The camera will soon be available from his blog, Pinbox. In the latest model, Lee 3D printed all of the internal camera components which has fewer light leaks and a tripod mount. SAFE (1,2) ITEM EXAMPLES: BAG OF FERTILIZER+, BASEBALL BAT, BATTERED CLIPBOARD, BINOCULARS, BOBBY PIN BOX, BOWLING PIN, CAMERA, CIGAR BOX, COFFEE CUP. As he improved on the design, Lee learned to solder and created an external brass carrier and advance spool. For the first, he used anything he could find including a sewing thread bobbin, bottle top, and radiator key-all stuck together with tape and glue. The current model of the sardine camera is Lee’s fifth version.

To increase the exposure time while maintaining the charm of the simple sardine tin concept, Lee decided to use ISO 50 film and a 0.12mm pinhole from an acupuncture pin. A short focal length equals a short exposure time, which would mean that the pinhole would be too large and would overexpose the image. The tin’s lack of depth presented a challenge in determining focal length and exposure time. The pinhole camera uses 35mm film and measures about 100mm wide, 60mm tall, and 22mm deep. As it turned out, a real sardine tin is much too small for a proper camera. He created his Sardine Tin Pinhole Camera partly in response to Lomography’s Sardinia 35mm toy camera, thinking it could be improved if made with an actual sardine tin. chocolate kisses - t.h
Tumblr media
pairing: bestfriend!tom x youtuber!reader
words: 2.9k
warnings: none, just pure fluff
a/n: so... i did it again!!! i had this ideia after watching a video like this from one of my favorite youtubers. anyway, i really hope you guys enjoy and please do let me know what you think!! again, english is not my first language so that’s that. thank you @definitely-not-black-cat for proofreading this, you’re the best and i love you 💛 enjoy!!!!!!
You adjusted the lenses of your camera one more time, making sure everything was ready to start recording. Since you started making videos for the internet and became a youtuber, you were practically obligated to learn about filmography. Sometimes you had your friend Harry around to help, since he’s a professional but today he got a job to do, so you were on your own. In fact, you had another Holland around, the oldest of them all and your best friend since you were kids, Tom.
Ever since you made your youtube channel, your viewers have been begging you to bring Tom to a video, so when the opportunity came, you finally asked him and he was more than happy to accept.
“You ready?” You asked your brown haired friend.
“Yep!” He said, making sure to really pop the “p”, knowing you hated when he did that.
“Tom, I was being serious earlier. I need you to behave!” You said, feeling like you were talking to a child instead of a 24 year old.
But that was the thing about your friendship with Tom, when you guys were together it felt like time hasn’t passed at all and you were still two little kids, doing stupid things and constantly misbehaving.
“I got this! Don’t worry!” Tom answered, a smile wide on his face.
“Saying not to worry actually makes me worry even more, you know?” You huffed, making sure the memory card was in.
“It’ll be fine, y/n! I promise!” He said, looking at you with those big brown eyes that made you forget what you were even asking.
“Okay, I’m going to start!” You told, seeing him clap his hands excitedly, but the years of friendship had taught you that this was just a thing he did when he was actually nervous. “And go!” You said, pressing the record button and joining your friend behind the kitchen island, where you had all the ingredients for the recipe already measured.
“Hey everyone, welcome back to another video! This week we have another one of the baking series and if you couldn’t already see, I have a guest with me today. Ladies and gentlemen, the star of the moment and my very own best friend, Tom Holland!” You said enthusiastically, while he observed you with a big smile on his face.
“Hello everybody, I’m Tom and I’m really excited to be here today!” He said, giving a little wave at the camera.
“Today we’re making a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. This is one of my absolute favorites and it’s actually your mom’s recipe, that she was kind enough to pass me so I could share it.” You explained, looking at your friend.
“I love this cake! Mum used to make it when we were kids but suddenly she stopped doing it, saying we were too grown up.” Tom pouted to the camera, making you laugh.
“Well, it’s your lucky day because we’re gonna start making it right now. You ready?” You asked, seeing him nod, looking at all the ingredients in front of him. “I know it seems like a lot but this cake it’s actually pretty easy and quick to make, just take a little while on the oven.” You explained, knowing he probably thought it was way too difficult for him to make a cake like that.
“Great! Where do we start?” Tom said excitedly, which again made you laugh.
“Okay, the first step is always preheat your oven, in this case at 180 ºC, for at least fifteen minutes before putting the cakes in. Then we can start creaming together the butter and sugar. I’m using a stand mixer today but you can totally use a hand one. It’ll work perfectly fine.” You said, pointing to the ingredients.
“This is such a pretty mixer, y/n! I wonder who could have given you something like that.” The boy beside you pointed to your pink Kitchenaid with a smirk on his face. “It was you, dumbass!” You said, shoving his shoulder.
“Wow, I’m such a good friend!” The smirk on his face grew even more, seeing you rolling your eyes at his antics. “Can you stop praising yourself and start making the cake?” You pleaded.
Tom nodded and after you told the camera the ingredients and correct measurements, he put them in the mixer, looking confused when he couldn’t find the buttons.
“It’s on the side, Tom!” You told him with a laugh, showing exactly how to do it.
While the butter and sugar creamed together, you took the time to observe your friend, who seemed completely entertained with it. A couple minutes passed and when everything was looking good, you told him to stop the mixer, so you didn’t have to shout at the camera.
“When you mix those two together, you can start adding your eggs, one at a time. Always remember to crack them on a separate bowl, to make sure you don’t ruin your mixture with a bad one.” At that, Tom’s eyes light up, as if you had said the most clever thing in the world. “You can turn the mixer on low while I’m adding the eggs.” You instructed Tom, who nodded and made exactly that.
“This is looking gross!” He said to you once he turned the mixer off.
“Yeah, it does not look pretty when you put the eggs in but as soon as we put the flour, it’ll all be fine.” You reassure him. “Also, stopping the mixer and scraping down the sides of the bowl will help everything incorporate much better.” You advised, giving a pink rubber spatula to your friend, so he could do what you just said.
“Still look gross!” Tom scrunched his face, making you laugh.
“Stop it, we’re going to add the rest of the ingredients now.” You scolded, which caused him to pout at you. “We’re going to put 1 tablespoon of baking powder, 1 teaspoon of bicarb, a pinch of salt and 1 cup of cocoa powder into the flour and mix it really well before alternating this with the buttermilk. Got it?” You asked him, making sure he understood your instructions.
“So, baking powder, bicarb, salt, cocoa powder, mixing really well.” He kept narrating his moves, which you found adorable.
“Okay, now we have to put the mixer on the lowest speed, otherwise we’ll have flour everywhere. And don’t look at me like that, we DO NOT want flour everywhere, Thomas!” The smirk plastered on his face was the same one of a child before doing something they shouldn’t be doing.
“I swear I didn’t think of doing that, y/n/n!” He stated, putting his arms up in surrender.
“Yeah, right! Like I didn’t know you for twenty four years.” You rolled your eyes, making him laugh.
Once he turned the machine back on, you slowly started to add the flour, followed by half of the buttermilk, more flour, more buttermilk and finally the rest of the dry mixture.
“Perfect! Now we can turn off the mixer and scrape the sides one more time, then turn back on for about a minute or so, just to make sure everything is really well combined.” You said smiling.
“That’s it?” Tom asked, as soon as you took the bowl out of the mixer. “That’s it, the batter is done! Easy, right?” You said and he nodded. “Now we can divide the batter into three separate pans that I already greased and lined with baking paper.”
“Baking paper?” He questioned, seemingly confused.
After explaining to him what baking paper was, you proceeded to put the batter equally into the pans.
Just as he was about to lick the spatula, you swatted his hand, making him wince. “Don’t eat that!” You exclaimed. “Why?” Tom asked.
“It has raw eggs and flour. It’s not safe!” You told him, sounding obvious. “Fine, I won’t.” He promised, putting the bowl and spatula aside.
With the pans ready, you told the camera you were going to put them in the oven, for about 40min or until a toothpick came out clean. While you were away, Tom looked right at the camera and sneakily gave the spatula a good lick, scrunching his face at the taste of raw batter. When you came back, you rolled your eyes at your friend.
“What?” He questioned, trying not to sound guilty. “Was it good?” You asked him with a smirk.
“What?” He repeated himself. “The batter, was it good?” You laughed, seeing him widen his eyes. “How do you know?” He asked, confused.
“You have some on your face, silly!” You said, throwing a towel at him. Tom flushed, feeling embarrassed for being caught. “It wasn’t even good!” Tom said, cleaning his face. “I told you!” You laugh at his scrunched face.
“Okay, now we’re going to clean this up and wait for the cakes to bake, then we’ll come back and make the icing.” You told him, walking to the camera and stopping the filming. “You’re such an idiot!” You tell your friend, making him laugh.
Even after you denied, Tom insisted on helping, but his help ended with him splashing and playing with water more than actually washing the dishes. When you finally got the kitchen cleaned, the timer of the oven went off, indicating the cakes were ready.
While the cakes cooled, you prepared the ingredients for the icing, which consisted in butter, icing sugar and melted chocolate. Once everything was ready, you joined Tom on the couch, where he scrolled through instagram on his phone.
“What are you looking at?” You asked plopping down next to him. “The comments on my last post.” He said, looking at you.
“Yeah? What is it?” You questioned, looking at your own phone, seeing a brand new notification. “It was you.” Tom answered plainly.
“What?” You almost yelled, quickly clicking on the instagram app, where you found a picture of you taking the cakes out of the oven. “Tom!” You exclaimed, sending an annoyed look at you friend.
“What? Everyone’s saying you look good!” He told you, making you groan. “Yeah, gorgeous!” You mocked.
“Oh, there’s one saying you have a great ass!” He smirked. “Thomas!” You send him a reproving look. “Not my words, darling!” He shrugged, the smirk he wore growing even bigger.
“They’re also saying we’ll make a cute couple.” Tom smiled, looking at you and catching your eye. “As if, Holland! As if!” You mocked, getting up from the couch and making your way back to the kitchen to check your cakes, while his eyes stayed on your body.
“You know what? They were right! You do have a great ass!” He smirked. “Can you stop being a flirt and help me finish this cake?” You asked, not believing the words that left his mouth.
Once your annoying friend joined you, you hit the play button again and started recording. “We’re back!” You said enthusiastically. “We’re back!” Tom repeated, making you laugh.
“Our cakes are baked and cooled, I’ve put them in the fridge now, just to make sure they’re completely cold when we put the icing, which we’re going to start making now.” You said to the camera, followed by the ingredients and correct measurements. “Once again, we’re using a stand mixer, but just as the cake, a hand mixer will also work. Now Tom, you can put the butter and sugar in the mixer, but be careful with the icing sugar, it’s very powdery and can go everywhere, so start at a lower speed and just go up when it’s fully incorporated.” You warned him.
“Right, boss!” He mocked, making you playfully hit his arm. “While you do this, I’m going to melt the chocolate, okay?” You asked and he nodded.
Just as you turned around to put the bowl in the microwave, you heard your mixer going on full speed. The sight that greeted you once you turned back to your friend, was unbelievable. Tom was covered with powdered sugar, from head to toes, his curls where white with the powder and the look on his face was one of pure regret.
“It really does go everywhere!” He said looking guilty.
“I can’t believe it, how old are you? 5?” You rolled your eyes.
“I’m old enough to do this!” Tom said before jumping at you and wrapping his arms around your body. “Tom!” You yelled, getting out of his grip.
“Now we’re equal!” The brunette winked, making your blood boil.
“You idiot! You know we’re gonna have to clean this mess, right?” You questioned, shaking some of the icing sugar from your clothes.
“It was worth it!” Tom laughed and hearing that sound made you chuckle too.
After a little bit of tidying up in the kitchen, you started recording again, this time hopeful that you could finally finish the cake.
“Now that the butter and sugar mixture is light and fluffy, we can add the melted chocolate and mix everything really well.” You informed, both Tom and the camera in front of you.
Tom helped you with the chocolate and after mixing the icing for a couple of minutes, you passed him a spatula to scrape the bowl and make sure everything was well combined. But, just as you were about to take the spatula back from his hands, he put it in his mouth, licking a stripe of the chocolate icing.
“Tom!!! Not the spatula that you’re mixing the frosting!!!” You yelled, seeing him roll his eyes. “Why not?” Asked the brunette.
“I’m going to eat that cake too!” You exclaimed, sounding obvious. “Oh, c’mon! It’s not like we never shared saliva before.” Tom smirked.
“You know I’m gonna have to cut this part off of the video, right?” You questioned, shaking your head at his cockiness. “Why?” He insisted, not taking that stupidly handsome smirk out of his face.
“Your fans already think that we’re a couple, they don’t need to know that we drunk kissed at my twentieth birthday party.” You stated, shaking your head to try and get rid of the memorie.
“Whatever, I think they would like it!” Tom winked, giving the spatula another lick. “Oh, they sure would!” You said, taking the object out of his hands and putting in the sink.
Back to the recipe, Tom helped you put the icing stuff away and bring the now cooled cakes, a knife, a cake stand and of course, a clean spatula to start icing it.
“Now with a clean spatula…” You said, glancing at your friend, that couldn’t help but laugh.
After filling the cakes, you helped him spread more chocolate icing on the sides and the top, before putting some sprinkles.
“It’s finished!” You screamed, making Tom laugh. “It looks really good. Can we eat?” He asked with hopeful eyes.
“Wait! I have to take some pictures first!” You warned, before taking your camera and snapping a few shots of the finished cake.
Once you were done, you finally let him slice the cake, putting the piece on a plate for you guys to try. “This cake it’s so good!” Tom moaned, taking another bite.
“It’s so moist and the icing is not too sweet. It’s just… perfect!” You agreed, also going for another bite, but Tom was quick to playfully take the plate away from you.
“Well, that was it! I hope you guys like the recipe and try to make it at home because it’s delicious. Thank you again for joining me today and helping with the cake, Tom!” You smiled, looking at your friend.
“Of course, thank you for inviting me and you guys for requesting this video.” He said, smiling at the camera.
“Don’t forget to subscribe and like this video, also leave your comments down below letting me know what other recipe you guys want me to make. I’ll see you next week. Bye!” You said waving at the camera, followed by Tom.
Once you finally finished recording, you and Tom got each one another piece of cake and went to sit on the sofa, where you eat it while watching some tv show.
Your attention was brought away from the show once you heard Tom lightly chuckled beside you.
“What?” You asked, already knowing he was up to something.
“You have chocolate on your mouth.” He said, pointing at your face.
“Of course I have chocolate on my mouth, I’m eating a freaking chocolate cake.” You rolled your eyes.
“No, I mean… outside of your mouth. Here, let me help you.” Tom offered, getting face to face with you.
And of course, just when you thought he was going to clean your face and just forget about it, he surprises you once again, this time taking you by the neck and sealing your lips together.
You were so startled that your first instinct was to fight, but once you realized the familiarity of his lips, you relaxed and kissed him back. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long but you’d be lying if you said it didn’t leave you wanting more.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done this…” Tom, being the gentleman he was, started to ramble and apologize for what he had done but you just rolled your eyes.
“Just shut up!” You smiled, leaning back in and kissing him again.
You knew that you two would have a lot to talk about after this but right now, all that you wanted were more of those chocolate kisses.

Complete Guide to Weight Loss
From a glance, weight loss is simple. Eat less and move more. But it’s actually a lot more complex than that. First of all, I would like to say that weight loss is 70% diet and 30% exercise. You can work out for 60 minutes each day, but if you still eat like shit, you will not lose weight. On the other hand, if you don’t exercise at all and eat less, you will lose weight. But to maximize the full potential of your weight loss, and to gain health, fitness, and self confidence, you should incorporate both. Think of it as a lifestyle change. This isn’t some 3-month crash diet so you can fit into the dress for prom, only to regain the weight in a matter of weeks. You want to create healthy habits you can have for LIFE.
I’m not going to lie: weight loss is hard. It’s probably one of the hardest things you’ll ever do in your life. Which is why if you have a set-back, you have to keep on pushing. You’ll laugh, cry, and will want to give up at times, but I guarantee end result will be worth all the effort.
Setting realistic goals Calories Diet Healthy foods list Exercise Bingeing Staying motivated Weighing yourself Plateau Targeting fat loss Why do it the healthy way? Anything else?
Setting realistic goals You are way more likely to succeed in weight loss if you set realistic goals. A perfectly healthy rate of weight loss is 1-3 pounds a week. The heavier you are when you begin, the more weight you’ll lose. Anything more than 3 pounds a week without medical supervision means that you are probably losing muscle mass as well. So no, losing 50 pounds in a month is probably not an attainable goal. Instead of thinking “Oh my god I have to lose 30 pounds in 4 months how am I ever going to start!”, divide up your goal into mini ones. Aim for 5-10 pounds a month, and soon it will seem less daunting. Make sure your ultimate goal weight is also something that you body can reach. For example, if you’re 5'8’’ with a large frame, you’ll probably never be 100 pounds unless you resort to unhealthy methods. Your health is more important than how thin you are!
Calories One pound of fat is 3500 calories. You can eat a certain amount of calories a day without gaining any weight, and this is called the recommended daily intake. Use this to calculate your RDI (it’s the maintenance one). To lose weight, you have to create a calorie deficit. Let’s say your RDI is 2000 calories a day. If you eat 500 calories less per day, that adds up to 3500 calories less in the whole entire week, which means one pound of weight loss! If you consume 1000 calories less a day (which I don’t recommend unless your RDI is 2200+), that means 7000-calorie deficit throughout the week, which equates to 2 pounds lost. Depending on your current weight and exercise level, you should aim to eat around 250-750 calories below your RDI each day. Never eat below 1000-1200 calories because you won’t be getting the adequate nutrition that you need, you’ll lose your energy, and your metabolism will start slowing down. You can burn calories from exercise too! I’ll go more into that later. On days where you exercise, eat slightly more to replenish the energy you lose from exercise. Should you count calories while losing weight? That’s a question I get a lot. I used to count calories religiously, but I found that it didn’t work for me. Try counting calories for 2 weeks. If it’s something you like, continue with it. If you don’t like it, stop. This way you will know what a 1200, 1500, or 1800 (etc.) calorie day looks like. This site is great for figuring out how much weight you’ll lose depending on your starting weight, exercise, and caloric intake. It’s pretty accurate. Myfitnesspal is a great site if you want to count calories. It has every single food imaginable and a lot of exercises. It’s also an app! It calculates how many calories you need to eat and how much you need to burn from exercise to reach your goal weight. It’s customized to your height, age, gender, and weight.
Diet The following are some great tips I found while I was losing weight. You can use as many as you like. The bolded ones are the most important 1. Cut out junk/processed food as much as you can. 2. Drink 8 cups of water a day. Water flushes out toxins and keeps you full. 3. No liquid calories! Or cut them down as much as possible. They add up so much without being filling. Water and tea are your new best friends. 4. Eat in moderation. If you want that cookie, have ONE and be done with it. If you eliminate all your favorite foods, you will be more likely to lose self-control and binge. 5. Are you at a restaurant and don’t know how to eat healthy? Here are some good tips. 6. Whole grains instead of white/enriched grains. Why? Because they don’t have the fibre and nutrients completely stripped from them. Fibre fills you up a lot! 7. Eat LOTS of fruits and vegetables. They are full of nutrition and very calorie light. 8. Eat protein. Protein is the most filling of all the macronutrients (carbs, fat, protein). Good sources of protein are chicken, turkey, beef, fish, eggs, legumes, and nuts. Google for more! 9. Eat slowly. It takes several minutes for the feeling of being full to reach your brain. 10. DO NOT EAT IF YOU’RE NOT HUNGRY. Do not ever feel like you’re obligated to eat anything. 11. Use a smaller plate. It gives the illusion that you’re eating more food. 12. Measure out what you’re eating. You don’t have to do it every single time you eat something, but do it once so you have an idea of what a serving size actually is. For example, chances are you’re pouring more than a recommended serving of one cup of cereal. 13. Limit, if not eliminate all “extras” like butter, mayonnaise, ketchup, dressing, added sugar, added oil, etc. 14. Eat breakfast! There have been so many studies done that show that people who eat breakfast lose more weight. It kickstarts your metabolism for the day and you’re less likely to binge later. 15. Don’t eat mindlessly while watching the TV, on the computer, or doing other activity. Be very aware of what you eat. 16. Keep a food journal so you can be accountable. 17. Don’t eat out of a bottomless bag. Scoop one serving into a bowl and eat from that. 18. WHATEVER YOU DO, DON’T STARVE YOURSELF. Your body will not live on 200 calories a day just because you told it to. There are so many adverse psychological and physical effects of starvation. You will be more likely to be depressed, get an eating disorder,  lose your health, and develop unhealthy habits for the rest of your life. Your body needs energy (food) to survive. Don’t think of food as something you need to eliminate. Food is just food. It’s not your friend, nor is it your enemy.
Healthy Food List Whole grains- bread, pasta, tortillas, wraps, oatmeal Meat- skinless chicken and turkey, fish, lean beef, shrimp, seafood, eggs Vegetables- every single vegetable. I especially like spinach, lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cucumber, squash, celery, legumes, nuts (in moderation because they’re high calorie despite their nutritional benefits) and sweet potatoes Fruits- every single fruit. I especially like bananas, apples, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, raspberries, watermelon, and peaches. Dairy – skim milk, light cheese, yogurt Fat - Nuts, tuna, avocado
Exercise It is best to exercise at least 4 times a week for at least 30 minutes each time to lose weight. Cardio exercise is what burns fat (anything that gets your heart rate up) and burns calories. That’s where you can subtract calories from your daily intake. Here’s a calories burned calculator. The most effective cardio workouts are running, biking, dancing, and swimming (just to name a few). Aim for at least 15 minutes of cardio each time you work out. You should also do some strength training. This can be lifting weights, doing crunches, lunges, squats, pushups, bicep curls… (google for more workouts). Though they burn less calories, they do build muscle. This is important because one pound of muscle takes up less space than one pound of fat, giving the illusion of even more weight loss! Plus muscle burns more calories than fat when you’re sitting still. And muscles will eliminate the skinny-flabby look. People who exercise burn more calories simply existing than people who don’t. In essence, working out burns calories, which increases your standing metabolism, burning more calories! SO GET OFF YOUR BUM AND MOVE. If you have time to tumblr you have time to work out! Remember the times I give are the bare MINIMUM. What I find most effective is 30+ minutes of cardio and 30+ minutes of strength training in one workout, 5 times a week.
Bingeing So you’ve just binged. What now? First you have to accept that what’s in the past is done. You ate the extra food and now you feel guilty. Let go of the guilt! There is no point in worrying about things you can’t change. 1. Do not purge. This creates a terrible cycle of bingeing/purging and can lead to an eating disorder. Purging is also extremely unhealthy towards your body, causing stomach ulcers, tooth decay, esophagus problems, and a lot more. 2. Do not starve yourself. This also creates a cycle of bingeing/starvation. Remember, just because you eat significantly less the next day does not make it “okay” for you to binge! 3. Eat as healthy as you can. Your body will be in need of nutrients after you binge on unhealthy food. Consume fruits and vegetables because they won’t bloat you as much as carbs. Resume your regular eating pattern! 4. Exercise the next day. You don’t need to overdo it with exercise either, just do some cardio to speed your metabolism up. (Nothing too extreme, remember resume your regular lifestyle) 5. After a binge you can gain anywhere from 1lb-10lbs. Most of this is probably just water weight! Carbs and salty foods make your body retain a lot of water. One pound of fat is 3500 calories, and unless you ate 5000+ calories the day before, you didn’t actually gain a pound! 6. Drink water. As odd as it seems, the more water you drink, the more water weight you’ll lose. 7. Recognize why you binged. Was it because you were sad? Stressed? Bored? Socializing? Once you start identifying these factors you can go towards solving the root problem of the binge. 8. Forgive yourself. Recognize that it’s okay to make mistakes and that you’re just human. Will one binge really matter in the scope of things? No. As long as you don’t make bingeing a habit, the weight will come off in no time. How to avoid binges   1. Eat enough on a day to day basis. Make sure you’re not restricting your calories too much. Your body will start thinking that it’s in a period of starvation and will do ANYTHING it can to get extra food. 2. Don’t cut off entire food groups/your favourite foods completely. The more forbidden something is, the more you’ll crave it. 3. This goes hand in hand with the previous rule. If you crave a piece of chocolate, have it! A lot of times people will think, “Oh I really want chocolate. But that’ll ruin my diet! So I’ll just have a healthy granola bar… wow I’m still not satisfied. Maybe I’ll have another granola bar. But it’s not sweet enough! I think I’ll have some cereal with that too. And some milk. And some more sugary cereal.” And before they know it, they’ll have consumed MUCH more than if they had just had the piece of chocolate in the first place and squashed that craving! And most people end up having the food they craved by the end of their binge anyway. 4. Avoid emotions that trigger your binge. Call a friend, go for a walk, have a bath… do something that occupies your mind when you feel like bingeing!
Staying Motivated Sometimes you’ll want to skip a workout or you’ll want to eat a whole entire pizza. Weight loss is hard. Whenever I lost motivation, I thought of all the reasons why I wanted to lose weight. Create your own list of reasons why you’d like to lose weight and remind yourself of them often. When you’re about to veer off track, just think of how absolutely healthy, slim, fit, and awesome you’ll be once you reach your ultimate goal weight. (Note: these reasons should be motivated by something within yourself like to get healthier, not to impress your friends. It’s much easier to lose motivation when you’re losing weight to prove something to someone else instead of finding happiness for yourself). Also, awarding yourself for reaching mini-goals is another great way of motivation (clothes, photoshoot, trip, concert, etc). Have a support group. Studies have shown that people who lose weight with others are more successful than people who don’t. If your family and friends aren’t supportive of your weight loss, that’s where tumblr comes in! You can also join a fitness class (yoga, dance, swimming, karate, wall climbing… what have you ALWAYS wanted to do?) so you have to work out. If you have some extra cash, invest in a gym membership as well. Or maybe even get a personal trainer? Don’t give up if you screw up: you will regret it. A slip up is minor in the whole picture of things. Of course there’s going to be failure, but you have to get back up and keep fighting. It’s hard, but the end effort IS worth it. Years from now, will you be healthy and slim or will you have given up and fallen back into your old unhealthy ways? It’s your choice.
Weighing Yourself It’s best to weigh yourself once a week, but once a day is okay too. Seriously, don’t weigh yourself once every few hours. Weight fluctuations of up to 10lbs throughout the day/week are very normal! Your weight will fluctuate due to your period, water retention from excess carbs/salt, last time you ate, time of day, last time you pooped/peed, being sick, exercise, muscle gain, and so many other factors. You’re less likely to lose motivation when you focus on the overall trend in weight loss, not the individual weigh ins.
Plateau Hitting a plateau sucks. It happens to almost everyone when they lose weight. To combat/avoid it, you have to keep your exercise and diet varied. If you get good at one exercise, your body begins to adapt to it and you no longer burn as many calories. Try lengthening the time of your workouts or the intensity of them. Or try a new exercise altogether! For food, you can try calorie cycling, which is basically where you eat different amounts of calories a day, but the weekly average is still the same. It’s supposed to trick your body’s metabolism. I’ve never tried it so I can’t attest to its usefulness but it’s worked for other people. Also try eating new foods! And varying the amount of food you have for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Jillian Michaels (who is a fabulous fitness guru, if you haven’t heard of her) advises for people to increase the calories they’re eating and take rest from working out for a few days to break plateaus. This reminds tells the body “Oh hey you’re not actually starving so you can lose some fat!” I know it sounds counterintuitive but that’s how I broke through my plateau. It’s worked for a lot of other people too. You may also be at a point where your body no longer wants to lose weight and it’s doing all it can to keep onto the necessary fat. Yes, fat is necessary for your survival. Keep your goals realistic. You may also be eating too much. 1700 calories a day may have made you lose weight when you were 200 pounds, but it won’t create a big deficit when you’re at 130 pounds. Try eating a bit less, but don’t starve yourself. Make sure you’re not sneaking calories in by adding extra pats of butter, too much salad dressing, underestimating portion sizes, etc.
Targeting Fat Loss It is impossible to target fat loss. You can’t decide to lose weight only from your stomach. It is your genetics that determines where the weight comes off first. A combination of cardio and healthy eating will lead to overall fat loss. Strength training will tone the area up though, making it tighter!
Why do it the healthy way? The healthy way is slow, hard, and painful. You could always just starve yourself and get the same results faster. But you know what? If you lose weight that way, you risk losing your physical and psychological health, self-confidence, relationships, and happiness too. Love your body, treat it right, and the weight will come off. It’s as simple as that.

The Cheesy Truth
There is a lot of smoke and mirrors in the food business. Unless you are dining at a place like Ponderosa Steakhouse in the 1970s, the cafeteria-style restaurant that let us see our steaks being grilled before our very eyes, we have no idea what goes on behind the counter.
And to mix in another metaphor for good measure, it’s a lot like the Wizard Of Oz. What the Wizard is doing behind the curtain is anyone’s guess. Except, of course, when one of your employees happens to spill the beans on social media.
Which is exactly what just happened to Panera when one of their finest shot and posted a video of how their cult-favorite mac-and-cheese is prepared, and posted it on social media app TikTok.
Tumblr media
We customers fall for the implicit myth that everything served to us was hand-prepared by artisanal bakers and chefs who favor locally-sourced meats and vegetables. No doubt every time you order a bowl of this steaming goodness, workers head to the wheat fields out back, scythe in hand, to harvest more grain, then separate the wheat from the chaff, mill it, shape it, and cook it into uniform little elbow macaronis. And if it is October, you have to wait until late-May for the stalks of grain to mature.
This, of course, after others had retreated to the corporate dairy to milk the cows, pasteurize the liquid of life, and process it into yummy cheese to be melted and drizzled over said noodles in a bowl of decadence. Oh, the humanity. The payroll must be enormous.
Or, as in the case of Panera, the employee drops a frozen plastic bag into a pot of boiling water for a couple of minutes, and pours it into a bowl. Here, have a spoon.
What’s funny (aside from the not-so-funny fact that the worker was fired from her job) is that Panera is defending how it prepares fast food. And you know what? I get it. It’s fast food. It has to be consistent across all locations, and it must be served fast, not six months later when the winter wheat is harvested.
The fact of the matter is, all restaurants do this, unless you are dining on haute cuisine at an over-priced, trendy five-star diner with a chef to match. It’s how they can serve you today, not tomorrow or next year. These places rely on formulas for everything, and frozen foods prepared at a central location are part of the equation. That’s how you guarantee consistency as well as speed.
Panera was busted doing what everyone else does, and to be honest, I bet deep down inside we all kind of know this, even though we probably do not want to know too much about what goes on inside the kitchen. As long as the food is good, we are OK with the charade.
But Panera learned an important lesson here, and that is every employer is vulnerable when it comes to employees revealing trade secrets and processes. The fact that it swiftly canned the aspiring video producer is justified, and were it not also true that fast food workers are typically not blessed on the asset side of the balance sheet, they probably could have sought damages.
All of which means that major chains have to spend time monitoring social media not only for customer complaints, but also watching its own workers. That’s an expense no one anticipated, but then again, in the era of the citizen journalist armed with smartphone and wifi, I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.
The Wizard has been exposed, but lunch goes on.

I haven’t had a more or less fully lucid dream in a while, so I’m gonna share the weird crap my subconscious mind sometimes does;
Most of the dream was a slice-of-life with a group of people and kids I don't know or recall knowing, just dream-world-only acquaintances. Just doing simple stuff like bowling.
At one point, I tried to get a ball of mine re-drilled and sent it to the shop, only to have it returned to me covered in nonsensical, intersecting holes, with melted grip rubber uselessly oozing out of a few. This was odd because I'd given them the measurements needed (taken from another ball of mine), and they insisted this was a 'necessary first step' and that it was my job to tell them which holes were the ones to keep. None of them made sense, though. My brother showed up and agreed to get it sorted out, and took the ball while I used my old one.
After bowling, we headed out in a spatially contorted minivan of the 'larger inside than out' variety, though not by much (like, imagine maybe fitting half a school bus inside a minivan, but with van seating). One of the girls next to me was playing with little AR apps on her phone, but for some reason I could see all the little things she was adding to her phone-camera screen in reality. We made a little game of it, until something happened.
Suddenly, a group of children and one adult stormed out of a building in utter terror, screaming for someone to save them or for people to run, as if a monster was behind them. We slowed down a bit and opened the doors to let them in, but they ran on past us along the sidewalk as if we weren't there, and didn't even notice when we yelled for them to get in.
As they rounded the corner, I looked back up to see what was behind them and it was... a very tall, fairly heavyset and generically dapper man. Decorative white suit and top hat, regal white mustache, gold monocle and trim on a lot of his clothes, gold cane with a generic diamond decoration.
The others in my van saw him and were immediately terrified and SLAMMED the acceleration to escape, PEELING out onto the highway and almost knocking me out the door as I was still leaning out. To their horror, as they were speeding on, he pulled up alongside us with a condescending smile, keeping up despite seeming to be casually strolling along.
The smile remained as faux-kind as ever as he threatened, in a jovial tone, "If you value your life, and the lives of everyone with you, you'll hit me with everything you've got~."
At this point I was lucid. "Don't mind if I do."
I held out my arm, palm forward first, but then I pointed, and hit him with an ear-shattering precision orbital strike, a multifaceted, prismatic bolt from the heavens that literally chipped and fragmented the reality of the dream itself around its edges.
I hit him with five of them.
When the fractures and light died down... he was completely unscathed, and still smiling.
"Wow, that was actually quite good! I'm surprised!" He finished with the words, "We'll be in touch~" before he blinked out of existence, and when HE blinked out of existence, the rest of us were immediately teleported out of the van...
...and into some kind of weird warehouse complex littered with severed animal parts and swarming with strange floating 'children' that were more just strings of random gore hanging from heads (so not organized in a meaningful way like the penanggalan mini I've been working on). Most of them tried to hide from us, so we didn’t even know the nature of their bodies until one was curious enough to emerge from behind some boxes.
They weren't aggressive, but none of them would answer any questions until the one adult among them said they didn't trust us, because we were responsible for all the animal parts that were lying around; apparently they had appeared when we did.
We tried to explain that it wasn't us, and I described what happened, including the man. Hearing the description of the man terrified all the weird organ-ghoul folks, but before they or the party I was with could tell me who he was, I woke up.

Bridgestone Golf Unveils Exciting Evolution of Its Industry-Leading Ball Fitting Program
Testing off the tee now complemented by approach shot data and greenside considerations
Bridgestone Golf, the #1 Ball-Fitter in Golf, is announcing exciting changes to its groundbreaking Ball Fitting program that will help golfers determine which golf ball is best suited for their game for tee shots, approach shots and greenside performance.
To date, Bridgestone’s Ball Fitting program has relied on a method of head-to-head driver testing - with a player’s current golf ball selection being pitted against a selection from the Bridgestone line that was derived from a series of driver swing measurements on its Science Eye launch monitors. In 2019, in addition to the trusted driver performance analysis, Bridgestone will begin measuring approach shot performance using an 8-iron as its testing control.  Bridgestone will look at spin rates, launch angle, ball speed and other key measurements to help determine changes in accuracy, consistency and distance on approach shots from ball-to-ball.  Once a player is fit into a category of ball based on the driver and approach shot testing, Bridgestone will provide that player with 2-ball sample sleeves to conduct their own greenside testing before making a final determination as to which ball they make their “gamer.”
“In 2006, we launched a program that changed the conversation golfers were having from which players were playing which balls on Tour, to which ball should I play that best fits my game,” said Adam Rehberg, Golf Ball Fitting Manager, Bridgestone Golf, Inc.  “As we have continued our efforts to educate consumers through many different methods about the best way to choose a golf ball fit for them, technology has advanced and consumers have become more sophisticated about what questions to ask.  So, in 2019, we are adding approach shot analysis and short-game considerations to our in-person fittings.  We will be able to confidently fit golfers the same way they play the game, from tee to green.”
Bridgestone’s Ball Fitting program, which launched in 2006 as “The Bridgestone Challenge,” is credited with being the first consumer-focused system to use science-based launch monitor data to educate golfers on how different golf balls affect their games - encouraging them to choose golf balls based on data metrics rather than the emotional appeal of what Tour players are playing.  What Bridgestone found was astonishing.  An incredible 7 out of 10 players tested benefitted from being fit for a golf ball, gaining distance and/or accuracy off the tee.  Through 2018, Bridgestone has conducted over 300,000 in person fittings and over 2.1 million golfers in total have been aided in their golf ball selection with tools like B-FIT Chat, On-Line Golf Ball Selector and the B-FIT Swing App that allows golfers to conveniently measure their swing characteristics using their smart phone’s camera.  In addition to being used as a diagnostic tool, Bridgestone has also relied on Ball Fitting in product R&D with several balls being developed as a result of information gleaned through the program.
In 2019, Bridgestone will return to a greater emphasis on its in-person fittings, relaunching teams of ball-fitting professionals to conduct one-on-one fittings at golf courses, retailers and other special events throughout the golf season.
“Greenside testing is challenging because feel is so subjective when it comes to player preferences on chips and pitches, so what better way for a player to ensure they have a ball that fits their game on and around the greens than doing some testing of their own with complimentary balls,” said Rehberg.  “We are confident that with the evolution of our Ball Fitting methodology golfers will have a clearer picture than ever before about how a golf ball’s construction impacts every facet of their game.”
Bridgestone’s new Ball Fitting program will kick-off in Atlanta during the Super Bowl Experience at the Georgia World Congress Center and Super Bowl LIVE in Centennial Park. This spring Bridgestone’s evolved Ball Fitting will make its way to select Sunbelt markets, expanding its reach nationwide this summer and fall.  For more information about Bridgestone’s enhanced Ball Fitting program visit www.BridgestoneGolf.com.

Can’t cook? Well, to combat your kitchen woes, Cooking Pal has recently announced the Multo Intelligent Cooking System to help the novice home cook level up. It aims to take some of the stress out of things like family dinners and meal-prepping. But how does it perform? In this product review, we’re going to help you decide whether Multo is for you.
youtube
What Is Multo?
The Multo Intelligent Cooking System is an all-in-one cooking appliance that Cooking Pal touts as “the only cooking appliance you will ever need.” It comes in two main parts, an intelligent hub specially designed to stand up to being in the kitchen, and the main cooking unit, which looks like a food processor on steroids.
These types of all-in-one cooking devices are supposedly great for those who aren’t confident in the kitchen. All-in-one devices aren’t new, and many might remember the old Ronco “set-it-and-forget-it” ads from 90’s late-night TV. Multo, on the other hand, is a smart appliance with built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a specialized wireless Android tablet interface.
Tumblr media
Currently, Multo is available for special pre-order at $799, but Cooking Pal expects to release the device commercially in July. At that time, though, expect the price to increase. So if you’re interested, you might want to head over to Cooking Pal’s website and sign up for a pre-order discount.
Tumblr media
Cooking Pal states that this device can cook, weigh, chop, sauté, knead, steam, boil, whisk, mix, emulsify, grate, and grind. Essentially, it’s an appliance that will take some of the hassles out of cooking. It does this by providing a unique guided cooking function. According to Cooking Pal’s website, this device has also gotten praise from Elle Magazine, Working Mother Magazine, and The Guardian.
In the interface, Multo has step-by-step recipes, and the device will guide you as you cook. This guidance includes weighing ingredients, adding things at the proper times, and keeping track of when your dish is complete. It’s really an exciting concept.
Ideally, if you’re a novice home cook, something like Multo should allow you to spend less time in the kitchen, and the guided recipe function claims to help you make great dishes as long as you can follow instructions.

Who Is Multo For?
If you’re not confident in the kitchen, then something like this will improve your culinary prowess. Multo isn’t going to turn you into a four-star Michelin chef, but if you can’t cook, then the device can keep you from spending hundreds on take-out.
For more experienced home chefs, Multo also offers some unique benefits like easy cleanup. According to Cooking Pal, everything except the main unit and the hub is dishwasher safe. The device also has two self-cleaning modes built in to make cleanup even more manageable. Just add water and a little dish soap to the mixing bowl, select the preset cleaning mode, and the machine gets to work.
What’s in the Box?
Tumblr media
The list of items and accessories included with this unit is pretty long. When you buy Multo, you’ll get:
The main unit
The blade and blade seal
The 3.1 qt stainless steel mixing bowl
5 oz measuring cup
The lid and lid seal
A butterfly whisk
A simmering basket
A steamer lid
Both shallow and deep steaming trays
A steamer seal
The hub
The hub stand
A specialty spatula
The owner’s manual & warranty information
A USB type-C to type-A charging cable for the hub
The power cable
It may seem like a lot of stuff, but the idea here is that the Multo will replace many of your current kitchen appliances.
Technical Specifications
These technical specifications came directly from the owner’s manual of the unit, but keep in mind, Multo is currently in pre-release status, so some specs could change.
Main Unit
Rated Voltage: 120V, 60Hz

Testing the Multo Intelligent Cooking System
Tumblr media
To test this unit, I tried two recipes from the included recipes in the app. The first was the bacon-wrapped chicken recipe, and the second was a more simple dish, the pasta alfredo. The primary reason for choosing these two dishes is they represent both ends of the difficulty spectrum for novice cooks. Making pasta alfredo isn’t exactly difficult without Multo, and the dish seemed pretty fool-proof.
As for the bacon-wrapped chicken, this dish represented the full meal capabilities of Multo. The dish included steamed carrots, bacon-wrapped chicken breast fillets, and stick-to-your-ribs mashed potatoes.
Pasta Alfredo
The pasta alfredo dish started out promising with fresh-grated parmesan cheese and chopped parsley, though it was a little annoying to have to thoroughly clean the mixing bowl out after blitzing both of these ingredients. Despite this, I tried to stay positive. Then things started getting a bit strange.
I added 17.5 oz of water to the mixing bowl (but no salt!!) and waited until it reached a temperature of 194F (per the instructions) before adding half a package of dry spaghetti to the bowl. I accomplished this feat by feeding the spaghetti through the small hole in the lid of Multo. This action resulted in abject hilarity when, rather than falling into the bowl, the spaghetti just rotated in place like it was on some strange carnival ride. After a few moments of watching this nonsense, I paused the machine and then pressed the dry noodles down until they were entirely inside of the mixing bowl.
Now, I could have used Fettuccini here, as that is the traditional way to make pasta alfredo, and I could have also chosen to make pasta from scratch. But, because Cooking Pal designed Multo with novices in mind, homemade noodles might not be an option. Once the noodles were finished, I drained the spaghetti and let it hang out in its half al-dente state until the remainder of the sauce was complete.
Next, I added garlic to the bowl, and Multo chopped it. The machine then asked me to add butter, which I did, but rather than sautéing the garlic in the butter, Multo sort of steeped the garlic as it warmed the butter. There was no sizzle from the bowl to indicate sauteing, and by the end of this process, there were chunks of raw garlic in a warm butter mixture. It was at this point that I started to lose some of my confidence in the machine.
Tumblr media
Then, the machine instructed me to add heavy cream, parmesan, and milk into the bowl, along with salt and pepper. I did this and watched as Multo half-heartedly stirred this sauce together. Finally, it was time to add my pasta back into the bowl with the sauce. I did so and let the machine do its thing for another five minutes.
When these minutes were up, I opened the lid to find a soupy, lukewarm mess of noodles, raw garlic, and heavy cream. It was terrible. The raw garlic imparted a strange sweetness to the dish, and though it looked okay, it didn’t taste very good. There was also quite a bit of liquid at the bottom of the mixing bowl.
Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Breast
My next culinary adventure with Multo was started by peeling some potatoes and carrots. Multo didn’t help with this task as much as a vegetable peeler and one of my kitchen knives did. After completing this step, I added water to the mixing bowl and suspended my quartered potatoes in the included steamer basket.
I then cut my carrots into bite-sized chunks and placed them in the small steamer attachment until the tablet reported I was at the proper weight. Then, I washed and dried my chicken fillets (per the instructions) and added salt and pepper before wrapping the fillets in thick hickory-smoked bacon. These I placed in the lower steaming bowl and then covered with the upper steaming bowl full of carrots.
I added salt and sugar to the carrots and placed the steaming lid on the unit. Multo set a time for 20 minutes, and I pressed the start button. The whole process here did not take long. I timed it, and it took about fifteen minutes to get everything together, not including peeling my potatoes or chopping my carrots—which I did before I started.
When the timer went off, I removed the chicken and the carrots from the mixing bowl. Then it was time to make mashed potatoes. Once the timer finished, I plated the carrots and the chicken and prepared to taste everything. First, I loaded up a forkful of carrot and stuffed it in my mouth. But after 20 minutes in the steamer basket, these carrots were still mostly raw.
Next, I cut into one of the breast filets. However, the inside of the chicken seemed okay, so I sliced off a small piece and put it in my mouth only to immediately spit it out when the rubbery texture and cool temperature told me that the meat was undercooked. At that point, I concluded my testing, tossed $30 of undercooked ingredients in the bin, and ordered a pizza.

What Do We Love About Multo?
Tumblr media
In theory, this device has a lot of potential. Other devices like it—the Thermomix TM6, for example—have a lot of fans. And technically, it does what it is supposed to do: cook, weigh, chop, sauté, knead, steam, boil, whisk, mix, emulsify, grate, and grind. All of those things can be used in manual mode with Multo to make cooking much easier theoretically. But based on my testing, it doesn’t do many of those things well except for chopping.
If the included recipes were better, then the device might make a great alternative to some of the more expensive devices like it on the market. Unfortunately, it’s not there yet, and until the recipes are updated to produce meals that won’t come out soupy or undercooked, then I think this device is still a bit half-baked.
There is one good thing, and that’s the self-cleaning mode. It is nice not to have to scrub a mixing bowl when cooking is complete. However, the number of accessories almost fills my dishwasher if I use them all for a single meal.
What’s Not to Love About Multo?
Tumblr media
Again, the purpose of this device is to help cook full dishes. In other words, you’re not going to use the device as a single step in the cooking process. Cooking Pal made Multo to serve as an all-in-one appliance for beginners or people who want to save time.
But from my experience, it doesn’t do that. At least not with the included recipes. Unfortunately, these recipes are a big draw, and there’s a pretty steep learning curve if you’re going to try and create your own.
Then there’s the size of the unit. It’s bigger than many food processors and stand mixers, and the accessories take up a lot of space. It’s a lot for a countertop. If you have a smaller kitchen, you’ll want to consider the size of Multo before purchase.
There’s also the issue of mobile app development, Amazon Alexa support, and the ability to use the rear hub camera for impromptu recipe recommendations. These are three items that Cooking Pal is still working on despite being featured on the company’s website. I was invited to try a demo version of the app, but I didn’t see much point if it was still in development as so much might change.

Can You Repair the Multo Intelligent Cooking System?
Tumblr media
This question is an interesting one. For breakdowns, you’re better off contacting Cooking Pal. The internal components of this device aren’t designed to be taken apart. However, there is an answer in the FAQ on Cooking Pal’s website that indicates spare parts are available. The warranty on the product is one year, so if there is an issue, you can get in touch with Cooking Pal, and they can help you get things sorted out.
Should You Buy Multo by Cooking Pal?
Not yet. Based on my experience, Multo’s key feature is the guided cooking aspect, but that part of the device isn’t quite dialed in. Perhaps once some improvements are made maybe I can revisit the device. As for first impressions, however, we're not confident that Multo is ready to deliver on its promise of making cooking easy.
However, if you aren’t comfortable in your kitchen, I can see how this device could increase your confidence. But if you’re a seasoned home chef, then you’ll probably get more mileage out of a quality set of pots, pans, and knives.
On the other hand, despite the single-year warranty, I will say that the build quality of Multo seems to be top tier. I’d certainly be curious to see how it holds up after eight or nine months of constant use. It seems pretty sturdy as kitchen appliances go.
Overall, we really wanted to like Multo. At its core, the machine has a whole mess of potential. Unfortunately, based on our testing, Multo needs a little more time in the oven before Cooking Pal releases it into the world—especially at $799 or more.

Make sure you wrap each of your fragile items separately, so they’re fully cushioned. If you don’t have packing paper, opt for bubble wrap or a quilted blanket. Don’t stack your dishes horizontally inside a box. Instead, wrap your plates and bowls in packing paper, gently place them into a box on their sides like records, and then fill the empty spaces with bubble wrap to prevent cracking and breaking.

Student scientists want to help all of us survive a warmer world
This has been a year full of the unexpected. COVID-19 has forced people indoors, closed schools and killed more than 220,000 Americans. Besides the pandemic, there have been hurricanes, wildfires, protests and more. Behind some of these upheavals, though, is an unfolding event that shows no sign of stopping: climate change.
Climate change is contributing to many of the disasters that have been changing lives around the world. Here we meet students who have been using science to help people better understand and deal with the effects of our changing climate.
Their research helped place them among 30 finalists at the 10th Broadcom MASTERS. MASTERS stands for Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars. It’s a research program open to middle-school investigators. Society for Science & the Public (which publishes Science News for Students) created the event. Broadcom Foundation, headquartered in Irvine, Calif., sponsors it.
Some of the kids developed systems to help keep people safe as climate change makes life more unpredictable. Others developed ways to save precious resources, such as water and oil. And one student applied lessons from a study done in a cereal bowl to model melting glaciers.
Fighting fire and flood with science
Like many Californians, Ryan Honary, 12, has personal experience with wildfires. A student at Pegasus School in Huntington, he was with his father at an Arizona tennis tournament when he saw wildfires raging across his home state on TV. “The hills that were burning looked just like the hills behind my house,” Ryan recalls. “I called my mom and asked if she was okay.” Once he knew that she was, he asked his dad why wildfires got out of control so often. “We’re planning to send people to Mars but we can’t detect wildfires,” Ryan says.
That’s when Ryan decided to create a way to detect wildfires early — before they get out of control. He linked together a series of Raspberry Pi computers. Some of these tiny units were fitted to detect smoke, fire and humidity (how much water is in the air). Their sensors relayed data wirelessly to another Raspberry Pi. This slightly bigger computer served as a mini meteorological station. He estimates that each sensor would cost around $20, and the mini stations would cost $60 each.
Tumblr media
Ryan Honary shows off his wildfire detectorH. Honary
Ryan brought his entire system to a park and tested it by holding the flame from a lighter in front of each sensor. When these sensed a fire, they informed the detector. It then alerted an app that Ryan built for his phone. While creating that app, Ryan talked with Mohammed Kachuee. He’s a graduate student at the University of California, Los Angeles. Kachuee helped Ryan use machine learning to train his app with data from the large 2018 Camp Fire. The app took lessons from how this fire had traveled over time. Using those data, the app “learned” to predict how flames at future events might spread.
Someday, Ryan hopes his sensors might be deployed throughout his state. “Five of the worst fires in California just happened in the last three months,” he notes. “So it’s pretty obvious that global warming and climate change is just making the fire problems worse.”
Stronger hurricanes are another symptom of a warming climate. Heavy rain and storms can produce sudden floods that appear and disappear locally within minutes. One such flash flood provided a memorable experience for Ishan Ahluwalia, 14.
Tumblr media
Ishan Ashluwalia had a tire roll on a wet treadmill to create a warning system for when a car might slip. A. Ahluwalia
It was a rainy day in Portland, Ore. “My family was driving on a highway,” recalls the now ninth grader at Jesuit High School in the city. “We were driving at the speed limit.” But a sudden sheet of water on the road made the car swerve. It was hydroplaning. This occurs when water builds up beneath a tire, he explains. With no friction, the tire slips “and the car slips as well.” This can lead to accidents.
Ishan was surprised that there was no system in a car to sense when tires were about to slide. So he went to his garage and put a small tire on a treadmill. He hooked the wheel up to a computer with an accelerometer inside. As the treadmill moved and the wheel rolled, he ran water down the belt to make synthetic rain. The computer then measured the friction between the wheel and the belt as differing amounts of rain fell.
Then, like Ryan, Ishan used machine learning. “In middle school, my science teachers really helped me get the project off the ground,” he says. But the next step was to talk to an engineer who works at nearby Oregon Health and Science University. With that engineer’s guidance, Ishan trained the system he built to associate different types of weather with how much water was on the road. It could then link those water levels with a car’s ability to maneuver.
If installed in a car, Ishan says, this system might offer a notice in green, yellow or red to warn people when they faced a risk of losing control of steering or braking. It also could help people drive more safely as heavy rains and flooding become more common.
Saving water and stopping snails
Just as it’s possible to have way too much rain, it’s also possible to have far too little. Pauline Estrada’s home, in Fresno, Calif., is in one such drought-prone region. The eighth grader at Granite Ridge Intermediate School saw nearby farmers watering their fields. In dry regions like hers, no drop would be wasted. So she sought a way to help growers predict when their plants truly needed water. Right now, Pauline says, farmers measure soil moisture to see if their plants are thirsty. But, she notes, that doesn’t show if the plant itself is suffering.
Tumblr media
Pauline Estrada made this rover seen in a farm field. Her so-called Infra-Rover scans plants to determine if they need water. P. Estrada
Luckily, this 13-year-old had a rover lying around. She had built the robot vehicle from a kit. The teen also built an infrared camera. It makes images at light wavelengths the human eye can’t see. Infrared light often is used to map heat. A hotter plant is a drier plant, Pauline explains. When a plant has enough water, she says, “it lets water go through its leaves.” This cools the air on the surface of the leaf. But if the plant is dry, it will hold in water, and the leaf surface will be hotter.
Pauline attached the camera to her rover and drove it around pepper plants that she grew in pots. Sure enough, her roving camera could spot when these plants needed water. Then, with the help of Dave Goorahoo, a plant scientist at Fresno State University, she ran her rover around pepper plants in a farm field.
Her Infra-Rover currently scans only one plant at a time. Pauline hopes to scale up her system to observe many at once. She also plans to work on a system to predict when hot plants will need water — before they get parched. “It’s important to not waste water during climate change,” she says. Water them when they need it, she says, not before.
Explainer: CO2 and other greenhouse gases
Once those crops are grown, they’ll need to be shipped to hungry people the world over. Many will travel on huge cargo ships powered by large amounts of fossil fuels. In fact, cargo ships account for three percent of all carbon dioxide emitted into the air each year.
Those ships would burn less fuel if they encountered less friction at sea, known as drag, reasoned Charlotte Michaluk. The 14-year-old is now a ninth grader at Hopewell Valley Central High School in Pennington, N.J. A scuba diver since sixth grade, Charlotte knew that one source of drag was stuff growing on the hulls of ships. Barnacles, snails and other organisms contribute to this biofouling. Their lumpy bodies increase drag, making ships work harder and burn more fuel.
Tumblr media
Charlotte runs water down a ramp to determine how much drag it creates. She hopes that better materials will help ships use fewer climate-warming fuels to sail the seas. C. Michaluk
Charlotte opted to design a new, more slippery coating for a ship’s hull so that fewer creatures would be able to hitch a ride. She tested different materials in the aquatic version of a wind tunnel. Charlotte loves woodworking and crafting. “My family knows where I’ve been in the house based on my trail of crafting materials,” she says. She designed a ramp that she could coat with different materials. Then she measured the force of the water flowing off different metal and plastic coatings to calculate their drag.
One material proved really good at reducing drag. Called PDMS, it’s a type of silicone — a material made of chains of silicon and oxygen atoms. Charlotte also tested some surfaces that had been based on mako shark skins. The sharklike drag-limiting scales, known as denticles, worked well at cutting the ramp’s drag.
But would they also prevent other creatures from latching on? To find out, Charlotte went hunting for small bladder snails in local streams. She put the snails in her water tunnel and observed how well they were able to cling to different surfaces. PDMS and the fake mako skin prevented snails from sticking.
“Biofouling is a really big problem,” she says. Affected ships will consume more fossil fuels. And that, she explains, “contributes to global warming.” She hopes her discoveries might someday help ships slip more easily through the water — and save fuel.
Eyes on ice
It might seem like a kid from Hawaii wouldn’t spend a lot of time thinking about glaciers. But Rylan Colbert, 13, sure does. It started when this eighth grader at Waiakea Intermediate School in Hilo first saw news of an experiment on how dams might collapse. Those tests had studied how piles of rice cereal collapsed in milk.
The cereal was puffed rice. But Rylan was soon thinking about ice. “I think I had shaved ice [a popular treat in Hawaii] the day before and I was thinking about it,” he says. “And that led me to thinking about glaciers” and how their collapse might affect polar regions.
Rylan decided to study if shaved ice would collapse into water as the rice cereal had in the study he had read about. For a little guidance, he emailed Itai Einav. He’s a coauthor of the rice cereal study at the University of Sydney in Australia. Einav emailed back and became “kind of my mentor,” Rylan says.
Tumblr media
Rylan Colbert next to his tiny shaved ice “glacier.” To model a cold environment, he kept his science project in the refrigerator. S. Colbert
Using a refrigerator in his father’s lab at the University of Hawaii, Ryan filled beakers with a layer of gravel. Then he added a layer of shaved ice to serve as his model glacier. “The density of the shaved ice was about the density of freshly fallen show,” he says. That’s really important, he says; it simulates how glaciers develop. “That’s the start of the process.”
He set a microscope on its side in the fridge to monitor exactly what happened. “To simulate global warming, I pumped water under the shaved ice and it compacted,” Rylan notes. He tested water pumped in at -1° Celsius (30° Fahrenheit) and then again at 8 °C (46 °F). That warmer water simulated a warming ocean.
Ice with warmer water below it compacted seven percent faster than ice atop very cold water, Rylan showed. He hopes his research might help people understand how glaciers form (or don’t), as the world warms.
Doing more scientific research around climate change is key, he believes. Eventually, he says, “it’ll hit home with somebody and they’ll say, ‘Hey, let’s stop this.’”
Pauline hopes that more research also will prompt more action. “We should take all measures to prevent [climate change] as much as possible,” she says. “At the rate it’s going, it’s going to destroy the planet.”

Top Notch XiaoMi Roborock S50 S55 in Starhill Gallery
At 63.8 decibels, the Roborock S5 was clearly louder than the Shark Ion R85 (59.2). We had the ability to have a conversation as the vacuum worked around us but definitely raised our voices. Much like the app that communicates the Mi Home app, the Eufy Robovac 30C is designed to control house smart devices. While the app's vacuum section is robust, the layout isn't instinctive. We were impressed with how gently the Roborock S5 approached walls and obstacles. The bumper on the Roomba 690 seemed to announce it struck something with elastic clunk; the S5 was more polite.
Tumblr media
The robot slows its own approach and its brush before gingerly approaching an obstruction ; however, once the S5 decided an item was still approachable, it approached with gusto. The S5 pushed on chairs and dog bowl across the floor more than the Shark Ion R85 and the Neato Botvac D7. It wasn't destructive, but I would not leave a fragile vase onto a lightweight plant stand around through a cleaning. The Roborock S5 may also be controlled via Amazon Alexa and Google Home. Don't expect to access some complex features the choices are On and Off, which prompts to bot to return to its base. Google Assistant adds"Return to Dock," which sends the robot home, as opposed to Cease, which divides the vacuum in its tracks. All in all, the Roborock S5 gathered an average of 86.8% of test debris on carpet--a performance on a par with the Neato Botvac D7, but well below the Shark Ion R85's 97.2 percent. The S5's hardwood performance told a similar story, picking up an average of 83.9 percent of test debris. The Botvac D7 bested it by 12 percent. If you guessed the Go icon would begin a cleaning cycle, you would be wrong. Rather, Go directs the S5 to a user-chosen stage on the cleaning map for the bot to perform a spot cleaning. Activating the Clean icon initiates an overall vacuuming cycle. Buried in the Preferences menu are five distinct Cleanup modes: Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, MAX and Mop. The app, and by extension, the vacuum, retain the mode last used. Flip the Roborock S5 above and you're going to discover two black rubber wheels on both sides, a multi-directional wheel at front, and a side brush to the left. Between the wheels are the mix rubber and bristle roller brush. Though similar to the brush on the Eufy Robovac 30c, the S5's roller brush stayed free of hair and fuzz. Installation and app The main screen shows the area in yards, cleaning time and our item of information.
Tumblr media
Along the base are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup. Exactly what the Roborock S5 lacked cleaning thoroughness, it made up for with speed, cleaning our hardwood and carpet test area at an average of 15 minutes and 22 seconds, nearly a complete hour faster than the Roomba 690 and 45 minutes quickly than the Shark Ion R85. It was not quite as quickly as the Neato Botvac D7, that cleaned the evaluation area at an average of 10 minutes, 22 minutes. The manual recommends running a vacuum cycle . We did so, but it did not seem to help. The S5 left the mapped area dull and somewhat tacky. When it had been possible to use something along with water in the mop tank it would have performed better. Layout  According to a Roborock representative, though the Roborock S5 uses the same app produced by Xiaomi as the S55 (Xiaomi is an investor in Roborock), map data is saved locally on the robot and just goes into the Cloud when a user views the map on the smartphone program. Up to 20 maps are stored in the Cloud in any time and are automatically deleted after a year. When users delete a map in the program, it's also removed from the Cloud. The security firm AV-Test recently evaluated the safety of four different app-connected robot vacuums, such as the Roborock S55 and the Roomba 980. The Roborock S55 performed the worst; AV-Test explained this was"Due partly to gross security deficiencies in data transmission, the transfer of information to third parties, the program's unexplainable thirst for information, as well as a very clear need for progress in the announcement on the handling of consumer data." Notice that tabbed Saving Mode is now in beta and have to be toggled on separately under Vacuum Settings from the program. We spent several test runs re-mapping our floor due to this map not saving automatically. Both the more expensive iRobot Roomba i7+ and the Botvac D7 are able to store multiple floor plans. Despite its size, the Roborock S5 deftly maneuvered through tight spaces. At 3.8 inches high, the S5 sits squarely between the 3.9-inch Botvac D7 and the 3.7-inch Roomba 690.
Tumblr media
While we don't adore the laser cover in the center, the characteristic was less obtrusive than the one on the D7, which has a large overhang and penchant for getting stuck under room chairs. The Roborock S5 performed nicely, but not outstandingly so. On hardwood and carpeting, it picked up an average of 96.2 percent of those Cheerios strewn throughout the test region, which was slightly less than the iRobot Roomba 690 (99.5 percent), the Neato Botvac D7 (99.8) and the Shark Ion R85, which scooped a perfect 100 percent with this evaluation. At this robot's middle is a laser cap using a dab of orange beneath, very similar to the one on the Neato Botvac D7. Over the cover are bodily buttons for spot cleaning, on/off and recharging. Perhaps due to the white color, the wall detectors on the front and side of the S5 are more noticeable than on other models, but they do not detract in the bot appearance. The Roborock S5 is primarily controlled via the Mi Home app (Android and iOS). Connecting the robot into the app and also to our home wi-fi network took two tries, mostly because the directions for pairing the bot into the network weren't too clear. Abstruse instructions quickly turned into a motif of this S5. "Starting the cleanup," a cheery voice announces from deep inside the Roborock S5. Rather than a series of Morse code-like beeps and chimes employed by the Neato Botvac D7, the Shark Ion R85 and many other appliances, the S5 announces what it's going to do in easy-to-understand terminology prompts. Cleaning performance Security concerns You want it to look if it's docked on your living space, if you're adding a robot vacuum cleaner to your home. The Roborock S5 eschews the black-and-grey color scheme embraced by other vacuums for white, with muted silver trim around the rim. The Roborock S5 measures 13.8 inches in diameter, more than an inch bigger than the Shark Ion R85; it's also bigger than the 13-inch iRobot Roomba 690 and the 13.2-inch Neato Botvac D7. When the Roborock S5 gets its claws, it cleaned regions in a thorough, precise, back-and-forth snake layout. The robot vacuum immediately found its way under our dining room table through the maze weaving its way to the other out of one side of the space. We appreciated how tightly the S5 hewed to walls and chair legs;it tackled walls and borders as the Neato Botvac D7. The vac was also smart enough to fully avert a thick pile rug that felled additional robot vacuums, but its taller elevation supposed it did not fit under our seats or our low-clearance sofa. One of our favorite design elements of the Robovac S5 is its own"hood" Flip the plastic piece up and you will find the ample dustbin hidden in the center, together with a Wi-Fi index light and program reset button. The S5 was the only robot vacuum cleaner we reviewed that had an onboard space to maintain the differently easy-to-lose tool for cleaning the brush roll, a means to maintain functionality while enhancing the aesthetic. An section close to the back is supposed to hold the microfiber mop module. The black-and-white dock for the Roborock S5 is only marginally taller than the vacuum . A large, clear plastic mat attaches to the pier, but it is only needed if you're planning on using the mop attachment.
Tumblr media
Mopping performance We were reluctant to give the S5 free reign to wash if it decided to try and clean our carpet, therefore we used the spot-cleaning mode, which cleans a 1.5- meter (4.9 ft ) area around where the S5 is put. Turns our hesitations were unfounded. The Roborock S5 produced about as much water on the ground as a wet Swiffer pad. If it had cleaned as well as a Swiffer does. Picking pet hair on both the hardwood and carpet stymied many of the robot vacuums we tested, including the Roborock S5;it picked up only 79.5% of pet hair--10 percent less than the Botvac D7 and 8.5 percent less than the Ion R85. However, the S5 did finest the Roomba 690's 73.3 percent pet hair pickup rate. We're enthused about zone cleaning on the Roborock S5, as it's a wonderful way to perform a cleaning of a front hall or kitchen where there is more foot traffic. You are able to draw boxes around the map areas you want vacuumed. Contrary to the Roomba i7+ and the Neato Botvac D7, you can't save or title the zones, which means you have to redraw every time to the place that you want to clean them. Adding to the confusion is a Edit Map button on the display that allows you draw on virtual barrier cassette and no-go zones. The Roborock S5 distinguishes itself with a mapping feature that's unique one of the robot vacuums we analyzed, but unfortunately, its own cleaning art is useful. A thin disk with a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides under the back of the vacuum. Fill out the dish with water, click it adjust the Cleanup manner in the program and you are ready to clean.

A half-inch slender, half-moon-shaped disk with a microfiber pad attached with velcro clicks resides beneath the back of the vacuum. Fill the dish using water, click it in, adjust the Cleanup mode in the program and you're ready to clean. The screen displays the most recent place in yards, cleaning time and also our piece of information. Along the bottom are icons for Go, Dock, Clean and Zoned Cleanup.
