📖✨ Monthly Reading Wrap-Up
September 2024 Edition
📕 Diavola by Jennifer Marie Thorne Fantasy/Horror | ★★★★½ (4.5/5) A young woman discovers dark secrets lurking in the seemingly idyllic Italian town she moves to, as she becomes entangled with a sinister entity. Review: The toxic family dynamic was rage-inducing but her growth was so satisfying.
📗 Lady Tan's Circle of Women by Lisa See Historical Fiction | ★★★★¼ (4.25/5) A story of friendship, healing, and the remarkable life of Lady Tan, a woman physician in 15th-century China who challenged societal expectations. Review: A beautiful book with characters who are very much a product of their time but their worries and aspirations remain timeless.
📘 Vita Nostra by Sergey Dyachenko, Marina Dyachenko Fantasy | ★★★★½ (4.5/5) A mind-bending novel about a young woman's entrance into a mysterious institute where reality and language twist into something far beyond comprehension. Review: I can't explain what this book did to my brain—Stockholm syndrome comes close. Click 'keep reading' for the full list and StoryGraph links.
📙 Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan Epic Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) The overthrow of a corrupt monarchy sets off a revolution in a world of magic-wielding powder mages and political intrigue. Review: Loved the world-building, but the women in this story come off quite flat.
📕 The Assassins of Thasalon by Lois McMaster Bujold Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) A retired sorcerer-turned-saint is called back into action when an assassination plot threatens the stability of his world. Review: I enjoyed the political intrigue and love a good comeuppance.
📗 Knot of Shadows by Lois McMaster Bujold Fantasy/Mystery | ★★★★☆ (4/5) An unconventional investigation unfolds in a world where magic and mystery intertwine, revealing deeper truths about life, death, and the spiritual realm. Review: This poignant story of vengeance and justice moved me to tears.
📘 The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman Fantasy | ★★★★¾ (4.75/5) A thief with a debt to a ruthless guild must navigate a world full of danger, including goblins, witches, and an epic war, to survive. Review: I loved this book—the tone, the worldbuilding, and the characters, whom I am now completely in love with.
📙 Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree Fantasy | ★★★★☆ (4/5) A wounded mercenary finds herself stuck in a sleepy seaside town and unexpectedly drawn into the warmth of a local bookshop, where new adventures await. Review: Cozy, heartwarming, and sweet in all the right ways.
📕 The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden Historical Fiction | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) A chilling tale set during World War I, blending the supernatural with a soldier's haunting experiences in the trenches. Review: A solid read, but it was a book-reader mismatch because I wanted more fantasy.
📗 The Do-Over by Lynn Painter Romantic Comedy | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) A woman gets the chance to relive Valentine's Day over and over, as she tries to fix her love life and face her fears about commitment. Review: Light and entertaining but the romance didn't stand out for me.
📘 White Cat by Holly Black Urban Fantasy | ★★★½☆ (3.5/5) In a world where magic is forbidden, Cassel discovers his family's darkest secrets and grapples with the consequences of his own powers. Review: I've had my fill of Cassel and his twisted family dynamics.

The Library of Unread Books is open every day from 10 am to 7 pm and is now currently located on the ground floor of International Plaza, a building next to Tanjong Pagar. If you have any books that you’ve bought but have not read (and don’t wish to read), please bring them to us and someone else will read them for you. It’s a wonderful way to absolve your guilt. ♠ Cocaine blues ♠
♠ Cocaine blues ♠ It was a long moment before she looked up at him, a sad smile on her face. Her voice came from a long way away, as if she was forcing herself back to the here and now to respond. “Let’s just say I’m having a bad day. Okay?”
Noddy sat on the edge of a green plastic chair, one of a pair that joined a tattered couch and a compact hi-fi as the only furniture in the room. Morag went back into the bedroom. Banging drawers and slamming cupboard doors kept her company. “You thought he was still here.” Bang. Slam. Thud. “What’s that?” Morag came back into the lounge, a battered leather briefcase in her arms. “Mick. You…

Recommend Reads #5
At the beginning of every month, I will be recommending books (I've read on Inkitt, Wattpad, Amazon and hard copy books). Most are romance, so be prepared to get your heart hurt, fall in love and put into your collection. I hope you will enjoy these. Let me know if you've read it before/have any thoughts on it, or any romance books you think would be up my street.

All about Eve series by Sophie Mckenzie How many: 3 books Age group: Teens
A British teenage romance set in their last two years of school.
1, Six Steps to a girl: Luke spots Eve at her dad's funeral and is the perfect distraction he needs from his messed up life. But, she has a boyfriend and doesn't know Luke exists. At a party, Luke meets Ryan and gives him tips on how to get the girl using six steps. He gives it a go and plans to get Eve no matter what.
'"You see, she gets me. Totally who I am and what I want. My girl. My life. My way."
2, Three's a crowd: Luke & Eve have their first holiday together, but it's not what it seems. Eve's dad owns a hotel in Spain and treats Eve still like a little girl. Luke was expecting a hot summer, but her dad is getting in the way. With this, they spend time away and time apart leads to consequences.
"I'll accept it. I'll get on with my life. Go back to school. But you can't keep Eve locked up forever. And when she's free, I'll be waiting for her. And there won't be anything you can do about it."
3, The one and only: Eve has been sent away to keep out of Luke's arms. Now he is lonely and falls into a pit of despair. Suddenly Eves turns up and wants to take their relationship to the next step; to be her 'first'. Are they the one and only for each other?
"My girlfriend has a birthday. And I get the best present. Eve. Always Eve."
Easy light read, strong and a great page-turner. If you are looking for some teen romance with suspense then I would recommend this. It's been out for years, but these books are something I like to re-read again and again.  Based in the UK and Spain, it brings me home to a teenage school romance that we've experienced or heard of.
All the way through, you are Luke and get to see everything what he thinks and does. Which is interesting, as this was the first time I ever read from a male perspective. As you read the books, you grow with Luke, and he becomes mature as it goes along. I sympathise with him and rooted all the way with any dilemma that hits his way.
Engaging, beautiful, and well written. Plus the illustrations are pretty cool too.
5 stars from me.

The month of self-help books it seems. First of all: The pleasure trap. Got it for my birthday and finally can dive deeper in the psychology of our bad habits, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex and mainly junk foods. A must to all of you who are interested why it's super hard to give up easy pleasures and maintain a healthy way of living. It helps me to understand more why we get addicted to things, what happens in the brain and how to avoid fooling myself. I myself find it hard to give up coffee and even refined grains that are not doing much good to my body when consuming them on a regular basis. There is always room for improvement, but only we can do these steps for ourselves. Secondly: The 5 love languages. Got it on sale and impulsevly, even though I'm not married not being in a relationship. He. But: I do find it useful to be translated not only romantic relationships, but family and friendships as well. We all love and care about our relationships dearly, yet - and mainly in marriages where people get the closest to one another - we screw up and don't know where things go wrong. Understanding the effort and thoughtfulness and having some guidance on where and how to start expressing your love to another human being is a key to happiness. Many times I found that I made mistakes with my family and friends, yet alone in my precious relationships. A lot of mistakes. This book helps me a lot on understanding my own love language and essentially to pay attention more to those around me who speak a different one, because I may need to learn a new one if I want to hold on to good relationships in my life. We are all different. It only makes sense that we express out love differently too. So, if you read any of these, what do you think? If not, and interested in the topics, they are definitely worth grabbing a copy. #booksofthemonth #thepleasuretrap #the5lovelanguages #readingisfun #learninglifefrombooks
