Playing D&D again, after a long break thanks to being a socially anxious wreck - and my DM is letting me play a Bozak Draconian. The fool.
Azzak here is an old-school draconian and remembers the glory days of the dragonarmies. Nowadays he tells stories, sings old songs and gets into as many fights as the party will allow.

Prepping Basic Enemies
Tumblr media
Continuing to put my notes together for my upcoming Dragonlance game, and I turned my attention to the basic enemies for at least the first few chapters of the story.
As I explained previously, the party will be playing new original characters, but taking the place of the Innfellows in the main narrative. The Innfellows (Tanis, Raislin, etc) will be gone, entirely removed from history, and new heroes will play their parts in history.
What I need from the start then is a simple collection of creatures - Goblins, Hobgoblins and Draconians.
Goblins and Hobgoblins at least ar eeasy, because 5e already has them. I can just use those.
The basic Hobgoblin also has a few variations available, so I took the Captain and make a few adjustments so that I had the character of Fewmaster Toede ready early on. Should he manage to survive, I’ll likely upgrade him a bit for later appearances.
For the Draconians I had to be a bit more creative, but still took a few shortcuts. At a base level, I’ll just be using basic NPC stats such as the Knight or Mage, and adding some additional elemtns. In a few places I've changed weapons, added claws more fitting to Draconians, and to each type added their special mode of death.
Draconians of course don’t just die, they have t make a spectacle of it. Baaz for example turn to stone, whereas Bozak have exploding bones.
Another thing of course is that Draconians, unlike Dragonborn who I thought to use as a base originally, have wings (though most can only glide rather than fly). To the best of my knowledge Draconians also lack breath weapons like Dragonborn, but this might be due to a misstep in research, so I may change if I discover otherwise.
Anyway, these are the basic stats I’ve prepared for the basic enemies to be faced in the opening chapters. I think, based on the core narrative, that the only other things to think about are whether the party choose to fight the spectres of Daarken Woods, and how quickly they come across Onyx at Xak Tsaroth.
All of the images below I’ve printed and made into sleeved cards for easy reference during the game.

Uncommon Races: Dragonborn
Born of dragons, as their name proclaims, the dragonborn walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. Shaped by draconic gods or the dragons themselves, dragonborn originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids. Some dragonborn are faithful servants to true dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in life.
Proud Dragon Kin
Dragonborn look very much like dragons standing erect in humanoid form, though they lack wings or a tail. The first dragonborn had scales of vibrant hues matching the colors of their dragon kin, but generations of interbreeding have created a more uniform appearance. Their small, fine scales are usually brass or bronze in color, sometimes ranging to scarlet, rust, gold, or copper-green. They are tall and strongly built, often standing close to 6½ feet tall and weighing 300 pounds or more. Their hands and feet are strong, talonlike claws with three fingers and a thumb on each hand.
The blood of a particular type of dragon runs very strong through some dragonborn clans. These dragonborn often boast scales that more closely match those of their dragon ancestor — bright red, green, blue, or white, lustrous black, or gleaming metallic gold, silver, brass, copper, or bronze.
Self-Sufficient Clans
To any dragonborn, the clan is more important than life itself. Dragonborn owe their devotion and respect to their clan above all else, even the gods. Each dragonborn’s conduct reflects on the honor of his or her clan, and bringing dishonor to the clan can result in expulsion and exile. Each dragonborn knows his or her station and duties within the clan, and honor demands maintaining the bounds of that position.
A continual drive for self-improvement reflects the self-sufficiency of the race as a whole. Dragonborn value skill and excellence in all endeavors. They hate to fail, and they push themselves to extreme efforts before they give up on something. A dragonborn holds mastery of a particular skill as a lifetime goal. Members of other races who share the same commitment find it easy to earn the respect of a dragonborn.
Though all dragonborn strive to be self-sufficient, they recognize that help is sometimes needed in difficult situations. But the best source for such help is the clan, and when a clan needs help, it turns to another dragonborn clan before seeking aid from other races — or even from the gods.
DRACONIANS
In the Dragonlance setting, the followers of the evil goddess Takhisis learned a dark ritual that let them corrupt the eggs of metallic dragons, producing evil dragonborn called draconians. Five types of draconians, corresponding to the five types of metallic dragons, fought for Takhisis in the War of the Lance: auraks (gold), baaz (brass), bozak (bronze), kapak (copper), and sivak (silver). In place of their draconic breath weapons, they have unique magical abilities.
Dragonborn Names
Dragonborn have personal names given at birth, but they put their clan names first as a mark of honor. A childhood name or nickname is often used among clutchmates as a descriptive term or a term of endearment. The name might recall an event or center on a habit.

Dragonborn Traits
Your draconic heritage manifests in a variety of traits you share with other dragonborn.
Ability Score Increase. Your Strength score increases by 2, and your Charisma score increases by 1.
Age. Young dragonborn grow quickly. They walk hours after hatching, attain the size and development of a 10-year-old human child by the age of 3, and reach adulthood by 15. They live to be around 80.
Alignment. Dragonborn tend to extremes, making a conscious choice for one side or the other in the cosmic war between good and evil (represented by Bahamut and Tiamat, respectively). Most dragonborn are good, but those who side with Tiamat can be terrible villains.
Size. Dragonborn are taller and heavier than humans, standing well over 6 feet tall and averaging almost 250 pounds. Your size is Medium.

Draconic Ancestry. You have draconic ancestry. Choose one type of dragon from the Draconic Ancestry table. Your breath weapon and damage resistance are determined by the dragon type, as shown in the table.
Breath Weapon. You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. Your draconic ancestry determines the size, shape, and damage type of the exhalation.
When you use your breath weapon, each creature in the area of the exhalation must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your draconic ancestry. The DC for this saving throw equals 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. The damage increases to 3d6 at 6th level, 4d6 at 11th level, and 5d6 at 16th level.
After you use your breath weapon, you can’t use it again until you complete a short or long rest.
Damage Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your draconic ancestry.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and Draconic. Draconic is thought to be one of the oldest languages and is often used in the study of magic. The language sounds harsh to most other creatures and includes numerous hard consonants and sibilants.

((Pathfinder: The Crimson Saber’s journey part 13 - A new challenger appears!))
A couple of hours earlier...
She was no stranger to forests at night.  She was as much at home with nature as the creatures of the wild, of which she sensed a kinship with.  Her two travelling companions, a pair of powerful tigers, kept close to her side as she looked up to the rain.  Normally, the rain would bring a smile to her face, but all it did this night was soothe her head...
She had no idea who the being was earlier.  All she knew was he was no human, and that he had a plan for her.  Before she could ask any questions, he had grabbed her by the forehead, and after coming to, she had found a strange mark on her forehead.
As she continued her travels, a strange singing came to her slightly pointed ears, which remained hidden behind her long flowing hair.  “Fey are nearby...” she muttered to her tigers, making sure they were keeping awake “That means others have been here too.”
She looked around the nearby area before spotting smoke coming from a nearby abandoned shack.  “Too little smoke for it to be on fire.  Perhaps the Fey's targets are in there, or were in there if they fell for its tricks...”
As she approached the shack, a new sound filled her ears, the sound of heavy snoring.  She carefully entered, before spotting four sleeping figures within.  A Ratfolk next to the fire, face first in an alchemy kit.  A Kitsune, slumped to one side near the door.  A Minotaur, crashed down in the center, with a Kobold sleeping atop, slightly drooling.  She wasn't sure if it was the drooling, or what exactly, but just something about the Kobold rubbed her the wrong way...
Her tigers moved to sit either side of Riki-teef to dry next to the fire as she decided to stay in the cabin and wait until day, to at least see what the group were doing there.
As day broke, the light returned, yet the rain carried on, as did the thunder and lightning. First to wake was Kheevee, who mumbled slightly to herself before looking to the newcomer.
“Oh...hi th...” She stopped mid-sentence, before quickly scurrying to a distant corner of the cabin “guys...  wake up, we got company!”
Riki-teef was next, slowly coming to before realizing the two sleeping tigers surrounding her.  Her fur quickly poofed up as she scurried over to Kheevee, only then spotting the mysterious woman.
“Who are you?!?” Riki-teef screamed at her, loud enough to wake up Zizi and Kiruto, as well as the tigers, who moved to their owners side.
The strangers gaze moved from Riki-teef to the others, as she locked eyes with Kiruto. Zizi, meanwhile, having not noticed the newcomer moved to step outside into the rain “I think I picked up a musty scent from this damn cabin...”  Kheevee quickly took a sniff of herself, noticing she probably had picked up the scent from Zizi, and rushed to follow him outside.
“I don't think she wants to answer...” Kiruto muttered as he looked to Riki-teef “But she has yet to attack, so I think we're safe.”  “How can Riki be safe around big cats?!?” Riki-teef cried out, pointing to the tigers, before a loud flash from outside caught them all off guard.
“Was that lightning outside?”
Moments later, a slightly singed Zizi and Kheevee teetered into the cabin.
“I know you have a bond with electricity, Kheevee, but I didn't know you attracted lightning...”
“Neither did I...” Kheevee muttered as she moved in front of the fire, holding her forehead as the mark of Bladestorm glowed once more, as it did on Zizi's forehead.  The stranger took note, before standing up.
“My name is Annette. I would say the forest has guided me to you, but truth be told, it would be more accurate to say the man who gave you those marks guided my path after mine crossed his..” the stranger replied finally, before tapping at her own forehead.
“Bladestorm marked you too?”
“If that is his name, then yes.  I came upon this cabin last night and found you all asleep thanks to a fey's song.”
Kiruto nodded slightly “Well thank you for keeping watch on us for the night.  I am Kiruto, the big guy is Zizi, the small one here...”
“Riki-teef!” Riki-teef cried out before Kiruto could finish his sentence, as Kheevee turned to face Annette “And I'm Kheevee, it's a pleasure to mee...” her words trailed off as she noticed Annette's gaze turn cold towards her once more.
“Well, with all that said...” Zizi grabbed his equipment “We could wait until the rain calms down and carry on towards the next town” before his gaze moved to Annette “You can come too if you so wish.”
“Well, my place isn't usually among such towns and cities, but I feel as if our paths must remain the same for now...”
Kheevee quickly went to check on the weather “The rain is calming down, and I'm not hearing anything...”
“Maybe Lizard should step outside to check!”
As Kheevee began to step outside, she froze up before shooting a glare at Riki-teef “I'm not being struck by lightning again...”
“But how will we know for sure if someone doesn't take the first hit?”
Kheevee sighed before stepping outside, her eyes closed shut before she looked upwards.
“No, I'm fine, it's gone, we're good to continue...”
As the group continued through the forest with their new-found team-mate, several thoughts were running through their heads.  Zizi was just happy it stopped raining so hard, the rain having changed to a light shower, while Riki-teef was concerned about the tigers at either side of her. Kheevee however couldn't help but shake at the thought of the cold glare from Annette.  Gulping, she finally decided to turn to her.
“Why do you look at me with such hate, miss?”
Annette continued to stare daggers at the Kobold before shrugging “No reason...”, being somewhat unsure herself about why.
Kheevee sighed and nodded as she tried to catch back up to the others, before Zizi stopped the group.
“There's some people ahead.  Five cloaked figures...”
“Have they got weapons?” Annette questioned, looking in the direction as she had her tigers hold their positions.  Zizi slowly decided to move ahead of the group towards the cloaked figures, before they began to draw their weapons.
“They do now...”
Kiruto slowly turned as he heard the nearby foliage rustle, before four more cloaked figures moved to close off their escape route “And we're surrounded, gre...”  he stopped mid-sentence “wait, I think I've seen these guys before.  They were chasing that kender...”
“The one I got the map from?” Zizi questioned, before looking back ahead to the five in front, as one moved forward, lowering his hood to reveal himself as a Draconian.
“So you did find our map then?  And judging by your travel, you have it, don't you?  You have the ghostblade?”
“Ghostblade?” Kheevee tilted her head as she looked to Zizi “Do they mean that sword that hurts ghosts that Guil had?”
“No, I'm pretty sure they mean that invisibility sword from the tomb...” Zizi replied, his eyes still on the draconian.  “Oh...  Well, you might want to watch out for him...” Kheevee quickly replied as she moved a bit closer, so she was between Zizi and the rest of her group “I think he's a Bozak, I think that's the name anyway.  Magic and all that...”
Zizi nodded to Kheevee “Good to know, so...Bozak...” as he turned back to the leader of the group “We'll give you one chance to retreat, otherwise...”
“Enough talk.  Get them!” the Bozak hissed in draconian to his allies, as the ones behind the others charged forward, only to be met with the two large tigers.  Riki-teef quickly prepared her potion of fire-breathing, as Annette prepared a magical flame blade from her hand.  Kiruto took aim at one of the four, as Zizi charged in to clash with those ahead. Kheevee meanwhile granted mage armour to all her group.
As the group began to fight, they quickly noticed something, as Zizi managed to take down the first one, quickly pulling the ghost blade back as the draconian's body turned to stone.
“Right, new plan guys, if you're fighting up close, pull back quick otherwise you're going to get a weapon stuck!”
The group responded as they began to make quick work of the Draconians, either dodging their blows or taking them down before serious damage could occur, aside from a slight bit of backfire from Riki-teefs flame breath catching one of the tigers.
The Bozak however was getting his hits in, with magic missile barrages and scorching rays hitting down on Zizi as he cut his way through the front four, getting his axe stuck in the last one.  Kheevee decided to provide backup to the Minotaur with magic missile barrages of her own against the Bozak as Zizi finally closed the distance between himself and the leader.  However, as he did, one last barrage struck the Bozak, whose body began to glow and pulsate, before exploding into a shower of bone and viscera.
“FUCK!  That's nasty! Why didn't he turn to stone?!?”
“Bozak.  I guess they explode...” Kheevee muttered as she walked over to the statue with the axe still stuck, poking at it.
“Move over, I got this...” Zizi said proudly as he gripped the handle of his axe, trying his best to free it, to no avail.  “This isn't going to be another tree door situation, is it?” Kheevee said with a slight whine, looking to Riki-teef to make sure she wasn't preparing another bomb.
Annette raised her hand as she moved to Zizi, healing him as she looked to the statue “It'll crumble in a few minutes, give it time...”
“But this means no items for Riki to find!”
“There's always the dust...”
“What use does dust have?!?”
“...Pocket dust?”
“Lizard's idea is bad and Lizard should feel bad!”
After resting for a few minutes as the statues crumbled, the party began to travel once more, albeit slightly more aware of their surroundings.  As a bush next to him began to shake, Zizi quickly stepped back as a small figure darted out with a knife, failing in it's ambush, but using its momentum to flee before it could be caught.
“Should we go after it?”
“No, it's already gone, let's just get to the town and get a room...”
Finally, a couple of hours later, as day slowly began to shift to night, the group arrived in the nearby town, finding the local tavern named the dancing wench. As they stepped indoors, they were greeted by a scream from the bartender.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?”
“Looking to get a room and get dry...” Zizi muttered as Kheevee quickly moved to the fireplace.
“Not that!  Who brings tigers into a tavern?!?”
Annette chuckled as the two tigers moved to the bar to look up to the frightened man “I do apparently.  They're harmless as long as you don't give me reason to change that...”
“L...look, you want rooms?  You can have rooms, just get them away from me!”
Annette whistled to the two, as they moved to either side of Kheevee to dry by the fire, Kheevee just being glad that they didn't share their owners distaste for her.  As the group paid for their rooms and meals, they moved up to their individual rooms to retire for the night.
However, a peaceful nights sleep was not to be in the cards.
The small figure returned in the dead of night, sneaking into each of the groups rooms.  As it reached Zizi's room, it went to stab him in his sleep, only to fail at penetrating his armour.  Realizing the target was still asleep however, it decided instead to steal the one thing it found more valuable than the ghost sword...  The statue.
As it entered Riki-teefs room, Riki-teef quickly woke up, scaring it into Kiruto's room.  Quickly seizing it's chance, it stabbed at Kiruto, wounding his side, before trying to flee once more, only to be shot from behind by the Kitsune.  As it rushed downwards, Kiruto caught up to Riki-teef on the landing as she shouted for the others, with Zizi and Annette quickly responding.
“Wait, is lizard still asleep?” She muttered as she moved into Kheevee’s room, only to find her nest of blankets soaked with blood.  As she quickly peeled away the layers, she found Kheevee unconscious, stabbed, and poisoned, yet stable.

I made this digital piece I made for my portfolio a while ago. I need to still work on armor shades and everything but for a first attempt, I’m pretty impressed!
This is my fighter Bozak Draconian, Faldorn. He explodes into a lightning attack when he dies instead of having a breath weapon like a normal Dragonborn. He's a bit of an interesting character as he's supposed to be hatched evil but he was raised good. His alignment is teetering as a Chaotic Neutral after his entire clan was wiped out. He's trying to be a good boy but he has pretty evil tendencies. Luckily, he has a little gnome friend to help keep him in line. (Her name is Nyx @ominouswalrus )
And he’s probably going to die in the next session @dmoftheapocalypse
