I might be opening Pandora's box now, but I'm kinda curious...what is boxgate?

(you don't have to answer it if you don't want to I understand)

Boxgate refers to the incident in which @rosy-crow and I stayed up to 5 AM watching an early leaked stream of FFVII Rebirth.

It was specifically the part of the game in which the player plays as Cait Sith and is stuck in Hojo's underground Nibelheim lab chucking cardboard boxes at random platforms. It is the worst part in the entire game. Crow and I were legitimately becoming very deranged, both from sleep deprivation and general late night hysteria.

Hojo created a new breed of torture. And it begins and ends with those goddamn boxes.

the original trilogy is so well written that looking at tsc I'm like?? what happened?? so many writing choices that I think are just plain bad.

a portion of the book being the last 3rd of the Kings men? why??? we don't even learn anything rlly new about the characters. angst just for the sake of it. not having Jean mention he has a sister for almost the whole book just to have a reveal at the end - and I'm supposed to believe he cares about her?? this mf didn't even google her name in months. skipping scenes of Jean bonding with and developing a relationship and history with new characters... WHY. why just tell me he went shopping or cooking with them. SHOW ME. one of the best andreil scenes is when they're shopping at that damn exy shop. so engaging and so much tension when Andrew almost reveals he likes neil. and now I'm just being told characters are shopping after the fact ☹️ and I'm bombarded by fanservice and endless descriptions of jean ogling characters. I don't CARE about cutout dogs or chairs or yo-yos! they're not replacements for characters actually having a personality 😭😭

I remember you told me you watched everything on twitch with a friend like the day it release or just the day before. It was like a marathon and you were so much sleep deprived and tired too XD (I think we all had the same reaction to the fucking boxes 🤣)

Playing it myself without spoils was a crazy ass experience too. I finally had figured out how to remote play on my computer in my room (bc well roommates) so everytime I was free, I played it! And finished it in just 2 weeks. Even after playing OG it was phenomenal. Not perfect but still a good game with incredible story driven moments and characters.

You might remember our chat in dm each time I had a big playing session. And omg the final act when I played until 3am.... (should I stop after the temple of the ancients? Nope straight to the end!) Incredible.

I only got to play through it once on a friend’s console and now everything for me is so DIFFERENT. But lowkey, this fandom and the hype around that game got me through 2024. I’m really grateful for that because I can’t explain how unstable and constantly moving my life has been lmao.

It WAS a great game, absolutely. Beautiful and big….such good music that I’m still listening to….

Gonna be honest, the required minigame that drove me absolutely nuts in Rebirth was Cait Sith's throw the boxes one. 📦

I’m honestly shocked Boobgate 2: The Boobening hasn’t happened yet because 1) Rey is wearing an even tighter, bright white top this time around, 2) will be in the rain in it, and 3) will confirmed be in the rain right in front of Ben in those clothes, unlike last time around when that was just a fake leak

The Episode IX marketing worries - What if...?

1. It’ll be revealed that the relations between Rey and a character played by Keri Russell or Naomi Ackie will be very important to the plot (in Keri Russell’s case it'll be clear that she won’t play Rey’s mother). The so-called-progressive side of the fandom and some mainstream media (or just The Mary Sue) will speculate that Rey will turn out to be a lesbian and have a romance with this character.

2. The Boxgate 2.0 will happen after the teaser trailer starts with Poe breathing and the trio discourse comes back. The ants will be obnoxious as never and claim it’s the proof that Kylo will die unredeemed. 

3. The teaser trailer will start with Finn and Rey breathing separately. The f1nnrey anti-reylos will be obnoxious as ever and claim that f1nnrey is canon. Rose who?

I won’t mind if the teaser trailer will start with Rose breathing

4. The teaser will show at least one scene featuring Rey with Poe and/or Finn, but none with Rey and Kylo or with Finn and Rose.

5. Lack of Kylo in the teaser traiser.

6. Lack of Rose in the teaser trailer.

Am I the only one slightly annoyed by the fact that LF's marketing strategy for the ST exaggerates certain elements and focuses on things that don't have much to do with their actual narrative? Like, those trio pictures on all merchandise are misleading because the three of them don't interact as a group in either of the two films. Then there's a masked Kylo everywhere despite his mask not even being on his face most of the time in the films, unlike Vader's. Looks like nostalgia-baiting to me.

Gotta be honest, but I don’t pay attention enough to merchandise marketing to know or really care. I don’t think it matters all that much. People who are responsible for marketing are almost never even remotely in the same department as the people responsible for the film. Usually the creatives have no say over the marketing, and the marketing department doesn’t have access to the script or the dailies or anything. It’s a total non-issue imo. Of course they will do whatever they think will move the most product, which naturally includes nostalgia baiting when applicable– though not always. Is it really that surprising that they marketed Ben as a scary masked villain during the TFA run when that was what they wanted the audience to think and when they were trying to make him out to be this trilogy’s Vader? I don’t begrudge them for that. (And I don’t remember a lot of that happening for TLJ product tbh.) It’s kind of people’s own funeral (read: boxgate) if they literally think merchandising decisions are a good or even logical way to interpret a film.
