Hi! I’d love your honest opinion on Schumi’s comeback to F1 with Mercedes, please? I remember him being absolutely awful, but I keep hearing that the Mercedes dominance that followed would have been impossible without the knowledge he brought to the team? I went on a trip down memory lane with Schumi over the break, and tbh, I kind of wish that I hadn’t…I’d forgotten how bad some of his behaviour was.

Funnily enough, the year Schumi returned to F1 (2010) was the year I temporarily lost interest in the sport after fourteen years of watching. I should've been delighted that my favourite was returning but he'd had his day and I'm a great believer in giving young upcoming racers a chance (in other words: Hamilton, Ricciardo, Alonso, Hülkenberg etc, just hang up your helmets ffs, you've either done it all and congrats for that or you're never going to so it's time to let someone else have a go).

I like to think Michael just did it to help Ross Brawn get the new team up and running; he was having fun back behind the wheel but I hope he knew as well as anyone else did, that it was never going to lead to further glory. The thing is, he didn't need to be one of the drivers to bring his considerable expertise to the table; he could've tested and advised without making it so obvious that he just didn't have the speed, stamina and reflexes of the younger drivers anymore. By pitting himself against them, he just threw into sharper relief the fact that he'd has his day and was no longer competitive.

I don't know that his behaviour was any worse than anyone else on track and his attitude off the track counts for a lot with me; compared with certain other drivers he's downright angelic.

To sum up, and being completely honest, much as I adore him, Michael's three years at Mercedes mean nothing to me and when I watch races from that era, I'm far more interested in how Rosberg is doing.
