woof, i know the borgias was one of the more prestige-y series to come out from that time, but good grief, compared to the more expensive shows now you can actually see the budget put to good use on sceen. not only the gorgeous costumes where there is a lot of textual complexity with embroidery and different textiles, but everything is lit to show the actors well.
Also all the hair and wigs look good 😩

actually the way this set up for cesare's historical attempt to bring the italian cities and states under vatican heel is framed like an eerie villain arc, like a death of an era hastened by a man, a world crumbling at the edges made even smaller in a pursuit of dominance and power, reflected in the addition of instrumental lines not heard in the first two seasons with faster and more frantic lines that echo the unravelling of the main theme, the darker chiaroscuro emphasis on the lighting choices, the absolute misery of the gothic haunted house greek tragedy cannibalism incest storyline that eats them alive, everyone's worst base instincts crawling out of them and making them into a tragic character on the stage, the way s3 echoes s1 but in a decayed way
extremely sexy and fun very of them

the little details and subtleties in this show go so hard like this scene for instance, when rodrigo said he's glad that juan was born and finally giving cesare a brother, juan immediately turns to cesare with an anticipatory gaze, expecting acknowledgment or perhaps even a heartwarming moment. but instead, cesare goes to pat gioffre’s head, leaving juan disheartened as he turns his head down feeling ignored at a time when he sought connection...

still insane to me that neil jordan wrote this scene and then got into a fight with françois arnaud because he was playing the role with too much sexual tension

Some kind of "everything is the same but fashion is more XV-XVIth century inspired" AU - part 1/?
(a few elements are based on Landsknecht armors/clothing, because they were mercenaries too, you know? But I've been kind and made the palette less... Everything. You're welcome, Fenris.)

Propaganda for Mark Ryder's Cesare. He is hot. But more importantly he is a melodramatic ambitious disaster of a poor little meow meow.
in this scene he just chased a man into the room and killed him in front of his father the pope and all the other cardinals and mic drop quits being a cardinal after splashing murder blood on pope daddy.
Tumblr media
Plus the requisite Vibes with Lucrezia

okay the last picture is just because I love the scenes with the bunny they cuddle whenever they go to be melodramatic at their mom's house

“I was born with a stain. A mark. Like the mark of Cain. But it is the mark of my father, my family. The mark of Borgia. I have tried to be other than I am, and I have failed”
Vs
“I have been in pain, Cesare, for all my years. And you…You are in pain brother, I can feel it”
I’m so :( about the fact that Juan is the one to recognize Cesare’s pain as present and inherent as his. Like Cesare has tried to explain it without it bringing the result he was hoping for in the context with Ursula…but Juan despite his addiction and the fact that he’s become dangerous for the family, has these moments of clarity and in that scene he lets him know he sees him exactly as he is, recognizes that mark they both bear…ironically Cesare being seen, even though he’s wanted it, doesn’t do anything to change what’s to come
And the same way Cesare fails at being other than what he is, there is no brotherhood as a result of their pain, only more failure for them…It drives me a little bit crazy that they couldn’t bond over it. It’s very much “all this time we could’ve been friends”

"I love the fact that Juan can wind Cesare up like nothing else. So it starts off like that - quite jovial, quite fun, quite charming, quite light and frothy." x

I was trying to be kinder to Juan and his failure at Forli, since I've never really considered Cesare's decision not to pass intel about Milan moving on it, but what kind of idiot, educated in warfare, doesn't watch his own back during a siege, especially if his opponent has powerful family all over the country?!
