... only Mr. Coffin the Principal was standing right behind me and he says, "IS THAT THE KIND OF BOY YOU WANT TO BE," and I say No... I want to be the kind of boy who who can DE-MATERIALIZE into just molecules and transport myself into OTHER DIMENSIONS with just the power of my MIND. (Bradley, as according to his bio.)

AN ORAL HISTORY OF YTV IN THE 1990S.
Will Sloan, the co-host of two movie focused podcasts, The Important Cinema Club and Michael & Us, but more importantly, the man banned from Twitter for seven days for hoping baby Yoda would die painfully, has re-released his 'Oral History of YTV', but this time on Amazon in book form.
"Some years ago I wrote an oral history of the beloved Canadian children's TV channel YTV. It's sadly no longer online... but now exists as a chapbook and ebook." - Will Sloan via Twitter
Before I write anything else please visit the following Amazon links to purchase said book. Canada: http://Keepitweird.ca USA: https://a.co/d/ium1Ion
As an enthusiastic listener of The Important Cinema Club, I find myself filled with anticipation at the mere thought of being able to read and reminisce about the fun times I had watching YTV.
As a child of the 90s, there's one thing I can confidently say: YTV played a paramount role in shaping the upbringing of myself and my friends. Fond memories flood back as we recall tuning in eagerly to catch our favorite shows. It was a magical experience where every viewing promised an unforgettable adventure.
YTV was more than just a television channel; it was a gateway to happiness and endless entertainment. For kids of that era, including myself, it was a cherished part of our daily routine. From captivating animated series to hilarious live-action shows, YTV never failed to deliver on its promise of providing a good time for its viewers.
Each show on YTV offered a unique and imaginative world. Samurai Pizza Cats took us on action-packed adventures with heroic feline warriors. Reboot, with its groundbreaking CGI animation, transported us into the captivating realm of Mainframe, where Bob and his friends fought viruses and protected the digital universe. Nanalan' enchanted us with its adorable puppetry, and Stickin' Around had us laughing with the misadventures of Stacy and Bradley. These shows not only entertained us but also ignited our imaginations and made us feel like we were a part of something extraordinary.
As the years passed, YTV continued to evolve, bringing new shows and fresh memories to subsequent generations. The nostalgic pull of this beloved channel remains strong, connecting 90s kids and beyond through a shared love for the iconic shows of that era. Even now, as we reminisce about the fun times we had watching YTV, we can't help but feel a sense of joy and warmth in our hearts.
While the focus here has been on relishing the past, there's something worth mentioning about preserving the legacy of YTV for future generations. The influence of this cherished channel on Canadian culture and the hearts of its viewers is undeniable. For those who may not be familiar with YTV, it's essential to introduce them to the magic it once brought into our lives.
If you're a Canadian who grew up cherishing the wonder of YTV, or if you simply want to experience a piece of Canadian television history, I urge you to check out this book. Delve into the nostalgia, reminisce about the shows that filled your heart with joy, and let the magic of YTV transport you back to a simpler time.
Order your copy today, and let the journey down memory lane begin anew.

Reading Short Fiction, Thurs. 8.1.24
Due Date Changes/Schoology Prep
CR1 RD is due tomorrow morning. If you are done, then I will take a look this afternoon while you start reading Jones, “Wait for Night."
CR1 FD is due Monday morning.
Reminder: All the assignments are directly linked to on the syllabus itself; they are all Google Docs.
Discussion of 2nd 1/2 of Johnson, “Emergency”
Watch a second clip from the movie: 49:55-58:45
We will do this in small groups and then discuss the results together. All groups should look for connections in their category to "Sidle Creek."
TIMELINE: Calvin, Jayden, Reed
INTERPRETATION: Marcus, Nijay, Isaiah
LANGUAGE: Bradley, Damon, Tyler, Kerin
PERSONAL REACTIONS: Tyree, Kyaire, Derek
1st Sentence/Last Sentence Game for Jones, “Wait for Night”
Work on CR1
Some more on Denis Johnson and Jesus' Son, if time allows.
Johnson said that “Jesus’ Son” was drawn from memory. “Almost everything in there actually happened to someone I know or heard about. He said that his own nickname was Fuckhead.
"Denis believed he was personally affected by miracles, that God is supernaturally active in individuals’ lives in profound and unexpected ways. God saved Denis from alcoholism and addiction through Alcoholics Anonymous and the 12 Steps...Denis, who regularly attended meetings as long as I knew him, told me that he hated small talk and that AA meetings spoiled him in this regard — people there only talked about real, personal issues."
"...those aspects of human experience that seem excessive or out of scale."
Denis Johnson interview: “I feel very privileged to hear how somebody used to run around stickin’ people up and stealing cars, and now they’re gettin’ their life back together. I was in one [group] just a few days ago, and there was this girl who had been clean and sober for 17 days. She got a check for $300, and she told us everything she did with the check — she paid her dad back a hundred dollars, she paid some bills, and then she sent $25 to a cancer hospital for children. I was just so amazed. It was such a beautiful thing. And she’d formerly been a whore. I just love the stories. The stories of the fallen world, they excite us. That’s the interesting stuff.”
Freedom, hunger for new experiences, the sublime in the ridiculous & vice-versa
Life is suffering but there is the possibility of (momentary) transcendence or even redemption.
Prophetic, visionary, Christian.
Consequences (both good & bad) of mortality.
Miracles, Mysteries.
"He’s someone you have to respond to the way you respond to the deepest, weirdest, truest voices of rock and roll: you don’t want to be him, or even—if you’re at least halfway sane—to be with him; you just want to hear him tell it, because when he does everything feels heightened."
The last lines of the last story in Jesus' Son when the narrator is working at a home for the disabled: “All those weirdos, and me getting a little better every day right in the midst of them. I had never known, never even imagined for a heartbeat, that there might be a place for people like us.”
Homework: CR1 RD due AND Read Jones, “Wait for Night” (2020), p. 1-8, ending at “leg up to my Buick.”

"I don't mind either way," Finn replied smoothly, flashing Mateo a winning smile. He raised a brow at that admission, not sure whether he should apologize or not for the thunderbird meeting the pain in the asswang that owned him. Probably should since Mateo was nice. "Fuck, I'm sorry then," he chuckled, bright eyes darting over the younger man's face as he squinted for a moment. "Though you don't seem traumatized so that's pretty fuckin' impressive. Must've been one hell of a conversation." Gareth might not be as horrible as some of the councilmen around here but Finn still considered him an asshole. Course Finn also had different personal experiences as Gareth's slave compared to Bradley and Silver and everyone else in the castle. "I am, yeah, though I'd say this costume is gettin' me a lot less attention than prior years. Not complainin'." The familiar smirked at that, nodding at the raven perched on Mateo's shoulder. "I'm sure you must be stickin' out with that thing. Nice touch. How's your evening goin' so far?"
Mateo chuckled at the familiar's comment. "I know, right? I swear I'm not doing it on purpose." Maybe if he joked enough he could convince Finn he wasn't a complete idiot. He nodded his thanks as Finn let him step outside, taking in a deep breath of the crisp air. It was a nice change from the close and stuffy air of the club. The wind felt good on his face, too. Finn mentioned his master (what was the etiquette behind this? Did you talk to someone about the fact that they were a slave or did you politely ignore it?) and Mateo was reminded that he'd met the man. "Gareth? I've met him. Or, we had a conversation, anyway." In which Mateo had found out that Finn had tried to murder a councilman. That was definitely information the thunderbird hadn't expected. He looked back at the other man when he guessed his costume, nodding. "Got it in one. It seemed easy enough and mostly recognizable." Mateo shook his head in answer to the question, maybe a little too quickly. "No, I don't mind at all." That was probably too eager but he was almost back on decent conversational footing so he tried not to let himself get bogged down with that comment. It was easier to let it go given that he'd had a few drinks. "You having a good night so far? Bet you're getting a lot of attention with that costume." He inwardly winced again at the impulsive statement (this was why he didn't normally drink so much) but refused to take it back.

Okay guys I'm gonna ramble for a sec about my favorite cartoon
STICKIN AROUND IS SO COOL.. ITS DEEP TOO like theres so many references to things. Like how Russell is crushing on Stacy how Stacy+Bradley stick up for each other whenever Lance+Russell try to pick on them too. Bradley is actually so cool and me real (except I'm not black or canadian or a man or 8 years old or a cartoon)
