The Assamese Alphabet/অসমীয়া বৰ্ণমালা

The Assamese alphabet or Assamese script, is a writing system of the Assamese language. This script was also used in Assam and nearby regions for Sanskrit as well as other languages such as Bodo (now Devanagari), Khasi (now Roman), Mising (now Roman), Jaintia (now Roman) etc. It evolved from Kamarupi script.

The present standard is identical to the Bengali alphabet except for two letters, ৰ (ro) and ৱ (vo); and the letter ক্ষ (khya) has evolved into an individual consonant by itself with its own phonetic quality whereas in the Bengali alphabet it is a conjugate of two letters.

Hello there everyone..!!

I've planned to post a series of writings on different languages. Here I start with my native language "Bangla" (Bengali).

Bangla (বাংলা)

Bengali is an eastern Indo-Aryan language with around 265 million speakers, mainly in Bangladesh and northern Indian. In 2017 there were about 159 million Bengali speakers in Bangladesh, and in 2011 there were about 104 million speakers of Bengali in India, particularly in the states of Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Tripura and West Bengal, and in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. There are also Bengali speakers in the UAE (337,000), Pakistan (290,000), Myanmar (286,000), the USA (258,000), UK (221,000), and a number of other countries.

Vowels ( স্বরবর্ণ- shworborno)

There are 11 vowels in Bengali language.

You can hear the vowel sounds by clicking the following link:

Each of the vowels has their corresponding short form known as "কার". When the vowels are attached to a consonant,the short form are used to write them. The full form of the vowels are usually used if any vowel comes at the beginning of any word.

For example :

"আ" is the vowel for the sound "a" as in "father".

It's corresponding short form is " া‌"

So when we want to write the word "Aam"(means mango in Bengali), we need to use the full form of আ since it comes at the beginning of the word.

Example:

আম (Aam)

But if we wanna write it along with any consonant, we need to use the short form.

Example:

ক্ + আ = কা

ক্ (k)+ আ(aa)= কা (kaa) -- the small vertical line on the right of the letter ক is the short form of the vowel আ.

Now, let us know in details about the sound of each vowels.

অ = o as in "hot" (it has no short form)

আ= a as in "father" (short form: া )

ই= i as in "sit" ( short form: ি)

ঈ= long i sound as in "Seat" (short form : ী)

ঋ= ri as in "ring" (short form : ৃ )

এ= e as in "set" (short form : ে )

ঐ=oi (diphthong: o+i ) (short form : ৈ)

ও= o as in "more","four" (short form : ো )

ঔ‌= ou (diphthong: o+u ) (short form : ৌ)
