Brachypelma Smithi 🕷️

Dangerosity : 2/10
Identity :
Name : Brachypelma Smithi
Surname : Mexican Redknee Tarentula
Family : Theraphosidae (Tarantula's family!)
Average size : 7 to 10 cm body, up to 15-17 cm with the legs. She has curves, she assumes them. Voluptuous queen...👑
A Halloween-chic vibe, like "I'm classy AND dramatic, all the time... 🙄💅" A visual icon.
Living : Native to the dry tropical forests and scrub of Mexico (state of Guerrero). It lives in burrows that it digs or retrieves !
Life expectancy: Male: 5 to 6 years (men 🙄 ☕...) Female: Until age 25. A real matriarch!
🕷️
> Visual distinctiveness :
Bright red knees "as if she had stolen her Mexican grandmother's blush 💄"
Black velvet body, contrasted by orange or caramel areas
The patterns on the cephalothorax (the head) are more degraded in the smithi, more distinct in the hamorii
She has a goth-Latina icon look, like “I charm you or I freak you out, depending on my mood…💋”

🕷️
Characteristics:
Very photogenic : She's THE postcard tarantula. She poses. She knows how. It's the most common spider used in movies due to its large size and beautiful coloration ! (Cut the cameras... Deadass. 🙄💅📸)
Calm temperament : So humble... ideal for beginners in terrarium keeping
Camouflage Adept: Often hidden, except when hunting or exploring. The queen doesn't show herself !
Protected species: endangered due to animal trafficking. Responsible breeding is crucial.
🕷️
Venom :
When biting, mexican red knee tarantula delivers a mild venom, resulting in temporary localized pain and swelling but without serious long-term consequences.
It's not dangerous for human (at least you are allergic !!). It's like a bite of bee !!
> Attack :
She's not a killer. A defensive one. A princess who slaps you with her eyelashes. 💋
She prefers to flee or fling her urticating hairs (the famous "urticating hairs") when threatened.
🕷️
Behavior :
🕷️ Very docile, but can become stressed easily if handled too often (DON'T TOUCH ME !! 😖)
🕷️ Creates burrows and webs on the ground to detect the vibrations of its prey.
🕷️ It feeds on insects (crickets, cockroaches), sometimes small rodents or lizards !
🕷️ In captivity, it's a bit of a diva: it can go on hunger strike for weeks before molting (because yes, Lady Brachypelma Smithi has a wardrobe !👗).
🕷️
But... If it was an Hamorii ?
The Brachypelma Hamorii is a cousin of our actress !! She's not so dangerous too !
Formerly confused with Smithi, it was recognized as a distinct species in 1997 ! Like 2 twin sisters 🥰

As you can see (if you can't, I trust you... I take more than 1h to do the distinction 😭), The colors are a little paler, with knees more orange than bright red.
The patterns are sharper and more clearly defined on the head.
Even Arachnologists struggle telling the difference between Smithi and Hamorii ! 😭
Arachnologists : so... You, are Smithi ? And you, are Hamorii. Right ?
🕷️ : NO ! I am HAMORII !! 😠
🕷️ : And I AM SMITHI !! 😠
Arachnologists : but... Ho God...
🕷️ : human... 🙄☕
🕷️ : Guurl... 🙄☕

I’m not sure if you’ve done this one yet, but could you possibly draw your C.C and Charlie interacting? :D
Charlie showing her pet tarantula to Evan >:)) It's a Brachypelma smithi (yes very specific because I spent a month or so searching about spiders and tarantulas just to decide if I wanted it to be someone's pet (at the time, Fritz's) or not. Did you know that spiders have PADS IN THEIR LITTLE FEET??)
I don't think I drew them together more than once. Weird, considering I make them best friends and classmates.
Also once again, another change in Charlie's design... I'm never satisfied with hers for some reason. Testing to see if she looks okay with glasses! I liked it <3

This may be random but I just got reminded that when I was a kid I have dressed up as Brachypelma smithi on my birthday once and even pretended to kick hair.
I have also casted Littlest Pet Shop (cute, highly stylized figurines of various animals) spiders as existing species. Including the actual Pteronichilus murinus.

What a beautiful spider she is! And I'd lose my mind if I saw a kid dressed up as a tarantula pretending to kick hairs that's incredible

Catching up on Invertober, day 6: Mexican redknee tarantula!
[Image description: A digital drawing of a Mexican redknee tarantula. It is a large spider with light orange “knee” joints on the legs and pedipalps, a light orange cephalothorax with a large dark grey spot, a dark grey abdomen, and thick hairs on the abdomen and parts of the legs, pedipalps, and chelicerae.

Introducing the first of my pets, Paprika the Brachypelma boehmei tarantula! She was my first exotic.
(I took this right before cleaning and refilling her water, pls ignore that)
I also have a Grammastola pulchra, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens, and a Brachypelma smithi. I don't have good pics of them and they're still slings.

Introducing My Tarantulas, Part One:
The first tarantula I ever got was Matilda. She is a Brachypelma smithi, commonly known as the Mexican Red Knee tarantula. This is because her species is primarily from Mexico and they have red knees.

Here is a picture of me holding her. She is incredibly dirty despite never once having made a burrow.

Hello! I saw a tarantula at the pet store (I live in Oregon) that was brown with really bright orange legs but the tank didn't have a label and I'm wondering if you know what breed it was. I'm sorry I don't have a better description
Either Brachypelma smithi or Brachypelma hamorii. Both are commonly called the Mexican Redknee Tarantula. B. smithi is a bit more common in the pet trade as their leg colour is more vibrant, but B. hamorii is still sold at the price of a B. smithi to trick buyers. If it's a chain pet store it's more likely to be B. hamorii, but if it's a small store it's more likely to be B. smithi.
If the colour was very vibrant, it's almost guaranteed to be B. smithi.

Spidecember day 19
Character: Ms Tarantula
Series: The Bad Guys
Species: Mexican redknee tarantula (Brachypelma hamorii or Brachypelma smithi)
Anatomical accuracy: 8/10
While her book equivalent is Mr. Tarantula, I'm specifically referring to the movie version.

She's part of "The Bad Guys", a group of commonly maligned animals that turned to crime due to life giving them few other options. The full group is Mr Wolf, Mr Snake, Mr Shark, Mr Piranha, and Ms Tarantula.
Mhm.
As compared to the actual red-knee tarantula, the black segments are a nice burgundy.

(B. hamorii on the left, B. smithi on the right.)
Now, obviously actual spiders don't have that humanoid torso, but I do like the usage of the pedipalps as arms. Or well, arms instead of pedipalps?
Though points off for the legs connecting to the abdomen.
Something I didn’t mention on our last tarantula, but tarantulas aren’t true spiders. All spiders are order Araneae. Most spiders are suborder Opisthothelae. However, unlike most of our spiders with real life counterparts, tarantulas are not in the infraorder Araneomorphae. Instead, they, alongside trapdoor spiders, make up the infraorder Mygalomorphae. The main difference is the direction the fangs point- araneomorphs have fangs crossing horizontally, while mygalomorphs (and suborder Mesothelae) have fangs that point downwards.
There's other differences as well, but that's the easiest to remember. 4/7.
Speaking of fangs- I’ve already stated my feelings on human teeth for spiders, but her tooth gap ivokes the shape of a spider’s fangs. Vaguely.
Quite admirably, her walk cycle seems to be referenced off of actual tarantulas. It's difficult to describe, but the order the legs move in is familiar.
Uricating hairs, for those unfamiliar, are the fuzzy hairs on a tarantula's abdomen. They can be flicked off when the spider is distressed, irritating the eyes or nose of a potential predator and giving them time to run.
While never specifically using them, she is rather fluffy. All in all, while toony, she is still quite nice.
FINAL RATING
6/10 I like her tiny laptop.
...This review is over.
