Marseille mi-Janvier.

Session 10: Class Work
Session 10: Reflection
vimeo
For this week, I chose "ILS TOURNENT EN ROND - Extract" by Boris Labbé. This is a very interesting animated video. When I first watched it, I didn't know where to focus because it was confusing and repetitive. In this short video, Boris Labbé uses collage techniques to create strange and unique visuals. One of my favorite parts is when a man climbs up a tree and then he jumps down. The animation is very fluid and smooth. It's weird but I liked it.

Kyrielle by Boris Labbé seemed innocuous from afar at first glance – with watercolor painted people inching across the screen, walking in a way that has come to feel familiar in exploring other rotoscope animations. The stretching, slingshotting and human-animal transformations all begin to add a layer of elasticity, perhaps also signaling a rebirth or changing of course - manipulating space and scale across the frame. I’m curious about how the soundscape was generated – it adds so perfectly to the busy-ness that unfolds over time, with lateral forward/reverse and diagonal motion pulling visual attention omnidirectionally. For a moment time feels nearly repetitive, but instead of looping, each miniature world is spinning in its own time – with unique inhabitants in constant motion.

The animation that stood out to me the most this week was Tetarape by Boris Labbé. I thing the ornate designs of the figures represented remind me of designs on Ancient Greek and central Asian pottery. The background music adds to that feeling that these ornate figures that keep multiplying from the center are related as a group to serve a mission. The layered voices and the way the figures go from being arranged in oval-like groups to more organized arrays reminds me of Birds Eye videos that depict an army, or the population of a large city. Although the narrative here isn’t structured with explicit words, the creator uses timing and color to portray their story with layers.

Tetarape, by Boris Labbé, has a peaceful and organized design to it. The colors shown, make a beautiful combination with the dark blue background. I noticed that there was a loop in the animation, and that the looped animation was duplicated and organized into a square. I liked this because it created another layer of symmetry on top of the symmetry created by the drawings. The music helped with the pace of the animation, and made it smoother to watch each duplication form on the beat of the song.
Labbé’s creation allows the audience to observe the shapes and patterns that these looped animations were creating. I feel as though this animation does tell a story, but it tells a story with deeper cultural meanings and significance.

Ils Tournent En Rond By Boris Labbé  - Reflection
This viewing helped me understand the possibilities of the techniques taught in this past weeks class. Stepping outside of the technical execution, the artistry and story behind this piece has given me more inspiration for possibilities on my final project. I think th duplication affect of one image is really powerful and opens the door for messages that drive home deeper messages. I think in this piece specifically, the monotony and homogeneous nature of all people in the moving image shows conformity and a monotonous life style.

Session 1 - Tetarape by Boris Labbé
Tetarape utilizes an abstract expression for the narrative. The origin is a red pattern which generates lines. The lines change position through movement. With the rhythm of the music, the lines transform and divide into multiple abstract patterns. The animation is smooth and the structure is visually appealing. The changes in animation are regular, but the patterns overlap as they move to engage the audience. In my opinion, this animation conveys a sense of evolution and repetition that abstractly tells the story to the audience.

Photos from Manifest finale!
After seven years, I ran my last Manifest: Animation Show & Tell on Tuesday evening. It was a stream broadcast from our long-standing venue here in Rotterdam, WORM, and I was joined via video call by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers who won the medal for most frequent ‘show & tell-er’ at Manifest. We were also joined by a lovely international audience chiming in via the chat box. If you missed the stream, you can watch it back here (along with the 11 previous archived streams, with such guests as Nikita Diakur, Chintis Lundgren, Boris Labbé, and more). Make sure you watch the stream until the end, so you can see the Thank You video listing every person who has participated in some way or another in Manifest over the years. If you ever shared a clip, look for your name!
For this special final event I talked about one of my favorite films ever, Places Other People Have Lived by Laura Yilmaz. We also talked about other memorable films that we remember seeing at Manifest. Every link we looked at can be found in the video description of the saved stream.
Thank you to Hosein Danesh for these photos! If you’re in Rotterdam, keep an eye out for the upcoming WORM event called Words & Pictures (should start in April 2022). Thank you all for attending, contributing or watching. It’s been a wonderful seven years!

SIRKI (Trailer) from Boris Labbé on Vimeo.
Experimental videos HD 24 fps, stereo sound 4 x 2 min
Permanent exhibition at the Space for the Ainu Culture “minapa”. The space was named minapa which means “smile all together” in the Ainu language in the hope of celebrating people's sense of affinity to this space.
Date and time of the opening : 11 a.m., 21st March, 2019 (Japan Time)
Location : Sapporo Station of the municipal subway (between North gate and South gate of the Nanboku line)
Animation technique : Drawing on paper, indian ink and watercolor, 2D Computer.
The Ainu people constitute an indigenous population of Hokkaido, Northeast of Honshu, Sakhalin, Kuril Islands and Kamchatka Peninsula. KAPARAMIP, CICIRI, TETARAPE and RUUNPE refer to different types of kimonos and patterns made by Ainu creators. Patterns are designed, according to the different regions and families, with shaped cut-out clothes, white or colored, and embroideries. These patterns might be inspired by forms from nature, connected to the Ainu daylife and their spirituality. The four animations are a tribute to this art, giving life to elementary forms that evolve infinitely by repetition, dancing in rhythm with the traditional Ainu music Ukouk.
"Sirki" meen "pattern" in Ainu language. The project consist in a small collection of 4 films around 2 min.
