International Museum Day
According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), a museum is "a non-profit, permanent institution in the service of society and its development, open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits the tangible and intangible heritage of humanity and its environment for the purposes of education, study and enjoyment." International Museum Day, founded and organized by the ICOM, aims to raise awareness that "museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples."
International Museum Day got its start in 1977 when a resolution was adopted at the ICOM General Assembly in Moscow to create an annual event "with the aim of further unifying the creative aspirations and efforts of museums and drawing the attention of the world public to their activity." The number of museums participating in the day has increased in the decades since. Since 1992, there has been a unique theme each year that is devoted to an issue that deals with the role of museums in the development of society and is at the forefront of the global museum community. There has been an official poster for the day since 1997, and in 2011 online resources were expanded.
Participating museums plan events and activities related to the year's theme, engage with the public, and "highlight the importance of museums as institutions that serve society and its development." All museums around the world can take part, with equal access to museums for everyone being a value of the day. Events may last the day, for a weekend, or for the whole week.
How to Observe International Museum Day
Observe the day by visiting a museum! Check the International Museum Day interactive map for official events near you and the International Museum Day Facebook page for up-to-date information about the day. If you are associated with a museum, organize free events that promote the role of museums in society and are related to the year's theme. Posters, information about the theme, and a communications kit can be found on the day's official webpage. You could hold your event today, on the weekend, or throughout the whole week. Make sure to list your event on the day's interactive map.

24 "Listen to your heart" - Roxette
writers Per Gessle, Mats Persson
"This is us trying to recreate that overblown American FM-rock sound to the point where it almost becomes absurd. We really wanted to see how far we could take it."
Part of the UncoolTwo50 project, marking the best singles from 1977-99.
Roxette were formed from best friends Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson in 1986. Took their name from a Dr. Feelgood song. Roxette had some international success in 1987 with "It must have been love (Christmas for the broken hearted)". Second album Look Sharp! came out the following year, lead single was the ultra-bop "Dressed for success".
"Listen to your heart" was the second single. Then came the international breakthrough - "The look" broke containment, spread from Stockholm to Minnesota and then to the world. Various singles from the album were released, to annoyingly little success, until a de-festified "Listen to your heart" turned up on the Pretty Woman soundtrack.
And that was the key for purchasers on Britain. "Listen to your heart" and "Dangerous" were re-released as a double-A side for all people, "Dressed for success" got some recognition, and soon we were into the Joyride album.
There was always going to be a Roxette song in the top 50, and it was always going to be somewhere around here. "Joyride" itself, and late-era waltz "Crash boom bang" were serious contenders. But "Listen to your heart" gets the nod.
It's a lighters-in-the-air song, gently ambling along at the right speed to sway your arms above your head, or rock gently from side to side. Written in a minor key, it's full of hope and yearning; Marie implores her lover to think carefully before leaving. The mood's made by the video, filmed during a concert at the Borgholm castle, and looks sumptuous.
youtube
Had an American rock band performed this, we'd have liked it. The bit we love is Marie's vocal, a bit of an accent, a lot of emotion.
Roxette split, reformed, and continued performing until Marie Fredriksson's death in 2019. A dance cover by DHT had some success in the mid-aughts, but mostly reminded us how good Marie's vocal was.
Passing mention to "Wild women do", Natalie Cole's contribution to the Pretty Woman soundtrack, and on the fringes of the shortlist.

The ruins are really pretty and it’s cool that the history of this Castle stretches back 800 years. Thanks for confirming, ruins always seem really cool! Have you ever been to Borgholm's? You should kidnap me and @leonisandmurex so we can explore the castle and learn some Scandi and Nordic history

Royal Summer Challenge 2024: Day 17
Favourite summer-themed photos of the Swedish Royal Family
Similar to most of the other Scandi Royal Families, the Swedes spend the majority of their summer at their Summer Castle, Solliden Palace. Unlike the other Scandi Royals, they don’t have a yacht so I think we need to start the campaign #GetSilviaABoat, look how happy she looks! Other than the Spanish, the Swedish are the busiest family with Victoriadagen, the Solliden Sessions and concerts at Borgholm Castle all occurring during the summer. As there are posts dedicated to Victoriadagen and Solliden, I have decided to include the best of the rest for this one!
Going clockwise from the top left the photos were taken in: Summer 2023, Summer 2023, 1980 and 2019.
