Translation: Boyang JIN: The young ace of China who broke the wall of the 2nd senior season. "This year's bronze medal is a real bronze medal."
(April 2017, at Worlds)
Boyang JIN (China) won his second consecutive bronze medal at Worlds 2017 after 2 clean programs. Last season, he grew up to be top class in his field using his 4Lz+3T as a strong weapon. We asked him about his second season in the senior field and his thoughts about next season.
His first time scoring over 300. "Satisfied about the performance itself rather than the score"
Tumblr media
- Congratulations on your bronze medal.
Thank you very much. - It's your second world bronze medal after last season, what's the difference between last season's and this season's?
Compared to last year's, I think this year's bronze medal is a real bronze medal. At last year's Worlds, I luckily got a bronze medals because of another skater's mistakes. But this year, I did a satisfying and good performance thanks to my own abilities. That's why I think it's a real bronze medal. When I look back at this season, it didn't go as well at the beginning. I worked hard to adjust to get till here. I want to tell myself, 'you worked hard'. - What was the reason you didn't have good results in the first half of the season?
The first reason why I wasn't in a good condition was because first, the time to prepare for a competition was very short and I was too busy so I wasn't able to be in perfect shape. And the other reason is because I was growing taller little by little and my body wasn't used to that growth yet.  And since I grew up, I changed boots before competition and it also took time to get used to those boots.  That's why I couldn't do good performances at the beginning. But I got used to those things, now that the season is ending. - It's good that you learned how to cope with those things. What about your score of 303.58? It's your first time scoring over 300.
The score is a personal best but this time, I'm more satisfied about the performance itself rather than the score. I challenged the elements one by one and completed them one by one, skated the best I could until the end. I'm satisfied about that.
"Spider-Man", a program that became his representative work.  Meeting Lori Nichol
Tumblr media
- Both the SP and FS had no mistakes and were wonderful performances. This year was the first time you skated to a program by Lori Nichol. Your SP "Spider-Man" is a very unique program that fits you.
"Spider-Man" is my favorite SP out all my past SP. It isn't classic (music) and the choreography fits me well. You can call it my representative work. The reactions of the public during my performance are very intense and I get the feeling that what I'm trying to communicate is getting through. That feels great even while I'm skating. - Your FS "La Strada" by Nino Rota is also a very delightful program. We can see different expressions in the SP and the FS.
I also like "La Strada" a lot. In the end, I was able to give many emotions to this program, whether it was intensity, happiness, or fun. There was a lot of change in my expressions too and I'm happy I was able to express such a difficult and famous piece. - Your impressions about your choreographer Lori Nichol?
What's amazing about Lori is that she choreographs exactly like the skater is. When I met her for the first time, she said to me "So your usual character is not like what you appear on TV." At the beginning of the season, to be honest, I didn't really like the fast tempo choreography in " La Strada". Lori said that part expresses an outgoing, positive side of me that she found. Meeting Lori made me have more fun skating.
-Is Lori Nichol your choreographer next season too?
Yes. - (We) can't wait to see what kind of programs they will be.
We haven't decided on what music I will skate to yet, but I want to try out many genres. I want to be able to win big titles by expressing them and become a very strong skater.
The pride of having started the high-level quad era. Re-challenging the quad loop next season.
Tumblr media
- You were the first skater to jump 4 quads in the FS last season. Your challenge led many other skaters to add other types of quads to their programs. How do you feel about that having given this opportunity?
I think my teacher (coach Zhaoxiao Xu) was the amazing one. Thanks to my teacher, I got the confidence that I could challenge things that I thought were impossible. I'm proud that I made current the quad era possible. I want to become even stronger to become a skater who represents China. - What about new quads?
I tried 4Lo this season, but it wasn't at all that great at 4CC in February. I landed them in practice but it didn't go well in competition. Since the beginning of the year, there was a few competitions between 4CC and Worlds, starting by AWG, and I am very physically tired so I stoppped practicing 4Lo once. But I want to re-challenging after the end of the season.
Training in hometown Harbin. Concentrating on practice on-ice.
Tumblr media
- Many of the team China athletes train in Beijing but you train in Harbin. What's the pros of training there?
I come from Harbin so I can be with my family and my friends, and I can also relax mentally. At Beijing, the team China representatives usually all stay at a dorm. Of course Beijing has better training facilities, but I prefer Harbin. Harbin can't provide much on-ice practice, about 1 hour and a half per day. But I get good practice. Training is physically quite demanding but I'm careful to not have any injuries and the ones training in Harbin are the same since I was small, so we have fun everyday. - Is there anyone at your level at your rink?
Mmh... (laughs) - So it's a place you can relatively train freely?
Yes.
This season's experience will connect to next season. "A perfect program at Pyeongchang"
Tumblr media
- If your physical abilities come from your parents who were track and field athletes, didn't they recommend you to do track and field?
Both my mother and my father used to be track and field athletes but they never told me to do track and field. My parents originally didn't have the intention to make me become an athlete. When I was small, I was a mischievous kid with a lot of energy and I didn't have much patience at school. (laughs) I went to see a figure skating competition at a rink in Harbin and then I started liking figure skating a lot. That's why my parents let me do figure skating. -Next season is the season of Pyeongchang Olympics. Please comment your past season and tell us about your ambition for next season.
Just as I told you earlier, I had a few issues at the beginning of the 2016-2017 season. In my first GP series at Skate America, I was 5th. I was very shocked about those results. But I grew up this season because there was so much going on. I think that was a good experience. What I experienced this season will connect to next season. I'm starting to understand how I should practice from now on, what I should work harder on. I want to work all I can towards Olympics, to be able to show a perfect program, a satisfying performance. - You said before that (you) "want to stand on both podiums, Pyeongchang Olympics in 2018 and Beijing Olympics in 2022." First, (we) will look forward to your performance next season.
Yes, thank you.

Russian and Chinese Skaters Show the World Their Programs
Russian and Chinese Skaters Show the World Their Programs
Senior Russian test skates include open skates; China streams the first of their Olympic qualifiers. There were no major competitions this week besides the JGP Riga Cup. Instead the biggest event of the weekend was the Russian test skate, which unlike most test skates, gave fans almost more videos of new programs than they could watch. And there was an internal competition in China, one where the…

Translation: AWG medalists
Shoma UNO: "I'm not satisfied"
- How was the competition overall?
Both the SP and the FS weren't good performances, but for the FS, I really wanted to try 3 combos, and at the end I ended up trying stuff I couldn't even do at practice (laughs). So it was generally good because I kept "attacking" till the very end.
- It was a win without Hanyu this time
I'm happy about the results (the win), but if I had won the title by doing my best, I would've been sincerely happy. Both SP and FS weren't necessarily good so I'm happy about the results but I'm not satisfied. Whether Yuzuru-kun is there or not, I'm still frustrated that I couldn't give my best performance in competition. But the results make me happy nonetheless.
- What about the competition being held in Japan?
I think it's my first time participating in an international competition in Japan. But I didn't have any special feelings, just that there was no time difference and it was a very good atmosphere for a competition and it helped me have a better condition. It wasn't my best, but I'm happy to have good results.
- What about adjusting to AWG, and your motivation regarding the competition?
I couldn't control my feelings well during SP, I ended up not concentrating while competing. During FS, I felt good, but I failed jumps. Otherwise, I think I did well in adjusting my condition during the day in between. It was an Asian competition, and not and international one, and I had a good experience and it was really fun.
Boyang JIN: "It was a special competition"
- How was the competition overall?
I had two mistakes in SP and FS, but it was generally satisfying performances.
- What about adjusting to AWG right after 4CC, and your motivation regarding the competition?
4CC wasn't an ideal competition (for me). I of course did my best to do everything I could, but I regret not being able to give out what I had practiced. Compared to 4CC, I was relatively calm going into AWG and I was able to get back a peace of mind. It was my first Asian, so in that way it was a special competition. Of course there was the lack of practice, but I am very satisfied with this competition. I want to make use of this experience to do my best towards Pyeongchang Olympics.
Han YAN: "The competition where I regained my confidence"
- How was the competition overall?
There wasn't any problems overall, and I'm generally satisfied. Lately I wasn't at my best, this time I feel like I'm back to my usual self and that's mostly what makes me happy.
- How did practicing in US affect you?
First, living in US was a challenge for me. Going there alone, without translator or manager, and to manage my living there alone made me mature mentally. Going back to Beijing after all I've went through in US made me appreciate life in Beijing more.
Regarding practice, skaters in US have a lot of professionalism even in practice, and I have a lot of respect for them. Seeing them having a lot of professionalism and facing things with a lot ambition taught me a lot of things, and I think I still have a lot to learn (from them).
- What about adjusting to AWG and your motivation regarding the competition?
I think I was able to do my best in this Asian competition. Lately I wasn't doing well and there was a time I really felt down. I had a lot of mistakes, and there was a time I was scared of the rink no matter which rink I was on. I was scared and it was hard to face the sport properly. But this time I was able to perform just the way I did in practice, so in a way it is the competition where I regained my confidence.
