I know that we all make fun of Hikaru’s death because he IS a fuckass loser but at the same time I can’t help but wonder if it was the work of some kind of spirit at the same time.

It’s too big of a coincidence to me how when he died he was lucky enough to encounter the brain snatcher , plus we know that the brain snatcher kept malevolent spirits away so what if it was actually around there to send away the spirit that caused Hikaru’s death and then everything went down as we know?

implicity yes yoshiki did have a crush on hikaru and 'hikaru'/brainsnatcher's insticts are textually compared to romantic feelings so it is also literally a gay thing but the paranormal "wrongness" and secrecy of their relationship is a more overarching metaphorical way of saying this is some sort of gay situationship. the real hikaru never had feelings for yoshiki and current yoshiki can't have feelings for 'hikaru'. its a multilevel unrequited love story, but they still cling to each other as a way of filling out their respective wishes, hikaru's being to protect yoshiki, and yoshiki's to keep hikaru by his side no matter what. if you read the summer hikaru died as purely an allegorical romance its about two boys hiding their relationship from their conservative community. when reading it as subtext its about a shameful unrequited crush. when you layer these on top of each other it's not a romance at all. the summer hikaru died is pretty undeniably about grief, but i think that on top of the literal sense of grieving someones death its also about grieving something that will never happen, but clinging to it anyway. its grief over a friendship that no longer works on any operable level, but both parties involved desperately cling to it because otherwise, they would be incredibly lonely. i hate how much of a tumblr buzzword yearning became but it is about yearning. and lonliness. the brainsnatcher serves as the tool for prolonging a relationship that is already dead. its original purpose was a "wish granter"

#like i think that hikarus wish when he died the one about protecting hikaru is why the brainsnatcher has this affection for yoshiki #which could be likened to romantic affection #but its clearly stated that ultimately what the brainsnatcher feels is incomparable to any human emotions like that #comes from hikaru's desire to not hurt yoshiki through rejecting him romantically #so it became something that could never be spoken of #or else their friendship would have to dissolve #man. also the contrast between the two people who can 'see' their relationship the older housewife who tells yoshiki it's wrong and to end #the relationship immediately vs asako who approaches it with more open mindedness. understands that impurities don't = malevolent
