So! Below are several links to programs and foundations that promote adult literacy! Hundreds of millions of adults world wide were failed by their education system and now must fend for themselves while trying to read contracts and hospital bills and infographics from the CDC. But they don't have to be alone, and it is never too late to learn!

ProLiteracy: A network of educators, researchers, and advocates which provides research reports, learning materials, and other support to adult education programs. They assist with connecting volunteers to local programs and provide guidance and support to community leaders trying to use their programs' findings to advocate for social and political change.

Adult Literacy League: An adult education program in Central Florida, which aims to provide students with one on one attention to foster growth and confidence. It also offers English Second Language courses and job skills training, and each new student receives a comprehensive assessment to determine the best plan for them.

Saint Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center's Foundational Skills Program: A 100% free adult education program aimed at adults reading below a fifth grade level. It operates year round and is either in person or remote, and they now have a GED testing center that is open to students and the public alike.

Washtenaw Literacy: A free network of trained tutors for adults in Washtenaw County, Michigan.

Adult Learning Program (Las Vegas/Clark County): Free education classes to those lacking a high school diploma, those seeking to learn ESL, and adults who read below an eighth grade level. Also assists in students' search for gainful employment. Nevada got so fucked by COVID and the education/literacy numbers in the South West are grim. Please help these guys.

Hawaii Literacy: In addition to helping adult residents of Hawaii Island learn to read and write AND bridging the education gap in Hawaii's underserved children, they offer computer literacy classes, ESL classes, and a bookmobile. 1 in 6 Hawaiian adults struggle to read and write.

Tbh the whole 'bloodclan bans families and hates Cat God' thing really reminds me of the anti communist bullshit I was fed in highschool history class.

Every day I count my lucky stars that I got educated in a well-funded school in a blue state. My teachers were shockingly good in hindsight, I didn't get half of the same propaganda some of my friends in other states got.

#One of the coolest things that we did in my high school history class was #My teacher actually taught us the dawn of the soviet union and the rise of stalinism #AND THEN pulled out a book they had to read in their college course!#Which taught the SAME story from the other side. Exactly as a teenager in the soviet union would learn the story #It blew my third eye RIGHT open #And I think it became downright formative because I've never been able to look at the concept of history lessons the same way #Both the American story and the Soviet story framed their home nations as the righteous entity #And I guess the narrative concept of 'framing' had never felt SO REAL before #Same events just described differently... how much can change from wording #And later that year when I learned about the american whiskey rebellion I thought of a farmer uprising in the soviet union #Yknow. Thinking about it. I wonder if this at all contributed to why I made the Educator role...#Tomorrow's history is today's politics lads. Don't forget that.#And they will laminate the shit and the mud along with the truth.#Bone babble

Hey y'all! I am considering trying listening to podfics, but I have no idea where to start. Like, I read a lot of fanfic, but idk how one goes about listening to them? Is it like an app, or a download it kind of thing, or what? Do you have any advice or specific recommendations? In the past I have really, really struggled with books on tape because I cannot focus on just listening, but I like listening to like sort of documentary-ish videos while sewing and that's just a person talking, so probably I would be able to focus on audiobooks or podfics now?

#the person behind the yarn #I have nothing against audiobooks or podfics I think they are excellent!#It's great to have options and everybody has different accessibility requirements and preferences #I think part of my strong dislike for listening to them myself though came from my oldest sibling's high school reading #they did not like reading the assigned books so our mom got it on tape and it meant the only thing playing in the car #for like WEEKS was The Old Man and the Sea #but I was not in the car every time they were! So I couldn't follow the story! and I hated only getting bits of it #and then the next audiobook was on a road trip and it was...one of the robinson books I think #swiss family robinson or robinson carusoe? one of the stranded on an island classics #but the environment of the island made absolutely no sense #and the animals they described as native to the island could not reasonably exist in the same environment #and when I (age like 11 or 12 maybe) expressed that everyone else in the car thought it was funny #but I was genuinely very upset about the book's unrealistic depiction of animals lol #anyway none of that is relevant here I just want to try listening to stories again

okay like. i haven’t read a lot. crippling undiagnosed adhd and probably memory issues have kept me from consuming books since like elementary school. i probably finished one assigned novel in high school and i finally finished a whole novel for fun last year. i’m churning through moby dick slowly atm, but as a decent editor and writer and hence someone associated with the writing community and seeing those booktok recs or whatever…

girl tell me why the first book i open. starts with a fucking. spotify playlist. like, i was Aware that these books were wattpad-level. but i didnt think it was THAT wattpad holy shit

#and i dont tend to judge music taste either #but let’s just say im looking at half of these artists on this playlist. and i can already Tell #also for context since i know people can bitch #it’s not that i DIDNT read during that time #i tried so fuckin hard to read. it’s just i would power thru a chunk. then have to put it down. and then by the time id be able to pick it #up again. i’d have forgotten everything and would have to start over again. eg i restarted the chopin bibliography i have like 3 times #i read quite a few short stories tho #the one book in high school was the wars btw. fuck i cant remember the author. timothy smth. but it was very good #anyways. just had to rant bc i wanna see Just How Bad It Is since i technically Am kinda working in a writing-community-adjacent thing #and need to see for myself. how bad this is. i just cant get past the spotify playlist im gonna cry #a while back i tried kinda reading bits of love hypothesis and god.
