Mari Vees took over the San Marino Seafood space (I’m surprised they closed) in downtown San Marino. It’s a breakfast lunch café (they close early) that serves American comfort food (think upscale diner) like egg dishes, French toast, pancakes, burgers, salads, tacos, etc. Breakfast and lunch are served all day. The coffee is from Caffe Luxxe.

Chocolate chunk pancakes with warm maple butter ($19): The pancakes are the first thing on the menu and many people order them. They’re available with blueberries, banana, or chocolate chunks. An order comes with three fluffy, handsome pancakes. The chocolate chunk pancakes had chocolate chunks on top and in the batter. The top of the stack was dusted with powdered sugar. The pancakes were very nice – light with crispy edges, not too sweet. It’s overpriced though. And they would have been better with buttermilk or something that added more flavor to the pancakes.

Coffee ($4): comes with refills, very bitter and dark, but stronger than your typical diner coffee

Street parking was easy to find. There’s an automatic gratuity of 18% for parties of five or more. I also noticed a sign that there’s a one hour limit. The food takes awhile, so this could be a challenge. The interior was dressed up a little with fake plants, but it isn’t that nice.

I’ve passed by Stamp Proper Foods so many times…always wondered about it and I finally went. It’s not as hip or bougie as I expected for a place in Los Feliz. The focus is on healthy food, including many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

Score: 35/50

Food: 4/5 – They have a case of pastries, including cookies, croissants, brownies, and banana bread. Some items are vegan, some gluten-free, some vegan and gluten-free. The menu includes waffles, French toast, pancakes, breakfast burritos, fancy toasts, omelettes, quesadillas, tacos, salads, wraps, sandwiches, soups, burgers, gluten-free pasta, and desserts. The vegan burrito was good but not special.

Coffee: 4/5 – There is a full espresso bar. They serve organic Groundworks Coffee. My drip coffee was bitter.

Wi-fi: 5/5 – Free, unlimited, password posted at the register.

Ambiance: 4/5 – Homey and cozy. Framed photos of Hollywood celebrities. The place is fairly large with indoor and outdoor seating.

Noise: 4/5 – Classic rock, pretty quiet

Plugs: 1/5 – Only saw one 

Parking: 2/5 – Tough to find. They have a parking lot but it’s valet only.

Comfort: 3/5 – Metal chairs weren’t padded. Some communal tables.

Bathroom: 5/5 – Two restrooms

Art: 4/5 – Some street art

Tips: Order at the counter. They’ll give you a number and bring your food to you.  They have stamp (frequent buyer) cards for coffee drinks. Happy hour with alcoholic drink specials is from 3 PM – 5:30 PM.

Clark Street Diner, 6145 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles (Hollywood), CA 90068

Respect for the old combined with some changes for the better…when Clark Street took over the iconic 101 Coffee Shop (formerly known as the Hollywood Hills Coffee Shop – featured in Swingers, Entourage), people were concerned that they’d make too many changes. Instead, they kept a lot of the décor, added some neon signs and plants, and kept the diner menu. It still feels like a diner for the 1960’s (complete with the counter seating, popcorn ceiling, tan leather booths, mirrors above the counter) but there are subtle changes. They added a La Marzocco espresso machine, hand whisk the matcha, and upgraded the ingredients. Clark Street’s pastries are on display in a case by the register  - including croissants, cookies, Swedish buns (love the cardamom buns), scones, Danish, etc.

The menu includes eggs, omelettes, corned beef hash, sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, French toast, salads, soup, sides, juice, coffee, ice cream, etc. Breakfast is served all day. They have a kid’s menu too.

Diner breakfast ($19): 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon, hash browns. The Sonora buttermilk pancakes were tender and fluffy and served with real maple syrup. The bacon was thick and not too salty – the good stuff. The scrambled eggs were surprisingly orange (must be quality, cage-free eggs), tender, and moist. The hash browns crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Everything was better than your typical diner food.

Coffee ($4): Decent and free refills

Matcha + chocolate croissant ($6): a circular croissant, light and delicate, not much matcha flavor though

Service was friendly and attentive. They kept the coffee and water refills coming. There’s often a wait on the weekends. They have free parking!
