Hi Wendy! I'm looking to start reading Ursula K Le Guin's novels, especially the Hainish and Earthsea ones; but I'm unsure of where to start. The reading order seems on par with that of Discworld. Do you have recommendations, by any chance? And if you have recs for short stories too, I'm all ears! (I'm planning to read at least Omelas) Thank you! 🙏

Disclaimer that as much as I love Le Guin, I have actually...not read that much of her work yet 😔😅 I will tell you what I know, but I will also direct you to vaunted Le Guin Understander @aurpiment.

As far as I know, Earthsea has a fairly straightforward reading order, or at least the main books do: A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea, and The Other Wind. Tales is itself a collection of short stories plus a bit of reference material. As far as I can tell, there are two more short stories outside of Tales: “The Daughter of Odren” and “Firelight.” Of all these, I'm afraid I've only read Wizard and Atuan; I really need to get back to this series.

I'm not sure that there really is a reading order for the Hainish Cycle, unless you really wanted to go in publication order. Of the Hainish works, thus far I've only read The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, plus a handful of short stories (“Winter's King,” “Vaster than Empires and More Slow,” “The Day Before the Revolution,” and “Coming of Age in Karhide,” plus her “pronoun experiments” for TLHOD). I can heartily recommend all of these, though I would start with a book, not a short story, since many of the ones I listed are directly related to TLHOD and The Dispossessed. I do think you, specifically, might enjoy TLHOD.

Published in 1928 'The Hodag: and other tales of the logging camp' documents American folklore in and around Wisconsin where the titular beast calls home. The Hodag is a fearsome beast with horns and spines, believed to be a product of the ashes of a cremated Oxen that had suffered at the hands of its owners. Carnivorous in nature it is said to have a particular taste for white bulldogs. Rhinelander in Wisconsin has The Hodag as a mascot and statues as well as a store can be found dedicated to this unique cryptid.

The new bookshop owner, a perculiar fellow, tells the locals that Mr Fell has 'gone to heaven'. The locals make sure to stop by and offer their condolences to the black goth with the bentley who's constantly in the pub nowadays. Poor lad, losing his husband so suddenly like that. They have a feeling that the naked man who showed up outside the bookshop a few days prior had something to do with it.

Soho mourns their favorite cryptid. The guy who's been around longer than one's grandma could remember. The guy who's bookshop everybody swore burned down at some point and was back the next day. The guy who dressed like a gay-as-in-happy victorian and had his gay-as-in-homosexual goth boyfriend? husband? partner? to match.

Life moves on. Books get sold. A demon daydrinks in the pub next door.

So... about those takes that I have about this two (and a few others that I plan on drawing, don't worry, we'll get there), well, you can see that Phoenix is Crowley while Miles is Aziraphale...

It makes sense, I swear-

At first I was thinking of them but reverse (Phoenix as Aziraphale and Miles as Crowley) because, ngl they could fit either role anyway.

But character-wise? I think this is the best, mostly because of interactions the four of them had on their respective series.

To give an example, this dialogue in Ace Attorney:

It feels strangely similar to Aziraphale's "hereditary enemies" dialogue in the first season.

I might need to write some things down or else I will forget, fuck- (I'm writing this without any plan, help)

But hear me out, I'm not crazy-

Just take a look at Aziraphale's and Miles' fashion sense, that old-timey style they both have (and it's even more obvious with Miles' debut suit), that stubborn personality and undying faith about their side (Prosecutor's Office and heaven), etc.

While Phoenix's and Crowley's personality are more care-free, going their own way, their own side, bluffing away their problems and always chasing or following their "best friend" anywhere.

Phoenix getting a law degree just so he can reach Miles and save him, Crowley always being there for Aziraphale when needed and saving him...

Do you see where I'm getting at?

Also, you remember that scene with the bookshop being on fire and Crowley thinking that Aziraphale was dead?

..."Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth chooses death."

Yeah... the only difference is that Aziraphale didn't dissapear for a whole year and much less left a cryptid ass note behind and it wasn't really his fault-

But the feeling is quite similar, isn't it?

Now, after all the sad or complex feelings aside, let's see more happy things that I noticed:

Crowley's fondness of children / Phoenix's habit of adopting kids anywhere he goes.

Aziraphale liking yellow because it reminds him of Crowley's eyes / Miles finding a particular shade of blue relaxing once in a while.

Crowley's tendency of following Aziraphale like a dog following its owner / Phoenix's constant chasing after Miles (and also having a dog-like personality.)

Aziraphale not admitting that Crowley is his friend (or that he likes his company) / Miles also not admitting Phoenix is his friend (or that he likes his company.)

Yeah... the pattern is getting more obvious the more you look at it...

But I guess this is enough for one post, if you read it all the way, thank you for indulging my delusional brain!

Hey there lovelies! Happy start to the weekend! I truly hope you've had fun this week in some capacity. There's been something for everyone and hopefully we continue to see some hype coming up in the up coming weeks.

Today I wanted to remind you of something that I know you've heard before, but like anything in this life, repetition helps to solidify things so I'm gonna say some of it again. You don't need to prove to anyone your worth. You don't need to beg for anyone to love you and you certainly don't need to be someone you're not for someone else's sake. We all have demands from outside forces every day-- work, school, etc, and a lot of those demands are things we have to cope with in order to function in and be a part of society. Those demands aren't always in our best interest, but for the most part they're at least somewhat reasonable. However, there are going to be times that others have demands on you that are completely unreasonable. Maybe someone expects you to fall into a pretty little category. Maybe someone expects you to understand them when they aren't being clear. Maybe someone expects you to bend over backwards and change for their benefit, but not provide you with the same courtesy.

Whatever unreasonable demands you're dealing with, I just want to send you a reminder that you are allowed to say no. You are allowed to set up boundaries to help minimise that kind of behavior. You are allowed to just be you, and to continue to shine being you. Nothing is black and white, so it may not be easy, and may not be viable, or safe for some people-- I absolutely get that, and you should always keep your safety and security top of mind. But if you have the wiggle room, and you can set up those boundaries, remember there's nothing wrong with wanting to continue to be you, the way you are and defending that you.

You are wonderful lovelies, and we all have things in life we can improve on, but you being your beautiful, unique, authentic self is a right, and you have every right to protect the parts of you you hold dear. You don't have to prove to anyone that you are worthy of love just being yourself-- because you already ARE worthy of love, and light, and good things.

You don't have to fit into a neat little box to be loved, or valid. You are already both of those things, and sometimes it's hard to see it in ourselves-- so this reminder is from me to you, from the crew, to you, that you are wonderful just the way you are. Rest well and be kind to yourselves lovelies, you deserve it.

Aziraphale, despite being able to sense love, mistakes Crowley's love that's been around since the Garden as background noise. Crowley is exasperated when Aziraphale says as much. And one of the inspired-by fics - you play with my feelings (right from the start) by PenroseSun is a hilarious version where it's flipped and Crowley despite being able to sense desires hasn't realized that Aziraphale wants him.

I'm not sure Aziraphale would actually be horrified by annotations in the margins. Marginalia is a delight to find in historical books, and he was around when they were normal. Canon even says he added two whole verses to the public corrections notes of a Bible page, and loves the Bibles with errors in them.

I think, if anything, part of why Aziraphale isn't sure how to feel about Bookstore Cryptid!Dream is that those annotated versions are far more likely to show up mysteriously in Dream's Library than they are in any estate sale, and Aziraphale absolutely covets them.

Their relationship clears up a little bit once Aziraphale realizes he can just ask for what he's seeking, and that, for Dream, all the books in the world are effectively his already, and it's just a question of where in the Greater Library that is the whole of Earth they happen to be at the moment - that's why it's called "Library" after all - the books stay his, return to center, always. (To which end, Dream is perhaps less upset about the Agnes Nutter books than Aziraphale is. And, indeed, is the only one who has a copy of the one Anathema burnt - waiting until the day either she, Adam, or Aziraphale needs it again. Huh, why are they all A names?)

But Aziraphale will never entirely get over the sheer scope of Dream's collection.

As far as he's concerned, Heaven has nothing on the Library. (And you just know there's angst there before he gives up on them!)

I am IN LOVE with Dream and his freaky little bookshop. Mostly bc I would basically move in if it was real, all it's missing is a cat to chill in the window and I'm in heavennnn

Speaking of heaven, how do you think Dream gets on with Aziraphale from GO? Are they besties? Are they (im)mortal enemies bc both of them are battling it out for the rarest books on the planet (and Dream is obviously winning)? They're both my favourite characters ever so if you're into Good Omens at all I'd love to hear your take on it. Personally I think Dream doesn't care bc he wins anyways (except for the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, I bet holds a grudge about that) meanwhile Aziraphale LOATHS him for taking his books and then, God forbid, SELLING them!!! To the general public!!! Imagine!! And that's how Hob and Dream walk in on Crowley "robbing" The Library on Aziraphale's behalf but he honestly doesn't know what he's looking for and in the end just buys whatever book it is with Dreams help. Sorry for the bit of the ramble but yeah!!! I love your stuff!!

I think your take is probably right that they have a somewhat contentious relationship but only from Aziraphale's end 😂 he's torn between being lowkey obsessed with Dream and wanting to be his friend and HATING him, because first of all A Kindred Spirit the likes of which he's never met, but on the other hand he just gives books away! Just hands them out to any old person! Even more sacrilegious, Dream is delighted when a book comes back with annotations because it's a sign of a story well enjoyed and it adds to the history of that particular copy. Aziraphale is going to faint.

Nevertheless they are hanging out and talking about books quite a lot. Dream will just give Aziraphale any book he wants and Aziraphale still doesn't understand it for the life of him. It haunts him but he still accepts the books.

I feel like Crowley WOULD rob the shop before Dream and Aziraphale properly know each other. Just wants to take some rare book Aziraphale is looking for, not realizing Dream would just give it to him because his whole ~thing~ is uniting people with the books that they need. Dream and Crowley run into each other when Crowley's robbing him and before Dream can even say that he can just borrow whatever he wants Crowley is flinging a dictionary at his head and fleeing the scene. Then Aziraphale makes him go back the next day and apologize because listen we can't afford to make an enemy of this guy who has all the rare books in the city!! Honestly!!

Dream's only reaction was like "yup, normal risks of being a bookstore owner. I face physical violence on the daily." If Hob was there he would not have found it funny though 😂 he might have been /prepared/ with an atlas in Dream's defense. A fistfight might have ensued. Learning that Crowley was a demon would not have put Hob off from the fight in the slightest. While they're hitting each other, Dream and Aziraphale are having tea.

Continuation of This Post on how The Second Coming is all of Humanity because I wrote that one on my phone and there was a lot more thought that went into it. (Please read that first hahaha)

One thing any fandom forgets over time is that we, the audience, have the privilege of an Omniscient Perspective. We have knowledge of The Narrative. That's how we're able to rationalize Aziraphale's decision. How we're able to forgive him for what he had to do. It's called a Meta Analysis for a reason.

Do you know who doesn't? The humans in the story.

As far as they know, Aziraphale disappeared. Without warning. Without any word of goodbye. How does this affect the people around them?

How does it affect Maggie, who was suddenly left without her landlord (and all his other tenants)? The People of Soho who know Aziraphale as a well-meaning cryptid? The Bookshop that was a Soho Safe Space that the MAFIA has been trying to get for years? The restaurants that were always miraculously restocked and small diners that were kept in service because they were Aziraphale's favorites and he never let them lose business? Their friends?

And the only side they have as an explanation is Crowley's. And Crowley would probably drunken rant, and they would pity him, of course they would. And over time, it would be the only side they could hear. Without knowing Aziraphale's side, who would they believe in more? (Don't get me started on their reaction when Crowley starts spouting how 'this was not the first time Angel rejected me', or how Crowley would try so hard to stop ranting about Aziraphale, which would only make him seem guiltier).

Look back at the fandom's immediate initial reaction to the Last 15 Minutes. How instinctively people sided with poor Crowley. That is what's happening here, except without The Narrative to give us a meta commentary.

So when Aziraphale comes back to thwart the Second Coming, Crowley sighs and goes along because he gets it. He knows Aziraphale. He knows that Heaven is toxic, and Aziraphale is a victim. He's sad, but he gets it.

The humans don't.

Cancel culture is prevalent and does not care for your backstory.

And resentment brews deep in those who were abandoned.

And poor Muriel is trying so hard to explain what's going on, but we've seen how Heaven keeps its angels in the dark under the guise of Order. They won't have the clearance to provide any meaningful information and evidence to defend Aziraphale. If they could even contact him.

Instead, they're left on a Fully Populated Earth, overwhelmed. They're accompanied by a Sad Demon that she learns is the kindest demon ever. They're dealing with Angry Humans who are facing the consequences of Aziraphale's sudden disappearance.

They're dealing with the Mafia that is taking Aziraphale's absence as an opportunity to take that piece of land away. They're dealing with the HMRC (I believe this is the IRS in the UK) breathing down her neck and she never learned to do taxes (and they have always been suspicious of Aziraphale so it's worse now that he's disappeared).

(FYI these two things are canon in the Good Omens novel)

And so, as they acclimatizes to earth, they can't help but feel tired and resentful. They try so hard to smile at Aziraphale when he sees them, but it's dimmed with anger. Why did you leave me alone? Why do I have to deal with this? Are they right in what they say about you? Do you know how hard it is to smile when I can't defend you?

And then I talk about how All of Humanity is now the Second Coming.

Crowley asked questions, and fell.

Jesus asked "why, father, have you abandoned me?" and was left unanswered.

Now, it's the humans that ask. Why did you leave us? Why did you leave Crowley? Why should we forgive you?

Good Omens talks about sides. Heaven, Hell, and what Crowley and Aziraphale once referred to as Their Side. Humanity.

Ultimately, Aziraphale chose Heaven. He needs humanity's forgiveness, for abandoning their side.

Aziraphale twice now told Crowley "I forgive you." And it was never in a good context.

Crowley forgives. He doesn't say it outright, but he does.

But now, Aziraphale needs Crowley's forgiveness, he needs Crowley to say those dreadful words, for the sake of humanity.

And they're not talking.
