1. What Makes a Door Handle “Designer”?
Designer door handles are more than just functional hardware; they are a statement of style and elegance. The distinction lies in the use of high-quality materials like solid brass and the attention to detail in craftsmanship. Designer handles often come from premium collections and are created by renowned designers, ensuring a touch of sophistication and luxury in your home.
2. The Role of Materials: Brass, Chrome, and Beyond
Brass has long been a favorite for luxury door handles, offering a classic look that ages beautifully. But modern interiors often call for different finishes like polished chrome or satin nickel. These materials not only differ in appearance but also in their feel and durability, making them suitable for various interior themes.
3. Luxury in Details: The Finishing Touch
The finish on a door handle plays a pivotal role in its overall aesthetic. Polished finishes, like polished brass or chrome, offer a shiny, reflective look, while satin finishes provide a more subdued, matte appearance. The choice between these finishes can significantly impact the feel of a room.
4. Lever Handles vs. Door Knobs: What’s Your Style?
Lever handles are known for their ease of use and ergonomic design, making them a popular choice for modern homes. On the other hand, door knobs offer a timeless elegance and can be a focal point in classic interior designs. Each has its own set of advantages and aesthetic appeal.
5. Integrating Door Handles with Interior Design
Choosing the right door handles involves considering the overall design theme of your space. Whether your home features contemporary designs or more traditional décor, selecting handles that complement and enhance your interior design is crucial for a cohesive look.
6. The Importance of Durability and Functionality
While aesthetics are important, the functionality and durability of door handles cannot be ignored. High-quality handles are engineered to withstand regular use and maintain their appearance over time, making them a practical as well as stylish choice.
7. Designer Collections: From Italian Craftsmanship to Modern Elegance
Designer collections often feature unique styles and materials, from beautifully crafted Italian designs to sleek, modern lines. These collections provide a range of options for those looking to make a statement with their door hardware.
8. Customization Options: Creating a Unique Experience
For those seeking a truly unique look, customization options are available. This could include selecting custom finishes, or even designing handles that are one-of-a-kind, tailored to your personal style and home decor.
9. Installation and Maintenance: Ensuring Longevity
Proper installation and maintenance are key to ensuring the longevity of your luxury door handles. This section offers practical advice on installation techniques and tips for keeping your handles looking as good as new.
10. Choosing the Right Handles for Different Types of Doors
Different types of doors require different types of handles. This section discusses how to choose the right handles for internal versus external doors and how to match handles to the specific type and style of door in your home.
Conclusion: Key Takeaways
Matching the right handles to the type of door can enhance both functionality and style.
Designer internal door handles are a blend of style, quality, and craftsmanship.
Material and finish choice can dramatically alter the look and feel of a space.
Lever handles and door knobs each offer distinct advantages for different styles.
Durability and functionality are as important as aesthetic appeal.
Designer collections provide a range of styles to suit any interior design theme.
Customization allows for a unique and personal touch in home decor.
Proper installation and maintenance are crucial for the longevity of luxury handles.

Mastering the Art of Italian Living Room Accessories
When it comes to crafting a living space that's an embodiment of Italian elegance, accessorizing is the key to transcending mere functionality and creating an atmosphere of refined sophistication. As you adorn your Italian-inspired living room, consider these tips to seamlessly weave trending decor elements into the timeless charm.
1. Metallic Flourish:
Embrace the allure of metallic accents that accentuate Italian furnishings. Incorporate brass, gold, or chrome finishes through decorative items like candleholders, trays, and picture frames. These gleaming touches add a touch of opulence to your space, harmonizing with the luxurious essence of Italian design.
2. Geometric Statements:
Modern Italian interiors delight in geometric patterns that offer a contemporary edge. Integrate throw pillows, area rugs, or art pieces with bold geometric designs. These patterns juxtapose against the classical lines of Italian furniture, infusing a dynamic and fashionable dimension.
3. Lush Indoor Greenery:
Breathe life into your Italian living room with indoor plants. Choose planters that resonate with the Italian aesthetic – perhaps terracotta pots for a Mediterranean touch. Trending hanging planters or minimalist plant stands add layers of visual interest while embracing the current obsession with botanical decor.
4. Artful Mirrors:
Mirrors are more than reflections; they're artistic statements. Adorn your living room with ornate mirrors that echo the elegance of Italian craftsmanship. For a contemporary twist, seek out mirrors with modern frames that incorporate metallic elements or unconventional shapes.
5. Textured Throws and Pillows:
Texture is a tactile luxury that enhances the comfort and visual appeal of your living space. Layer your Italian sofa and chairs with plush throws and pillows in trending fabrics like faux fur, velvet, or knit. These textures create a cozy contrast against the smooth surfaces of Italian furniture.
6. Artisanal Ceramics:
Italian artisans have a legacy of producing exquisite ceramics. Incorporate handmade ceramic vases, bowls, or plates as decorative accents. Their unique designs and earthy hues add an artisanal touch that complements the elegance of Italian furnishings.
Accessorizing an Italian living room is akin to painting the final strokes on a masterpiece. By blending metallic accents, geometric patterns, indoor greenery, mirrors, textured fabrics, and artisanal ceramics, you create a symphony of design that celebrates both classic allure and contemporary flair. With each accessory thoughtfully chosen, your living space becomes a canvas where the art of Italian living comes to life.

Splügen Bräu In 1960, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni were commissioned the interior design of an restaurant in Milan named ‘Splügen Bräu’. The concept of ‘Splügen Bräu’? An imaginary restaurant wagon “fin de siècle” where the high seat-back, polished brass details and iron made elements were lighted by a suspension lamp in corrugated metal, specifically designed for this project. Settled in Corso Europa 12, Milan the pub is so iconic that ‘Flos’ still produces the eponymous chromed chandelier. The very best of Italian society joined the opening party in 1961. The ‘neo-liberty’ furniture was sophisticated: the tables were placed on various levels: the sofas reminiscent of railway carriage seats: the ceiling garnered with black painted metal hoses. Max Huber designed the pub graphics from the lighted sign to the menus. The Castiglioni chandeliers were not the only success story from this now defunct restaurant - other furniture designed for this project also enjoyed a moment. The beer dispenser (‘Spinamatic’) won the ‘Compasso d’Oro' prize in 1964 and the umbrella stands and the ashtrays became part of the ‘Servo’ collection by ‘Zanotta’. Alls fair in love and design. ‘Splügen Bräu’, Corso Europa 12, 20122 Milan, Italy. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #flos #spinamatic #zanotta #servo #maxhuber #neoliberty #mansoniawalnut #achillecastiglioni #piergiacomocastiglioni #milan #restaurant #splugenbrau (at Milan, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CckOk6XMbJa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

‘There are only 12 flats spread between two buildings. The new kitchen has windows on three sides that overlook a communal garden,’ says John. Photo – Eve Wilson for The Design Files. Styling – Annie Portelli.
When friends John Wares and Peter Papadopoulos began searching for a Melbourne property to call home, they knew exactly what they were looking for. ‘We wanted something with historic charm, good light, and preferably not a terrace house – not easy to find in inner-city Melbourne,’ John says.
One building that came to mind was a 1920s apartment block in St Kilda that John had long admired. Designed by architect Christopher Cowper, the highly distinctive building features a sophisticated mix of inter-war, classical arts and crafts architecture, with large flats built to the street edge, and shops at the ground level in a European manner.
Several renovated flats in the St Kilda building came up during John and Peter’s 12 month search, but none were quite right… except for one that wasn’t on the market. Peter and John managed to track down the owner, and with ‘good timing, Peter’s negotiating skills, and a strong Australian dollar’ they managed to strike a deal.
1920s apartments often feature generous proportions, enabling a potential reconfiguration of the floor plan to include additional bedrooms and bathrooms. When John and Peter took possession in 2015, they set about doing exactly that, with the help of interior designer Tamsin Johnson, architect Fitt De Felice (responsible for the permits and documentation), and builder Mitty & Price. John also has an architecture degree, so he was able to work closely with the design team.
The apartment had previously been renovated, and some redesigned elements called for major jackhammering! While this is typically a nightmare for apartment owners, John says their needs, as well as those of the other 11 home owners in the building, were fantastically managed with patience, consideration and professionalism by their great builder.
Initially a two bedroom, one-bathroom apartment, this property now contains three bedrooms and two bathrooms. A formal dining room was converted to the main bedroom, the former kitchen became an en suite, the main bathroom was relocated, and a new kitchen replaced the former laundry in the enclosed balcony space.
The new kitchen is the crowning jewel of the entire space, where lady onyx Marble, green cabinetry, and garden views harmoniously come together, and Peter and John’s usually at-odds tastes perfectly converge. ‘John can go a little too baroque and Peter a little too brutalist – we hope they balance each other out,’ they explain.
The restrained yet impactful use of colour is also a highlight of this home, and a driving force of the entire interior scheme. ‘Colour came first. We wanted grey walls, a green kitchen and a ‘dipped’ master bedroom,’ says John. The two-tone main bedroom walls are painted with Dulux ‘Harpoon’ – a particularly striking, moody shade of blue.
As the owner of gift and homewares shop Mr Wares in the Block Arcade, and one half of Hall & Wares, John has furnished the apartment in his brand of classic, well designed pieces. There’s a celebration of hardworking materials such as solid timber, brass, leather and stone, alongside a collection of vintage European furniture and lighting sourced over many years.
Today this apartment is now shared by John, housemate Michael Burke, and Peter when he’s in town from Sydney where he works. Together, these three friends have created a wonderful space to be in, combining elements of several architectural styles, and in a rare setting where city, garden and beach meet.

The Most Wondrous Things at the Milan Furniture Fair
Tumblr media
MILAN — The winding staircase of the Palazzo Serbelloni was jammed with visitors photographing the bulbous Venezia lamps that Marcel Wanders designed for Louis Vuitton. The designers at the International Furniture Fair in Milan have long figured out that the 386,000 who attended this month are a tiny slice of the real audience, who live on Instagram.
Under continual pressure to pump out fresh goods, design companies now rely on photogenic displays to mask the distinction between old and new products. Substance is giving way to spectacle. And if that doesn’t bode well for innovation, it does make for a heck of a party.
1. Upcycle Chic
A persistent paradox of the design fair is the creation of so much stuff in a world overburdened with waste. Some designers met this challenge by turning castoffs into high-end products. Paola Navone, an Italian designer, above, teamed up with Corsi Design to create One Off chairs that were plucked from curbsides and secondhand shops and wrapped in playful, resin-coated bandages. (From 1,000 euros; corsidesign.it)
Eileen Fisher, the clothing brand, which turns unsold garments into lush wall hangings and pillows, showed work by the project’s creative director, Sigi Ahl, above, with ghostly clothes plastered to the surface. It was inspired by the 1980s paintings of David Salle. (€8,000; eileenfisher.com)
2. Carbon Copies
Iconic designs were remade in more earth-friendly materials. The Emeco 1006 Navy chair, originally made 75 years ago in aluminum because it didn’t rust or sink, now comes in wood. (Available in May, $700 to $1,000; emeco.net)
Kartell’s Camponobili storage unit, introduced in 1969, has a new life in bioplastic. The plant-based polymer is biodegradable and comes in pastel colors. (Available in May, $290; kartell.com)
3. Misshapes
Not since the 1990s have we seen so many biomorphic shapes. Even Molteni, an Italian company known for its clean contemporary lines, has joined the fun with Surf, a blob-shaped couch designed by Yabu Pushelberg. (Available in July, $9,745 for the version shown; molteni.it)
Free-form designs spilled onto rugs. Joost van Bleiswijk, a Dutch designer, creates Dadaist carpets inspired by ripped-up paper fragments. (nodusrug.it)
Designers also adopted cartoonish shapes that vied for attention. Mattiazzi, an Italian firm, showcased Fronda, a collection of chairs and stools that channel chunky primitivism. (mattiazzi.eu)
Conde House, a Japanese furniture maker, showed an upholstered oak chair called Nupri that looks like an airplane seat in the age of the Jetsons. (condehouse.com)
Plants and floral patterns were spotted throughout the fair. Pietro Sedda, a Milanese tattoo artist, created a set of botanical-themed plates and other designs for the German dinnerware company Rosenthal. (Cilla Marea plate for $100; rosenthal.de)
Mosaic tile flora also bloomed on the walls of Bisazza’s new flagship store in the Brera District. Carlo Dal Bianco designed both the patterns and the space. (bisazza.it)
The glamour of 1970s Art Deco is having a moment. Consider the UpTown floor lamp designed by Ferrucio Laviani for Foscarini. This disco tower of tricolor glass evokes the Empire State Building. ($3,953 to $5,908; foscarini.com)
Likewise, the tubular chrome and leather Coda chair by Atelier Troupe recalls 1970s Hollywood by way of the machine age. (From $8,000; atelierdetroupe.com)
Designers continue to draw inspiration from the ’80s. Six, a design gallery in Milan, paid tribute to Ettore Sottsass, the father of the Memphis movement, with totemic ceramic sculptures. (Available in the fall, €650 to €890, bitossihome.it)
8. Alchemy
Designers are mixing and matching materials that defy traditions. Apparatus, the New York studio, showed armoires, tables and lamps made from hand-dyed eel skin, Carpathian burl, Patagonia marble, shagreen and beaded embroidery on brass mesh. (Interlude collection, pieces starting at $32,000; apparatusstudio.com)
Our desire for coziness knows no limits. Missoni, the Italian knitwear label, yarn-bombed a house worth of vintage items, including TV sets, a double bed and chandeliers, under the direction of Angela Missoni, above. Asked how long it took to crochet everything, Alessandra Roveda, the artist, said she didn’t think in terms of days or years but in “television series.” (Objects for sale at Galleria Paola Colombari)
10. Fashion Week?
Fashion brands have become an unmistakable force at the fair. Hermès took over a former jai alai court in the Brera District with jungly wallpaper and a giant brick maze. Marni built a dystopian playground with slides and colorful furniture. Cos 3-D-printed a lacy outdoor pavilion. Versace turned its mansion on Via Gesù into a tropicalia fantasy. And Louis Vuitton unveiled its latest Objets Nomades collection at Palazzo Serbelloni, above, a Neoclassical palace where Napoleon once spent several months with Josephine. Maybe you’ve seen it on Instagram?

Newport Island Beach House
Hello, my friends! How are you doing today? I hope you’re having a nice and sunny day!
It’s a real pleasure to be sharing this newly-built Newport Island beach house designed by Eric Aust Architect (recently featured on Home Bunch here: Newport Beach Bayfront House), built by Clayton Builders, Inc. and with interiors by Julie Clayton.
Things certainly have changed when it comes to beach house design since I started the blog ten years ago, and I feel that this change is even more evident in California. Beach houses are now more modern, with clean lines, and they feel more uncomplicated. You can certainly credit the “modern farmhouse” trend for this big change and I don’t think this will change anytime soon. In fact, in my opinion, this mix of modern and rustic architectural details is an important progress that is happening in the architectural movement of the late 2010’s going into the 2020’s era.
Here, the designer Julie Clayton shares more details about this specific new home: “We took our inspiration for this project from its idyllic location: a quiet manmade island tucked away on the Newport Beach Peninsula The home has ocean and bay views, is a quick walk to the beach or bike ride to Lido Marina Village. We worked with Eric to design and build our take on a modern beachhouse making sure to highlight the views with an expansive rooftop deck for entertaining.”
Take notes on all details below and have fun pinning your favorite interior pictures and save the floor plan shared at the end of this post! This home would work perfectly on any smaller lot, anywhere in the country.

Michael is designer in Brooklyn focused on interiors, architecture, products, and curation. His design practice focuses on the building of a design community through collaboration. He founded Cooler Gallery that serves as a physical space in Brooklyn for conversations around the intersection of art/design. Michael has worked on interiors and architecture projects with some of Design Milk’s favorite design studios – Calico Wallpaper, Ladies and Gentlemen Studio, Caroline Z Hurley, Huy Bui, Madera Surfaces, Reform, and A/D/O as well as helping us with last year’s Milk Stand at ICFF

Instead of my typical trade show experience of feeling underwhelmed, jaded, and feeling like my eyes were glazed over from the shear vastness and lack of oxygen in the recirculated air, the Architectural Digest Design Show always delivers the goods. I’m (pretty obviously from that last bit) not typically one for trade shows, but the AD Design Show is a show where the visitors can actually discover new and genuinely interesting design. The event showcases a wide variety of products and furniture for the interiors trade, but the standout section annually is MADE – a juried selection of galleries, artists, and designers that are pushing that NEW NEW design.
Here is a roundup of some of our favorites from the show:
Artist/industrial designer Christopher Prinz, in partnership with Patrick Parrish Gallery, has created an incredible line of objects that float between design and art. At once minimalist and maximalist, Prinz’s wrinkled and electroplated zinc, steel, and copper forms are vaguely functional, but more importantly push the line in terms of what would normally be considered acceptable in the context of design.
Kin & Company is the Brooklyn design practice of cousins Joseph Vidich, architect with a deep knowledge of metalworking and fabrication, and Kira de Paola, an interior designer with a background in high-end furniture. “We take simple, fundamental geometry but always look for a moment to break or subvert the form,” says Joseph. In their booth, they have partnered with Brooklyn’s Wallpaper Projects to create a space showcasing ethereality, materiality, and a Bauhaus mentality towards form and craft.
Brooklyn-based ceramics studio SIN is the namesake of its founder – Virginia Sin. Mostly focused on home goods, Virginia is newly branching into the lighting world with terra cotta sconces that are meant to cast sunburst patterns onto the wall.
New to the scene, Brooklyn’s-own Facture is showing an incredible furniture line. On the surface, the maximalist, green epoxy resin pieces are bold. Upon closer inspection you realize the subtle changes in color are completely controlled by the depth of the resin cast. Each piece is a hand-carved armature for a resin outer shell.
Simon Johns creates furniture in the woods of Quebec. His minimal forms paired with strong materials and bits of raw-edged, unedited nature create a playful dynamic that is contemporary, and references the place where he creates.
Tantuvi’s founder Arati Rao works with Ikat weavers in South India and Dhurrie weavers of North India to interpret and challenge traditional rug weaving techniques. While working to conserve the rich culture and community of weavers, she challenges the design with her new Kona line. While referencing the history of production, the patterns and colors are all playful and present.
Birnam Wood Studio is the research-driven practice of Brecht Gander. He likes to make materials “spark, become molten, desiccate, oxidize, exhale and twist”. The focal point of the showcase is his wardrobe made from blackened steel frames and deeply textured orange concrete casts. Birnam Wood Studio has also partnered with Italian jewelry designer Suna Bonometti to create a stool that is as much a material experiment as it is a reference to Suna’s geometric jewelry.
The Principals, maybe best known for their immersive installations at MoMA PS1 and the Ace Hotel and their products for Areaware and the New Museum, have created a new, home-sized, shiny chrome and brass planter. The aggregating system can be used as singular planters or create a room-filling green environment.
NY Based Fabricator Marretti has just launched Origami – their cantilevered, ultra-thin (8mm), Corten steel staircase system. Off-the-shelf stair systems are never this design-forward, never this minimal, never this light. I am really looking forward to using this in projects.
Jan Kath Design has made a series of rugs in Partnership with the Museum of International Folk Arts. Each rug in the Common Threads collection are inspired by tiny embroideries from the late 18th to early 19th centuries created by working women in Belgium, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, and North America. The originals, roughly the size of a tissue, when enlarged to fill a room speak to a intense level of care and craft of the source – but also have a distinctively contemporary feel. Verrrry Hygge.
Manufacturer Smeg, famous for their cute, rounded, colorful appliances, has partnered with Fiat, famous for their cute, rounded, colorful cars, for the 50th year anniversary of the original Fiat 500. They created a wine refrigerator with the original molds of the car hood for no reason other than in their own words “a refrigerator is not just an appliance and a bonnet is not just a part of a car.” Good enough for me
