Will Ji & Dan figure out the beta for the V8 cave boulder | Bouldering | Indoor Climbing
Indoor climbing, also known as indoor rock climbing or indoor bouldering, is a popular sport and recreational activity that involves scaling artificial climbing walls in a controlled indoor environment. It has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its accessibility, safety features, and the physical and mental challenges it offers

AITA For no longer wanting to continue a mutual hobby, started with a friend?
Hello! Long time lurker first time asker. Sorry if the title is a bit confusing!
Long story short I (27 ftm) recently started rock climbing as a hobby and a fun to exercise. For context I'm a heavier person, so I wanted to do a physical hobby that I could do at my own pace. I started with a 101 top-rope course and invited a long time friend of mine to attend with me (they suggest taking the class in pairs). After that I took a bouldering 101 course by myself (my aforementioned friend said they weren't interested, totally understandable).
I've since started to take climbing more seriously and ramped up to going 2-3 times a week (I live a 10 min walk away from the climbing gym). Also going earlier in the day to avoid the peak hours as i'm immunocompromised so the less people the better. This month will be my 4th month doing so.
We originally started climbing together however after a few weeks of meeting up once a week, they kept bailing with little to no notice (or telling me 11:30 pm the night before). Also when we'd met up the last time she brought her boyfriend along. Even though I said i'd prefer to meet him for the first time in a more relaxed environment (not me dripping with sweat and out of breath). He's a nice enough guy but I just don't want to spend time with him in this specific setting lol.
I have a very erratic work schedule vs my friend who a has pretty stable work schedule. So I find I often have to take initiative to message them (the week before) asking what days work for them. That way I can reference what days I have off. They often ignore the message for a few days or answer the morning of.
They've called out every week for the two months+. Either saying they're too tired, don't feel like it, forgot their gym clothes and or have other plans. I'm totally fine with this! Life happens and sometimes you don't have the energy for these activities. However what cheeses me off is I feel like I always have to comfort them, so they don't feel bad they bailed again and they give me little to no notice.
About 2-3 weeks ago I asked them about dates to hang out (I also specified we didn't have to climbing, even just to go hang out for coffee or something lol) and they haven’t responded, but I see them posting online with their other group of friends. Again I’m not mad about them not wanting to go, or hanging out with their other friend-group but I’d appreciate some sort response.
The thing is I also have ANOTHER friend who is interested in coming with me to try it out. Both of these friends of mine don't get along anymore. At one point all three of us where pretty close mutual friends. Nothing crazy dramatic happened but they had a falling out and they no longer interact with each other at all.
I however am still friends with both of them. They also both know I am still friends with the other friend (if that makes sense).
For possible added context I have ASD, so this sometimes causes issues when reading peoples intentions or possible passive aggression. I also get very anxious when my planned schedule/routine gets thrown off and often can derail my entire day.
So to sum it up, AITA for wanting to climb by myself, or other people besides the friend originally started the hobby with? Even if these two people aren't really friends anymore? Am I being just too hard on them? Am I just not picking up on something? Thanks!
What are these acronyms?

Azata, Aeolaeka
Tumblr media
Image © Paizo Publishing, accessed at Archives of Nethys here
[Sponsored by @razzelmire, from Pathfinder 2e. I’m glad someone at Paizo is of the same mind as me as far as “rock cycle = naturally chaotic process”. I have a protean of plate tectonics in the works. Because the original flavor text stressed how they make deals with mortals, I wanted to make sure they were at the HD cap for planar ally and planar binding spells.]
Azata, Aeolaeka CR 12 CG Outsider (extraplanar) This beautiful humanoid is seemingly carved from stone and twice the height of a typical human. They have satyr-like features, with curling horns and hoofed legs.
Aeolaekas are sometimes called stone azatas, as they embody the chaos of rock and earth. Any substance that can become dust or diamonds is seen by the azatas as embodying chaotic potential. They are, however, more patient than most other azatas, as such transformations tend to require geological timescales to occur. They are often contacted by mortal summoners for their steady heads and willingness to make lasting pacts. Some of the angelic statues found in city squares or public buildings might even by an aeolaeka waiting patiently for the time when its contract needs to be fulfilled and it must fight to protect the innocent.
An aeolaeka is an implacable foe, batting aside lesser enemies in order to concentrate on the one it considers most dangerous (often the one dealing the most collateral damage). If facing a mass of enemies, they can crush them with an avalanche of magical boulders, but wouldn’t dare use this ability if innocents might be caught in the crossfire. They might make hit and run attacks if in a cave or on solid ground, using earth glide to take enemies unaware, but only if their charges are suitably protected without their direct physical presence. All aeolaekas are willing to fight to the death against the forces of evil if they must.
When not attending to mortal affairs, aeolaekas are often found admiring geological processes. As they are immortal and patient, one might remain in a cave for millennia to watch how stalactites and stalagmites grow and crumble, whereas another might live atop a mountain to monitor its erosion versus uplift. They often take the long term view, which makes them slightly at odds with typical azatas, but they get along well with creatures of elemental earth, even lawful ones such as shaitans. They often fight against evil elemental creatures, particularly salamanders and efreets.
A typical aeolaeka is twelve feet tall.

If the creature fails a DC 19 Fortitude save, it falls safely up to 120 feet, and cannot fly or levitate for 12 rounds if it touches the ground. If it succeeds its save, it falls 60 feet, but its ability to fly is unaffected. The save DC is Charisma based. Liberate the Earth (Su) As a standard action, an aeolaeka can create a 60 foot line of rolling boulders. All creatures in the area take 10d6 bludgeoning damage and fall prone; a successful DC 19 Reflex save halves the damage and negates the prone condition. This damage counts as magic and good for the purposes of overcoming damage reduction. The area affected becomes difficult terrain for 24 hours, after which the stones crumble into dust. An aeolaeka must wait 1d4 rounds between uses of this ability. The save DC is Charisma based. Sacred Hammer (Su) Any bludgeoning weapon wielded by an aeolaeka gains the holy weapon quality for as long as the aeolaeka wields it. Thrown weapons or projectiles lose this quality 1 round after being launched.

YOU ROCK CLIMB TOO?? Pls pls pls I gotta know your highest grade and what kinda climbing you like best!! (Like top rope vs bouldering vs lead climbing, etc) :D
ahhhh I haven't gone in months but the gym i used to go to had extremely tough grading (military town) so I could only do up to a 5.9 maybe. i've been to other gyms though where i can do 5.10's first try so it's been kind of like that meme of the toddler training weights coming off lmaooo
i exclusively do top roping, i know too many people who've hurt themselves bouldering from not falling correctly, even experienced climbers, and i'm concerned more about getting my stamina and heart strength up than very carefully plotting technique. i may want to try lead climbing someday but i don't think i'm at that level yet!! if i get back into it i may take videos and share :)

I MEAN ID LOVE TO ASK FOR SOME BUCKTOMMY HEADCANONS 🥺
okay okay okay -- finally home after a long ass day so here ya go before I head to bed:
Tommy and Buck do not cuddle at night which yes I know -- blasphemy! but like hear me out... they both just radiate heat (they're human furnaces) at night and if they cuddle they ARE waking up feeling gross as shit because they've sweated buckets. their blankets are damp, their sheets are damp, their skin is covered in droplets of their own sweat and just - it's gross okay? so they don't cuddle. but like... maybe they'll fall asleep with Tommy's head resting on Buck's waist/ribs or brushing against his hand - something to say "hey I'm here" but also "it's toooooo hot to cuddle"
I'm not a ride or die for this headcanon but adhd Buck & autistic Tommy let's fucking go. (I will also accept/embrace audhd Buck but that man 100% has adhd.)
also I can see them adopting a cat together. Tommy is a cat person (though I have been tempted towards "Tommy is a dog person" because @kinaaaard made a SOLID sell) and Buck loves all animals (but is decidedly a dog person). however they pick out a cat because a cat just makes sense with their work schedule, and I can very much 100% see Buck being the reason they leave the shelter with a 12 year old black cat because, "Tommy she has been here for two years. She should not be spending her elderly years in a shelter." So they leave with Po (Buck names her before they even make it to the car) who has cataracts, has a nub for a tail, and just doesn't look In The Best Shape.
okay yes muay thai this muay thai that but hear me out again... Buck & Tommy finding an athletic activity to do together that neither have done before and might I propose... rock climbing. maybe they eventually get to outdoor rock climbing but let us focus on indoor only because that's what I'm most familiar with (I'm a rock climber). to me, rock climbing just seems like it'd be such a Buck sport and I can see Buck thoroughly enjoying lead climbing. there's top rope and bouldering but I think where they both really "thrive" is when they get to lead climbing because, if you're not familiar, lead climbing is where you're not really tied in and what I mean by this is that you wear a harness, a rope is tied to your harness, but instead of the rope going up the wall and looping through a big metal thingy attached to the ceiling, the rope is on the floor and as you climb you are clipping the rope through carabiners (each about 4ft apart) which means if you fall in after one carabiner but before the other then you fall past/to the carabiner you last clipped into. (I do not lead climb yet that shit is fucking terrifying. I hate heights.) anyway... a big thing in lead climbing, too, is that when you get to the top of the wall instead of climbing into the last carabiner, you take a "victory whip" which literally just means... purposefully taking a big fall then climbing to the top again and climbing in and that just feels like something Buck would ABSOLUTELY fucking love to do.
okay your ask about high school Tommy got me thinking a little and I hope you'll forgive me that this is 100% a Tommy-exclusive HC vs a Bucktommy HC... anyway yes yes yes LOVED your kind of angsty idea but hear me out: Tommy's father being a... traditional man who pushed Tommy to do traditional male sports (football, wrestling, maybe baseball) and I don't think Tommy was a football player (mostly b/c I hate football and think it's dangerous and we should not be letting our youth play this sport what the fuck) but I could see him as a wrestler. I can also see, to an extent, Tommy's father trying to relive his "glory days" via Tommy (maybe Tommy becomes a wrestler because his dad was a wrestler and that's what his dad pushed him to do). anyway I just can see young Tommy trying (and probably failing) to do what his dad wants of him to try to gain some crumb of approval.

Author’s Marginalia - 3
I am not a solo dev.
I have vast admiration for those that do singlehandedly manage art, writing, coding, and promotion-- it’s quite a load, and those that shoulder it alone are deserving of all praise. Of the other devs I know, whether solo or part of a team, it seems like many of us begin, bright-eyed, with a story we wish to tell and share, and then find ourselves with an ongoing list of fetch quests necessary to fulfill first. Coding is a new language to learn; script edits can take years; artwork is iterated on and iterated on again; few of us who write also have a talent for social media communications.
Among all those, daunting as they are, it seems among the greatest hurdle often proves backgrounds.
Tumblr media
(photo taken in Santa Ysabel, California, of an oak snag in grassland against the backdrop of a rolling green hill; granite crops up out of the grass and chapparal in places)
It’s a deceptively simple problem to solve: ostensibly, as long as the necessary set pieces are in place-- tidy rows of desks, perhaps, or an unmade bed, or a castle in the distance-- what more do you really need? Too much detail can distract from the characters or the narrative; after all, this remains a written medium, even if it also relies heavily on imagery. It’s a nature-vs-nurture debate: must we tell, when we can show? Is showing necessary, where telling already occurs? There is no global “right” or “wrong” answer, of course-- only the personal.
I remember once struggling to ascend to the top of a granite boulder, my late uncle lifting me beneath the armpits and helping to hoist me up to a vantage I never before had experienced in my then single-digit lifespan. In a world where everyone and everything seemed Big, the massive granite outcroppings and monumental oaks were simply to scale: grown-ups, cars, movies, feelings, all loomed large and unfathomable. Why wouldn’t trees and rocks require one to tip back one’s head and squint against the afternoon sunshine? Most of it might be well beyond my compass, but within a few short years, I excelled at scrambling up those rocks, and climbing those trees, and worrying my parents, their heads tipped back in turn, squinting into the afternoon sun and telling me to get down again this instant.
On the cusp of adulthood, a massive wildfire laid waste to the older-growth oak trees just outside the city where I grew up; when I returned to my hometown, the landscape I knew from childhood had contracted, not merely in response to my growing larger, but in honest truth. The moments we see an old family friend and think, Ah, they are smaller than I remember-- but now it was not the familiar oaks dotting the hillsides and valleys, but their legacy. The boulders remain, of course; the young oaks have filled in much of what was lost; the survivors of the blaze tower above their surroundings, and when I see them, I think to myself of the memories I share with those trees, in spite of all else that has changed, in my life and theirs.
I do not know another way to inhabit the world, except to believe our surroundings are more than incidental in our stories; they are full characters, and while they may be wordless, nevertheless they influence each and every scene-- and when they are gone or changed, their absence speaks of grief as eloquently in its way as the loss of a loved one.
Because of this, I too find backgrounds-- a great deal of work.
Tumblr media
(initial sketch made of the previous image, strongly lined over the snag and horizon lines, but vague where the oak canopy starts)
I adore-- passionately!-- my home state of California. I love the gnarled oaks and the golden grasslands; I love the granite-studded mountains and the unknowable redwood forests; I love the rugged coast and the slubby blanket-fort foothills. I love the small things: the fae circles of mushrooms that crop up; the spires of purple lupine in spring; the fragile poppies the color of flame, which burn out almost as swiftly as they emerge. The Matalija poppies, which in full bloom look like sunny-side-up eggs in a Studio Ghibli film. Manzanita, growing out of rocks and cliff faces, bark like garnet, leaves like jade, flowers like elfin bells. Sage, richly perfuming the air, irresistibly tactile. The phoenix-like ability of native plants to die by fire and yet emerge again anew.
I live in a fairytale landscape, and I do not forget it. I cannot; it gifts me stories to tell myself, and now others. The trouble is not that the place I draw from for Bright Oak is limited, but instead, that it feels in many ways limitless. What is most important? What shall best serve the story? I have hundreds-- if not well over a thousand-- reference photos I have taken over the years at this point, all along the coastal foothills and mountains forming the westernmost ridge of the state. Each background I come to, I shuffle through the deck again, searching out the right trees, the right swell of hills, the right row of buildings, sometimes mixing and rearranging and reformatting until the “face” I see in my head I can find on the screen.
Because as intimately as I know my characters, I also know the landscape they inhabit; their voices are in my mouth, but the oaks and rolling hills are just beneath my skin. And in as much as I crave to share those characters with others, that they might know and (hopefully) love them, I feel similarly regarding Bright Oak itself. It’s the amalgam of memories I carry: the roar of wind, the rasp of summer grass, the hush of leaves underfoot, cricketsong in the evening. The relief of occupying a place where one is not required to speak all the time, but can simply listen. I want to layer it all in, and I aspire to the backgrounds serving as a living part of the narrative, hyper-saturated with all the awe and familiarity-yet-strangeness and sentimentality I can imbue them with. It may be the Technicolor version of the places I hold dearest-- but I suppose in a way that’s to be expected.
After all, it’s California.
Tumblr media
(the finished hand-painted watercolor version of the background, re-lined in ink: a patchwork of gold, ochre, and myriad greens, with pops of terracotta red; the sky is robin’s-egg blue with merengue peaks of clouds)

Today was a good day. Went rock climbing! Well, bouldering. To be completely honest I was expecting to mostly... not? I am. Scared of heights. I'd have been happy to just sit & cheer people on.
Instead @salt-and-bramble showed us how to start and I just- did it? I finished a whole bunch of v-intros, and at least one other (v-0 or 1? Kinda wish I'd been paying any attention at all to which ones I attempted vs finished). But also, I tried a bunch that were too difficult and *fell off* and didn't die. At one point I even suddenly noticed I was up high and froze and fell off and still did not die. It was very very good and I wasn't afraid at all (i guess technically the moment I froze & fell off the wall was fear but that was like, one second). I think the honestly stunningly cheerful time was mostly because I had excellent companions being chill and offering each other tips and having fun and being generally very confident and safe. I was also expecting grip strength to be the confounding strength-related weakness but actually it was definitely arms. Need to get stronk 💪. This was very motivating towards restarting my 'do a pull-up' exercises.
Finished the day with a vegan milkshake (good, not great), without any straw for the gävle goat (note to self, next year get this in September/October), and with a lot of quality conversation.

Off-Screen Event: Fall of the Titan
(Music Box: Vs. Regi Trio from Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire)
“Oh come on! This again!” Mare shouted. “How did it even get above us!”
Regirock slammed its fist down towards the group, who all dodged out of the way.
“The Titans know this tree better than any Pokemon but Mew.” Sir Aaron explained. “They can get anywhere they want.”
Mare kicked Regirock, causing it to stumble backwards towards Sir Aaron. Thankfully, he was a ghost so Regirock just went through him.
“Its strange, though.” Aaron said, rubbing his chin. “Usually they don’t enter the Altar Room. Something must be very wrong.” “Yeah no shit!” Mare shouted.
Regirock attempted to bring its arm down onto Kyoshi but Mare threw herself in the way just in time, grabbing Regirock’s arm with both hands. The Rock Peak Pokemon continued to try to push downwards on Mare with one arm and lifted the other one to fire a barrage of rocks at Kazoku, which hit straight on.
“A little help!” Mare called.
“On it!” Kyoshi shouted, launching an Aura Sphere at Regirock’s arm.
The arm crumbled away, freeing Mare. She tossed the boulder that was its hand(?) to the side. Unfortunately, much like in the canyon, Regirock was able to reform its arm with ease.
“That’s it, Regirock is definitely my least favorite Legendary!” Mare shouted. “Let’s end this!”
She held up her forearm and tapped her Keystone with her pointer and middle fingers. And nothing happened. Because Kyoshi had just given her Lucarionite to Mosa.
“Son of a bitch.” Mare swore. She reached for Kaen’s Pokeball and then looked around the room. There was barely enough room for all of them plus the Regirock as it was. Kaen would just make the close quarters situation worse.
“Riley! You and Mosa need to Mega Evolve!” Mare called.
“What? But Sir Aaron said it was dangerous!” Riley shouted.
“It is!” Mare agreed. “But its that or we die! Normally I wouldn’t push somebody to do this but we have no choice!”
“I agree.” Mosa said. “I know the risks but we’re out of options.” Riley took a deep breath. “Alright.” He held up his forearm much like he’d witnessed Mare do and tapped his keystone with his pointer and middle fingers. As his and Mosa’s stones began to glow he thrust his arm into the air. Mosa was encased in a sphere of solid energy emblazoned with the Mega Evolution symbol. Then it shattered, sending out a wave of energy and revealing Mega Lucario.
It was different from when Kyoshi and Kazoku did it, though. When they did it they had complete control. Mosa, however, was full of barely contained rage. He was breathing heavily.
“Mosa?” Riley asked, worried.
Mosa looked back. There was rage in his eyes. But behind that rage, a flash of recognition. He turned around and dashed straight towards the Regirock, punching through it. Quickly, Regirock reformed but Mosa turned around and slammed straight through it again. And again and again and again.
Finally, Mosa finished off by leaping into the air and bringing a kick down onto Regirock’s head… knocking it straight through the floor and all the way to the ground below.
“We have to get down there!” Riley shouted.
“No problem.” Zinnia said, releasing Myrtle the Altaria and mounting her. “Climb on.”
Mare, Riley, Kyoshi, and Kazoku (who had just finished excavating himself from the rubble) did so.
“Godspeed, you four.” Sir Aaron said, tipping his hat to them. “And good luck.”
----
They arrived on the ground to the sight of Mosa violently punching what appeared to be the remains of Regirock. Noticeably, it was not reforming. Riley ran towards Mosa.
“Mosa!” He shouted. “Please stop! Its done! You defeated it!”
Mosa turned around. His breathing was heavy and ragged. He looked ready to attack anyone and anything in sight. But then he collapsed to his knees, exhausted. The Mega Evolution wore off, returning him to being a regular Lucario.
Riley ran over to Mosa and helped him up. “Mosa, are you okay?”
“No, I am not.” Mosa said. “That was… terrifying. But also… amazing. I have never felt that level of power before. I never want to do it again but at the same time I want to do it again.”
“Is this normal for Mega Evolution?” Riley asked.
Kyoshi nodded. “Yes. But with proper training one can learn to control it.”
“I want… to undergo this training.” Mosa said.
“Are you sure?” Riley asked.
“Maybe we should save this for later.” Kazoku said. “We are still no closer to finding Mew.” “You’re right.” Riley said. He took out Mosa’s Pokeball and returned him to it. “Get a good rest, okay.”
Meanwhile, Zinnia was searching through the remains of Regirock. She wasn’t particularly worried about the Titan, legends said it would reform soon, so she figured she might as well poke around and see what she could learn. Most of it wasn’t that interesting but there was one thing that stood out to her. A glowing four-sided pyramid. Cautiously, she picked it up and looked it over.
“Hey, guys, come take a look at this.”
Everyone did so, Kazoku limping from being crushed by boulders. They all crowded around Zinnia.
“What is it?” Riley asked.
“Not sure.” Zinnia said.
Suddenly, recognition adorned Kazoku’s face. “I recognize that. It’s…”
But before he could finish a claw attached to a rope shot out of nowhere and snatched the pyramid out of Zinnia’s hands.
(Music Box: Team Galactic Appears! from Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl)
“Mine!” Said a woman with silver hair descending from the sky on a Jetpack. The claw had come from a gauntlet on her arm. “Thanks for defeating Regirock for me, by the way.”

Every time I read "Great Sky Island," it's said in the ghost ancestor's voice from Mulan in the same way he says, "Great Stone Dragon"
Screaming like a tea kettle over the subtle care between Link and Zelda
Researcher Zelda getting excited over her discovery is so adorable I love her so much
I love that bass sound in the cutscene right before the castle starts crumbling as it's being lifted skyward
First death was in combat. To be fair, it was 3 vs 1, and my shield turned to ash from the construct that had his stick on fire, and then the other one landed a hit. Head caved in by THICC Stick!
Minor detail, but I noticed in the dark cave when I swung my weapon. It also disturbed the fog around me!
The second death is by grabby hands! My borrowed wild horse spotted something, turned and ran as I was grabbing a new plant item. I climbed a boulder to get a better view of what I saw slithering just out of sight, and I see why they ran, but it saw me too! I was not quick enough on foot...
In one of the shrines, you have to bat a ball to the targets. I was creating the bat and went to test it out to see if it even swung and not get stuck on the floor due to the angle and without timing it, the ball was hit and landed the target immediately lol
Me runs over and stands on a rock. Said rock begins to rumble, "Ah of course....". It was a Talos
Riding across a bridge, I see something sparkling in the distance. It's the head of an electric Gleeok that's in the coliseum...
I veered off and ran through a bokoblin camp. Trying to ride through to the stables, I realized the cliff drops off into the river. So I leave my borrowed wild horse. Who then ends up running the same way I did lol
The korok trying to get to its friend near the Outskirt Stable was a pain! Having to go up the cliffside to get there. At one point the korok fell (misjudged the landing) and dropped all the way down. I went to fetch him, and the little guy kept rolling down the path in somersaults as Link was sprinting to catch him XD
Sneakily sniping a Bokoblin on watch duty. The others were asleep (beddy bye time). I took a photo for the compendium and then silent strike the remaining sleeping beauties. Turns out that helping Kilton build an exhibition of monsters leads to Hudson recreating a photo in whatever pose it was captured with. Which was it sleeping peacefully before being murdered
I was dragging a Korok to its friend via horse powered harness, and as we're riding through, he starts screaming, "Help! Heeeelp!". An enemy must've popped up, but I didn't see any, so it just looks like he was calling for him from ME 😈
I like the attack roomba and roadkill shrines
Shamelessly sending a korok down a cliff because it was the shortest and quickest way to get him to his friend 👀
Witnessed a hinox get a wakeup call via lightning. Then it saw me, but the lightning helped out by striking it again

Can Ji reach far enough for these System Board problems | Indoor climbing | Bouldering
Bouldering is like solving a physical puzzle. Climbers must figure out the best sequence of moves to navigate the route. This requires analyzing the holds, experimenting with different strategies, and adjusting their approach based on their own strengths and weaknesses.

I think my favorite moment of trail runner solidarity that sucked at the time was a couple years ago when I was coming up on hour 14 of a mountain ultra. It was rapidly heading for pitch dark. I was half dead, having bonked pretty hard six miles earlier, and frankly just moving forward was an accomplishment. And I hit a section of trail that was basically just a long, long rock scramble.
Similar sections of trail had been bad enough in daylight. Now I had to navigate it with my dinky little headlamp, unable to see any indicators of where the trail went except a few reflective markers.
As I was trying to summon up the energy to climb over a solid half mile of rocks without breaking my ankles, I saw a light and heard a voice. Another runner! We started on the boulder field together, and while we were creeping forward, we collected two other runners who also hit the boulder field and slowed to a crawl. The four of us decided to stick together - four pairs of eyes looking for the reflective markers and three people in shouting distance if anyone fell.
I could not tell you any of their names now, but for the next hour, we had an UNBREAKABLE BOND. "Try this way, I think it's easier." "Careful, that rock's loose." "Shit! You okay?" "Anybody see a marker?" "I think that's it over there!"
Even when we cleared the rocks, we almost carried each other the four miles to the finish. "How's your knee holding up?" "Do you need a second to sit?" "Here, I've got some extra water." "I'll look ahead, find the next turnoff and wait there so we don't lose each other." "A little over 2 miles to go, we've got this." We crossed the finish line, one at a time, and despite it being 10:30pm, we all waited for the last one to make it across so we could have a very smelly finish line group hug.
Anyway I love trail races because except for maybe a handful of people at the front, it's only nominally a competition. Really it's all of us idiots vs the mountain, anyone who finishes wins, and we all want to make sure everyone gets there.
Apparently there was some kind of race scheduled at a local park or something so I've been trying to avoid the main trail but a little while ago when I had to cross near it I overheard the following shouted exchange
Higher feminine voice: woo, look at you go! You're jogging! Keep it up!
Lower masculine voice (panting): you know it! Last place is still a place, baby!
And goddamn if that didn't rewire my brain a little bit.
Last place is still a place, baby.
