PLEASE for the love of the universe read anti-colonial science fiction and fantasy written from marginalized perspectives. Y’all (you know who you are) are killing me. To see people praise books about empire written exclusively by white women and then turn around and say you don’t know who Octavia Butler is or that you haven’t read any NK Jemisin or that Babel was too heavy-handed just kills me! I’m not saying you HAVE to enjoy specific books but there is such an obvious pattern here

i've mentioned him before but whatever. have some more details. so this blonde guy (not a main character, he's actually a villain but also ambiguously a love interest(?)) did these things (and more):

tried to colonize the entire world and pillaged countless villages and cities and ruined an untold amount of people's lives

was responsible for countless people's deaths including one of the main character's parents

manipulated a second main character's parent into joining his cause

befriended a third main character (he's stated to be in love with her) and manipulated her the entire time he was actively fighting her (at one point he hugs her. in the middle of a battle. of which they are on opposite sides.) he acts so kind and gentle and sweet to her the entire time but it's all an act!!! he's actually a conniving little shit!!! he's not sweet he's shitty!!!

used his own sister's death to manipulate the third and first main characters into thinking he was on their side and then had the audacity to blame his tutor for his sister's death and try to kill her for it, when he benefited from it

instigated the murder of his own father so he could usurp the throne

manipulated yet another character (not a main one, though) into helping him when he was responsible for said character's village being destroyed

was willing to let his own soldiers die while he retreated because he's a fucking coward and a shitty leader that doesn't care about them

i'm trying to think of something bad he did to the fourth main character in particular but i can't really think of one. oh, well

there's more but it would involve delving into the lore of the series and i'm not in the mood to explain the complicated worldbuilding stuff

i love him so much. he's soooooo problematic and shitty and manipulative and toxic and oooooogh i'm studying him under a microscope. he deserves to be punched in the face (the fourth main character should've been allowed to punch him in the face)

well, actually. actually, you see. well, you see. uh. well. i actually love morally messed up love interests, as long as the narrative acknowledges how fucked up they are *trying so hard to be normal about kaz brekker and cardan greenbriar right now*

Tips for Engaging in Fandom

Here are my tips for engaging with fandom in a productive and healthy way, from someone who has been in the KotLC fandom for seven years.

When engaging with other posts:

Block liberally. I block all confession/anonymous opinion blogs, as well as haters of my favorite characters and ships (and people who hate a lot in general).

Unfollow liberally, too. You can even break the mutual! Nothing is stopping you! I've stayed friends with people after unfollowing them, even.

Don't like, don't read. If something is upsetting you, move on. Don't feed it.

Filter tags you don't want to see. You can do this in Tumblr settings, and posts with those tags will be hidden on your dashboard. I mention a few below that might be a good place to start.

When posting yourself and interacting with other people:

Tag your discourse and negativity. That way, other people can filter it out. The main tag is #kotlc discourse, but some other used formats are #anti [X], #[X] neg, and #[X] hate. For example, #anti alina.

Take a break before replying or posting. It's not going to go well if you respond when you're upset.

When in doubt, ask. Ask if you understand correctly what their post meant. Ask if they like to debate or would rather not. Ask if they're okay with joking insults. Ask if they'll use a tag for you.

A kind person will generally appreciate a respectful question, and if they're not kind, it's probably best to block them.

Ultimately, remember you can't control other people. You can make requests of them, but it's up to you to use these methods to get rid of things you don't want to see.
