Siege and Storm- Chapter 17 (Leigh Bardugo)
Alina's lying once again, this time to make her new favs look better and cleverer than the Darkling. We all know he's the bigoted one, who's crippling his subordinates by forcing them into his preferred lifestyle, when the alternative is so much more reasonable and so attractive, should poor Second Army know about it!
Except Shadow and Bone- Chapter 17 tells us:
Tumblr media
I suggest two possibilities:
Alina's group's made of Grisha so young they haven't been in the field yet, so although taught to fight in many ways, they lean too much into their instinctual responses. Ěxcept that would make me question Botkin's abilities as an instructor, since he's the one to teach them AND it's disproved in first book too- when Zoya attacks Alina, we learn they're NOT allowed to use their powers during their martial arts training (“Zoya!” Botkin roared. “You do not use power. Not in these rooms. Never in these rooms!” S&B Chapter 11).
Alina made herself forget, because her beloved Malyen reacted negatively here, and she tends to avoid topics he doesn't like.

description : you’re exhausted after training and zoya notices, she takes you on a small date that no one can ruin
word count : 445

Tumblr media
training with baghra and then botkin, both where you physically get attacked, caused you to feel exhausted and littered in bruises. along with being exhausted from combat training and just baghra in general, you were mentally tired too as you had been doing studies recently. as soon as your head the pillow you passed out. you felt so drained.
zoya was getting ready to go to sleep and she saw how much you looked exhausted. before she fell asleep she decided she would take you out tomorrow night for a relaxing night away from all pressures of being grisha.
the next morning when you awoke you tried to cuddle into zoya but was just left with coldness bringing a frown to your face. as you fluttered your eyes opened you saw a note on your bedside table
‘meet me at my room 6PM <3’ was all it said. you looked at the time and realised it was an hour until your first class so you decided to take your time getting ready.
after a long day of training you felt more exhausted than ever and was excited to see zoya at six. you’re hoping that it was a calm night instead of flying around in zoya’s wind. you quickly went into your room to change out of your now dirty clothes and kefta. as soon as you finally actually felt comfortable in your clothes it was around 5:50 so you started walking to zoya’s room.
zoya was preparing for the night when she heard a soft knock at her door, a smile was brought to her face as she quickly walked over to the door. she opened it to see your face with a drained smile the second you saw her. zoya brought you in almost instantly bringing you into a hug and peppering you in kisses. she didn’t like seeing you like this.
when she had gathered everything zoya grabbed your hand and left the room, she was going to take you to the secret place you and her had shared your first kiss. when you had arrived you smiled fondly at the memory of her head in your lap as you both moved closer to the other.
zoya sat down in that exact spot at the joy filled memory and started setting up what you expected to be a picnic. beautifully presented snacks and foods were placed in the centre of the blanket, when zoya invited you to sit down you did so staring at the sunset. everything about this spot was gorgeous.
you loved this spot, especially now because no one could tell you about your duties or training. it was just you, zoya and the rising moon. the stars started glimmering in the sky as the two of sat in the soft silence. everything felt perfect when you were in the embrace of your thoughtful girlfriend.

Article about Botkin and Alina that we didn’t get to see that  I agree with
“To add another thing about spending more time on worldbuilding, the series would have benefitted massively from exploring Shu Han if they intended on bringing in half-Shu Alina. There’s been a lot of criticism for the racism Alina faces in the series, with many people saying the slurs that she is called are unnecessary and are heavy-handed. But the problem lies in the fact that we don’t know anything about Shu Han other than the fact that it’s a neighboring country that is warring with Ravka. At least we meet another Fjerdan in Matthias. The only other Shu character is Botkin who is played by Hon Ping Tang, who acts as the combat instructor at the Little Palace.
In the books, Botkin was once a mercenary who fought in multiple wars and a fearsome warrior. He trains Alina when she arrives at the Little Palace and we get scenes between the two of them where he teaches her to fight. Botkin is also known for favoring other Shu and notably gifted Alina a Grisha Steel knife. And when she thanked him he replied, “Not ‘thank you,'” he said. he tapped the ugly scar at his throat. “Steel is earned.” So why didn’t we get a scene between Alina and Botkin, one where he is training her and gifting her a Grisha steel dagger?
The racism Alina faces is very real and not something that is out of the normal for people of color, but you can’t show the racism without talking about the race. I could have done with fewer meadow flashback scenes and maybe with more scenes between Alina and Botkin where she finds a mentor who doesn’t hit her with a stick or manipulate her, and instead is fair and offers her a bit of solace when it comes to feeling out of place.”

I reread the main trilogy and realised that the ‘steel is earned’ quote was actually originally from Botkin! Zoya probably picked it up from him since he was her instructor (imagine young Zoya training diligently in order to ‘earn her steel’) Zoya was also described as his ‘star pupil’ and I think their relationship has the same vibes as Zoya and Juris in KoS

Chapter 4
“We can’t stay here any longer,” Aleksander said, trying to get himself sitting upright and failing, cursing in some unrecognizable dialect under his breath. He’d taken half a bowl of lentils and drunk a full cup of water, so he’d decided he was healed.
“Well, we are,” Alina said. “Because you’re in no condition to travel. There’s no way I could keep us both on the horse. The Fjerdans wouldn’t have to do a thing. We’d kill ourselves.”
“I can ride,” he said, almost petulant.
“You can’t get up from that bed without holding on to the chair,” Alina countered.
“I can,” he argued.
“You’re barely able to piss in a pot!” she said as he flushed and pressed his lips together tightly. “That’s right, I’m crass and crude, that’s who your precious Sun Summoner is, an ill-mannered orphan, a First Army soldier who’s not going to beat around the bush and flatter you and risk your life and her own for your pride and stubbornness!”
“No one has spoken to me like that in a very long time,” he finally said, very quietly, his face turned towards the window. “No one has dared.”
“I’m sorry,” she said, pushing a lock of hair behind her ear, one that had come free from her plait. “It’s just that I—”
“You’re not wrong,” he interrupted. “I cannot risk your life because it’s killing me to stay here. I promised to keep you safe, even if I’ve done a miserable job so far. I shouldn’t compound my failure.”
“You’re awfully hard on yourself for someone who took out at least five Fjerdans intent on murdering me and got nothing but life-threatening injuries for his troubles,” Alina said, going over to help him into something like a sitting position, the red kefta wedged behind him. She sat down on the edge of the mattress, her hands held loosely in her lap. “You haven’t failed me. I’m still alive and so are you, even though I don’t really know how.”
“You should be safe at the Little Palace now, beginning your training, dressed and fed and tended as the Sun Summoner deserves to be,” he said. “But that’s all still possible—and it’s because of you.”
“It’s not just because I made you a barely medicinal tonic and smeared honey on you,” she said, blushing herself when she heard how the last words sounded. “If there’d been any kvas in the cache, I could have used that.”
“What a waste that would have been,” he said. “Because what you did was more than any salve or ointment. You know that, don’t you?”
“I don’t know anything—you mean about summoning, right? It’s magic, I didn’t—”
“It’s not magic. It’s science. Or rather, Small Science. We do not conjure from nothing. We manipulate that which already exists around us,” he said. His eyes were bright, his hands gesturing gracefully as he took in the air, the light, the empty hearth, the dust motes glittering as they tumbled.
“You make it sound so easy,” Alina said.
“A bird makes flight look easy. But it was born to do so,” he replied.
“When it’s ready,” she said.
“But you are ready,” he said. “More than I could have imagined. How did you light the candle? You kindled it without a match, didn’t you? How did you break my fever, keep me from falling into a coma, without proper medicine or treatment, yet you did it. You are a Summoner but you can control fire, you can heal, though you were only expected to command light.”
“I don’t know what I did. Or how,” she said.
“But I do,” he said. “I know something of it anyway. If we are to be stuck here, the least I can do is begin to teach you, though I’m not as fine an instructor as Botkin Yul-Erdene. I am not as strict as some. You needn’t fear being birched.”
“I don’t know,” she said, staring at her hands. Once they were in Os Alta, she had expected her training to begin in earnest, but here, in this cottage in the middle of nowhere, for all that Aleksander was grievously wounded, it had felt like a reprieve; she could simply be Alina, not this other person, creature, that was now expected of her by the world. By Aleksander. She felt him take her wrist in his grasp lightly. She knew he was waiting for her to lift her eyes to his, that he would wait as long as she liked.
“You might like it, you know,” he said. “To use your power without being driven to it from desperation. You haven’t felt that yet, what it is to coax the light to your bidding, to feel it eager for your direction.”
“That doesn’t sound like science,” she said.
“You’ve managed to get to the crux of a thousand year’s worth of philosophical debate on the nature of Grisha power and merzost,” he said wryly.
“What’s merzost?” she asked.
“The making at the heart of the world,” he said and she thought, everyone knew he was the Darkling, the most powerful Grisha in Ravka, the General of the Second Army, the Tsar’s adviser, but only she knew he was a poet. Luda had known, Alina was suddenly sure of that, but perhaps no one else, no one living.
“That sounds like something above my pay grade,” she said and he laughed.
“It’s not a place to start, that’s true. Though I believe it’s what you did to me. For me,” he said. “Last night, you made light within me, an… alteration. Something finer than mending.”
“It wasn’t that big a deal,” she said. Lied. Which was stupid, because they both knew she was lying, so what was the point?
“I was very far away and you called me back,” he said. “You called me Sasha.”
“You didn’t know it was me,” she said. She didn’t ask who is Luda? but he saw the question in her eyes and how she hadn’t spoken it aloud.
“Yes, I did,” he said. “You’re why I came back, Alina.”

Emery Tarasovna is Tidemaker at the little palace whose life takes an unexpected change.
Emery’s stomach drops at the sight of the Darkling’s second and most powerful heartrenders. The two heartrenders come to a halt before her. “Miss. Tarasovna the Darkling wishes to speak with you,” Ivan says, his voice stern. “Come in,” a deep voice calls. Butterflies form in her stomach as the doors open to reveal the Darkling hunched over a pile of papers and maps. His slate eyes moving side to side as he reads the one in his hand. The Darkling looks younger than Emery expected. With raven black hair perfectly combed back and baby smooth pale skin, he didn’t look much older than Emery, despite the fact that he had been leading the first army since long before Emery was born. Growing up in the little palace she was taught Grisha theory and knew that some Grisha live longer lives but she had always thought they would look much older as the years dragged on but now she’s not so sure. Emery questions how old he really is and if he would tell the truth if she asked. Her nerves start to kick in again. Ivan cleared his throat causing the Darkling to look up. His eyes immediately meet Emery’s.
