I know that we all make fun of Hikaru’s death because he IS a fuckass loser but at the same time I can’t help but wonder if it was the work of some kind of spirit at the same time.
It’s too big of a coincidence to me how when he died he was lucky enough to encounter the brain snatcher , plus we know that the brain snatcher kept malevolent spirits away so what if it was actually around there to send away the spirit that caused Hikaru’s death and then everything went down as we know?

Hmm would you recommend the summer hikaru died? Ive wanted to read it for a while but always got too lazy but now with the anime i might try it again
(tl;dr at the end)
I do! Honestly I'm neither a horror nor a MCD fan. But between the gorgeous artwork, the nuanced character writing, the eerie atmospheres, the (relatable for me) feelings of alienation as a queer person in a small rural town, and the unfolding mystery of the Great Brainsnatcher's real origins and the Indoh family's sin, it snatched my attention enough to keep following, and now I'm glad that I did.
Fair warning tho, this manga deals heavily with the theme of the loss of a loved one you didn't get to grieve properly (cause he's still around for everyone else, even if it's just a fake replacing him) and the helplessness that follows. So if you're sensitive to that topic, it might not be a story for you. The titular Hikaru dies before the story even starts, but you get to know him through Yoshiki's (his best friend and MC) memories and his (unrequited?) feelings for him, and you get attached anyway.
I'll admit that it was a rough read for me at first because of this, since I can't handle MCD that well 😭 but the story is an underrated gem and I recommend sticking with it, cause it's about so much more than just grief imo. The exploration of Yoshiki's internalized homophobia and self-hatred through the theme of alienation, of never quite fitting in, of belonging with the only other person who doesn't, who later ends up being a literal monster that can't belong in your same place of existence, lest reality as you know might crumble with him.
I have only one criticism of this story and it's the fact that the queer angle becomes a lot less overt in later volumes (tho not entirely dropped). Later on, Yoshiki's initial feelings of alienation as a gay guy in a small rural town shift into the alienation he faces at being the sole person knowing the truth about 'Hikaru'.
I've seen people dismiss the anime after learning that it's "a BL" but that's such an asinine take cause this story isn't that. It's so much more. It's not a romance, it's the story of Yoshiki's internal journey, the way he processes his romantic feelings as something shameful, something to keep quiet, to bear alone even if it tears him apart inside. Which later on becomes less a theme and more literal.
TL;dr: It's a fascinating story. An underrated gem, which I recommend to anyone who likes psychological horror and nuanced character writing, as well as the trope of monsterfucking as an exploration of queerness (that last one is a half-joke, but not quite 😂)

I’m so scared of what might happen to yoshiki in the story. Mokmoklen still hasn’t given us enough information but I noticed a pattern.
So, we know that for some kind of reason hikaru’s ancestor actually met lord brainsnatcher and after that encounter we can presume that some kind of pact was made (or something happened that deeply affected the brainsnatcher)
Tumblr media
But what worries me the most is the importance heads have been having. Hikaru’s ancestor was carrying a head , and we can presume that it was from yoshiki’s ancestors as well because of the long lashes and the hair (everyone is always telling him off because of this damn hair 😭)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we know that this person’s head became the protecting amulet of hikaru’s family since it was in their posses
Tumblr media
Now this is where I’m theorizing, but I believe that this person might be hichi-san and they were some kind of sacrifice for the great brainsnatcher. “We must return hichi-san to the mountain”that’s what hikaru’s grandpa said, and what if that’s the reason why hikaru’s ancestor brought the head of his beloved with him? Distraught after the ritual he escapes with their head and miraculously meets with this mysterious entity (“Hikaru”) and from that moment on the brainsnatcher swore it would never hurt the people that were protected by the indou’s family.
And I believe this might be yoshiki’s faith in the near future. Notice how mokmoklen always draws attention to yoshiki’s neck in most official arts (and we know that their drawings have deep symbolism and foreshadowing in them)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
His head here is literally cut off (he’s also missing an eye and the person’s head at the beginning had that side of their face covered so we can’t really say if that’s the case as well for them but yk)
Tumblr media
Now something important we know is that yoshiki’s soul is very pure? Beautiful? However you wanna put it, and “Hikaru” stated multiple times that spirits are attracted to him because of that. (We also know from asako’s granny that the line that separates the human world with the world of the undead is significantly getting thinner and more blurred)
So what if a human sacrifice was needed ? A human with a soul so beautiful that would lure all the spirits back to their original place?

[ID: A digital drawing of Hikaru Indou, as seen as Lord Brainsnatcher, from Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu. He is smiling as his insides spill out from his right eye and fill the side and corner on the canvas. In the first picture it reads "光が死んだ夏" (hikaru ga shinda natsu) next to him.
The background is a very dark blue, and the art itself is mostly in light blue lines, with some parts colored in a way that they look to be glowing. /End ID]
