05- Solace in Lullabies
My submission for Zelinktines! (and a one shot iā€™ve been wanting to write for a while now lol)
I chose prompt 2: Singing!
I wanted to only do 500 word drabbleā€¦. but I went to 2,000 words. Iā€™m not mad about it.
@zelinktines
Thanks for hosting this! Itā€™s such a cute idea!!
Ship: Zelink BOTW
Angst and fluff balance!
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Moonlight lit the back of Link's tunic. The faint light cast his weak shadow across the stone. He stood at the edge of the spring with his gaze toward the arch entrance. The legendary sword resting in his grip, the tip of his blade grazing the ancient grounds. His cerulean eyes scanned for any ounce of danger that threatened to push past him.
Flurries of snow descended from above, landing in his dirty blonde locks and his sleeves. He couldnā€™t deny that it was peaceful up on Mount Lanayru, however, peace was far from the young heroā€™s mind. He could never ease his mind when Zelda was troubled, especially when they visited the springs.
Zelda was immersed waist-deep in the freezing cold water; her once recited prayers shifted into anguished pleas. The bitter heartache laced in her voice was more than enough for him to tell she was reaching her limit.
It tore his heart in every direction.
ā€œCurse you.ā€ His ears twitched slightly at the sound of water splashing and his heart stopped. She didnā€™t fall in did she? Right as he turned to check she spoke again, easing his initial panic. ā€Every single day I pray and every single day you show no signs in return! Iā€™ve been doing this all my life. I had no childhood just so I could pray to you for some stupid powers that donā€™t seem to work! Do you really wish for Hyrule to crumble at the hands of that monster? Do you want me to fail so terribly that youā€™d risk the world? Your people? My friends who are risking their lives? My-ā€œ She choked on a sob. ā€œAre you even there?ā€
Link closed his eyes, a sorrowful sigh escaping him. The goddess was testing his patience. Was she just like the rest of the skeptics parading around Hyrule who doubted the young princess, including the king himself? His fists tensed around the hilt of his swordā€¦ some goddess she was and some father the king claimed to be.
A spike of anger stabbed his gut. Screw Hylia, screw Ganon, screw the faithless, and screw the king. If it wouldnā€™t result in exile, Link would give the King of Hyrule a piece of his mind.
ā€œWhat is wrong with me?ā€
The words pierced him like a lynel spear, tearing him from his thoughts and making his eyes widen. Nothing! Nothingā€™s wrong with you! He wanted to scream out but his throat went dry. Dry with his oath to the royal guard and his appointed positionā€¦ he was only her protector. But doesnā€™t being her protector also permit him to support her and protect her emotionally? The thought made him furrow his brows.
ā€œTell me! Am I really that worthless? Am I not worthy enough to wield Hyliaā€™s great power?ā€
Her last cry cut the tether holding him down in place. He couldnā€™t stand by. Not anymore. The blonde set his sword down and descended the stone staircase.
Ice water surrounded him and he sucked in a sharp breath as he waded through the spring. How did she do this all the time?
ā€œLink.ā€ His pointed ears caught her whisper as she turned around. Her wide, green eyes locked onto his soft, blue ones as they reached for each other at the same time. Her legs gave out as she stepped toward him but Link was quick to wrap an arm under her knees and pull her against him.
Her lips were as blue as the fading sky and her face was paler than the color of snow.
I knew I should have pulled her out sooner. Link gritted his teeth as he internally kicked himself. If she developed hypothermia heā€™d never forgive himself.
A sob racked its way up her throat and she wrapped her arms around his neck.
ā€œLink, I-Iā€™m sorry.ā€ She wiped away a stream of tears with her palm. ā€œI feel nothing-ā€
The knight shook his head, tightening his arms around her shivering form.
She worked so hard, he saw that. Every minute, every day, every hour. She was so dedicated to helping her people, that was what mattered. His chest achedā€¦ he wished he could tell her he disagreed with her fatherā€™s harsh remarks on her and her training. He wanted to tell her that she was more than a princess to him.
That he loved her.
The thought sent his heart in a frantic spiral. He had broken the biggest rule of all. He had taken a hammer and shattered it with little regretā€”if any at all.
ā€˜Donā€™t have any personal relations with the princess, itā€™s strictly professional. For your only duty is to protect her. It is treason otherwise.ā€™ His captainā€™s words echoed through his ears. In other words, he warned not to fall for the princess.
But Link didnā€™t just fall, he stumbled into the inevitable chasm and hit the ground rolling. Whichā€¦ how could he not? There had to be some exception to that rule because lust wasnā€™t his driving force, no, he was undoubtedly and truly in love with her.
His father would be ashamed of himā€”-well the knight side of his father anyway. His captain would absolutely be ashamed of him. Though, Link couldnā€™t find it in him to care.
Heā€™d tell her, but first he had to make sure she didnā€™t freeze to death.
Link set her down by the tent he had assembled prior to Zeldaā€™s training. He rummaged through his bag before he handed her a set of her warm winter clothes, raising his eyebrows in a silent question.
She sniffled and nodded once. A few wet strands of gold falling into her defeated eyes. He fought the urge to brush it behind her pointed ears.
While she changed, Link picked up his pile of wood to create a makeshift fire. He pulled out a piece of flint from his bag and struck a stray rock against it, creating a spark that fueled the flames.
He tossed a few more sticks in the fire.
ā€Where should Iā€¦?ā€ Link turned toward Zeldaā€™s voice, his eyes softening upon meeting her own. She was standing with her ceremonial dress in her hands; Water droplets dripped from its ruffled edges.
He took the dress from her grasp and gestured toward the orange flames.
ā€The fireā€¦ā€ he murmured.
ā€Oh yes, of course. Thank you.ā€
Link nodded as he laid the dress on the stoneā€”out of reach from the falling snow. He reached into his bag once more, grabbing a spare set of his clothes. He found a secluded area and peeled his tunic off his torso.
The freezing air pierced his skin, making him wince. He seriously didnā€™t understand how Zelda had done this the last four nights. He would have a word with the king, this wasnā€™t safe at all.
If he had a daughter, heā€™d never treat her the way Rhoam treated Zelda and he certainly wouldnā€™t force her train relentlessly in the frozen mountain with no support or praise. No, if he had kids they would be supported to no end.
Link fastened his spare pair of boots and in little to no time he returned to the camp.
His blue eyes flicked to Zelda who sat on one of the stones near the fire. Color had returned to her face and her lips were back to its pink tint. Her eyes were locked on the dancing flames and her brows were scrunched together.
Oh how badly he desired to see an ounce of her smile. He missed it. Terribly. But with the calamity looming near and the weight of their burdens nearly crushing them, the rarity of the emerald eyed blonde cracking a smile had multiplied tenfold.
Link swallowed and cleared his throat before speaking. His tongue felt heavy in his mouthā€¦ voicing his thoughts still wasnā€™t his strong suit but heā€™d do it for her.
ā€œPrincess. Thereā€™s nothing wrong with you,ā€ he finally spoke, wrapping a wool blanket around her shoulders. His forearms rested on his knees as he stared at her.
A heavy sigh escaped her. ā€œLink.ā€ She shook her head, averting his gaze. She let out a sniffle before continuing. ā€œI fear I wonā€™t be able to help you whenā€¦ when the time comes and youā€™ll- youā€™ll die because I didnā€™t train hard enough. All the great princesses before me were able to unlock it! Iā€™m the only one who-ā€œ She grimaced. ā€œWho hasnā€™t.ā€ More sniffles. ā€œSo there has to be only one explanation. There must be something wrong withā€¦ā€
His thumb brushed her tears away. ā€œThereā€™s nothing wrong with you,ā€ he repeated, allowing his hand to linger for a few more seconds.
New tears shimmered in her viridescent gaze. ā€You really believe that?ā€
He nodded, though he noticed her gaze drop and the subtle frown on her lips. She was still unsure or she wasnā€™t satisfied with his answer.
Link moved to sit next to her. His arm brushed against hers, making his heart flutter. He cleared his throat as he leaned back against the wall.
ā€œYes, Zelda, I really believe itā€¦. I believe in you. And even if your powers donā€™t come, weā€™ll be okay. Weā€™ll find another way.ā€
ā€œReally?ā€
He nodded. ā€œReally.ā€
Their eyes met and she raised her eyebrows as her lips twitched into a smile. The blonde knight returned it; her smiles were extremely contagiousā€¦ to him at least.
ā€œThank you Link.ā€
He gave her a nod before shifting his gaze to the flickering flames. They sat in a peaceful silence until Zelda rested her head on his shoulder. Linkā€™s muscles tensed as her hair brushed against his cheek.
ā€œSorry- I hope this is okay.ā€
Link noddedā€”-the only response he could give at the moment. He really, really hoped she couldnā€™t hear how fast his heart was beating.
After a few moments she shifted and she shivered, pulling the blanket tighter around her.
ā€œAre you uncomfortable?ā€ He found himself asking.
ā€œWhat?ā€ She pulled away to look at him. ā€œNo- Iā€™m fine. Itā€™s just cold.ā€ She shivered again and Link hesitantly opened his arms as he averted her emerald gaze.
Seconds seemed like minutes. Blood rushed to Linkā€™s ears.
Why did I do that? Iā€™m crossing a line-
Zelda wrapped her arms around his waist and laid her head on his chest, sending every blood cell to his head.
Oh what am I doing?
He battled his thoughts, insisting he was only protecting her from the harsh cold. Because that's all it had to be. Nothing more nothing less.
ā€œIā€™m thinking about too many thingsā€¦ I donā€™t think Iā€™ll be able to sleep,ā€ she murmured.
ā€œYou need your strength.ā€
She let out an airy chuckle. ā€œI guessā€¦. When do you sleep though? I never see you sleep.ā€ Link shook his head. Always the curious one.
ā€œPlease try,ā€ he responded to which Zelda sighed.
ā€œFine.ā€
Sleep wasnā€™t something Link had often, even when he was younger. He remembered his mother would check on him and his sister, Aryll, to make sure they were asleep. She always found him wide awake, looking out the window into the starry night sky.
Sheā€™d ask him ā€˜whatā€™s wrongā€™ and heā€™d say ā€˜I canā€™t sleepā€™. Sheā€™d then sit on his neatly kept bed and say, ā€˜You get this from your father.ā€™
Link always found that funny, he never believed it because his old man always snored at this time of night and slept until the birds stopped chirping. No way he couldā€™ve had trouble sleeping at Linkā€™s age.
His mom would pat his bed, tuck him in, and sheā€™d start to sing. There were no words to the song, only the melody. As a child, this never failed to ease him into a peaceful slumber. So maybeā€¦
Link closed his eyes and started to hum. His voice was soft as he sang the lullaby, the one that shared Zeldaā€™s name. It was actually his favorite.
His hum carried in the slight breeze. He wished there was a way to stop time so they could stay in this moment forever without a worry in the world.
Zeldaā€™s breaths slowed and her grip on his waist eventually loosened as the sweet melody came to an end.
Link opened his eyes and let his gaze drop to the sleeping princess.
Heā€™d protect her with his dying breath, that was a promise.
The knight leaned down to lightly kiss the top of her blonde hair as if to seal the vow.

FLUFFY!!!
I totally think Link would've done something like this for Zelda at some point.
@zelinktines Read my other oneshots on Tumblr, Wattpad, or AO3!

Link takes some risks to make a certain princess smile
Pre Breath of the Wild
\^_^/
Link knew just how lonely she was. Zelda was currently locked in her room, under orders by her father to study ancient texts that could help her unlock her powers and wasn't allowed to leave or let anyone in. It was one of the few times Link was off-duty and thinking of just how miserable she was made risky ideas flood his head.Ā
He really shouldn't.
Yet here he was, with a piece of fruitcake carefully wrapped in his bag and standing outside the tower to Zelda's room. Night was falling, giving him the advantage of darkness. He knew exactly how far the guards could see and where they'd be looking and when. He waited for the perfect moment before taking a deep breath and beginning to climb.Ā
Like most of the castle walls, Zelda's towers were fairly smooth and difficult to climb. But there were bricks that stuck out and little crevices that he could grab and climb up with. He knew he fell it would be deadly, especially because he was getting fairly high up. But he was willing to risk it to get Zelda to smile.
He pulled himself up to the window that mostly cloaked by the falling night shadows, peering inside. Zelda sat her desk in the corner, staring aimlessly with a horribly sad look on her face. Looking around, Link carefully stretched up and tapped lightly on the glass, just loud enough to get her attention.
She jolted to attention, looking to the window and even through the glass, he could see her eyes light up. Just a few months ago, she would've killed him for something like this but now...now they were friends. Or some semblance of friends.Ā
She hurried over to the window, carefully opening the panes and stepping back so he could climb in. She had the window shut in a heartbeat. "Link! What are you doing here?"
In response, he opened his bag, carefully pulling out the cake and unwrapping it, offering it to her. It had only lost a few crumbs in the process of him transporting it and she smiled, taking it. "You risked getting seen to bring this to me?"
He nodded. "You...I wanted you to feel better."
She looked into his eyes and the sweetest smile ever seen in Hyrule landed her face. "Thank you, Link. I truly appreciate it. Will...will you stay?"
"Are you worried about anyone coming in?"
She waved a dismissive hand. "I'm not to be disturbed for two hours anyway."
"Two hours?"
"Mh hm. You don't have any utensils, do you?"
He nodded and paused, reaching into his bag and producing a fork. "Here."
She smiled again. "Thank you."
She set the cake on her desk and sat back down, gesturing for Link to join her. He joined her at the desk, standing respectfully next to her. He was aware of every sound, and knew that they would both get in trouble if someone found Link in here.Ā
Zelda didn't seem to care. She ate her cake, shoving one of the books over so Link could see. "Take a look. Does that make any sense to you?"
He stared at the page for a long moment, nearly going cross-eyed before shaking his head. Satisfied with that response, she pulled the book back towards herself. "You see, Father thinks something in these tomes will help me. It hasn't so far. I think we risking too many lives on some ancient, cryptic books."
She sighed, leaning back in her chair and looking up at him. He stared calmly back, and after a moment, she asked, "Will you take me to the Tech Lab tomorrow?"
"Sneak you there, you mean?"
She laughed, tossing her head back. "Yes. We may risk my father's wrath but if he tries to do anything to you, I'll say I forced you."
Link let a chuckle slip. "Whatever you ask, Princess."
Her gaze softened. "Thank you, Link."
He nodded.
By the time two hours was up, Link had slipped back down the tower and was found whittling in his room. No one else knew he was there that night...but Zelda remembered it fondly.Ā Even when Link forgot.

[BotW Family and Legacy]: He found the Master Sword at the age of 12.
Alternately - POV: You are his father.
This is a redrawing for an old sketch I made a long time ago, including the draft story of how this Young Link found the Master Sword. It is one of the old drafts I wanna revisit and publish into a proper story.

I think it'd be funny if Link thought that Revali was actually Pretty Cool, like yeah he's rude sometimes and tends to brag but he does have the skills to back it up. Problem is Link cannot express that for the life of them
So you've got instances where Link is like "Revali really nailed it in training today I should let him know I think he did a good job" and they make eye contact and Link gives a thumbs up with the most blank expression on their face and Revali's kind of offended because Link could not have looked less interested in this if they tried only he doesn't say it out loud so Link's thinking "I nailed it" (they are autistic)

wisdomcend asked:
"i thinkĀ  ā€¦Ā  i think i need a doctor ." sheik, very calmly, yknow, as one in shock does-- to link
Meme Tag -- @wisdomcend
Link blanches at the tone in the other's voice, noting that before anything else, hands automatically reaching out to steady the prince to keep him from falling to the ground. Goddess, he doesn't look good, nor does the blood seeping on the other's clothes provide any reassurance either.
A hiss escapes Link's teeth as he slips himself underneath the other's shoulder to offer better support, free arm reaching back into his pack to find a healing potion. At least he had the wherewithal to brew some for himself recently, but he knows that it won't be nearly enough to heal whatever happened to the prince, hopefully just enough to keep him stable.
Passing the small vial to the other, he rounds his hand slightly as if holding a cup, tipping the hand to his lips. << Drink. >>

what do you think his thoughts were at that moment?
this is an insane question and i am going rabid trying to answer it. for context this is about my. link dead on the fucking floor compilation. i. e. "what do you think went through link's mind as he all but DIED in precalamity botw."
i've thought about this before because. well obviously i have. look at how many times i've drawn it. i think context matters more than anything when examining that moment, because it's essentially the culmination of link's entire life up to that point in the worst way possible. you have a kid who has been raised to either win or die. those are his only two options. he's known this for basically as long as he can remember. either he defeats the calamity like he's supposed to and lives the rest of his life as an untouchable gold standard of soldier, as proof that all that pressure and pain he suffered worked, or he dies and dooms everyone he has ever loved to suffer horribly for the rest of their likely very short lives. And i do think he thought about this extensively, because how could you NOT, and i think that he probably believed that death was the most likely outcome. He was raised by a soldier, around soldiers, to be a soldier. soldiers are practical. soldiers strategize for the most likely scenario. they're not pessimistic, but they know how to look at a situation objectively and make a judgement call. Looking at link's situation objectively, it would have been obvious that he couldn't win. he was one kid, a 16-year-old boy, with maybe some above-average swordsmanship skills, but too many variables were missing. he couldn't hear the sword's voice. zelda's power wouldn't manifest. Hylia, who should have been there guiding them through this prophecy that SHE had supposedly inflicted on them, was completely silent. the divine beasts may have given him some hope, initially, but it was clear below the optimistic facade that hyrule was toying with very dangerous forces they didn't truly understand. I think he very likely went into that confrontation with the calamity anticipating death.
what's most interesting to me about the scene of link's death isn't that he fell, but WHERE he fell. because he didn't die in the sanctum, at the scene of the calamity's birth, as one might have expected. he died in an empty field along the road to a fortress that might have been able to protect him. Link, the bearer of the triforce of courage, the boy raised to die a martyr at the hands of the calamity, who had all but accepted his fate before the monster even showed its face, chose to run for safety, what some might call the coward's approach, instead of dying where he stood at ganon's hand. and it seems almost out of character at first, when you think about the person he was when he first met zelda, the person who would do anything in his power to show no weakness, to take the pain and the stress without flinching or faltering. the boy who so completely embodied that idea of "courage." but i think that zelda was the piece that changed him. If it had just been him at that final confrontation, maybe he wouldn't have run. maybe he would have been content to take his final stand and accept the death he'd been promised. but zelda insisted on being there, too. "there must be something i can do to help." and while link was a soldier, more than willing to engage in self-sacrifice, he was also a knight, sworn to protect this girl, and so he couldn't in good conscience sacrifice HER, too. so he ran. he tried to live, at a moment when he should have expected to die. and i think that was infinitely more courageous of him. to go against everything you have ever known and expected is infinitely scarier than accepting the outcome you've always anticipated. Running for his life (and for zelda's) was running into the unknown. escaping death in that way was defying everything he'd built himself up to be, everything everyone expected of him. Who is link if not the hero who faced the calamity with courage? what would he have to be if he could not be what was expected of him? in that moment, he made the choice to step into the unprophesized timeline, into a world where his actions were no longer defined by some great all-seeing power. and that was the most courageous move he could have made in that moment. he must have been terrified.
so what was going through his mind as he made his last stand? Honestly, i think the only thing on his mind was zelda. I don't think he cared about himself, his physical condition, any of it. I think he made the choice to run because of zelda and so he made the choice to take his final stand where he did because of her, too. just before zelda's power manifests, we see him try to continue fighting even inches from death, so gravely injured that he's unsteady on his feet, using his sword to keep himself standing. i think he must have known that he was in no condition to fight anymore, but he expected death to come for him at one point or another. what mattered was that she might live as long as he kept going. that's why he ran in the first place. not for himself, but because zelda was there and zelda didn't deserve to die like this. Even once zelda's power manifests, link only gives up and allows himself to fall once a beat or two has past--once he's sure that there really is no more danger. that she'll be okay, that she can make it past the fort and into relative safety even if he lets go here. He collapses then, and only then, after running miles through fields and woods, already gravely wounded, because in that moment he sees that the danger has past. a soldier's work is only done when there is nothing left to fight. a knight's work is only done when his princess is truly safe.
maybe he was relieved that he'd managed to hold on as long as he had. that he'd been able to find her some form of safety, in one way or another. maybe he worried about what manner of things would come for her once he was gone. maybe he wondered why she wouldn't just leave him and run for the fort. i'm sure there was a flash of regret in the back of his mind, for the family and friends he'd leave behind, for the people he'd let down, for the calamity he wasn't able to defeat. but this was the outcome he'd expected, even if it had come in a slightly different form. Even if now there was a girl hovering above him begging him to open his eyes.

Can we hear more about your ideas for BotW Link's history? Ideas you have for the biology of Hyrule's peoples? TotK headcanons?
Hmmm.... I can answer the first question.
Everything that I have for BotW /Link's history is all part of my BotW / TotK: Family and Legacy series.
That being said...
Link's own Champion Abilty - Flurry Rush - is a family ability from his father's side of the family.
His father, Jun, has the same Ability. Along with his two Uncles - Hagane and Rakurai. And his Sheikah Grandfather, Eishun has the same power and is the master of the Flurry Rush. On top of this Grandpa being the OG Gremlin lmao. (Also later on, Link's sister - Aria - unlocks her own Flurry Rush ability...but it was after the Calamity).
I actually have a fic story that covers this - originally titled "Link's Chronos" - and its about Jun taking his then 14-15 year old son away from his usual Hero's training for a week or so to train him how to use his Flurry Rush abilities. And it's a nice family / father-son bonding story.
I haven't posted it anywhere...yet. All of the chapters and plotline summaries are still very rough and in need of editting!
One day, I'll get to them...
Anyway, here's a few sketches that are based on that story!

I love a good family bonding story. Link deserves to have a decent family...despite what happens.

Fuck itā€™s like midnight but I gotta say this:
I had an AU in my head (thanks to a certain ghost!Wild LoZ fic) this one is where once Hyrule is up and running again (ignoring/retrofitting Tears of the Kingdom) they get visits/visit other nations.
Sbi royal au being one of them, just just, Phil and the boys being royalty and meeting Link and Zelda. I donā€™t even need multiple chapters, just them meeting.
Iā€™m thinking that Sbiā€™s kingdomā€™s main patron is Philā€™s wife Death, so they get a pretty iffy reputation among the other kingdoms. Despite the family being a bunch of dorks their loyal citizens adore.
Philza is goofy and fatherly, Wilbur is charismatic and chaotic, Techno is awkward but really wise, and Tommy is energetic and friendly.
Their kingdom is more of an empire, but outside of trading and wars, none of the other kingdoms really know know the family.
Until Hyrule opened up again, and the family first hand got to see their dire need of help, decided to make an ally. Cue them practically adopting Link and Zelda as a part of their family while Neapolitan trio stay over at their kingdom to help out while Phil handles their home kingdom.
(I donā€™t really see Botw Link and Zelda as a couple, I know other people do, but I like seeing them as friends, or in this case siblings who have to deal with a whole ass ruined kingdom, do what you want Ig)
(Also also, I did ship preCalamity Link and Mipha, but afterwards, not really? Plus now I just have Linked Universe stuck in my head as what I think of Botw Link aka Wild, so thereā€™s that)
(Fucking big bro!Twilight and lil bro!Wild has me in a chokehold, holy shit)
Idk, I like making crossovers that probably shouldnā€™t exist, but I force it into working.

I love like, player behaviour being cannon in fics for botw because like, precalamity Zelda thinks link is like this untouchable self sacrificial holy noble knight and then you know she spends a hundred years trying to wake the fucker up only for him to act like an absolute frat bro and himbo ā€œthat technically works???ā€ His way through every puzzle. like the dynamicā€¦ all respect for him lost one he beats calamity Ganon cause like, Zelda had to watch him stare for waaaaayyy too long at those divine beast maps trying to figure out what the fuck to do
