Hello hello! How is Bookshop 4 coming along? Any tidbits or plot bunnies you can share? 👀

You wanted a novel-length response, right? 🙃

The title is from "A Little Voice" by Sara Bareilles (absolutely SHOCKING, I know). I have no idea why I felt the need to word vomit about the title, but you can find some insight into it below the cut.

Let's see, tidbits or plot bunnies...

I wrote the last scene in February 2024 and the epilogue in July 2024.

I've been focusing on a few other stories lately, but Bookshop is always in the back of my mind. I've been toying with changing up the format a bit... we'll see if that happens or not

Here's a lil snippie... as you may be able to tell, this is unedited 🤣

The ringing phone jerks him awake, neck protesting against the way he’d fallen asleep with his chin on his chest.  He nearly tosses it across the room in the scramble to catch it. “Yeah, hey.” “Did I wake you, old man?”  Wherever Ellie is, there’s a lot of background noise.  She’s supposed to be at [person]’s house, and last he checked that’s exactly where she was. “‘Course you did, it’s…” Joel pulls the phone away from his face, frowning at the time.  “Girl, you better be callin’ from outside the door because you forgot your keys.” Static crackles over the line, like she’s covering the microphone, before Ellie says, “Look, I need you to be cool about something.” “Ellie—” “Like, really cool.  Like, cooler than you’ve ever been in your life.” “Jesus Christ,” Joel grumbles under his breath, already getting to his feet.  “Don’t tell me you got arrested.” “I didn’t get arrested,” Ellie responds dutifully.  “So, are you gonna be cool or do I need to call Tess?” He throws his head back, inhaling slowly through his nose as he shakes his head. “I’ll be cool until morning. Where are you?” “Uh…”  More muffled conversation, then, “The corner of [street] and [street] in [place].  I need you to come get us, and Jesse and Dina need to stay over.” This kid’s going to be the death of him.  “[Place]?  The hell you doin’ out there?  You’re supposed—” “You said you’d be cool,” Ellie interrupts.  “And you’re always on me about calling even if I do dumb shit and think you’re going to be mad, so you should be happy I’m fucking listening to you for once. Can you come get us?”

Picture it: New Jersey, 2024.

I driving home from a famiy thing upstate and had my all-Sara-all-the-time playlist on. I've listened to it a ton, know all the songs, etc., but I find that driving generates so. many. ideas. It also gives me the opportunity to really internalize song lyrics, since it's me, the car, and my playlists.

So I'm sitting on the approach to the George Washington Bridge (where it goes from like 6 lanes to 3, because it's not a heavily traveled bridge or anything). Now, I am at a complete stop, have moved maybe 3 car lengths in 20 minutes, and basically sitting like Joel when Ellie isn't tired.

"A Little Voice" comes on. I'm half-daydreaming, half-listening, and I catch the lyric:

No amount of remembering the better things Will make the bad ones go away.

My brain goes: EllieEllieEllieEllie.

I immediately restart the song because I hadn't been paying enough attention to the lyrics.

Well, here's an accurate (if non-chronological) depiction of me in the car as I pay close attention to the song:

The acknowledgement that trauma remains with you, even after you've learned to accept it.

The finding a way to express yourself when words don't cut it.

The risk you take of putting it all out there.

The realization that part of you isn't there anymore.

It all positively screamed Bookshop 4.

Anyway, it took me another 2.5 hours to get home and I listened to that song and only that song the entire time.

I only realised when I had already left NYC that there are several Shakespeare & co there, so I went to none of them...

In Boston I did go to Trident and Newbury Comics, but either it was raining or I was in a hurry, so I didn't take any pictures. I didn't have time to go to Papercuts, like someone suggested when I asked though, which is a shame

I think my worst trait is that my nosyness overrides my moral compass in terms of giving people privacy like… I’m not gonna open a diary but if a diary is accidentally left open I’m reading that page. If you’re typing something interesting on your phone on the bus I will be reading over your shoulder. And simultaneously I am so anxious about people doing the same thing to me so I’m super careful about what I leave out and if people can see my screen when I’m on my laptop or phone.

what i want to play in Solo But Not Alone 4

So, there's a charity bundle on itch.io right now, Solo But Not Alone 4 is a bundle of 125 solo ttrpg-type games.

By ttrpg-type I mean that they aren't played on the computer, they usually have pdfs to download and then you need to bring the things like playing cards, tarot cards, dice and something to write with yourself (and very occasionally a jenga tower). They're usually rather focused on journaling.

If you want to know which games need which supplies, or what genres the games are, there's a handy dandy spreadsheet you can get here.

now, I've not really played any of the games yet, but there's ones I really want to play, and maybe I can make some of you excited enough to buy the bundle and support the charity Take This too. Take This is a non-profit to benefit mental health in the gaming community, but a little look on their website gives me the idea that their resources are useful broader as well, for example they have links to mental health resources for particular ethnic groups. It does seem pretty English-speaking country centric, but still a worthy charity to support I think.

without further ado! the games

Project ECCO is a game you play in a PLANNER. I've scrounged up an old planner I barely used and I'll be using it to play this game. It's a time travel game and you write your answers to the prompts on the pages of the planner you've "travelled" to. There's different ways to "travel through time" in the game, so you use dice, playing cards, tarot cards and a coin to determine what day you're writing on and what prompt you're fulfilling. I like the variety in methods, and i like that i'll be having limited space to write (although it's VERY little on the weekends. we'll see what i can manage on 3 lines)

If you want to play just this game you should definitely buy the bundle, it's usually 15 USD, while the bundle is just 10.

Corporate Onboarding is here mostly because of the formatting, I'll admit. But the formatting is so cool! It's AVAILABLE AS A POWERPOINT FILE. Also pdf, handy if you don't have the ms office suite. It fits on just 19 slides, but it claims that the average session is about an hour, which sounds about right. It doesn't have a lot of introspection far as I can tell, you need to find all your bosses to report to them without going over 5 warnings, and you have some stats for your character and all that.

Fox Curio's Floating Bookshop is another game worth getting the whole bundle for, normally 16 USD and it does seem worth that.

The game has such cool worldbuilding, you've got different towns and seasons and events throughout the year. I can see myself dedicating a whole notebook to this. And it's got a beautiful pdf (that's kind of formatted for print, but the print book's sold out). Also a fishing mini game you play by dealing a deck of cards.

5 act play is a game that gives you some guidance for the plotting of a play. It uses tarot, but also gives an alternative using dice and playing cards. It really USES tarot, you are expected to have a guidebook or look one up for the meanings of the cards and use them to inform characters and themes, but it does have tables for what you do with some of the cards. It's Shakespeare inspired, using examples from Much Ado and Romeo and Juliet to help you, and you're expected to write a tragedy or a comedy.

The Peace Engine is a game you use a jenga tower to play, which I don't currently have access to, but it looks incredible and I'm considering asking around if I can borrow one. You have to pull bricks from the tower when your scientist gains "burnout" and if your tower falls you fail. It has a complex system and it seems very cool.

Again a game more expensive on its own, so get it in the bundle!

Glyph is a sort of guide where you make sigils, it has a beautiful pdf as well. I like the method it provides. It recommends to be used for enrichment of other games, or just as a fun creative exercise

I just did something that i was freaking over for the past 2 weeks (it took me 2h in total)

I walked into bookshops and libraries around town asking if they were looking for employers. And then for the ones that said yes I sent them an email. It took me 2h cause the libraries were really far from each other (30 min by bike)

Sending the emails took me 2 min

Anxiety has been defeated 🙏✨

bookshop is SO much more expensive and a way worse site for finding exact items such as rare copies and hardcovers. just found one newish book ive been considering at $14 to be going for $26 on bookshop which is $10 more than amazon for paperback and $6 more than hardcover…. like at that point just donate directly to local bookstores

i use thriftbooks pretty much every time i want a book/comic/dvd that isn't local because i don't buy new, or ill just buy from direct sellers, and the prices are generally like. Fine. i have noooo idea what's going on with bookshop that its prices are like that in comparison

while i understand why it doesnt happen, it does kinda irritate me when i pay 30+ dollars for a physical book and the shipping price and taxes, and then i dont also get a pdf copy of it (when the same store is selling pdf copies).
