its so weird to me that most people have consistent or atleast chronological memories and thoughts, maybe its just a me thing struggling w dissociation all my life where memories from 5 min ago get stored and strung together with long term memories from my childhood and i traverse moment to moment as if flipping a calendar. it really makes me think about what my life would be like if i didnt get help for my memory loss at 15, what it would be like if i didnt have a friendly gay therapist that knew how detrimental heavy mental health diagnosis could be to my transition, if he hadnt agreed to work on my dissociation disorder with only counseling despite me hitting rock bottom and spiraling, if he hadnt phrased his discovery of what i was going through in the gentlest way possible.
like imagining a life where i didnt start dealing with my dissociation and identity a decade ago and amassing tools and skills to help me out of unsolvable situations and having to deal with all of that crashing on me at this point in my life would be so catastrophic! i rely so heavily on the systems and patterns ive formed for me to function in any situation regardless of the stress involved that if i didnt figure this out when i did i wouldve fucked up my life even more and id have even less memory retention overall, its so scary to imagine living an adult life without this constant in my life and yet every solution i see recommended for memory loss is about eliminating dissociation when that is what offers me access to my memories to begin with
