad definition is what makes DUI cases complex, as many factors come into play when determining whether a person was truly impaired while driving.
Consequences of a DUI Conviction
A DUI conviction in Georgia can result in both short-term and long-term penalties. These consequences can affect various aspects of your life.
Criminal Penalties
Fines: First-time offenders can face fines ranging from $300 to $1,000. Repeat offenses carry even higher financial penalties.
Jail Time: Depending on the severity of the offense, you could face jail time for up to 12 months.
Probation: In many cases, probation may be offered instead of jail time, but this comes with its own set of rules and restrictions.
Community Service: You may be required to complete a set number of hours in community service, especially for first-time offenders.
Mandatory Treatment Programs: Alcohol and drug treatment programs may be required for rehabilitation purposes.
Impact on Driving Privileges
License Suspension: A DUI conviction can lead to the suspension or even permanent revocation of your driver’s license for up to 12 months.
Driving Restrictions: Even after the suspension is lifted, you may be subject to restrictions, such as using an ignition interlock device to ensure you are not driving under the influence.
Long-Term Consequences
Increased Insurance Rates: A DUI conviction almost always results in higher car insurance premiums.
Employment Impact: Having a DUI on your record can affect your chances of securing a job, particularly if the job involves driving.
Permanent Record: A DUI can stay on your criminal record for life, which could affect future opportunities.
How a DUI Lawyer Can Help You
Having a knowledgeable and experienced DUI lawyer is essential when facing charges. Here’s how they can help:
1. Case Evaluation
A DUI lawyer will begin by evaluating the specifics of your case. They’ll review the arrest details, the evidence gathered, and the tests performed to identify any weaknesses in the prosecution’s case. This evaluation is crucial in determining whether your case has any grounds for dismissal or if there are areas where penalties can be minimized.
2. Challenging Evidence
One of the most significant roles of a DUI lawyer is to challenge the evidence against you. This can include questioning the accuracy of breathalyzer tests, the proper calibration of the machine, or whether the officer followed legal protocol during your arrest. Errors in the collection or handling of evidence can lead to the dismissal of the case.
3. Building a Strong Defense
Your lawyer will craft a defense tailored to the specifics of your case. If you were unlawfully pulled over or your rights were violated during the arrest, these details will be key to your defense. DUI lawyers are skilled in identifying procedural errors that can work in your favor.
4. Mitigating Penalties
If a conviction seems unavoidable, a DUI lawyer can negotiate a plea deal on your behalf. This may involve reducing the charges to a lesser offense, such as reckless driving, or negotiating for probation instead of jail time. Skilled negotiation is one of the most powerful tools a DUI lawyer can offer.
5. Handling the Administrative License Hearing
In Georgia, if you refuse to take a breathalyzer test or if you fail the test, you can face an automatic suspension of your driver’s license. You have just 30 days to request an administrative license hearing. A DUI lawyer will ensure this process is handled correctly, increasing your chances of retaining your driving privileges.
Understanding DUI Laws in Georgia
Georgia’s Implied Consent Law
Georgia’s Implied Consent Law requires drivers to submit to chemical tests (such as breath, blood, or urine tests) if suspected of DUI. Refusal to submit to these tests can result in an automatic suspension of your license for up to 12 months, regardless of whether you’re convicted of DUI.
Penalties for Refusing a Breathalyzer
Refusing a breathalyzer test may result in harsher penalties than if you had taken it and failed. This is why it’s essential to consult a DUI lawyer as soon as you’re arrested to understand your rights and options.
Key Qualities to Look for in a DUI Lawyer
Choosing the right lawyer is critical. Here are some essential qualities to look for:
Experience in DUI Defense: Find a lawyer with a proven track record of handling DUI cases.
Local Expertise: A local lawyer will have better knowledge of Canton’s legal system and judges.
Good Communication: You want a lawyer who keeps you informed and answers all your questions promptly.
Common DUI Defenses in Canton, GA
A DUI lawyer can use several strategies to defend you against the charges. Here are some common ones:
Challenging the Traffic Stop
If there was no reasonable suspicion to pull you over, any evidence gathered after the stop may be inadmissible in court.
Questioning the Accuracy of Sobriety Tests
Field sobriety tests and breathalyzers are not always reliable. A DUI lawyer can investigate whether these tests were administered correctly.
Disputing the Chemical Test Results
Even blood or urine tests can be inaccurate if not handled or processed correctly. A lawyer will scrutinize the chain of custody and testing procedures to find potential errors.
Conclusion
Facing a DUI charge in Canton, GA, is a serious matter, but with the help of a top-rated DUI lawyer, you can protect your rights and minimize the impact on your life. From challenging the evidence to negotiating better outcomes, a skilled DUI attorney is your best defense against the harsh penalties of a DUI conviction.

Is it legal to decline a Breathalyzer Test?
If a police officer pulls you over under the suspicion that you are an impaired driver, they’re going to ask to see more than just your license and registration. Alcohol screening is one of the best tools officers have at their disposal to determine if someone has been driving under the influence. In order to do this, they need to get a breath sample from the driver. If you’ve ever found yourself in this position (or not) — you’ve probably wondered if it’s legal to decline a test by a Breathalyzer machine . Although an officer cannot physically force you to provide a breath sample in Canada, refusing to do so will result in serious consequences.
Tumblr media
When can an officer demand a Breathalyzer machine test?
In December 2018, changes to Canada’s criminal code made it so officers who lawfully pull a driver over no longer need reasonable grounds to demand a breath sample. Prior to the change, an officer needed reasonable suspicion — the smell of alcohol on a driver’s breath, slurred speech, or strange behavior — before requesting a breathalyzer test. According to Nova Scotia RCMP Constable Chad Morrison, “If an officer is roadside with a vehicle, they … automatically have the authority to make a demand to any driver to provide a sample of their breath.”
What are the consequences of refusing a Breathalyzer test?
Under Canada’s new impaired driving laws, refusing an officer’s request to provide a breath sample carries severe penalties. You will face criminal charges, with penalties similar to an impaired driving conviction. These include:
Loss of driver’s license for at least one year
A fine of $1,000 to $2,000
Mandatory alcohol and DUI counselling
Why Breathalyzer machine tests are now mandatory
Canada’s new impaired driving laws have received criticism for casting too wide a net, the intention behind it is to save lives. The best thing you can do is act responsibly. Visit to source for more details.

A Virginia state prosecutor determined that a state police trooper had no legal basis for pulling over a Black woman he later arrested and has called for an internal police investigation, a newspaper reported Monday.
Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano dismissed all charges against Juanisha C. Brooks, according to the report in The Washington Post.
Brooks was pulled over by Virginia State Police Trooper Robert G. Hindenlang on March 6 while driving home on the Capital Beltway. According to the report, a dashboard-camera video from Hindenlang’s car shows Brooks repeatedly asking why she was pulled over. Hindenlang only replies that if she steps outside her car, he will show her.
When Brooks tells Hindenlang she doesn’t want to get out, the trooper unlocks the car door and pulls her out while she asks him to stop, the video shows. The trooper pushes Brooks up against the car and handcuffs her.
“It wasn't until the handcuffs were on that he said that he stopped me because my tail lights were off and that I was only two car distances behind the car in front of me, and that he said that I tried to flee him because I didn't stop immediately on the ramp and kept going, he said I was trying to flee,” Brooks told WUSA9.
Brooks tells the officer she had one drink but refuses a sobriety test. Hindenlang tells her she is under arrest for driving under the influence and asks why her eyes were watery.
“Why were my eyes watering?” Brooks answers. “Because people are being shot by the police. I’m freaking nervous.”
Later at the Fairfax County jail, Brooks took a breathalyzer test twice that showed a 0.0 blood alcohol level, according to Brooks and her attorney, Patrick M. Blanch.
“When I blew 0.00 I thought OK, I'm going to be able to go, he arrested me for drunk driving, so I'll be free to leave, he made a mistake. Instead, he told me, I'm still going to charge you with other things,”
She was charged with resisting arrest, eluding police, failing to have headlights on, and reckless driving.
The stop and arrest were proper, state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told the Post. Hindenlang saw Brooks driving “without any headlights or taillights, tailgating other vehicles and making unsafe lane changes, which are indicators of an impaired driver and provided reasonable suspicion for the trooper to initiate a traffic stop,” Geller said.
Brooks was taken into custody “due to her persistent refusal to comply with the trooper’s requests” and because of the trooper’s suspicion that Brooks might have been driving under the influence, Geller said.
Brooks said that on the brightly lit road, she hadn’t noticed that she had forgotten to turn her headlights on.
A Virginia ban on pulling people over for dark taillights went into effect on March 1. The change was aimed at avoiding the type of pretextual traffic stops that can cause unnecessary conflict. Given the recent change, Descano said in a letter to police that “the stop was without proper legal basis,” and the “dashcam footage does not provide a factual basis to support the warrants.” He called for state police to conduct an internal investigation, the Post reported.
Brooks is a senior video producer for the Defense Department, where she has worked for eight years and has top-secret clearance.
“My whole livelihood was on the line,” Brooks said. “You can’t have any charges when you have a clearance.” The department questioned her about the arrest, she said.
“I just want the police who are sworn to protect, to just protect me,” Brooks said.
Hindenlang, 49, has been a state trooper for 24 years, Geller said. He did not respond to an email from the Post seeking comment and doesn’t have a voicemail or answering machine for the phone number under which he is listed.

Yes, Officer

Pairing: Frank Castle x Reader Words: 3k Summary: A traffic stop gone right? (Cop!Frank AU) Warnings: Unprotected sex, public sex, Frank in a uniform is a warning in and of itself.
Tagging: @sweetvengeancee @angelaiswriting @tiyetiye @titty-teetee @sgtbookybarnes @persephone-divine @ninjakittynight If you would like to be tagged in future works, let me know!
A/N: My first smut ya’ll, omg. Let me know what you think, and I hope you enjoy!
“Step out of the car, ma’am.” His voice was stern as he tapped your door once with his knuckles. You couldn’t see his eyes, the entire upper half of his face shrouded in darkness as he eased his considerable bulk away from your car, waiting. Expectant.
You sputtered in your seat, an icy bolt of panic going through you. Had you done something wrong? Was there an issue with your licence; had you managed to commit a crime without realizing? “I-I’m sorry, what?”
You still couldn’t see his face but his posture hardened, his head tilting minutely to the side and you could almost feel when he narrowed his eyes on you. “Are you questioning an officer?” His tone was softer than before, knowing the words alone were enough to make you comply with his wishes.
You couldn’t get your seatbelt off fast enough after that, scrambling out of the vehicle and wincing when your bare feet hit cold, sharp asphalt. You had kicked your heels off before you started driving and hadn’t bothered to put them back on. The three o’clock-in-the-morning air was cool around you, the satin of your dress chilled against your skin without the warmth of your heater.
You wished you could see his face, see his eyes. His jaw was harsh, looked strong enough to cut stone, and his mouth betrayed nothing of what he could be thinking. You swallowed, acutely aware of how much skin your dress showed, how underdressed you were in the face of his uniform.
It was the middle of the night and your head was spinning but you refused to lean against the car at your back, trying to convince yourself that you did, in fact, do nothing wrong.
As far as you knew.
As far as you knew your tail lights were working, along with your turn signals- which you had been using. Your tags were up to date, the car was very much your own. It wasn’t spewing smoke, there was no one in the trunk...
“Do you know why I pulled you over?”  His voice was deep, rattling through you and if you weren’t already shivering from the cold you’d surely shudder from it. You licked your lips, wracking your brain and coming up empty.
“No, Sir. I’m sorry, Sir,”  You stumbled over the words, mouth going dry. The street was all but deserted at this hour, heading away from the lights and glamour of the expensive side of town to your more modest, affordable apartment. You had gone to a party tonight, what kind you still weren’t exactly sure of -a friend had invited you as her plus one- but it had been a great networking opportunity for you and under other circumstances you were sure the dinner you had eaten would cost you half your rent.
“You were swerving.” Your brows rose, met in the middle. Were you? You had only two flutes of champagne and you had a full meal along with them... You didn’t THINK you were swerving, but it was so late and your eyes were getting tired now without the energy of the event, but…
You opened your mouth to argue when another car sped down the quiet street, its headlights briefly illuminating the officer’s face. You weren't so nervous that you didn’t notice how it made you weak in the knees, his eyes dark and glinting. An all too inappropriate curl of heat ignited in your belly at that short glimpse of him.
“That's impossible,” You meant to sound confident in your claim but your voice lacked any real teeth it might have prior to realizing the cop that pulled you over, probably trying to make his monthly quota, was as attractive as he was. You were disappointed in yourself; since when did you get this distracted by physical appearances?
You blamed lack of sleep and the feel of soft satin gliding across your skin when you crossed your arms in a futile attempt to protect yourself from him.
“Have you had anything to drink tonight, ma’am?”
“No, Sir,” The words were a knee jerk reaction to being accused of being drunk -which you weren’t- and three seconds later you realized your mistake. “Well, yes, but I wasn’t- I’m not-” The words shriveled and died in your throat, knowing how it must have sounded to him.
“I’m gonna need you to follow me back to the cruiser.” He turned without waiting for you to answer him, leaving you standing there in the cold, in the shadows between his headlights and the next streetlight.
You could only stare at his back, uncomfortable with how you noticed the way his shoulders stretched the fabric of his dark shirt, how you noticed the way he strode forward, all lazy power and confidence.
“Ma’am!” He sounded impatient now, barking at you from where he waited beside the vehicle. More panic skittered through you as you leaped into action, hurrying over to him. Your feet were going to be black and you could feel gravel digging into the soft skin, but you didn’t dare make him wait for you to put your shoes back on.
His police lights were still flashing, painting his face in red and blue now that he was close enough. You almost preferred when you couldn’t see his face. The lights only accentuated the angles and the small cut on his cheek made him look brutal.
You felt short of breath when he reached into the car, trying not to wring your hands. You weren’t cold anymore, skin prickling with goosebumps that didn’t have anything to do with the temperature.
You fought the urge to step back when he emerged again, a small device in his large hand. You recognized what it must be, your stomach dropping in the same instant. Your mind went back to the champagne you had drunk earlier in the evening, wondering how much was still in your system, wondering if it was enough.
His eyebrows raised, standing in front of you and holding the device level with his chest. He didn’t move or gesture to hand the breathalyzer over so you could it yourself, making it abundantly clear that he expected you to lean in.
Something in the air shifted then, what that thing was you weren’t sure, but you could feel it like a physical presence. The atmosphere around you thickened and swelled, heating. Arousal started to climb through your belly, licking up your spine. You didn’t know what was going on at this point, but any pretense of this remaining a regular traffic stop was rapidly fading away.
“Blow,” The order was quiet and did nothing to calm your nerves or quell the blood rushing in your ears. You swallowed, licked your lips. Leaned forward.
You wrapped your lips around the cold plastic of the mouthpiece, your cheeks warming as you blew a shaky breath into the machine, feeling the officer’s eyes on you the entire time.  This close to him you could smell his cologne, mixing with the fresh laundry scent of his uniform and going straight to your head.
You straightened after a few seconds too long, your earlier worries coming back only as a dim flicker as he read the number on the screen. He hummed once, tossing the breathalyzer into the front seat and hooking his thumbs into his belt loops as he looked at you.
He sucked his bottom lip for a moment, considering. “Do you know how fast you were going?” The question itself was innocuous enough, one you’ve heard countless times over the years in movies and TV and whatever else. But it was the way which he said it that set off the butterflies in your stomach.
You knew you weren’t speeding enough to warrant a real, bonafide ticket, and so did he. He had to have known that you were aware you weren’t doing anything wrong, that you knew he was playing some game.
There was an expression on his face that you couldn’t place and your skin felt hot and prickly. It had been ages since the last car had passed and there on the side of the street in the glow of the police lights, it felt like you two were the last people on earth.
“Yes, Sir,” Your voice was breathy now, softer. Made it abundantly clear that you were answering an entirely different question.
The officer rolled his tongue over his teeth, his lips almost smiling. The tension that had been building between you started bending under the weight of the night, splintering the longer you looked at each other.  He knew this was a bad idea; hell, he could lose his badge if someone found out and got a burr up their ass about it. But it was the middle of the night, the street was quiet, and you were looking at him with the same hunger that’d been eating him up since you stepped out of your car.
In the end, he wasn’t sure who moved first and with the way your fingers were curling into his shirt to pull him closer, he didn’t really care.
And neither did you, with your back pressed against the metal of his cruiser and a stranger’s tongue down your throat. Your adrenaline spiked and you felt a flush crawling up your neck, burning into your cheeks.
Any thoughts of decency fled from your mind when he pressed you further into the car, swallowing your sigh. You could feel his large hands gripping at your waist and hips and crushing the satin of your dress in his palms. Later you’d be a little upset over the wrinkles and the dollars that would be spent to dry clean them out, but right now? Right now the only thing you wanted was more of his lips, his mouth on your skin, the way his hands clutched and pulled the same way yours were at him.
His mouth drifted from your own and you weren’t able to stop the small whine that left you at the chill that took its place, feeling his chuckle against your throat more than hearing it.
Maybe you would feel more embarrassed -more self conscious- if it was daylight. Maybe you wouldn’t have met him halfway when he leaned in, wouldn’t have been so eagerly clutching at the officer’s broad shoulders. Wouldn’t be running your hands down the front of his chest the best you could with him so close.
There was something about the shadows, the way they wrapped around the two of you, that made you both braver than usual, more reckless. The night swallowed up every sound, every whimper, in a way that the daylight never could- without judgement.
The pain in your feet, the asphalt dust and gravel, was forgotten; traded instead for pleasure. He’d gotten his hands underneath your dress and the scrape of his calluses over your thighs had you shuddering his arms.
“Frank,” The name was mumbled against the hollow of your throat somewhere between sucking tiny hickies into the tender skin of your neck that you’d have to hide later, his voice thick and so rough that it sent a bolt of electricity straight to your core.
It took a moment to process what he was telling you, too caught up in the way he had fit his hands under the curve of your knee, trying to hike your leg around his hips and grunting frustratedly when the cut of your dress prevented the action. You moaned sympathetically, curling your fingers into his short hair the best you could to pull him back for another hungry kiss.
Of course it was then that your brain clicked back into gear, nearly the same moment he licked into your mouth. Before you could lose the thought you pulled back just long enough to huff your name against his lips, the tips of your ears burning at the officer’s -Frank’s- rumbled “pleasure to meet you.”
The sudden chill against your skin was your only warning before he hoisted you up, your dress hastily pushed over your hips and your ankles locking at the small of his back. The thin strap of your dress slipped down your shoulder and he threw his weight into his hips, pinning you in place in the most delicious way.
He ducked his head to lave at your nipple through your dress, a shuddering gasp that might have been his name leaving you at the warm, wet contact. The friction the satin provided was just enough to make you squirm in place, thighs squeezing his waist. His hands shifted, one reaching up to cup your neglected breast and squeezed just this side of rough. He pinched and rolled your nipple between his thumb and forefinger before getting impatient and tugging your dress down, further exposing you to the night air.
Your hands grasped fruitlessly at his shoulders, the smooth fabric of his shirt offering no real purchase so you settled for gripping his collar to pull him closer, running the nails of your free hand lightly over his scalp. His groan vibrated through you and you whined, the ache between your legs almost unbearable now.
He kissed across your chest, leaving marks in his wake to match those on your neck before he latched onto your bare nipple, rolling the sensitive flesh against his tongue and catching it with his teeth. You were so distracted by the feel of his mouth on your skin without anything in the way that you hardly noticed the way his hand was sliding between your legs.
He pulled his mouth away from you with a pop, watching you with blown out pupils; your kiss-swollen lips, your mussed hair. The way your eyes, hazed with lust, fluttered open to look at him questioningly.
His lips twitched into a half grin at how wrecked you already looked against his cruiser, impatiently pulling at his collar. “Relax,” He husked next to your ear, one breath away from chuckling at the way you shuddered, hips bucking.
He pushed your panties to the side (thankfully. They were one of your favorite pairs and if he had ripped them you might’ve strangled him with his own tie after you came to your senses.) and ran a finger through your slick, his thumb settling into place on your clit and rubbing tight circles into it. Your skin prickled and your fingers tightening on his collar, your mouth dropping open.
He pumped a thick finger into your heat and you struggled to keep your eyes open against the pleasure that was coursing through your veins, transfixed by the way his jaw clenched. You reached down to fumble with his belt buckle, only to become distracted and take a detour when your fingertips brushed against the bulge in his slacks. Returning the favor he was giving you and unable to help yourself regardless you palmed his cock, slowly rubbing your hand along the length of it. You weren’t able to stop yourself from grinning either when he tensed, feeling victorious.
Utterly disregarding the fact that the two of you were still on the side of the road where anyone could come driving by, you continued to explore at your leisure. He was hot in your hand as you stroked him, even through the layers of clothing and proportionate to the big body you’d been admiring since he pulled you over; your mouth might have even watered.
His hand stuttered and stalled against your overheated flesh, a grunt falling from his lips. He let you play though, hips pushing forward for more of your touch. Another finger slotted itself within you and you could already feel your walls stretching to accommodate just those two digits. That hint of discomfort compounded on top of the molten desire until it threatened to spill over entirely.
You sighed- a high, whiny sound that seemed so distant, so foreign, to your own ears when he refused to move them.  Just as you teased, so did he; no longer applying pressure to where you needed it most and instead lightly tracing around your bundle of nerves, barely grazing it.
Your hands were trembling when you went for his buckle again, feeling like you might die if he didn’t fuck you right there against his cruiser. You could barely see what you were doing with the police lights casting frantic, flickering shadows across the two of you and him kissing up your neck, nipping your swollen bottom lip. You unzipped his pants, pushing your hand inside and underneath his underwear to finally be able to feel the weight of his bare cock in your hand.
There was precum oozing from the tip and you swiped your thumb through it, smearing it along the flushed head as you began to pump him. He took his fingers from you, leaving you uncomfortably empty in order to push your hand away from him.
“Enough of that,” The roughness of his voice was enough to make you squirm but you listened, trying to bite back the moan that was rising in your throat. His tip bumped against your sodden folds and you couldn’t hold your voice any longer, crying out into the night as he worked himself into you.
A sheen of sweat glistened off your skin, the former chill of the night all but lost on you in favor of how he surged between your thighs. He shoved you harder against the cruiser and your breath whooshed past your lips, panting into his mouth. His belt bit into the soft skin of your inner thighs and his pants chafed. You loved every second of it.
There was little you could do except hold on for the ride and kiss him back so fervently that your teeth clacked together. His cock stroked along your walls, sending currents of electrifying pleasure through you with every thrust. Your nails slipped across his shoulders and down his back, hands fisting in his perfect navy uniform.
He tore his mouth away to mutter filthy praise in your ear, grunting under his breath. “That’s it,” He said, feeling you start to quiver and shake around him after a particularly harsh thrust. “So good. I can feel you squeezing me,” The tips of your ears burned but he didn’t stop, continuing, “Gonna cum for me, pretty girl?”
His words only drove you higher, the coil in your belly tightening as it went on and on. You could taste your orgasm rising in the back of your throat, sweet and hot, but as much as you wanted it you tried to hold it off. You wanted whatever this was not to end even more.
But then he gripped you tighter, shifted his hips until his pubic bone bumped into your clit with every thrust and it was all you could do not to scream. That bubble of pleasure rose and swelled within you, trembling in place for what seemed like ages before it finally burst.
You jerked against him, mouth opening in a keening moan as you melted down, nerve endings sizzling and sparking. He fucked you through it, refusing to let you calm down, not when you were shaking so deliciously in his arms, cries and whimpers falling from your plush lips.
“Attagirl,” He praised, lips pulling into a smug grin when he felt you squirm, gasping, at the word.
He wasn't able to stand it for much longer, spilling into you with a long, growling sort of groan. You held him close, the hairs on the back of your neck standing up and your eyes rolling back at the feeling of that thick heat flooding into you.
The two of you said nothing as you caught your breath, leaning against the other and trying to stop your bodies from shaking in the aftermath. Little by little your common sense started to return to you, about the same time that Frank pulled out and left you achingly empty. You felt your cheeks heat with embarrassment at the thought of what you’d just done- had someone seen you? You hadn’t heard any cars go by but then again you weren’t exactly paying attention to anything but the man in front of you, so who could say?
Nervous laughter bubbled up and you slapped you hand over your mouth, only to almost lose your balance when he carefully placed you back onto the ground, thighs protesting. You caught yourself with the officer’s body, fingers digging into firm biceps. He looked at you with amusement, almost bashfully, hardly believing what had just taken place himself. His hands were gentle as they smoothed down your dress, lingering in places. You tucked him into his slacks, murmuring a “sorry,” when he winced, still sensitive.
You deliberately avoided looking at his face, instead busying yourself with redoing his belt. Your fingers were clumsy and you’d only just gotten it together when you felt a finger underneath your chin, urging you to look up. When you did his lips were on yours, moving together languidly. You let out a slow breath through your nose, your nerves quieting. You held onto his belt and he slid the strap of your dress back onto your shoulder.
You needed a shower- you could feel his cum drying on the insides of your thighs where it had oozed out of you- and you’d ache in the morning, but you thought this moment was worth the fleeting discomfort.
He walked you back to his car and the two of you stole glances at each other, neither quite knowing what to say. “I know we’re strangers but we just fucked on the side of the road and it was great, would you like to get some coffee?” wasn’t exactly what Frank had in mind when the thought to ask you on a date rose up in his mind.
“Get home safe, okay?” His voice felt rough in his throat as he stood beside your door and he caught your arm at the last moment before you slid into your car, pulling you to him for one last kiss that had you melting.
When you finally sat back down in your car you couldn’t stop yourself from looking in your rear view mirror, watching him walk away. Laughter fell from your mouth yet again without the distraction of his lips. You’d have to thank your friend again the next time you spoke, wondering if you’d be able to get through that conversation without wanting the ground to swallow you up whole out of sheer embarrassment.
You bit your lip, trying not to smile when you turned your key and your car grumbled back to life. You took one last look at him; seeing how he filled up the small cab and remembering how he felt. The way he moved, the noises he made.
You would get her flowers, you decided. Flowers and maybe some chocolate as a thank you.

A large company which I am legally not allowed to name but has offices in LA and NYC recently did this to their employees without telling them. It came up very casually at a large company tele-meeting with execs - whoever mentioned it basically did it in passing as they discussed workplace culture and the rise of people WFH and how the company is pivoting to support employee preferences while still having people in the office for things they felt should be in person.
Fam, the other execs were horrified. They derailed the entire all-company meeting to discuss this for like 10 min and then brought it up again at a breakout meeting for another 30. It's worth mentioning that this is an exceptionally racially diverse exec team; the regional manager is a Black woman, the head of NYC HQ is a Black man, I saw a number of non-white folks. (It's a sport-adjacent company so nobody is fat or visibly disabled, and this very important meeting happened during Rosh Hashana so they must not have any Jews on their team as that's a dick move.) Anyway, the reason cited for heat mapping was to figure out where people are spending time in the building, supposedly related to a new HQ being built. They want to make sure the new building is creating spaces employees will actually use. I actually don't think this is an awful idea, and everyone has to scan their badge for building entry so they're already tracking who's onsite and who isn't, and when. But you can't do that shit without telling people. Everyone felt violated, even though theoretically this data can't be aggregated by any identifying information. It's such a small step from heat mapping to following your badge through the building and making you tap into use the coffee machine, or I'm reminded of the tech company working on a blood-alcohol sensing steering wheel (to eliminate the breathalyzer install safety concerns for folks with a DUI) and in the article the person being interviewed was so excited about the option to just install this as a "safety feature" in every single new car and truck to be built.
Surveillance culture is terrifying.
"Don't spy on a privacy lab" (and other career advice for university provosts)
Tumblr media
This is a wild and hopeful story: grad students at Northeastern successfully pushed back against invasive digital surveillance in their workplace, through solidarity, fearlessness, and the bright light of publicity. It’s a tale of hand-to-hand, victorious combat with the “shitty technology adoption curve.”
What’s the “shitty tech adoption curve?” It’s the process by which oppressive technologies are normalized and spread. If you want to do something awful with tech — say, spy on people with a camera 24/7 — you need to start with the people who have the least social capital, the people whose objections are easily silenced or overridden.
That’s why all our worst technologies are first imposed on refugees -> prisoners -> kids -> mental patients -> poor people, etc. Then, these technologies climb the privilege gradient: blue collar workers -> white collar workers -> everyone. Following this pathway lets shitty tech peddlers knock the rough edges off their wares, inuring us all to their shock and offense.
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/21/great-taylors-ghost/#solidarity-or-bust
20 years ago, if you ate dinner under the unblinking eye of a CCTV, it was because you were housed in a supermax prison. Today, it’s because you were unwise enough to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for “home automation” from Google, Apple, Amazon or another “luxury surveillance” vendor.
Northeastern’s Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex (ISEC) is home to the “Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute,” where grad students study the harms of surveillance and the means by which they may be reversed. If there’s one group of people who are prepared to stand athwart the shitty tech adoption curve, it is the CPI grad students.
Which makes it genuinely baffling that Northeastern Senior Vice Provost for Research David Luzzi decided to install under-desk heat sensors throughout ISEC, overnight, without notice or consultation. Luzzi signed the paperwork that brought the privacy institute into being.
Students throughout ISEC were alarmed by this move, but especially students on the sixth floor, home to the Privacy Institute. When they demanded an explanation, they were told that the university was conducting a study on “desk usage.” This rang hollow: students at the Privacy Institute have assigned desks, and they badge into each room when they enter it.
As Privacy Institute PhD candidate Max von Hippel wrote, “Reader, we have assigned desks, and we use a key-card to get into the room, so, they already know how and when we use our desks.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578048837746204672
So why was the university suddenly so interested in gathering fine-grained data on desk usage? I asked von Hippel and he told me: “They are proposing that grad students share desks, taking turns with a scheduling web-app, so administrators can take over some of the space currently used by grad students. Because as you know, research always works best when you have to schedule your thinking time.”
That’s von Hippel’s theory, and I’m going to go with it, because Luzzi didn’t offer a better one in the flurry of memos and “listening sessions” that took place after the ISEC students arrived at work one morning to discover sensors under their desks.
This is documented in often hilarious detail in von Hippel’s thread on the scandal, in which the university administrators commit a series of unforced errors and the grad students run circles around them, in a comedy of errors straight out of “Animal House.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578048652215431168
After the sensors were discovered, the students wrote to the administrators demanding their removal, on the grounds that there was no scientific purpose for them, that they intimidated students, that they were unnecessary, and that the university had failed to follow its own rules and ask the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to review the move as a human-subjects experiment.
The letter was delivered to Luzzi, who offered “an impromptu listening session” in which he alienated students by saying that if they trusted the university to “give” them a degree, they should trust it to surveil them. The students bristled at this characterization, noting that students deliver research (and grant money) to “make it tick.”
Tumblr media
[Image ID: Sensors arrayed around a kitchen table at ISEC]
The students, believing Luzzi was not taking them seriously, unilaterally removed all the sensors, and stuck them to their kitchen table, annotating and decorating them with Sharpie. This prompted a second, scheduled “listening session” with Luzzi, but this session, while open to all students, was only announced to their professors (“Beware of the leopard”).
The students got wind of this, printed up fliers and made sure everyone knew about it. The meeting was packed. Luzzi explained to students that he didn’t need IRB approval for his sensors because they weren’t “monitoring people.” A student countered, what was being monitored, “if not people?” Luzzi replied that he was monitoring “heat sources.”
https://github.com/maxvonhippel/isec-sensors-scandal/blob/main/Oct_6_2022_Luzzi_town_hall.pdf
Remember, these are grad students. They asked the obvious question: which heat sources are under desks, if not humans (von Hippel: “rats or kangaroos?”). Luzzi fumbled for a while (“a service animal or something”) before admitting, “I guess, yeah, it’s a human.”
Having yielded the point, Luzzi pivoted, insisting that there was no privacy interest in the data, because “no individual data goes back to the server.” But these aren’t just grad students — they’re grad students who specialize in digital privacy. Few people on earth are better equipped to understand re-identification and de-aggregation attacks.
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A window with a phrase written in marker, ‘We are not doing science here’ -Luzzi.]
A student told Luzzi, “This doesn’t matter. You are monitoring us, and collecting data for science.” Luzzi shot back, “we are not doing science here.” This ill-considered remark turned into an on-campus meme. I’m sure it was just blurted in the heat of the moment, but wow, was that the wrong thing to tell a bunch of angry scientists.
From the transcript, it’s clear that this is where Luzzi lost the crowd. He accused the students of “feeling emotion” and explaining that the data would be used for “different kinds of research. We want to see how students move around the lab.”
Now, as it happens, ISEC has an IoT lab where they take these kinds of measurements. When they do those experiments, students are required to go through IRB, get informed consent, all the stuff that Luzzi had bypassed. When this is pointed out, Luzzi says that they had been given an IRB waiver by the university’s Human Research Protection Program (HRPP).
Now a prof gets in on the action, asking, pointedly: “Is the only reason it doesn’t fall under IRB is that the data will not be published?” A student followed up by asking how the university could justify blowing $50,000 on surveillance gear when that money would have paid for a whole grad student stipend with money left over.
Luzzi’s answers veer into the surreal here. He points out that if he had to hire someone to monitor the students’ use of their desks, it would cost more than $50k, implying that the bill for the sensors represents a cost-savings. A student replies with the obvious rejoinder — just don’t monitor desk usage, then.
Finally, Luzzi started to hint at the underlying rationale for the sensors, discussing the cost of the facility to the university and dangling the possibility of improving utilization of “research assets.” A student replies, “If you want to understand how research is done, don’t piss off everyone in this building.”
Now that they have at least a vague explanation for what research question Luzzi is trying to answer, the students tear into his study design, explaining why he won’t learn what he’s hoping to learn. It’s really quite a good experimental design critique — these are good students! Within a few volleys, they’re pointing out how these sensors could be used to stalk researchers and put them in physical danger.
Luzzi turns the session over to an outside expert via a buggy Zoom connection that didn’t work. Finally, a student asks whether it’s possible that this meeting could lead to them having a desk without a sensor under it. Luzzi points out that their desk currently doesn’t have a sensor (remember, the students ripped them out). The student says, “I assume you’ll put one back.”
Tumblr media
[Image ID: A ‘public art piece’ in the ISEC lobby — a table covered in sensors spelling out ‘NO!,’ surrounded by Sharpie annotations decrying the program.]
They run out of time and the meeting breaks up. Following this, the students arrange the sensors into a “public art piece” in the lobby — a table covered in sensors spelling out “NO!,” surrounded by Sharpie annotations decrying the program.
Meanwhile, students are still furious. It’s not just that the sensors are invasive, nor that they are scientifically incoherent, nor that they cost more than a year’s salary — they also emit lots of RF noise that interferes with the students’ own research. The discussion spills onto Reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NEU/comments/xx7d7p/northeastern_graduate_students_privacy_is_being/
Yesterday, Luzzi capitulated, circulating a memo saying they would pull “all the desk occupancy sensors from the building,” due to “concerns voiced by a population of graduate students.”
https://twitter.com/maxvonhippel/status/1578101964960776192
The shitty technology adoption curve is relentless, but you can’t skip a step! Jumping straight to grad students (in a privacy lab) without first normalizing them by sticking them on the desks of poor kids in underfunded schools (perhaps after first laying off a computer science teacher to free up the budget!) was a huge tactical error.
A more tactically sound version of this is currently unfolding at CMU Computer Science, where grad students have found their offices bugged with sensors that detect movement and collect sound:
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387909329710366721
The CMU administration has wisely blamed the presence of these devices on the need to discipline low-waged cleaning staff by checking whether they’re really vacuuming the offices.
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387426812972646403
While it’s easier to put cleaners under digital surveillance than computer scientists, trying to do both at once is definitely a boss-level challenge. You might run into a scholar like David Gray Widder, who, observing that “this seems like algorithmic management of lowly paid employees to me,” unplugged the sensor in his office.
https://twitter.com/davidthewid/status/1387909329710366721
This is the kind of full-stack Luddism this present moment needs. These researchers aren’t opposed to sensors — they’re challenging the social relations of sensors, who gets sensed and who does the sensing.
https://locusmag.com/2022/01/cory-doctorow-science-fiction-is-a-luddite-literature/
[Image ID: A flier inviting ISEC grad students to attend an unadvertised ‘listening session’ with vice-provost David Luzzi. It is surmounted with a sensor that has been removed from beneath a desk and annotated in Sharpie to read: ‘If found by David Luzzi suck it.’]

Everything You Want To Know About Interlock Breathalyzer
A portable ignition interlock system California (IID) checks the user's breath for the presence of alcohol before allowing the vehicle to start. After being convicted of a drunk driving charge, it is sometimes mandatory to have one installed (DUI, DWI, DUI, OWI, or OVI).
An interlock device is a breathalyzer installed in a car that will not allow the engine to start until the driver has passed an alcohol breath test. Ignition interlock devices are sometimes known as "in-vehicle breathalyzers," "car interlocks," and "blow and go" devices. However, this is not their correct name.
Instructions for Operating an Ignition Interlock Device
Breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) detectors may employ many techniques, depending on their specific make and model.
The three-punch combo
The user must blow into the automobile breathalyzer mouthpiece for many seconds without taking a breath, then take a deep breath and repeat the process. This test is the most reliable, and it's also the simplest to implement.
Aiming for the Gut
It needs a lot of effort from the user and is less reliable than other breathalyzers because of the force needed to get a breathalyzer reading.
A Hum and a Blow
Blowing and humming into the mouthpiece is required to unlock the device. However, this isn't easy to perfect and keeps many customers locked out needlessly.
Most interlock breathalyzer california look somewhat similar, while some are more intuitive to operate. For example, intoxalock devices offer a single activation button, so drivers don't have to read the device for random retests.
How Does It Work?
When the auto breathalyzer is fitted, drivers blow through the mouthpiece to deliver a breath sample. The instrument accurately measures BrAC below the permissible level. If the driver's blood-alcohol level is below the legal limit (usually.02), they are allowed to turn the key and start the vehicle.
Pick Carefully
There are factors to keep in mind while selecting an interlock service:
Facilitated usage
To do well on exams, you must blow a certain way. Our interlock device makes things as simple as they can be. To get an accurate reading, you should blow into the machine. There are no complex inhalation-exhalation blow patterns to remember.
Size suitable for discretion
Our interlock device is the smallest on the market, making it ideal for covert use.
Failure to provide a working sample will prevent the device from starting but be assured it will be unable to stop your automobile once it is in motion. No ignition interlock device will be able to stop your car after it has been started.
To what extent will I be subject to installing an ignition interlock device?
Each state has its ignition interlock statute that specifies when the device must be placed, how long it must be installed, what kind of device is required, and whose monitoring authority (probation officer, court, DMV, DOT, etc.) will supervise your IID obligation. Intoxalock employs state experts who are familiar with your state's specific requirements and can help you get your license reinstated.
After you have finished your IID obligation, you may have your license back and the device removed. Different states have different removal procedures; some need you to contact your monitoring authority, while others have you contact your DOT to find out when you'll be eligible to leave.
In Conclusion
Some states provide medical exemptions for those whose health prevents them from utilizing the ignition interlock device required by the court. Suppose you cannot produce an accurate breath sample for the ignition interlock device to read. In that case, you will need to consult with a lawyer or public defender, acquire a medical health expert to assess your ability, and fill out documentation.

U.S. Breath Analyzers Market Driven By Rising Alcohol Abuse | CAGR Of 15.4%
The U.S. breath analyzers market size is expected to reach USD 3.1 billion by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 15.4% from 2022 to 2030. Growing demand for breath analyzers from law enforcement agencies and other institutions such as schools, sports, and offices to minimize alcohol abuse is a major market driver. Early diagnosis of diseases such as cancer, tuberculosis, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) plays a key role in the success rate of their treatment. Breath analyzers offer a quick primary diagnosis based on exhaled air contents.
Gain deeper insights on the market and receive your free copy with TOC now @: U.S. Breath Analyzers Market Report
Growing applications in private use such as measurement of breath Carbon Monoxide (CO) in smoking cessation activities are expected to boost market growth during the forecast period. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the breathalyzer market experienced a downturn as most commercial activities were halted. Owing to a close in production units and an interruption in the supply chain, most main revenue-generating end-users of the market were impacted, resulting reduction in sales of breath analyzers. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought about a series of changes across industries.
For instance, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that in the future new cars will be equipped with alcohol-sensing start buttons, which will prevent them from moving if it detects alcohol. Hence, it is expected that the market will witness the introduction of novel, innovative technologies, and new product launches during the forecast period, in turn, positively impacting growth. The growing prevalence of noncommunicable illnesses, along with the high rate of infectious diseases, is driving the double disease burden across the world. Hence, there is a significant demand for cheap, accessible, and ruggedized diagnostic tools that detect diseases early and direct patients to the right treatment channels. Furthermore, the growing number of road accidents due to drunk driving and drug abuse has augmented the demand for breath analyzers, as these devices help monitor the presence of different compounds and measure the blood alcohol content in a breath sample. Sometimes breath analyzers provide inaccurate results, failing to differentiate alcohol from any other chemical compound that holds a methyl group structure. Some alcohol testing machines recognize not only ethyl alcohol but also any compound with a similar molecular structure. Thus, accuracy concerns pertaining to breath analyzers are expected to limit market growth.

Speed Trap: Part II
[Start]
Only warning for this chapter is that impersonating an officer is a serious crime. Also Taako is an absolute hypocrite.
It was almost too easy to take one of Lup’s old uniforms from the washing machine. Transforming his car wasn’t even much of a challenge- Magnus owed him a favor after Taako’s starring role in a TV ad doubled the business to his tiny repair shop. Now Taako had lights and sirens at the flick of a switch, but otherwise his car looked the same. The distance and time travelled of other cars were easy enough to calculate into a speed and Taako had the entire police handbook memorized. Everything was good to go.
He left early the next morning again, changing in the back of his car before sitting on the side of the road. Just after rush hour and someone flew by him, easily hitting a hundred. Taako raced after the other driver but his hand hesitated over the switch. Was he really going to do this?
Well, it was this or having Lup find out he lied to her and still couldn’t afford rent this month. The choice was clear.
His siren blared and the other car slowed to a stop on the side of the otherwise empty highway. Taako sat for a bit, telling himself it was to let the other driver feel the heat a little, when really he was the one sweating. Pulling off this act was going to be the hardest part, but at least he wouldn’t be dumb enough to use an accent.
“Ma’am, do you have any idea how fast you were going?”
The short woman looked absolutely panicked, eyes wide and a mess of curly hair. Taako kind of felt bad, but then she started talking. “Oh Officer, I am so so sorry, but I’m so late! Please, I really don’t have time for a ticket but I swear I won’t-“
Taako held up a hand to stop her and she immediately fell quiet. He was glad he’d snagged these wide sunglasses from the mall to hide how wide his eyes went. Sure, he needed the cash, but the power trip from this was a very nice bonus.
“Ma’am, I really don’t have time for every sob story, I think you know that.”
She sighed. “Yeah I know. I just. I have a date and she’s. She’s something else but I got the time messed up and I don’t want her to think I stood her up and my phone has no battery-“
“Jeez, lady okay,” he didn’t want to keep her much longer, “I can let you go without the ticket but think you can, ya know, donate a little something to the Officers’ Holiday Fund?”
She squinted at him. “It’s September.”
“We like to start early. Now you want a ticket or what?”
And just like that, half his debt was paid.
The next speeding car followed not long after. The man was gruff looking and had his heater running, despite the warm fall weather. Taako felt like fire was licking at his face when the window rolled down.
“Sir, do you know how fast you were going?”
“Yeah yeah,” he grumbled, “how much is it going to be?”
Well, this was easier. Taako leaned on the edge of the window and immediately flinched back from the hot metal. “Gonna probably run you close to five hundred, Sir. Going triple digits on this road is pretty bad.”
The man groaned. But Taako continued. “I’ll let you in a secret, though. It’s five hundred if you pay with a check through the mail, processing fees and all. If you’ve got half that in cash on you now, I’ll write it down on my notes here and you’ll be good to go.”
“Really?” The man brightened, already reaching into his back pocket.
“Yup,” Taako grinned. This was even easier than he thought it’d be.
By the end of the week, he made enough money to pay rent for the next three months. Before he realized it, months had passed, yet everything was still flawless. Lup didn’t suspect a thing, Taako was rolling in cash, and no one was getting hurt. The people he was pulling over didn’t need the money like he did- not when they carried so much cash and drove such nice cars. When someone couldn’t pay, he reduced the fee with a wink and a warning. He made his own hours, took days off whenever he wanted, never had anyone to yell at him for being late or taking a smoke break. Honestly, Taako was sure he could do this for the rest of his life- no one was going to on the lookout for a fake cop.
But then it was ten o’clock in the morning and someone was swerving down his stretch of highway. Taako hesitated. Sure, he could probably make a pretty penny off the drunk driver, but the idea of letting them go when he was done felt truly criminal. It wasn’t like Taako could actually make an arrest though. Still, maybe he’d figure out what to do by the time the driver pulled over. He turned on the siren and followed, watching as they clumsily pulled over.
“Good morning, sir. Think you’re in the right state of mind to be driving right now?”
The man behind the wheel grinned up at him. Taako didn’t need a breathalyzer, he could smell the gin on his guy before he rolled down the window. “Officer! Darling, I love your cadence, where you from?”
Taako rolled his eyes. What was wrong with this guy? He was being pulled over for drunk driving and he was hitting on the officer? Taako sighed. “Look, I’ve got a long day ahead of me, why don’t you give me your license and registration?”
The man produced the papers and Taako memorized the information before handing it back.
“I’m not in trouble, am I?” Brian, if the name on the license was accurate, leered at him, leaning on the edge of the window. “Officer, keep this between us and I can make it worth your while?”
Taako raised a brow, even as he was reaching for his phone. Brain didn’t elaborate, but he did reach out and slip a wad of bills in the front pocket of Taako’s borrowed uniform. He took a deep breath, needing every second of the last weeks of this impossible con in order to keep a straight face.
“Yeah, Brain, that’s not really going to fly. I’m going to call some back up now.” He brought the phone to his ear, number already dialed. As expected, Brain cursed him out and drove off, but the cash remained in Taako’s pocket.
“911, what’s your emergency?” Taako had met Ren the dispatcher a few times. She was good at what she did, but she also heard a hundred different voices every day. All he had to do was jump up his pitch and she wouldn’t suspect a thing.
“Uh, like, hi? Look my friend and I kind of started partying too early but then he, like, drove off for no reason! I don’t want him to get hurt!”
“Alright, can you tell me where he was going?”
“His name is Brain and he’s driving a black Chevy Spark down Highway 609 just after exit 7, license plate S41D35”
“Oh, okay. Can I get your name and number in case we lose connection?”
“Gosh thanks so much, bye!!” And Taako hung up. He hid out at the nearest gas station, watching two squad cars race by not five minutes later.
[Part One] [Part Three]
Thanks for reading! Bonus points if you can guess which characters the other two drivers are based on. Check in tomorrow for part three!

The concept of the breathalyzer has been around since at least the 1930s, although it has changed forms and techniques since the advent of microelectronics. On top of that, most prosecutors will include other evidence in a drunk driving case, like finding out whether the defendant was at a bar and getting their receipts, searching their house or car for discarded containers, etc.
!
In 1931 the first practical roadside breath-testing device was the drunkometer developed by Rolla Neil Harger of the Indiana University School of Medicine. The drunkometer collected a motorist's breath sample directly into a balloon inside the machine.[7] The breath sample was then pumped through an acidified potassium permanganate solution. If there was alcohol in the breath sample, the solution changed color. The greater the color change, the more alcohol there was present in the breath.
the first drunk driving laws were in 1910 so theres still a 20 year gap but afaik driving wasnt common then. cool
Before breathalzyers and blood tests how did they like prosecute drunk driving. Was it just based on the cops like subjective perception
