i don’t go here much these days but i’ve had a headache since last night from crying over losing gavin creel.
losing maggie smith earlier in the week sucked, but she lived a long and full life. her legacy is forever.
gavin is a shock of ice to the system. he was so young. he had so much more to give. i thought we’d see him on stage for decades to come. his influence on my generation of theatre fans is immense. so many young people working in the industry right now owe him so much. he workshopped so many iconic shows like wicked, hamilton and spring awakening, these huge iconic male roles would be nothing without him. aaron tveit posted about how when he was studying musical theatre, he wanted to be gavin creel.
he is a true legend of contemporary broadway.
personally, i first met him when i was about 10 years old. i saw mary poppins on the west end and was so taken by the american guy playing bert — which i discovered during the bows as he made a speech about donations on the way out. a couple years later, he opened the book of mormon in london and i went to one of the first previews — and the obsession flourished. i always thought the connection of seeing him so young and his performance being the one thing i remembered from that show was so special. like a classic teenage theatre fan, i’d stop by the stage door whenever i got the chance and every single time he treated me with such grace and generosity with his time, making me feel so incredibly important. out of my friends, he was my broadway favourite, my performer. if you dig deep enough on my blog, you’ll find our selfies i’d post, the keyboard smashing, the joy i felt because of his work.
later, i got to see him in waitress and into the woods — and despite both being stacked casts, he was always the standout. he was still always my favourite.
this loss is huge. how lucky teenage me was, how lucky we all were.
#gavin creel#i’m not sure how to truly capture his scope#but i am so utterly shocked#and i don’t think i will get over this for a while

Sci-fi writers not being racist and unimaginative challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
I had a dream that I tried to write this recently and accidentally replaced it with footage of me playing Deep Rock Galactic when I tried to post it, so I’ll try my best to not do that.
I know saying that a lot of fantasy and science fiction worldbuilding is barebones and bland is a pretty tepid take. In many fictional settings, the idea of nationality, ideology, and race are conflated. One and the same, effectively. Mass Effect has the Turian Hierarchy and the Salarian Union, galaxy-spanning governments made up of almost singularly the species turians and salarians respectively, who all believe in roughly the same things, have the same broad personality, and have seemingly been stagnant for thousands of years. Deviation from the turian mentality is treated as a unique trait worthy of ascending a random NPC to a supporting character. To all other races, the idea that humans can believe in different ideologies is fascinating. I think it’s an uncontroversial take to say that this is pretty bland writing, and at least a bit racist. Outside of the special and unique (and overwhelmingly European) humans, all other cultures are monolithic and simplified.
I should stop myself here because I genuinely have at least half a dozen essays’ worth of Mass Effect topics I would want to go on a rant about. I should move on.
Orson Scott Card’s writing beyond the original Ender’s Game is also emblematic of this approach. In his sci-fi universe, all of the countless worlds that have been colonized are entirely monocultural. Specifically, they are takes on cultures from the point of view of a 30-something center-right mormon in America in the 1980’s. Highlights include a world colonized by the Japanese which bears the name Divine Wind, which translates to ‘Kamikaze’, which might be in slightly poor taste. There is also a world with a predominately Chinese population that is notable for a) being largely covered in rice fields, and b) not knowing what neurodivergency is. It gives overwhelming ‘I read a Wikipedia article and skimmed a really racist history book and am now an expert on all other cultures” vibes. He also wrote Xenocide and Children of the Mind, so maybe we should stop taking him seriously.
So often, worldbuilding in fiction refuses to reckon with the idea that the nations they depict can be anything beyond overwhelmingly monocultural stereotypes of real-world people. After all, it’s much simpler if all of the aliens are just caricatures of other people that really exist, right? No work needed. Oh no, what's this picture of a T'au doing here?
This took me a while to write because I’ve got a lot of takes on the topic of writing and worldbuilding, and it was hard to figure out what to include and what to save for a more focused post later. On that topic, I do have another one planned focusing on my personal, insignificant takes on the ingredients to make a coherent backdrop for a story, and some hot takes and blanket statements to make about worldbuilding as a whole. It’ll hopefully be something more positive and constructive than this.
EDIT MADE MINUTES AFTER I POSTED THIS: I forgot to include the funniest example of all time, the world of Warhammer Fantasy. There are some incredible examples of this kind of worldbuilding. Kislev, the Lizardmen, Cathay, Nippon, Araby, the Tomb Kings, Bretonnia, all comically transparent carbon copies of the most obvious, stereotypical parts of real-world cultures that managed to become a relatively successful media franchise that helped to launch Games Workshop into the company it is now.
#mass effect#mass effect is actually kinda bad#worldbuilding#orson scott card#ender's game#warhammer#sci fi#short essay#okay but seriously mass effect is baffling#did we all forget the line about autism from the dlc#orson scott card is a hack

Fandom: Falsettos, Book of Mormon, Little Shop of Horrors.
Just a 20M looking for 18+ people to RP with.
Nothing specific in mind, happy to workshop ideas with people. Always happy to try my hand at new characters I might've not tried before. I can do Semi-lit to Lit and/or Mirror, depends on what I'm working with.
I'm chill with rather anything. Smut, angst, fluff, idm. I just wanna do something lol. I RP mainly through discord, though.
Like the post and I'll get back to you?

A Cappella at the Rock (Newtown, PA) — VoicePlay live performances
The annual pop a cappella festival at Council Rock High School North consists of a day of workshops and master classes, followed by an evening competition, then a concert from a professional group that includes a special group number with all the students. In 2017, the featured professionals were VoicePlay (with Erik Winger as their substitute baritone). This event was the middle of a whirlwind weekend for the guys, but they always enjoy doing educational outreach.
NOTE: The video quality for most of these recordings isn't great because the audience member was trying to be discreet and respectful of their neighbors. The audio is okay, though.
.
youtube
This clip is missing the very beginning of the song and a view of the guys, but you can definitely hear them.
Details:
title: Ride
original performers: Twenty One Pilots
written by: Tyler Joseph
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci
performance date: 1 April 2017
My favorite bits:
Eli, Earl, and Winger pulling off that fast harmonized patter live
that rapid-fire percussion Layne does behind ♫ "bullets coming through" ♫
Geoff wandering into the basement on ♫ "I'm falling sooooo" ♫
the gradual layering in the bridge
Eli's big old belts in the last section
Trivia:
This arrangement was originally the third video in their PartWork series, with just Eli, Geoff, and Layne covering all five parts.
.
youtube
The videographer managed to get a view of the stage in this one, albeit upside-down. The guys still sound as fantastic as always.
Details:
title: Aca Top 10 – Broadway
original songs: [0:07] "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q; [0:35] "Sherry" from Jersey Boys; [0:50] "Belle" from Beauty and the Beast; [1:14] "Seasons of Love" from Rent; [1:33] "Master of the House" from Les Miserables; [1:50] "All That Jazz" from Chicago; [2:11] "He Lives In You" from The Lion King; [2:28] "Popular" from Wicked; [2:50] gentle mockery of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark; [2:53] "Phantom of the Opera" from Phantom of the Opera; [3:18] "Hello!" from The Book of Mormon
written by: "Everyone's A Little Bit Racist" by Robert Lopez & Jeff Marx; "Sherry" by Bob Gaudio; "Belle" by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, & Tim Rice; "Seasons of Love" by Jonathan Larson; "Master of the House" by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, & Jean-Marc Natel; "All That Jazz" by John Kander & Fred Ebb; "He Lives In You" by Lebohang "Lebo M" Morake, Mark Mancina, & Jay Rifkin; "Popular" by Stephen Schwartz; "Phantom of the Opera" by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Charles Hart, Richard Stilgoe, & Mike Batt; "Hello!" by Trey Parker, Matt Stone, & Robert Lopez
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
performance date: 1 April 2017
My favorite bits:
Layne's fun scampering percussion run at the end of Avenue Q
Winger and Eli doing their villager voices in "Belle"
the rising crescendo in "Seasons of Love"
the Spider-Man gag
Geoff's growled drop in "Phantom"
that big final ♫ "Hellooooo!" ♫
Trivia:
The guys recorded their video for this medley in September 2014, and performed it on the 2015 Sing-Off tour the following spring.
.
youtube
Although the view is peeking between other audience members, you can still see a bit of the guys' antics during this romp through nonsense lyrics and phonations.
Details:
title: A Crimpella
original songs / performers: [0:55] "Walk the Dinosaur" by Was (Not Was); [1:11] "Witch Doctor" by Alvin & the Chipmunks; [1:19] "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang; [1:23] "We Go Together" from Grease!; [1:30] “Motownphilly” by Boyz II Men; [1:38] "Imma Be" by the Black Eyed Peas; [1:46] "Tutti Frutti" by Little Richard; [1:49] "Shoop" by Salt N Pepa; [1:53] "Jock-A-Mo" (aka "Iko Iko") by James "Sugar Boy" Crawford; [2:03] "Mahna Mahna" from The Muppet Show; [2:14] "Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin" by Journey; [2:38] "Goofy Goober Rock" from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie; [2:41] "MMMBop" by Hanson; [2:53] "Hooked on a Feeling" by Blue Swede; [2:57] "Bawitdaba" by Kid Rock; [3:02] "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" by Neil Sedaka; [3:10] "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen; [3:25] "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga; [3:30] "Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue;[3:36] "Limbo La La" by James Lloyd; [3:40] "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie; [3:57] "Wanna Be Starting Something" by Michael Jackson; [4:04] "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" by Steam
arranged by: VoicePlay
performance date: 1 April 2017
My favorite bits:
Geoff's extensive list of social media accounts before they start singing (and whoever clucks)
Eli getting launched into the air
the audience joining in with Winger before the rest of the guys return to their mics
using the final ♫ "Good-byyyyye" ♫ as their exit line
Trivia:
This medley was one of the earliest videos on their YouTube channel, and a staple of their live shows for many years.
.
youtube
For the final number of the night, the guys were joined on stage by the student groups to create an ocean of sound. (And this videographer was much less shy about capturing it for posterity.)
Details:
title: Don't Stop Believin'
original songs / performers: "Don't Stop Believin'"; [2:36] "Open Arms"; and [2:45] "Any Way You Want It" by Journey; [2:29] "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry
written by: all songs written by Steve Perry in collaboration – "Don't Stop Believin'" with Jonathan Cain & Neal Schon; "Oh Sherrie" with Randy Goodrum, Craig Krampf, & Bill Cuomo; "Open Arms" with Jonathan Cain; "Any Way You Want It" with Neal Schon
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
performance date: 1 April 2017
My favorite bits:
all the kids dancing and connecting with each other
the guys turning around and dropping out during "on and on" to let the chorus shine
Earl's opt-up at the end of ♫ "searching" ♫
the layering of the polyphony section
Trivia:
This song has been part of their catalog since their 4:2:Five days. The earliest concert performance I've found is from a 2009 benefit concert at the University of Rochester.
They finally recorded a video for it when they were the featured artists at Camp A Cappella 2016.
This video was originally posted to Facebook by one of the parents of a student at Neshaminy High School in Langhorne, PA.

Reblogging to explain this design more!
I'm still workshopping their name -- the names Nehar and Orah are sticking out to me right now [both Hebrew words meaning "light" or "shine" -- "nehar" comes from "linhor", to flow or to shine, and "orah" means light -- it's found at the end of the hill Cumorah, fun fact!], but there are so many good name options, especially when looking within the Book of Mormon. Someone who's good at names should help me out with this! I'd love to hear more options, I'm sure there are tons that I'm missing.
Their rain jacket is dark blue. Dark blue is pretty prevalent within the Church [aka it's on the Book of Mormon cover and it's the color of the Gospel Library app. Also BYU colors]; I thought it would be a good color.
Their hair has a gold streak through the middle. Gold is also found pretty liberally throughout our religion -- the Angel Moroni at the top of our temples, and the Gold Plates, to name a few. I thought a gold streak through dark brown hair would be a fun reference.
I put the Christus on their left lapel instead of the other symbol that was there prior [note: what is that? couldn't find any information explaining what that is]. The Christus is the church's new symbol. However, a missionary tag could also be very easily and very fittingly placed there! It's up to y'all and which one you like better.
They are wearing both the Young Women's medallion and the Young Men's ring. Because they embody the Christlike qualities of both men and women or some crap like that.
Instead of the scallop in Luce's eyes, I have chosen to replace it with a badly drawn beehive -- a symbol of Utah, sure, but also a symbol our faith has embraced [remember when Beehives and Mia Maids and Laurels were a thing?]. I thought that, since it also represents Utah, it could be a fitting equivalent to the scallop, which represents pilgrimage [the original pioneers trekked to Utah in a similar fashion]
I switched out Luce's walking stick for a shepherd's crook because I didn't feel like the Catholic walking stick symbolized our faith much. I thought a shepherd's crook would symbolize Christ's role as our Shepherd.
White shirt and boots to reference the whiteness of temples, and our faith's emphasis on striving to be morally clean and someday sinless. The boots are muddy, yes, but they are waterproof and can be washed clean, and over time no trace of the mud will remain -- just like how we can repent and be pure once again.
This anime character doesn't quite represent the average Mormon, nor does it perfectly embody the faith as a whole. But it's a cute anime character, so who the heck cares??
Luce & Friends got hit with my Mormon laser beams

A few things after watching the workshop
• they used the fucking "dum dum"'s from that episode of South Park. I screamed • "I know the Book of Mormon intimately" "you can say that again" • when Arnold picks up Naba bridal style • the entire scene with Kevin and Arnold at the coffee shop • the elder who's tie fell off in "Two by Two" • when Connor taps away after showing Arnold and Kevin their room • "How do his shoes do that?" • "-TO TURN YOU INTO A LESBIAN" (Feel free to add more I'm sure I'm forgetting some great points)
