I never touched it but I feel like i only ever hear positive things said about song of achilles.. in (rough strokes at least) what makes it dogshit to you?
Okay it's been a while since I actually read it so some of this might not be spot on accurate. Sorry if at any point I say 'the book never does xyz' and it actually does once or twice but I think my underlying criticisms are accurate
-Patroclus is made into like this soft gentle tender quivering little yaoi boy. In the source text, he's shown as compassionate and moved by the suffering of his own men (and apparently having some medical skill, tending to the wounded in the camp), but very much invested n combat and very, very good at it (pages worth of descriptions of the guys he's killing left and right). In this, the arguably more complex character from this 8th century BC text is flattened into Being A Healer, he doesn't want to go to war he just wants to help people, he only goes because Achilles has to but he doesn't want to fight he's a HEALER he's a gentle lover NOT A FIGHTER who just wants to help he just wants to help everyone around him he HEALS while Achilles is a doomed warrior who is so good at fighting and KILLING its a DICHOTOMY GUYS!!!LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL SUN AND MOON DOOMED LOVERS SO SAD patocluse HEALER . (I Think he's specifically characterized as being BAD at fighting but might be misremembering)
-I don't remember much about Achilles' characterization I think it just makes him less of a jackass while not adding anything of interest and levels out into being mad boring.
-Not getting into the literal millenias old debate whether the mythological characters Achilles and Patroclus were being characterized as some type of lover by the original oral sources of the Iliad or its Homeric writers. We will never know. We don't even know what (if any) culturally accepted conventions of male homosexuality existed in bronze age Greece (we know much more about their descendants). But there are some interesting elements of their characterization in this direction, with how unconventional their relationship is WITHIN the text itself- Patroclus is described as cooking for Achilles and his guests (very specifically a woman/wife's job), Achilles chides Patroclus like a father, but there's also scene where Achilles' mourning of him directly echoes a passage of Hector's wife mourning her husband, Patroclus is explicitly stated to Achilles' elder, and is overall treated as his equal or near-equal, closest confidant and most beloved friend (to the point that pederastic classical Greeks would debate over who was erastes (older authority figure lover) and who was eromenos (adolescent 'beloved')- many took it as a given that this text depicted their present-day cultural norms of homosexual behavior but it existed so Outside of these norms that it had to be debated who was who). Their relationship is non-standard both within the text and to the descendants of the civilization that wrote them.
Basically what I'm saying is this book had opportunities to like, explore the unconventionality of the relationship (being presented here as explicitly lovers), explore the dynamics of why Patroclus wants to do 'women's work' (besides being a tenderhearted softboy), the weird dynamics where they take on paternal roles to each other but also roles of wives, how they feel about being this way, and just kind of Doesn't. Which I guess isn't an intrinsic fault (because it omits much of what I just talked about to begin with). it's just like.... Lame. This book takes jsut abandons everything interesting about the source text in favor of flattening it into bland Doomed Yaoi.
-The conflict that sets off the core story of the Iliad is Achilles and Agamemnon fighting over Briseis, an enslaved Trojan woman taken by Achilles as a war-trophy, Achilles spends most of the story moping because he was dishonored by his 'trophy' being taken. Achilles and Patroclus and everyone else are raping their captives, all the women in the story are either captured Trojans (or in the case of the free women within the walls of Troy, soon to be enslaved, and are slave owners themselves). Slavery as an institution and extreme patriarchal conventions are innate to the text and reflective of the context in which it was developed. You cannot avoid it.
But obviously you can't have your soft yaoi boys doing this, so the author has them capturing women to Protect Them from the other men. Their slaves are UNDER THEIR PROTECTION and VERY SAFE (and they might even Like And Befriend Them but I might be misremembering that. Briseis does though). Our heroes have apparently absorbed none of the ideals of the culture they exist in and the author seems to think "they're gay and aren't sexually attracted to their captives" would translate to them being outright benevolent (also as if wartime sexual violence is just about attraction and not part of a wider spectrum of violent acts to dehumanize and brutalize an accepted 'enemy')
In the source text, Briseis mourns Patroclus as being the kindest to her of her captors, who tried to get her a slightly better outcome by getting her married to Achilles (which probably would be the Least Bad of all possible outcomes for a woman in that situation, becoming a legal wife instead of a slave), and wonders what will happen to her now that he's gone. This is a really really sad, horrible, and compelling dynamic which could be fleshed out in very interesting ways but is instead is tossed entirely aside in favor of them being Besties. Like brother and sister.
All of the above pisses me off so much. If you don't want to engage in the icky parts of ancient/bronze age Greece then don't write a retelling of a story taking place in bronze age Greece. I'm not gonna get mad at children's adaptations of Greek myths or silly fun stories loosely based on them for omitting the rape and slavery but it is SO fundamental to the Iliad. If you're not willing to handle it, either fully omit it or better yet set your Iliad inspired yaoi in an invented swords-and-sandals setting where you can have all your heartbreaking tragic doomed lovers plot beats and not have to clumsily write around the women they're brutalizing.
-The author didn't seem to know what to do with Thetis and she made her just like, Achilles bitch mother who spends most of the story trying to separate our Yaoi Boys (iirc her disguising Achilles as a girl and hiding him on Scyros is made to be more about getting him away from Patroclus than trying to save her son from his prophesied doom in the Trojan War) until she sees how much they loooove each other and I think helps Patroclus' spirit get to the afterlife or something in the end?
-This is more of a personal taste gripe but it has that writing style I loathe where the prose feels less like a story and more like an attempt to string together Deep Beautiful Hard Hitting Poetic Lines that will look great as excerpts on booktok (might predate booktok but same vibe). It's all very Pretty and Haunting and Deep but feels devoid of real substance.
I really like The Iliad and The Odyssey in of themselves. They're fascinating historical texts that give a window into how 8th century BC Greeks told their stories, saw their world, interpreted their ancestors, etc. And genuinely I think these texts have 'good' characters, there's a lot of complexity and humanity to it.
WRT the Iliad- all of the main Achaeans are pretty fascinating, the one singular part where Briseis Gets To Talk and laments her situation is great, Achilles fantasizing that all of the Trojans AND the Achaeans die so he and Patroclus alone can have the glory of conquering Troy (wild), Achilles asking to embrace Patroclus' shade and reaching out for him but it's immaterial (and the shade being sucked back underground with a 'squeak' (the squeak kinda gets me it's disturbing and sad)), Hecuba talking about wanting to tear out Achilles' liver and eat it in a (taboo, exceptioally pointed) expression of rage and grief for his mutilation of her son's corpse, just one tiny line where the enslaved women performing ritual wailing for their dead captors are described as using it as an outlet to 'grieve for their own troubles' is heartrending, etc. A lot of grappling with anger and grief and the inevitability of death, a lot of groundwork laid for characters that could be very interesting when expanded upon in the framework of a conventional novel.
And Song Of Achilles really doesn't do much with all that. I know a lot of my gripes here are kind of just "It's different from the Iliad", I would have thought of it as mostly mediocre and forgettable rather than infuriating if it wasn't a retelling (and I DEFINITELY have strong biases here). But I think the ways in which it is different are less just a product of a retelling (of course there's going to be omissions and differences) and more a complete and utter disinterest in vast majority of its own subject matter, to the book's detriment. I think a retelling has a point when it EXPANDS on the source, or provides a NEW ANGLE to the source. This book doesn't Really do either, it just shaves off the complexity of its source material, renders the characters into a really boring archetype of a gay relationship, and gives very little else. Its content boils down to a middling tragic romance that has been inserted into the hollowed out defleshed skeleton of the Iliad.
Bottom line: I definitely would not be as mad about it if I wasn't familiar with the source material but I think it's fair to expect a retelling to Engage with/expand on its source, and I also think it's weak purely on its own merits. This book was set up to disappoint Me specifically.
#Sorry this turned into a 100000 word essay on The Iliad it can't be helped#I read Circe by the same author and thought it was like.. better? Definitely not great just less aggravating and kind of boring#Just rote 'you heard about this villainous woman from a Greek myth... Here's the REAL story' shit#It did have a few things I thought were good I remember it starting kind of strong and then just going limp for the remaining duration#I think part of it is that in that case she's expanding on a figure that Didn't have a whole lot of characterization in the source so#like. She had to actually Expand The Character#Again Silence of the Girls is the only Greek Mythology Retelling I have like....positive?.leaning positive? feelings towards#I've got BIG issues with it too but it does pretty much the exact opposite of everything I'm mad at SOA for and in some very#compelling ways (it's just that the author seems way more interested in Achilles and Patroclus than The Main Character Briseis#to the point of randomly starting to have Achilles POV interjections (which I thought were Good in of themselves but#really really really really really really really didn't need to be there) and then get kind of lampshaded by Briseis narrating 'I guess I#was trapped in Achilles' story the whole time lol!!!!!!')#It undermines the book on both a thematic level and just like. a construction level like it's real sloppy at times.#Also the Briseis POV sometimes has these like really out of place Author Mouthpiece Moments where she's very obviously#Stating The Point to the audience and it's like yeah we get it. We get it.#Wow in the scene were our mostly silent enslaved protagonist removes the gag from the mouth of a dead sacrificed girl as a#small but significant act of defiance and grieving in a book called 'Silence of the Girls' you inserted an ironic repeat of the line#'silence befits a woman'. in italics even. Thanks for that. I could not possibly have grasped the meaning of this scene if you didn't#spell it out for me like that. Thank you.#Actually hang on the only Greek mythology retelling I have unequivocally positive feelings for are the 'Minotaur Forgiving'#songs on 'This One's For The Dancer And This One's For The Dancer's Bouquet'. Fully love it. Like not just as songs I think it#does function well as a narrative and engages with and expands on the source in really beautiful and creative ways

If you became super rich and could design your own house, but could only add THREE unnecessary/random/expensive home additions (like how people will have bowling alleys, movie theatres, closets with museums of shoes, car display rooms, spa rooms, wine cellars, etc. in their mansions) - what three would you choose?
#I think I would have: an indoor pool (but like heavily customized with a faux weather system so I could get the feeling of swimming in#rain or fog or snow etc.). a very small arcade consisting only of skee-ball and DDR machines. and an old Library Room with authentic#historical furniture/interior design to store old books/tapestries/study room equipment/whatever other antiques I'd collect. It'd be#like some fully intricate movie set or something that would feel completely like stepping into another world/time.#Though I might would trade out the arcade for a roller skating rink.. i DO love skating....#And I wouldve put rock climbing gym because I love indoor rock climbing but.. as I understand it they have to change out the rock things#on the walls every once in a while so that you can have new routes and it doesnt get boring. and I'd rather have an activty room thats like#self sustaining and doesnt require me to hire some person to come switch things around once every month. Otherwise I would#totally do that instead.#I'm also personally not counting ''craft'' type stuff like having a pottery room kiln sort of thing because#that doesn't count as 'unnessecary' to me. since stuff like that would not at all be just a hobby I 'happen to#do sometimes for fun'#but would definitely be a career sort of thing. Like if I had the money for a fully stocked sculpture room and and a sewing room#with a good machine and etc. then I would literally be professionally selling pottery and designing clothing and etc.#so I wouldn't count it as 'just a random side room I dont need' etc.#The same way that if I played tennis professionally or as a very intense hobby that takes up most of my life/time#then I wouldn't count having a tennis court in your house to practice in as 'unncesscarry' etc.#wow that is the worst I have ever spelt that word ghbjh#Un Cess Carry#ALSO would obviously have an underground bunker of some sort with food and emergency supplies which also does not count as unnecessary to m#since it's literally like... survival.. And I thought most health organizations literally reccomend that even#the common person has a small 'go bag' prepared in their house. and like an evacuation plan in case of fire or other things#It WOULD be an unnecessary rich person thing to have a full on undergRound village or something stocked with 9000 guns and#whaetever. but I think just a basic emergency room with basic supplies could still be counted under the 'not unnecessary' requirement.#Like I would say that a sprawling courtyard of flower gardens and fountains and hedge mazes that takes up like a hundred thousand#dollars a year in maintenance would count as one of the three 'unnecessary and expensive' things. But having a small garden in the#back yard with a few planters in a little greenhouse or whatever would not. The 'excessiveness' of the thing matters lol#ANYWAY!!!#Just curious what other peoples Three Main things would be... hrrmm

the most autistic thing i've done in the past year is when i typed out a transcript of the text from the entire main storyline in Pokemon Legends: Arceus into a wordpad document, complete with basic image descriptions, and then i didn't even write the fanfic which was supposedly the reason i started that whole project in the first place
#pokemon legends arceus#pla#pokemon#aphelion.txt#actuallyautistic#actually autistic#67k words. if you were wondering#i didn't replay it myself but rather watched someone's playthrough on youtube and paused each time to copy out the text#i was able to find raw text dumps of the game on the internet but they were all out of order so i decided to make my own transcript#to base the plot of my fanfic off of but then i only ever wrote 1 chapter of the fanfic#probably i should upload the transcript to gamefaqs or something in case any other person in the world might potentially want it#actually this is a time-honored tradition for me#for some reason around the time period of 2nd-4th grade#i would do similar things when i got really bored#like copying out a couple of chapters of my favorite book into one of my notebooks by hand#actually this wasnt even the first time i tried to transcribe a pokemon game#i vividly remember attempting to do the same to pokemon pearl and pokemon ranger when i was like 9#didn't get very far on those tho#Still not sure why i enjoy(ed) doing this. but. it's soothing ?#might have to redo my resume from scratch btw :/// im not finding it in any of the places where i usually keep documents#the search for it being the reason why. i stumbled on the pla transcript which i managed to forget existed. and made this post

I'm 50% into My year of rest and relaxation and the question is: when does this book get provoking/disturbing/interesting/the vehicle of at least a single original or inspired aesthetic effect
#i suppose this author gets more disturbing in her later books? but is there anything about /this/ book that is at all beyond commonplace?#beside the insipid execution -- everything about body image falls short of convincing me it is intended as irony and instead paints an#uncomfortably persistent image of the author as a truly pathetic person -- not a feeling i enjoy at all in any media form#normally a boring book can't affect me -- in this case i'm having such a hard time connecting this author's fame with the actual work#like prose-wise structure-wise image-wise there is nothing here that i can see... A matter of taste for sure. Truly I can't reach it#dr tuttle the only character in this book worth anything to my reader experience. save me dr tuttle#inane post#reading

oh yeah. the reason why i decided to reread tbhk (and thus it was able to hit me like a truck this time around) was actually not bc of mitsukou going canon but actually bc i maybe accidentally started a tbhk book club w my kids at work and wanted to check the contents of it justttt in case before i put the books in their hands
#tl;dr i have this one 4th grade boy who's a total weeb and knows that i'm the only one in this town who's more into japanese media than him#so he pesters me abt it every time he sees me. and the thing abt this kid is that he gets bored easily and if he does he turns into a#complete menace. now a couple weeks ago. he shows up at the program w one piece volume one and spends the entire time he's there peacefully#reading and not causing any problems on purpose. my coworker owen (the one who climbed onto the roof) and i were shocked and in awe of how#peaceful he was being and came to the conclusion that he NEEDS to have a manga volume in his hands at all times. few minutes later.#he finishes reading and isn't bored yet so he decides to go talk to me abt manga. specifically he starts pestering me abt what shonen i've#read despite the fact that i am a shoujo reader and told him that. but he knows i've read kuroshitsuji bc he previously asked me abt what#the worst anime i've ever watched is and i will never not take an excuse to drag the adaptation. and he figures that if i've read kuro i've#probably read more. and so i mention tbhk and he asks more abt it bc of the name involving toilets and him being a 4th grade boy so i give#brief overview and he wants to read it. and i come up with a scheme to make him peaceful AND to give him something to talk to me abt which#isn't 'i know you've read more shonen manga' 'let me gacha on your phone' or 'i saw an ad for rent a gf. thought it was lame. and now want#you to tell me how it sucks bc i assume you know everything abt every animanga ever' (<does unfortunately know too much abt rent a gf bc i'#a bit of a nosy bastard and watched the mother's basement video). so i offered to bring it in bc i own physicals of the whole series and of#as previously mentioned. gave it a quick reread in advance just in case. and got hit by it. hard. i love you tbhk almost as much as i love#when ppl get into things through me. honestly i think getting to live vicariously through him might be one of the main reasons it got me#this time around and not as much the first time (still loved it the first time though). flash forward a little while. one of the 3rd grade#girls is like. really into reading. and also macabre things. like ghosts. and she has two books from the school library. and has had the#same two books from the school library for over a week. she reads quickly and finished them both in under a day and is now bored out of her#mind rereading them. she asks to read the books i've been letting the other kid read. now there are two of them#romeo.txt

“The Great Gatsby was so boring why did anyone even like it” THE PROSE!!!! YOU HAVE TO SAVOR IT FOR THE PROSE. IT’S THE PROSE
#yeah nothing fucking happens until the end but you should feel like you’re getting punched in the face by word choice like three times a pg#it’s the journey not the destination!!!#sorry I saw someone call TGG boring earlier today and the last post inspired me to say something#that book rearranged my molecules the first time I read it and it’s the number 1 ‘high school English class book’ that I see people complain#about#usually saying that it was boring or confusing#which I simply cannot understand. like number one it’s so SHORT how did you even have TIME to get bored or confused??#i think that mmmmaybe it might be a case of like#some readers get bored if ‘nothing happens’ while other readers get bored if like#events aren’t presented in a way they find interesting#like a lot of people like Dracula because it’s jam-packed with action!!!#but I find the way Stoker writes to be so DEADLY boring that I fucking hated having to read that book for school#meanwhile The Great Gatsby is a lot of Nick sitting around in different rooms but Fitzy boy is a masterful writer so to me it’s a real#page turner

i finished the merry wives of windsor today btw. 4 shakespeare plays left to go
#tales from diana#i'm in a pickle bc i've been burning through the remainders in the last year or so in a way that makes me... melancholic#i didnt hate merry wives even though i wasn't looking forward to it for a very long time bc i knew it was mostly prose#im neither a big falstaff fan (im sorry) not do i get the most charm from shakespeare from his prose#but admittedly it was still rather enjoyable as a comedy. you dont get a lot of fake cuckoldry plots from shakespeare specifically#not in comedy certainly! so i enjoyed the trickery of it#not the worst shakespeare play as far as pure entertainment value at all. nothing's as boring as henry viii#that one was a big disappointment#i have one play in each category left (counting the romances as their own category) (and counting kinsmen as his work)#coriolanus. king john. measure for measure actually! and two noble kinsmen#i know a lot about measure for measure already i just have never read it in full. twelfth night was like that as a reading experience too#i wasn't in a rush to get to it but in the case of measure. i wanted to get merry wives out of the way first#and leave my last pure comedy to be something i would almost certainly enjoy more#now im kind of in a pickle bc i feel the ecstasy of being tempted to just finish the complete plays already#but i also wanna pace myself and read other things#i kinda have this idea of what if i saved the last 4 to read in 2025? but we're not even halfway through 2024#i dont have that kinda patience#maybe ill reread some old favorites in the meantime or something. idk#i dont think i mentioned it on here but i got the rsc complete works second edition from 2022#last month! bc my riverside is in delicate condition. but i switched back between the two when reading merry wives#i just couldnt help it. i miss my mother. it's always going to be the most personally comfortable book for me to read from#i read the majority of these plays in that volume. that book TAUGHT ME to read shakespeare#but i need to be strong and i also enjoy comparative literary studies and a more recent book has a lot to offer#im yammering on to myself incoherently im sure nobody really cares what im saying. even i dont! ok goodbye goodnight

about a third of the way through baru now but it's such slow going because the pacing is so... like things will happen in spurts, and then time will be skipped over without much description of what's happened in the meantime, then the new status quo will be in place but only illustrated in broad strokes - and when there are *scenes* instead of *passages* the scenes are mostly people expositing economics or politics to each other while thinking 'he knows that i know that he knows that i know...but we've both played our pieces already so it doesn't matter who knows...' so it winds up reading like a very slow chess game where the moves are telegraphed far enough in advance that you're not sure where, if anywhere, the genius move is
#it's hard to know if i like this book or not#i like the characters#i like the concept#i even like the plot#it's just the way it's all put together that makes it kind of boring#everybody knows what everybody else is doing so how is it possible that there's still supposedly intrigue everywhere?#unless there's a whole nother later underneath it .b ut if THAT's the case. then we're not getting enough glimpses at it#and now i realize i'm talking it through ad nauseum like the characters in this book#baru cormorant

I keep loads of basic supplies in my car because there are so many homeless people in my city. I'm leaving the gym, and this dude stops and asks for a light. While I'm handing him my lighter, he asks if I have any water. I say I only have Gatorade right now, and move to my trunk and tell him he's welcome to anything he needs back there. He picks up some soap, sniffs it, and says, "This is all garbage. Nobody wants this," and left. And, like, I'm not sure if I need to rethink what I'm stocking my car with or if he was just an asshole.
#for the record i have shampoo. conditioner. body soap. deodorant. toothbrushes and toothpaste. hothands. dental floss. tampons. blankets.#and a bunch of snacks that have a long shelf life (granola bars. bagged nuts. stuff high in fat or protein) and Gatorade#oh and little backpack things in case someone needs something to carry shit in#like. i know the hothands and blankets are seasonal. but it's still cold.#and the rest is stuff that makes life a little less shit.#i also have travel ibuprofen packs. i forgot about that one.#but like. none of it seems usless.#it's not like I'm out here handing out 'money' that's actually a pamphlet on why jesus is cool#so I'm thinking he was just having a particularly shit day#if i could afford it I'd just give people $50 or whatever and it's not my business where that's used#but i can barely pay my rent right now so i gotta be cheaper so I don't also end up homeless#i do want to get sunscreen and rain jackets now that we're moving into spring. but money is tight...#i also thought about adding in books because it has to be boring doing fuck all all day and maybe that could be enjoyable?#i really don't know#but I'm apparently not doing it right so i need to improve somehow#not even being sarcastic about that. if I'm not doing good i need to know where I'm fucking up

Ooh, first Pratchett? "The Wee Free Men" is great, but have you considered "Monstrous Regiment"? It's got more gender.
Ooh love a book with a lot of gender!! That probably goes without saying based on the entirety of my blog. It IS my first pratchett and my rationale was: this is the one at my aunt's house. But I'll be on the lookout for monstrous regiment next time I visit the library in person (for some reason the pratchett selection for ebooks & audiobooks through my libraries isn't great)
#replies#to this i know some of you are thinking why don't they simply cough acquire these books through alternate means#the answer is boring. i can't be fucked to go through all the hoops#plus i like to support the libraries in my area whenever possible by checking out lots of books#helps them make the case for their services/for getting a better selection of sff

#getting a new case scary... my current one is piterally like. well ill be honest i think it is more like shrapnel than a phone case#its like. a soft part and a hard part and well. the soft parts that arent under hard parts have been entirely torn off#so the entire bottom of my phone is sxposed as is the top half on both sides#and the hard part is also broken all alone the bottom And i lost a corner the other day#so yeah.#i should prolly get a new one.. ill probably just get another boring one bc i get scared if ppl know things abt me#vut also maybe i should get like a nice one so i can like. idk its a conversation starter....#like if im at the library and somebody sees my phone case and its like idk van gogh or something they could be like I love van gogh and i#could be like Omg thats awesome hes one of my all time favorite painters .... hes also very interesting as a person and his letters with#his brother etc etc etc and the person would be like Wow this guy is so interesting and knows a lot about van gogh I should become friends#with them and introduce them to my friend group and we will all be friends.#<- thats basically what might happen. but also what if theres somebody who Would have talked to me#and then they see my theoretical van gogh phone case and theyre like Ugh i hate van gogh. fuck this guy...#not that id rly wanna be friends with that person anyway but like. yk. van gogh is a theoretical example#what if it was more of like a fandom thing or something Which id literally never get but theoretically. and theyre like ew this guy likes#... idk. outer wilds. and this imaginary person ive created thinks iuter wilds is rly problematic so they tell everybody else in the#library Hey this guys a freak and a weirdo and everybodys like wow this guys a freak and a weirdo and they throw books at me and then i#cant ever go to the library ever again. i know thats unrealistic but a lot of thjngs i never thought would happen to me have happened to me#recently so. i wouldnt even be surprised at this point its like im a little kitten in a wet cardboard box all alone and somebody poured#gasoline on me. and i was like Oh what the hell why did that person pour gasoline on me... and rhen im like Its ok i can deal with the#gasoline. ajd then as soon as im recovered ANOTHER person pours gasoline on me and im like dude why this. what the hell.#but km like Weird it happened twice.. but its ok and fhen ANOTHER THING OF GASOLINE and im like WHYY and b4 i even get s chance to recover#skmehody throws a match in. and its like man what the hell did i do. thats basically whats happening with me Nd god rn. he just keeps#pouring gasoline on me and brother its getting a bit tiring.

The hardest part about packing for me is deciding what books I'm going to take
#personal#i'm on vacation for the next week (thank fuck!)#usually i bring whatever i happen to be reading and then like... two other books in case i get bored of one or the other#but i never know what genre i'll be in the mood for#so it's like packing 'what if i want fantasy' 'what if i want a classic' 'what if i want my fav books'#thanks adhd!

What an awful curse to be a person who theoretically loves maximalism but hates seeing stuff that has been stored outside cupboards, hates dusting, is terrified of somehow decorating The Wrong Way and being laughed at, is extremely clumsy, and has no real motivation to purchase nicknacks
#I know we often talk about the opposite problem (chaotic maximalists) but I'd say with the exception of books I'm a reluctant minimalist#Oh the life I could have if I weren't an absolute mess and therefore react badly to having more than four objects in a room to take care of#I just look at other people's pictures of cluttered cosy rooms and sigh#I love it in other people's homes and spaces but the minute I try to be decorative in my own I shrink back like a snail#I will sit comfortably in my very boring white empty walls and perish for lack of imagination and colour#But it's stressful if there are small things to get broken or need dusted all the time#And I like clear spaces#My brother keeps coming in like 'Oh your house isn't so bad you could just decorate a bit more'#I want to#But I also believe that will spell disaster and possibly some stubbed toes#I see cool little ornaments and pictures and stuff and think 'Oh yeah maybe some other time though'#And end up living in what I would in any other case describe as bland white wall grey carpet hell#I have become the Man#I feel so horrid and vanilla and BORING#What is the POINT of being an annoying opinionated aggressively passionate about niche things little horror#If that doesn't at least translate einto some interesting decor#Turns out I'm a big old suburban coward#It's so sterile in here#Earth & Stone
