A linguistic analysis of tumblr hyperbole in the tags

This post expands my previous analysis of hyperbolic reactions to cluster tags by themes. There were too many themes, some of them overlapping, to create a cohesive graph. Instead, I present several overarching themes from a data set of 50 tags observed and documented in various corners of tumblr.

1. Feeling Normal™️

Tags within this cluster profess Normal feelings (read: extreme excitement, enthusiasm, obsession, derangement, etc.).

7. Keysmashes

These tags center less around meaning and more around style, so they form the last group. A handful of these could fall under Noisy Emotional Outbursts because they represent reaction noises. In my linguistic judgment, keysmashing increases the hyperbole – consider augh versus aughfhghghghhh – the latter reads as prolonged and more intense emotionally.

The Gist of the Dangerous Exchange

This is one of my favorite events, how have I not done something about it yet-

The encounter with the Chess Choco twins would unintentionally have been the closest you got to being brought into the Darkness. (Rip Pomegranate) The inner parent within you wouldn’t have seen anything wrong with their antics, fully willing to go along with what they wish for you, unaware of the ties they had with the cookie that was after you.

Earl Grey Cookie though…you were suspicious of him just as much as you were with the previous CoD members, but that fact wasn’t known to you yet. You just had this odd feeling with the him, no matter how close and friendly he tried to get with you.

Trying to give you the first class experience, your very own room with all your needs met, even a bell to call for him if need be. Normally, you’d be pretty thankful of such treatment, but again, the vibes he’d give off made you steadfast.

As per the two’s request, you were made to be their King/Queen piece. You really couldn’t say no to the two, it made you happy to see them happy when you accepted, much to Brave and friends’ surprise. The twins made it pretty apparent that they were next level in terms of their skill for this game.

King: You were well protected by their pieces on the board, Gingerbrave and friends could not find an opening with how well guarded your position was.

Queen: The twins were a lot more loose with their pieces, but your role as a Queen piece meant you were actively taking the Brave gang’s pieces more often.

Those feelings about Earl Grey from earlier only seemed to become validated when came time for the chess game. You weren’t an expert with this game at all, but even you could see that Earl Grey seemed to be purposely throwing the match with his stalling.

A part of you was relieved when Gingerbrave decided to be, well, Gingerbrave, and win the match by putting you in checkmate. Hey, guess cheating was fine as long as you win, right?

The twins were not having it with Brave’s actions though. They demanded a rematch as you tried to calm them down, but Brave and the others grabbed you and led you away out of there, calling out to the two to take care now since there wasn’t really a whole lot you could do. Now the twins were even more upset at seeing you go, with Earl Grey having to be the one to calm them down…

“Where are Gingerbrave and the others?”

The twins had to solemnly admit that they got away..

“Was a cookie with a bright soul with them?”

The twins perked up a little with this question, saying that they did with Y/N Cookie! They reminisce on how fun it was to play chess with them, they even made them their most important piece! It was like when they saw into your, they saw a piece of family in your soul. An important piece….

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about this a lot today because I’ve been asked various questions around this theme. And what I think is lovely about Izzy’s arc or Izzy’s redemption is we don’t change who he was. It’s a version of who he was, who is now feeling gratitude and acceptance. And we can talk about the closet, whether it’s an emotional closet or a sexual closet. He comes out of the closet this season, figuratively and visibly, and every queer person has that story. They’re all different versions of the story, but the relief of the coming out process, it’s life-changing. That’s what Izzy does in this season, is he comes out and it’s had a profound effect on the audience. So many of them have already themselves or want to, or need to, and they let him, our writers let him. It’s lovely.

Here’s the drabble. A bit too nervous to put it on my blog so in an ask it goes, enjoy!

You’ve been invited to the family burrow for dinner once again. You talk with the elders, entertain the young’un’s and gossip with the buns your age but after you’ve eaten your fill you begin to feel a familiar drowsiness. Either the food here is really that good or they’re spiking it. You manage to stay awake long enough to get a moment alone on the couch. So soft and plush. Maybe get a little comfortable and move the pillows a little. Get it just right. Closing your eyes for just a minute wouldn’t hurt.

It felt like less than a moment to you but after a while Nyx comes looking for his companion, only to find you softly snoozing on the couch. It does look really cozy. And Nyx does love cuddling his precious predator. Just a minute wouldn’t hurt. A minute snuggled under your arms. You hardly notice him moving your arms to get comfortable, resting his little head on your chest and listening to your heart beating.

You’re in such a deep sleep it’s easy for him to just get lost in the calmness of it. The only thing interrupting the moment being the occasional soft snore. To think, the heart he’s listening to is almost the same size as his head, just beating away inches below him. Slowly and surely, the other buns start getting comfortable around you. Before Nyx can really be left to rest though ma bun needs him to help finish the dishes. Gently nudging him to lead him away, when he tries to slip free of your sleeping grasp he’s stopped, your fingers curling into claws.

For a moment he thought he had woken you up, but looking over at you, you were as asleep as ever. Despite all of this, your hand doesn’t loosen. He tries to more swiftly wriggle out of your hands only to get nowhere, your instincts clasping down on him harder, a low grumble resonating in your throat. He had only heard that a handful of times before. The sound was enough to put Nyx’s family on edge. Was this your unconscious protecting your prey? Your food?

To their surprise Nyx looked completely at ease, he knew what you were thinking about. That growl was one he had only heard when you threatened other predators. One he had only heard while you protected him. He knows he’s safe in your clawed arms. Even fast asleep, you tried to keep him safe.

Being pinned to a predator is a good excuse to get out of doing the dishes though. That’s definitely his excuse for not moving from now on
