I want to love my ancestors, but how can I? Parents and grandparents, sure, despite their faults, just because I personally knew/know them, and know they love me - though not without the crushing guilt of knowing most of them don't give a damn about people they or our family have trodden upon, or think something like "well, it wasn't right, but at least we are where we are today because of that, so it all worked out (for us) in the end, didn't it?". Am I supposed to love my family, or hate my family? Are my ancestors worthy? If the solution in my case is to break off from them and try to start over, how do I go about that?

One of the things I really struggle with in my current spiritual journey is a result of the way I spent most of my life expressing belief, mixed with ten years as a fairly hard atheist. The problem is this:

Knowledge.

See, as a Mormon, I expressed my religious beliefs almost exclusively in terms of "Knowing". I did not believe that God existed, I "Knew" it. I did not believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet, I "Knew" He was.

As a Skeptic, atheist, and even now, to know something is a very distinct thing from believing a thing. And so these two definitions of "Know" battle it out in my head.

When I began to have my spiritual awakening my mind pushed against it aggressively.

"You believe Freyja might be reaching out? Do you KNOW it?"

"No, but what do I really know spiritually?"

"Nothing, that's the point. You don't KNOW anything."

This kind of dialogue played through my brain over and over.

Belief and knowledge were still so wrapped up in my head that I did not feel I could even express belief without being able to express it in terms of knowledge.

So. Can a person have Knowledge of deity? And in this instance I mean knowledge in the empirical, quantifiable fashion.

I don't know. I don't think so. However, if there is a way to get a yes answer it will be on a personal level, not in a way that would be applicable across the board.

The thing I have learned recently, partially though my own realization but also in large part due to watching videos by Ocean Keltoi, a wonderful website called SkaldsKeep.com, and by listening to podcasts about paganism and witchcraft, is that this spiritual journey I am on is my own. Paganism is an experiential belief system rather than a dogmatic one. There is no governing body or book to tell me which of the many paths I see before me is the right one. Unlike my entire religious experience thus far, being "Right" is not really the point. Having the "correct" way of believing is not the point. Mormonism and other Christian religions are more focused on the world after death than the here and now. Even when there is discussion of the present and personal progress is undertaken it is done IN ORDER TO make one's fate in the afterlife better.

This is a bit of an aside but I saw a bumper sticker the other day that illustrates the core of Christian thinking when it comes to personal progress and development. The bumper sticker said "A little more like JESUS, a little less like ME."

In Christian thinking, being your best self oftentimes really means being less like yourself and more like Christ. In Mormonism, being told you are a Christlike individual is a huge compliment. God is not really interested in you unless you are conforming to the example that his dead/not dead/sacrificed son set for us. Leave your sexuality, personal desires, expressions, and ways of living behind. Follow Christ. Be Christ.

In contrast, Paganism is a system with innumerable paths and ways of being. Each individual strives to be their best whatever that happens to be. In Mormonism I had to "Come unto Christ". In Paganism the gods meet me half way, or they come into my space.

Be honorable, be true to yourself, be true to your kin. Honor your oaths and obligations. That is a better creed than the one I followed in Mormonism.

But back to belief and knowledge... I do not think I will ever have knowledge of deity. I never have had knowledge of deity, even when I claimed I did. If that knowledge was out there in an empirical and quantifiable fashion, someone would have found it and spread that knowledge around. If this were the case there would not be more than 6000 religions in the world... I mean, unless ALL gods exist.

So if I will never know if my beliefs actually represent reality, what is the point? If the stakes of my beliefs are not eternal, what is the point?

Well, it is possible that spiritual beliefs DO reflect an aspect of reality, certainly MY reality. But like I said earlier, the point is not to be "right" because "right" is different for every person. The point is not to be correct, the point is to be true to yourself and be happy.

I believe there are deities out there. I believe there is a spiritual world. I believe that Nature and the Universe are worthy of reverence. I believe that my personal and growing relationships with the deities I believe are reaching out to me will help to be the very best version of myself that I can be.

My spiritual beliefs, my spiritual journey; though scary and still foggy, brings me happiness. And happiness is the point.

the fireflies had felt like such a natural escape from the bumfuck utah quarantine zone the lims had come from. if it could even have been called that. serena lim had packed up her things one night and just ... walked ... out. there were no sophisitcated defenses keeping people in. and she knew the blindspots, the patrols better than she knew the book of mormon, which she'd only been pretending to read for the last several years of her life. there was no way she could stay at brian head any longer. not even if the ski resort town did protect them from most of the clickers and runners and whatever else the rare traveler they came across described. the infected were so rare up there that most folks hardly even looked out into the night sky on their patrols. she was sure they could've eliminated them entirely if it hadn't provided the less holy of brian head's quarantined with a perfect vignette of debauchery and the plausible deniability they needed to carry it out. 

it had just been so easy to leave.

life was a hell of a lot harder out there than serena had bargained for. she'd been looking for the fireflies, sure, lured into the light by the fairy tales of doing something more. she could be a knight of the round table. she could be a spark. but it hadn't been serena who'd found the fireflies at all. she had been the one who'd been found. not as a knight of camelot, but a damn damsel in distress and she'd nearly paid for it too. thankfully marlene had taken a liking to her and she'd made her way through the country taking out fedra and learning how to be a weapon if not a knight. 

the problem with weapons was that they were at the mercy of whoever wielded them. after whatever went down at the hospital that killed marlene went down, it was like the core of them had decayed. things fell apart, as they did, and serena was just a weapon. a sword without a hand. a firefly without a light. without a cause or a leader, all she could bring herself to do was survive and nothing more. she avoided populated areas, figured she had fuck all she could do against fedra as an island unto herself, and kept moving. her most recent domicile an old museum she'd cleared out awhile back--if you could call it that. the rinky-dink roadside kansas museum held a fair few old artifacts and photos that were xeroxed sometimes before most of the old world stuff she saw and it was roughly the size of a mobile home.

kansas was flat and the museum was small; it made it easy enough to defend. though, in her stagnant lonesomeness, she was getting careless just like her kin back at old brian's head. she'd spent most of the night sound asleep, only waking to the sound of broken glass, too late to find herself good cover (she hadn't really needed any). so she stood, dumbfounded under the haze of sleep and hoarse with the disuse of her own voice. a cocked gun was universel in any language and spoke loud enough for her as she cleared her throat, waiting to see what waited for her in the darkness while her eyes adjusted.
