Lil Fella (Boundless;Domain)
A party member and secret final boss of Boundless;Domain's nightmare route. In this route Koros is seduced and captured by Deviant Marrah of the Tzga Order and almost converted into a doll, but is saved by a chaos witch named Alcotto alongside a strange creature called "lil fella". Alcotto is a member of the "Lower Order" a group of chaos witches and deviants opposed to the activities of the "higher order", also known as the Tzga Order, the word "Tzga" being a world in the primordial seraphic tongue meaning "transform" with a feminine expression. The lower order seeks to take down and overthrow the Tzga Order, but to actually "erase" the Tzga Order (aka kill them for good without them coming back" Alcotto needed to make a pact with the fallen angel Lil Fella, who has the power to ban people from the entire lower domain if they contain express enough lust in their hearts. So she did just that, and in exchange for power Alcotto must never draw a child again, which she is fine with.
After Koros is rescued Alcotto introduces Koros to the rest of the lower domain with her on this mission including the "shadow witch" and Paper Mario ultra-fan Vivia, the former witch hunter, "Hexgunner", and Alcotto's loving husband No Name, the cookie-loving and chaotic "portal master" Gex, the Russian, money hungry "Bunmancer" Sakalas, and the "goddess" of Zutara, Barbello herself. Koros with the rest of the team defeats the entirety of the Tzga Order, all 13 members including ones Koros recognized from his previous adventure in Chronicles Meteorfall.
Each time you face a deviant in this route, they ask you a philosophical question which you can respond to positively or negatively. If you respond to the questions more times negative than positive you will be on the standard route, but if you respond positively more times than negatively you will have an additional ultra-hard fight against Lil Fella, who deems your heart too corrupted by the Tzga Order's influence and wants to erase Koros as well. If you are able to beat Lil Fella you get an alternate ending where Alcotto and No Name sacrifice themselves to defeat Lil Fella and Koros becomes the new ruler of the Tzga Order.
Lil Fella is a parody of the mascot of DeviantArt, also named Lil Fella and is the embodiment of that site. He hates children with a burning passion and loves calling everyone he doesn't like a pedophile because of his own insecurities. He's pretty unlikable as a result, but his powers of erasure are needed in the fight against the Tzga Order so the rest of the team just tolerates him.

The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails
Though Japanese developer Nihon Falcom was long known by RPG fans for their work on Ys, Sorcerian and many popular RPGs, the Trails in the Sky series (known in Japanese as Sora no Kiseki) propelled them to great levels of popularity when they were released on the PSP. Refocusing their efforts from the PC to Sony’s portable platform, they began expanding the series even further, effectively creating their own Final Fantasy-style franchise. In branching out, the developers created The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails, known as Nayuta no Kiseki in Japan, an action RPG that’s vastly different title from the other games in the series, even though it shares its namesake. It was originally released for the PSP in Japan only in 2012, but later received a worldwide English release for other platforms in 2023.

One last thought that I started to put in the tags but want to put here instead is that as someone coming to CRPGs from TTRPGs both played and actual play (and to the former from fantasy novels more than anything else), it is really fascinating because I know a lot of people, at least of the millennial or younger generation, had the opposite experience (ie, played RPG video games before coming to D&D and such). And I wonder if that influences my approach because in the end, CRPGs arguably give you as an individual the most control over the world. While the choices are not as infinite and boundless as they are in a TTRPG, you don't have to contend with the real feelings of other people; you are by definition either the main character or the person who ultimately decides what happens. Meanwhile, if you come from fantasy novels, any individual influence on the narrative is new and exciting. I don't think this locks people into one approach, but I have observed that I tend to be a little more open to like, seeing what plays out and allowing canon ships a chance to win me over even if they weren't what I was inclined to ship than many people, or a little more patient with meandering or strange decisions.
#truly no idea how to tag this. it's meta on meta.#but actually i don't have any client stuff until the afternoon so please discuss i want to see if i'm totally out of bounds here

Castles in the Air
I'm extremely excited to announce that the game I've been working on for the past 4 years is coming to Kickstarter! Castles in the Air (CitA) is a tabletop RPG inspired by the novels of Louisa May Alcott and L.M. Montgomery. Players start as children with boundless dreams who will change over the years based on the relationships they form and choices they make. I think it's a really special game, and I'm looking forward to being able to share it with everyone.
For more information or to sign up to be notified when the Kickstarter launches on May 14th, please check out the game's page on the Storybrewers Roleplaying website. If that name sounds familiar, Storybrewers is the company that created Good Society: A Jane Austen RPG. I feel very honored that they reached out to me about publishing Castles in the Air. While Castles in the Air is a standalone game, its mechanics are inspired by Good Society, and if you like Good Society, I think you'll like CitA too as it allows you to tell similarly compelling stories.
I will be creating some blog posts talking about the literary inspirations for different parts of the game in the weeks leading up to the Kickstarter and during its run. I will be using this as a master post to keep track of all of them, so make sure to check back here or follow my blog if you are interested.

Almighty TATTRPGFT, I ask you what is a good fantasy ttrpg thats like a smidgen simpler than/tighter than dnd thats flexible and has individual character progression thats cool? (I am so damn tired of dnd and after I finish my lancer campaign I'm gonna try to run a fantasy thing thats about world hopping since my brain cant stick with just one world... I wanted to run OSR stuff but most of my players want to keep their characters longer than a couple sessions)
THEME: World-hopping Fantasy Games
Hello there, so I’ve got some world-hopping games for you that I consider all much simpler than D&D, although the way they cater to your players’ wants may vary. Now I’m personally biased towards Forged-in-the-Dark games if your characters want to hold onto their characters and explore all of their mechanical and narrative details, but I’m also hoping that folks will see this ask and suggest more fantasy games that give you cool character abilities - maybe you can even mesh some regular fantasy games with something else on this list!
Portal Rats, by Tore Nielsen.
Portal Rats is a stand-alone fantasy tabletop rpg, based on the Black Hack rules.
There is an unlimited wealth of worlds out there. Some are embodiments of ideals, some the product of a god's fevered will, and some who seem to have congealed from pure potential. In Portal Rats you can visit all of them.
The core mechanic of Portal Rats is a roll-below test, using a d20 against an attribute on your character sheet. You have six attributes that should remind your players of D&D, although the backgrounds of your characters are less about your race and more about what you did in the past. The rules of the game look to be pretty concise, with much of the 58-page book being different character options and character classes. You level up when you finish a mission or quest, which results in more hit points, and higher attributes.
This game is probably close to what you as a GM are looking for: it’s an OSR mindset, with very little that allows the players to hold onto their characters if a roll goes badly. That being said, if your players are attached to their characters, they might be able to bring out emotional and narrative elements regardless of the system. Therefore, even if you pick up something that is more similar to OSR, they’ll find ways to role-play.
Vergence, by Small Cool Games.
Within the multiverse are a few places of great power called Vergences. They are ruled by families bred for the ability to open portals between worlds.
You play a member of one of these empowered bloodlines. Your birthright gives you the capacity to travel across infinite dimensions and manipulate reality.
But you’ll need to deal with conflicts involving your own powerful and manipulative family, secret conspiracies, mystical enemies, moldering gods, terrifying monsters, ancient artifacts, and existential threats with the potential to affect all the worlds of the Umbra. And possibly your annoying little sister…
Vergence is a Forged-in-the-Dark game that really amps up your character’s powers and broadens the stakes to a cosmic scale. Vergence is a much looser interpretation of Blades, taking away much of the bookkeeping found in the vice and heat mechanics that punish typical Blades’ characters. You also level up as a group, rather than individually, which I understand might not be what your playgroup is looking for, but your characters are still uniquely powered individuals with special abilities.
1400 Planes, by Unknown Dungeon.
1400 Planes is lo-fi hi-fantasy.
The multiverse roils with boundless existence. For many, the infinite planes of creation drift past at an immeasurable distance, their alien secrets perpetually out of reach. However those who break their mortal shackles and cross that liminal space, wander such exotic spheres on an eternal pilgrimage.
1400 Planes is a stand-alone table-top RPG. The rules are short and easy to learn and the whole game can fit on a single sheet of paper. It can be played using just the rules provided, or combined with other entries in the 1400 series to expand the world and provide more character and game options.
24XX games feel very slim and small, but I think they can provide the base for something bigger that caters to your group. They can also be combined with other games that use the same rule-set very easily, which you could use to provide interesting level-ups for characters. 24XX games are also usually pretty cheap, so you’re not going to break the bank picking up a few to play around with.
Planedawn Orphans, by Sharkbomb Studios.
Set in the Planar City, a strange melting pot that connects the vast diversity of the multiverse. You all play Planar Orphans stranded in this city, your original home worlds destroyed, corrupted or lost.
A mysterious Patron has brought you together, provided you with a base of operations and tasked you to complete a Planar Key. This key will let you create a new plane for you and your fellow refugees. Your quest will bring you to exotic places filled with strange creatures and bizarre phenomena.
This isn’t a game in itself - it’s a campaign framework - but it gives you the opportunity to cobble together a bunch of different games while still giving your players a structure upon which they can scaffold their character’s growth and personalities. I’m currently running this across a huge number of different games with a co-GM and my home group: so far we’ve played Household, The Wildsea, Sundered Isles, and The Great Soul Train Robbery!
Sig, City of Blades, by Genesis of Legend Publishing.
Sig is the nexus of the multiverse, where eternal planes and infinite primes meet. It’s a rough home for cutters and bashers, hungry for coin and glory. It’s a city of gods, demons, and stranger things which lurk. It’s a place where opposites meet, trading knives and kisses in equal measure.
The Silent Regent once ruled over the city with a bladed fist. Now her throne sits empty and the criminal factions battle for control. They dispatch crews of Freebooters, clever and bold, to further their schemes. This is where you come in.
In Sig: City of Blades, you will play the Freebooters in service to once of the mighty city factions. Your faction depends on you to perform vital missions to seize territory and coin from their rivals. This is a game about clever spies, renegade sorcerers and reckless smugglers. You are the best of the best and the worst of the worst.
If you are familiar with Planescape, I’ve heard that Sig: City of Blades gives off the same vibes, at least when it comes to setting. Rules-wise, it’s Forged in the Dark. It looks like in this game, the multiverse comes to you; as scoundrels in a city at the centre of these dimensions, there are plenty of ways for you to get rich in some kind of way that counts. If your group is up to play scoundrels and thieves, you might be interested in Sig: City of Blades.
Tiny Dungeon: Second Edition, by Gallant Knight Games.
Tiny Dungeon: Second Edition is powered by the TinyD6 engine, with streamlined mechanics that utilize only one to three single six-sided dice on every action, characters that can be written on a 3x5 notecard, and easy to understand and teach rules, Tiny Dungeon 2e is great for all groups, ages, and experience levels!
Tiny Dungeon feels like a very boiled-down version of a classic fantasy game; heritages that give you starting abilities, traits that are reminiscent of character classes, and a turn economy that structures combat to make sure everyone gets the same amount of time to do things. You use d6’s to roll, with 1d6 being the worst pool (rolling with a disadvantage) and 3d6 being the best (rolling with an ability or advantage). The game is meant to be mod-able, with optional rules and various micro-settings meant to get your inspiration flowing. The best part about so many different micro-settings that all use the same rules is that you can absolutely jump from one setting to another!
Fantasy Recommendations from The Past
Fantasy, With Tools
Echoes of D&D
Non-Western Fantasy
Non-Gritty Low Fantasy
Fuck Wizards of the Coast
I’d also ask myself if Slugblaster could be hacked to be about fantasy adventurers jumping into various dimensions, rather than teenagers hoverboarding across space and time. It certainly has plenty of pieces that allow your characters to dig into personal issues - the Trouble mechanic really lets you digest the kinds of things your character might have to neglect in order to go adventuring! You can read more about it in my Dimensional Travel recommendation post.

⚠️Spoilers: This blog post contains spoilers for the "Solo Leveling" series. If you haven't caught up with the series, please proceed with caution.
The Ascension of Sung Jinwoo: From the World's Weakest to the Unrivaled Monarch
In the enthralling universe of "Solo Leveling," Sung Jinwoo stands as a testament to the limitless potential that lies within the seemingly ordinary. Once dubbed the weakest hunter, Jinwoo's journey is a riveting tale of growth, power, and the indomitable human spirit. Here, we delve into the myriad of skills, powers, talents, and abilities that mark Jinwoo's evolution into the Shadow Monarch.
The System: A Hunter's Best Ally
Jinwoo's rise begins with the mysterious "System," which grants him the unique ability to level up—a privilege unheard of in the hunter community. This system acts as a personal RPG interface, allowing Jinwoo to gain experience, improve his stats, and learn new skills through combat and completing quests⁴.
A Necromancer's Might: Shadow Extraction and Command
As Jinwoo's prowess grows, he unlocks the necromantic ability of **Shadow Extraction**. This power enables him to raise the shadows of the fallen, creating an ever-growing, loyal army that fights at his command. Each shadow retains the strength and skills of its former life, making Jinwoo's army a formidable force on any battlefield⁴.
The Shadow Monarch: A Legacy of Power
Inheriting the mantle of the Shadow Monarch, Jinwoo gains control over the realm of death itself. His powers reach god-like levels, allowing him to summon and command legions of shadows, including powerful lieutenants like Igris and Tank. This vast army can be used for combat, healing, and even transportation, making Jinwoo a master tactician⁶.
Beyond Physical Limits: Strength, Speed, and Stealth
Jinwoo's physical abilities are nothing short of superhuman. His **strength** and **speed** are unparalleled, allowing him to dispatch enemies with ease. Additionally, his **Stealth** ability renders him invisible to both physical and magical detection, making him an unstoppable force in both assassination and escape⁴.
The Monarch's Domain: A Realm of Shadows
One of Jinwoo's most awe-inspiring abilities is the **Monarch's Domain**. This skill transforms the battlefield into a realm of shadows, enhancing the power of his shadow army and overwhelming his adversaries with the sheer force of his dominion⁶.
Kandiaru's Blessing and Armor Creation: The Shields of the Monarch
For defense, Jinwoo has **Kandiaru's Blessing** for vitality and **Armor Creation** for protection. These abilities not only shield him from harm but also ensure his continued reign as the Shadow Monarch⁶.
The Sprint and the Dagger: The Tools of the Assassin
Jinwoo's arsenal includes skills like **Sprint**, which boosts his already impressive speed, and **Dagger Toss**, a ranged attack that strikes with deadly precision. These abilities, combined with his stealth, make him a lethal assassin⁵.
The Shadow Monarch's Legacy
Sung Jinwoo's tale is one of metamorphosis, from the weakest of hunters to the sovereign of shadows. His abilities, both innate and acquired, paint the picture of a character who defies the odds and rewrites the rules of power. As the Shadow Monarch, Jinwoo stands as a beacon of strength, strategy, and the unyielding will to ascend.
Jinwoo's journey is a captivating saga that resonates with the timeless allure of growth and the pursuit of greatness. His skills, powers, talents, and abilities are a testament to the transformative power of perseverance and the boundless potential that awaits those who dare to level up.

Who's your favourite member from each of the massive OC casts you've created (Audacious Regulars, Star Cross Warriors and Funomena)?
Star Cross Warriors: Definitely Parfait, Florabelle and Sugarcoat. I literally cannot choose between them. I love Parfait’s boundless energy and larger than life personality, whilst hiding her perfectionism and desire to make friends with everyone and wants them to be happy, cos she’s scared of being alone. Which is accentuated by her late father's abuse and having no prominent mother figure in her life, meaning she tries her best to be independent and Florabelle’s great cos I love drawing her and I like how soft-spoken and calm she is, but shes not a doormat, she's just as strong-willed as her girlfriend and once she gains a new teacher in the form of an elderly Ironite warrior named Irogun, she trains to become a swordsbunny, not to prove that she can be just as strong as her girlfriend, she just thinks its neat. And I just think that's a great motivation to have. Also Sugarcoat is just fun for me to write and draw cos I love drawing unhinged characters, especially ones with monstrous egos like him.
Audacious Regulars: Delilah, always wanted to make an ultra femme business lady who's good with numbers but also loves cheesy romance stories, contrasting the realistic and sardonic Audrey, who's terrible at forming deep relationships with anyone, let alone romance. I also like the idea of Delilah having such strong mathetical skills and business smarts that she was originally offered a job as a bank manager in the big city, but she decided to go for accounting instead, but she knows big city jobs are factories for stress and prefers a job at her pace. Also I want her to be Audrey's first gay option if AR ever becomes a game cos I love childhood friend romances. I really like Audrey herself to be a perfect twist on the typical otome game protagonist. Usually these women in these types of games are delicate wallflowers who shriek at the sight of lewd jokes, but Audrey's just a normal ass woman who's got a brain and is written like a grown woman, not a puppet written by extremely creepy men who view women as pets.
I really like Cale, cos he's written to be my ideal man. Kind, sweet, unwaveringly loyal and honest, but is very cringe. He's kinda like if Sheldon and Mozu fused into one guy, he's very snarky and aloof at first and rarely lets anyone in but he's a sweetheart once you get close to him. Also I stan a man who loves cute critters as much as I do.
Funomena is still a new concept, cos i mainly made this cos I wanted to do a fantasy story with human characters and I wanted to stick it to Genshin for being a racist, bigoted mess by writing my own story, but ive literally only gotten the characters and the basic set up for the story down so I dont have much to talk about. In terms of concept and design, I like: Pixine, for a good commentary on how teenage girls in anime are preyed on by weebs and the homogenous nature of anime girls being blank slates being marketably designed to appeal to weebs. Also its just nice to see a teenager in an anime RPG just be a normal kid and have a found family that love her dearly. Also Violance for being another good deconstruction of anime waifu culture and how needlessly dark and tortured a lot of women's backstories is and the only symptom they suffer from this trauma is just stress and workaholicism. Like, thats so boring...
I also like Holly and Janice, although they were recycled from an old story and placed here, I still love Holly's down to earth nature contrasting the lunacy she has to deal with. I like how she goes from wishing she could be in an JRPG cos she loves them so much, to now actually BEING TELEPORTED INTO ONE, she ends up very jaded to it cos of the very toxic world Funomena actually is and just wants all of its residents to be free from this. Janice is also my first trans character so I had to include her here and I want her to be happy and safe surrounded by her best friend Holly and her new RPG group of friends she's made. I love the idea that she was initially skittish about meeting the residents of Funomena out of fear of being ridiculed or any transphobic slander, but it turns out the residents of Funomena, especially the Princess, really like her and marvel at how beautiful she is. Which is something every trans woman deserves to hear, to be honest.
Sorry for late reply, had to really sit down and think about this ask. Thanks, I always love talking about my OCs.

2023 Game of the Year Countdown #8 The Legend of Nayuta: Boundless Trails Nintendo Switch, 2023 (PlayStation Portable, 2012)
Originally a Japan-only game from Falcom, NISA ported it when they also brought over the Crossbell games from the Trails series. While it does have the word “trails” in the title, this game is not canonically connected to the massive Trails universe, despite a few coy remarks from the CEO and president of Falcom.
That said, there are a few cool little crossovers that are fun for Trails fans to enjoy. Nayuta’s last name is the same as one of the main characters from the Cold Steel series, and the two also share an interest in astronomy. Creha, the silver haired girl from the Nayuta’s art, resembles the mysterious Grandmaster of Ouroboros of the Trails universe. It’s fun for fans and I liked it.
This is a fairly straightforward action RPG: you enter a level and whack everything that moves. There’s a decent amount of platforming as well, and the fact that it was originally a PSP game means that the controls are simple and easy to understand.
The music is perhaps a little bit underwhelming as far as Falcom releases go, but I did enjoy Remnant Island’s main theme, and the rest of the OST is decent background music.
As far as characters go, I love Noi. Maybe I’m a sucker for little helpful fairy characters (Razzly from Chrono Cross is an all time favorite of mine), but Noi has really cute little animations and voice lines that are really endearing. Plus, I love magic attacks and Noi is the one that actually fires all of them while Nayuta swings the sword.
I only found myself lost one or two times while traversing the levels, which is one of the issues I have with action RPGs. Sometimes, games make things too complex or hidden and that harms my enjoyment. Puzzles were sometimes long, but rarely difficult. I found the attack combos easy to figure out as well. It’s just a simple game to pick up and play in every aspect.
I’ve been waiting for this game for a few years, always expecting NISA to officially localize it at some point. If you see it on sale and like a more laid back RPG experience that still has some action combat, this could be a good one for you.
