Adventures in the Consumption of Bread (or, better known as BREADSTUCK)

WELCOME. To something that I’ve been looking forward to for a long, long time. It’s time. For Adventures in the Consumption of Bread.

Confused? You should be. This is probably the most Lovecraftian, “aware of the fact that it’s a SBURBventure and that other SBURBventures exist” Sburbventure out there, besides all the other ones we’ll talk about I guess.

What I mean by that, is that this showcases another useful tool to make your audience be compelled to read forward: understanding just what the heck is happening in the story’s structure. I guess you’re someone did that too, but listen. This one does that too, a lot.

Listen. There’s nothing quite like the fact of a Sburbventure straight up looking you dead in the eyes and going “you’ve seen this so many times by now, even the naming gag subversion has lost it’s luster.” And speaking as somebody who’s been reading a lot of Sburbventures up to this point. That’s refreshing. Listen, if you know me, you know that I like using the word “listen” at the start of sentences, and also that I like fourth wall breaking things.

If you have me confused, that’s a different emotion from being bored, is what I’m saying, and if I’m confused and intrigued about what I’m seeing, and what to understand what it is I’m seeing, that’s going to be a compelling force for your Fanadventure.

Ah, but I hear the voices cry out from the void, WHY OH WHY IS THIS NAMED BREADSTUCK? Because. Because for some odd, inexplicable reason, TWO audience members tried to make Ellie (the main character) EAT BREAD. One is nothing. Two is a coincidence. Naming your whole fanadventure after that fact? Well. That’s. Uh. I guess a pattern? Or significant, in any case.

There’s a kind of creative flurry that only comes when you’re kind of new to the whole “making a comic thing” and I think that shines through here. I think that kind of creative flurry can be sometimes misaimed, but only if you try to limit it through like, familiar forms. If you decide, you know what, just make it inscrutable and meta and all this kind of stuff will fall into place and change the artstyle every few seconds…well. Then we have something interesting on our hands. There’s a passion in it, is what I’m saying, and if there’s anything I like on this weird review/note dump/strange trip through time blog, it’s sincerity and passion. Those things always make things interesting. (Also when the story does stabilize from the flights of fancy into something a little more coherent, like this fanadventure eventually does, it’s a joy to behold.)

Children of the Gun

Back-to-back Non-MSPA webcomics? What is this, 2010???????? Also this one looks like it’s certainly going to be interesting, even if I turn out not to like it at all. I mean, it’s called *Children of the Gun*. It’s got twenty different NSFW warnings on the title page alone, and those chapter selects(!!!!!!!!) titles are giving off some weird vibes alone. Suffice to say, I’m in for it now.

OH and we have alt text but it’s different from, like, accessibility alt-text. No, this kind of alt-text is the kind that tricksters use to hide additional information. That’s a really good sign in my books. Leave me confused about what the heck “don’t blame yourself” means…I love it when the website turns out to be a machine, a contraption of some sort, that you have to know how to operate to get the story out of it. (gestures over to In A Bright Room, the most normalest of MSPFAs).

Oh. This starting prose on the first “non-prologue” screen…it feels poetic. The way that words are spliced together. The sentences fragmenting. Kind of like what I’m doing now. Except better suited to setting a mood. Of being fraught with Turmoil. You get it.

Okay yeah, the atmosphere in this one is OFF THE CHARTS. I’m beginning to realize that that’s a good way to get me invested in the action, isn’t it? Which makes sense, because if I don’t know what’s coming next, I’ll be more invested and incentivized to turn the page, pour over every word, trying to figure out what it is I’m even looking at. Again, I talked about this during my Adventures in the Consumptions of Bread (aka Breadstuck) review, so I won’t repeat myself too deeply. And also I guess that’s why the Horror Comics, despite my aversion to horror, tend to get my attention the most? Because Horror is nothing without atmosphere, at least in my opinion.

And because it is quickly coming to my attention just how much of this comic is, in fact, based in the roots of Horror and how much it wants to make me uncomfortable, I have to ask myself the same question I always do when reading horror MSPFAs, which is: is it worth continuing? That is, is it worth becoming uncomfortable so that I can continue the story? Because at this point, I’m willing to say that this is a pretty well-made comic and anybody who is even remotely interested in a unique, dark atmosphere of dread and gloom should check it out, if they want to. But do *I* want to continue with it? I think the fact that I’m stopping this review to ask myself these questions is indication enough that I don’t think I will, but I will say, absolutely, that if the story is where I think it’s going, then please mind the tags at the beginning, because they are ABSOLUTELY there for a reason. But if you read the tags and you DO think you’re interested in this one, please, check it out. It’s really something.

The Midnight Crew have some of the silliest names yet. We can pretend these are nicknames but I choose to believe these are their names given at birth and its coincidental that they all match until I'm proven otherwise because it's funnier that way

Downside of @hydrate-or-diedrate reading Homestuck is that it's made me want to reread Homestuck and it ends up being a constant battle of wills reminding myself that i do not, in fact, want to reread Homestuck
