Who is hotter? Cornwell or M’Benga TOS?

I feel like I'm going crazy there's barely anything online about the actor who played M'Benga in two episodes of TOS: Booker Bradshaw.

with literally one of the most prolific fan communities in history how is barely nothing online about the guy. the three sources for the wikipedia page are:

His IMDB page, which isn't a real source

A PDF of someone's master's thesis from the 90s: "The African-American community of Richmond, Virginia: 1950-1956"

A google archive scan of an article in the Washington Afro-American from 1973, when he was the male lead playing opposite Pam Grier in her first leading role (per the movie's wikipedia, he gets shot in the dick and dies from it??)

And that's it???

From just those sources I want to know everything about this guy...his dad was a trustee of Virginia Union and Virginia State, he went to Harvard, spoke three languages, he was a Motown executive?? And played a character who is now a main character on an airing star trek show? I have questions and the internet is not providing answers

Dr. M'Benga

Being Starfleet's specialist in Vulcan physiology, it would have made more sense to have M'Benga as the Enterprise's Chief Medical Officer, seeing as it had Starfleet's first and only Vulcan serving on board.

My only concern is how the episode Amok Time would have turned out.

Look at that deadly serious face. Would you believe there are two amusing stories involving this gentleman? One from a scene involving his character, the other involving the actor behind the scenes.

The idea to bring in a doctor specifically trained in Vulcan medicine was a good one. But we were not introduced to Dr. M’Benga until halfway through the second season in an episode titled “A Private Little War.” It is because of his expertise that we know all those bizarre life scan readings are merely a sign that Spock is concentrating his efforts on healing the severe gunshot wound he had received on the planet.

Up until this point, we have only seen the stern, serious side of M’Benga. But we find in this scene that he has a wicked sense of humor (and an excellent sense of observation). He informs Nurse Chapel that Spock has been conscious enough the entire time and most likely even realized Christine had been holding his hand earlier. And then you see this little grin as poor Nurse Chapel looks mortified and more than a little miffed.

There is one other scene that is not exactly amusing in itself, but has an side story that is. This is the scene where Dr. M’Benga gives Christine explicit instructions about what to do if Spock shows any signs of consciousness.  But when the time comes and Spock commands her to hit him as hard as she can, Christine just can’t do more than a weak slap. Then Scotty enters and when he sees what is happening, pulls her away. It’s up to Dr. M’Benga to bring Spock back to full consciousness.

Which he proceeds to do by pulling his arm back… and delivering a wallop of a slap that even Scotty would be proud of.

And which Spock calmly deems quite sufficient. But Leonard Nimoy was actually pretty irate just after the slap. The filming of this episode was already behind. While the crew set up for this scene, Leonard Nimoy pulled the actor Booker Bradshaw aside and told him he didn’t want to have to reshoot the scene (because he had a paid appearance scheduled that evening). So according to Bradshaw, Nimoy told him no stage slap - to give it everything he had. So… when the time came, Booker Bradshaw wound up and delivered a slap so hard, it knocked Leonard off his feet. And the Vulcan ears off Leonard. Which sent the stage crew and everyone else on the set into peals of laughter but Nimoy did not see the humor at all. Bradshaw said to his dismay, the star was quite angry and made it clear that this time, he better make it a stage slap.

We see him one more time in “That Which Survives” when he is asked to find the reason Ensign Wyatt died. Dr. M’Benga replies that Dr. Sanchez (in the background)  is already performing the autopsy and promises to report the results to Mr. Spock as soon as he knows them.

Later, Dr. M’Benga’s expression demonstrates his exasperation at not being able to give Mr. Spock an explanation for Wyatt’s cause of death, which Dr. Sanchez had established as cellular disruption. And that’s the last time we see Dr. M’Benga.   Memory Alpha seems to think that Dr. M’Benga was meant to be there from the start and that M’Boya was simply a misspelling of his name in that first draft.  Yet according David Tilotta in an article on StarTrek.com,  Dr. M’Benga was not added to the cast of “That Which Survives” until a few days before filming. In the very beginning, the doctor’s name was given as M’Boya. Then as the script revisions progressed, the character of Dr. M’Boya was dropped and his lines given to Nurse Christine Chapel.. But  Marc Cushman’s These Are the Voyages: Season Two  backs up what David Tillota wrote, saying that one of the researchers from Kellam de Forest suggested to Fred Freiberger that the name should be changed to M’Benga on September 13th. However, he makes no mention of the previous change of M’Boya to Nurse Chapel doing the autopsy. Still, it does seem likely someone would have realized there was no need to create a new doctor when Dr. M’Benga had already been established as highly regarded by his CMO.  Story Editor Arthur Singer turned in a final draft on September 20th and page revisions were added on the 21st. Once Fred Freiberger made a few more changes and created the revised final draft dated September 24th and the page revisions were inserted the next day. Just in time for the first day of production which again backs up David Tilotta’s assertion that Dr. M’Benga was close to a last minute addition/revision. 

Dr. M’Benga was played by Booker T. Bradshaw of Richmond, Virginia. Bradshaw’s background is quite impressive. After working at his father’s life insurance company, Booker decided this was not the life for him and entered Harvard University. During his junior year he appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour as a folk singer. Not only did he win three times, but he made it to the finals at Madison Square Garden.  Booker did return to graduate from Harvard in 1962 with the intention of becoming a lawyer. Fate intervened in the form of a Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London but not before he had performed at Carnegie Hall. Bradshaw did receive an honors certificate for his time at the Academy of Dramatic Arts which he completed by touring England with his Academy students as part of a Shakespeare repertory theater.   *photo credit: http://quod.lib.umich.edu/b/bhl/x-hs8414/hs8414

After finishing the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, you would think Booker would head straight into the acting world, wouldn’t you? Oh, he had done some stage plays in Harvard and a few other venues, but another opportunity arose. Bradshaw’s connection in the music world lead him to working for Motown Records in Detroit as their international manager. He specifically arranged the European tours of both the Supremes and the Temptations.  According to several stories he could speak anywhere from three to nine languages, depending on the source. Around 1967, Booker Bradshaw came back to the United States to resume his acting career and joined a  repertory theater in Rochester, Michigan run by one of his mentors, John Fernald. Fernald was formerly Head of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. Bradshaw even wrote the lyrics and music for a play produced there titled And People All Around, which was based on the murders of three civil rights workers in Mississippi. He also appeared in several plays at the Ebony Showcase Theater, including Day of Absence and Happy Endings in 1967. One of his co-stars in both plays was Isabel Sanford. Some of you may remember her as Louise Jefferson in The Jeffersons, which ran from 1975-1985. Booker Bradshaw went on to have a very full and successful career in television and film, both as an actor and as a writer. He landed parts on a number of television shows, including several episodes of Tarzan, the Mod Squad, and The F.B.I. In fact, as this newspaper clipping shows (which was actually a press release that appeared in many newspapers across the U.S.), it was thought his role as Special Agent Harry Dane might  be a semi-regular one. However, he is only credited with appearing in two episodes.  *clipping from p. 35 of The Jackson Sun (Jackson TN), November 7, 1969. 

Bradshaw’s movie appearances were fewer, but included two that attained some notice at the time they were released. Above is a publicity photo from The Strawberry Statement (1970) which was loosely based on the Columbia University protests of 1968. He played the character Lucas who is seen on the far right. Fellow Star Trek actress Kim Darby was the female lead named Linda. 

But Booker Bradshaw’s biggest role probably was that of politician Howard Brunswick in Coffy (1973). He was the boyfriend of the title character played by Pam Grier. She played the title character, a nurse who is out to get revenge on the drug dealers who were responsible for the death of her sister. Being a folk singer/media mogul/ theater actor/TV & film actor was evidently not enough. Bradshaw also became a quite accomplished television writer. Between 1973-1976 he and David P. Lewis together wrote scripts for shows like Columbo, Planet of the Apes, and McMillan and Wife. Bradshaw went on to do scripts for Different Strokes, Gimme A Break, and four episodes of The Richard Pryor Show. During the 80s he became a voice actor. Sadly, his impressive career came to an end when he died suddenly of a heart attack in 2003.

Fans celebrate the casting of Nichelle Nichols as Uhura as a moment for actors of color, which they should be.

But I also wanted to spotlight the casting of these iconic guest starring characters, seen in episodes of TOS.

Percy Rodriguez was cast as flag officer Commodore Stone, who was Kirk's superior in the chain of command. Stone is one of the officers that presides over Kirk's court martial.

Booker Bradshaw was the original Dr. M'Benga, seen in two episodes of TOS. at the time, M'Benga was Starfleet's first and only medical specialist in Vulcan Physiology, having spent a year's residency on Vulcan.

One of the finest minds in computer technology in the 23rd century, and creator of the duotronic computer, Dr. Richard Daystrom, was played by William Marshall, whose work in Shakespeare, and his roles as Paul Robeson and Frederick Douglass, added to the gravitas of his portrayal.

A flag officer, a specialist in Vulcan medicine, and one of the finest minds in a field of technology, played by actors of color, during the turbulent 1960s.

"Coffy" (1973) is an action film written and directed by Jack Hill and stars Pam Grier in her breakout movie, which helped pioneer her career through the blaxploitation genre. The film was a success at the box office, grossing $4 million on a $500k budget. Black women in leading action roles became a popular trend in the 70s. For example, films such as "Cleopatra Jones," "T.N.T Jackson," and "Sugar Hill" were films with strong female leads. It was a far cry from previous roles where Black women primarily earned parts as servants or homemakers in prior decades. Roy Ayers produced the soundtrack to "Coffy," a mixture of jazz and funk. It reached #31 on Billboard Jazz LPs.

Being that we're in the middle of Black History Month and Blaxploitation Cinema happens to be my favorite Exploitation movie genre then of course I'm gonna review 1973's "Coffy" which made it star the Queen herself Pam Grier into an icon and was one of the first woman action hero to kick all your asses.

She is after all the baddest One-Chick Hit-Squad that ever hit town!

Directed by Jack Hill and starring Pam Grier, Booker Bradshaw, Robert DoQui, Allan Arbus and Sid Haig.

It’s a mission the band began in earnest with underground missives. (Metal Injection advised readers to “wreck your speakers with 156/SILENCE” on the eve of 2017’s Karma EP.) No two 156/SILENCE albums are alike, from the unhinged frenetic chaos of Undercover Scumbag (2018) to the gloriously savage and technical Irrational Pull (2020), which Metal Hammer likened to Converge and Botch. The diverse ruminations found in Narrative (2022) took things even further. 

People Watching continues the prolific outfit’s tradition of steadfast evolution. Produced by Jonathan Dolese (D.R.U.G.S., Emmure, Attack Attack!), the album embraces melodic hooks without sacrificing any heaviness. The band’s golden age of metalcore roots shimmer and swirl together with influences ranging from Aphex Twin to Thrice, Glassjaw, and Deftones, from movie soundtracks to horror games. As the band says: “People Watching is truly the culmination of the last nine years of 156.”

Update re: Joker Folie A Deux. (Why I think people didn´t like it; and how current Hollywood directors are behind the curve.)

And indeed, although the Guardian reviewer Peter Bradshaw https://www.theguardian.com/film/article/2024/sep/04/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-and-lady-gaga-musical-spirals-out-of-tune

actually liked it better than did Maher of the Times, the Guardian and other publications are now publishing a slew of articles, as to how this movie is losing money hand over fist ($200k at the box office), and their only hope is to recoup it on streaming!

Well: I suppose that's really ALL that counts, in Hollywood! 😏

As one or two have commented, I really don't see how they can have spent so much on a movie, without action scenes or special effects.

But the Guardian Hollywood writer seems to think it bombed, largely because it rubbed comic book fans, "an important sector of the market", "up the wrong way"..

And this Guardian writer Andrew Pulver reckons it "scolds the audience". Though I don't see how. With a musical? 🙄 With a musical, you can only ANNOY the audience, by making it flat and unentertaining. (If however you make it entertaining, you get the audience on your side. 🙂) And this is obviously no Little Shop Of Horrors…

Well.. You see, I believe the FIRST Phillips movie did rub fans of the characters up the wrong way too, to an extent! 😏 Not everybody liked it. If you look back in time to various contemporary YouTube parodies of movie 1, you can see that a lot of them parody the Phoenix Joker as weak! One I saw even had him falling from top to bottom of those concrete steps! (Though of course he didn't, in the movie!)

Well - again, this Lokean believes this negative box-office result vindicates her theories! And proves that I have the answer! 🙂

People don't WANT an incompetent, clumsy, sad-sack antihero. They want an old-time "rags to riches" story! I BELIEVE! (Even if it has certain ironic touches.)

I also think that a story told by a bourgeois director in which he is basically saying that a working-class rebel of whichever stamp, needs must fail, is ALSO not these days going to be popular. 😏

Yes. Pulver commented: "The core audience [which is WHO, one wonders, according to Pulver? JUST the comic book fans? But for a Hollywood movie to succeed, it has to appeal to more than just fans of the novel or comic book!] received the message that not only is the film very different from the first film, but also that people liked the first Joker for the wrong reasons."

And COULD a LOT of them have liked it, not for conventional superhero movie fan reasons (after all, that was precisely what Joker wasn't) but because they saw the first film as a rare example of "the underdog getting some of his own back", genre? 😄😄

Michael Moore had his finger on the pulse of why the first movie succeeded. (Michael Moore usually does! 🙂)

"Except in this story a discomfiting question is posed: What if one day the dispossessed decide to fight back?"

But Loki and His Own, we'd like to take that a little further, you see! Oh yes! 😄

The public - comics fans included, I do believe - would have far preferred a story in which Arthur Fleck the "Joker", however mentally disturbed he is or isn't, developed into a HERO! In which he grew into a much stronger character. Aided and drawn onwards and upwards, one would think, by his love for the character Harley Quinn. And hers for him. Pity, then, that in this, she is a duplicitous COW, who goes by the dull soubriquet "Lee", not "Harley". 😏

One supposes though that SOME diehard comic bookers would want Phoenix's Joker to develop either into the evil genocidal villain he is in some of the modern comics 🤮, or into the even more recognisable Gotham-destroying terrorist of Nolan's The Dark Knight 🙄.

This just proves, however, that such people are stupid! 😄 And I know that no Neopagan would go in for such obvious Christian right-wing ideological fantasies, which we see right through!

We have something better! (And something we might even be able to sell to the male incel comic bookers, because it is FAR from wimpy! And it offers the underdog a bit of HOPE.)

I DO believe, that a writer such as myself, could and would manage to sell to the public who are tired of wimpy Jokers, and "failure stories", and all such dull negativity, a fantasy that I have already outlined in my previous essay above, and that is far more folksy, and far more Pagan both. ☺️

That would be the rags-to-riches tale of a Trickster Hero! 👍

THAT the public would now buy and lap up, I'll stake my best idol of Loki on it! 🙂😄👍

P.S. Very recent events - much more recent than my writing any of these reviews/musings - have I think proved, that vast numbers of the US public are perfectly prepared to support rebels against the status quo - in real life! Even if in real life, ¨the system¨ turns those rebels into martyrs. What is important to the public, is that they achieve something, however symbolic. Violently symbolic. A bit of ¨own-backery¨, as one might say! 😏

I´m not sure that that was precisely what I was talking about in my essays - but I think we can all see, the way that the public mood is going, and that ¨conventional¨ ideas on the part of directors - like wasn´t Phillips trying to quote some Scorsesean/Roman Catholic bit of ¨moralism¨, at the end of Folie A Deux, according to what I read on Wikipedia - just don´t cut the mustard any more.

People want ¨the terrorist" to win. As long as he is the right kind of terrorist! 😏

As for Tricksters - well - this Lokean will let you all into something! 😄😄😄 The great thing about them, is that they tend to get away with it! 😄 In the long run, they do! (Yeah: so Christians said Loki didn´t. But Christians lie: and they have the wrong cosmological outlook anyway!)
