“‘He’s been hit…He’s been hit…’ Hiccup heard a shaking Fishlegs say as he helped Hiccup down from the Deadly Shadow’s back, and because Hiccup was nearly fainting it sounded like Fishlegs was talking from a long distance away.”

Re: HBAU
I don't remember if you've said much re: Elder and Little Fish's relationship, if they have any. So if there is a relationship dynamic there, what's it like?
Little Fishlegs is probably the ONLY person in the entire tribe to think Hiccup the Elder was cool from the very beginning 😂
Elder has the same dark sense of humor as him, is lethally sarcastic, and was also an outcast from his peers for a long time, so Little Fish sees him as sort of a role model. WAY more so than Minicup, who finds this preposterous and heartily criticizes his standards 😂😂 but he'll come around eventually!
Elder has a soft spot for Little Fish, too. He fixes Fish's glasses when they get screwed up by the other Pirates and he'll give him and Minicup advice on how to make bullies leave them alone. He considers Fish an extension of the family to some degree, and therefore considers him his responsibility, alongside Minicup. If you've seen the shows, you know this guy is a bit of a mother hen!
Minicup and Elder butted heads a lot all growing up, and don't have a truly close relationship until they start training dragons together. But Little Fish and Elder have always been on good terms!

first book doodles bc i laughed at these moments
"DEATH OR GLORY!" yelled Gobber.
"DEATH OR GLORY!" yelled eight boys back at him fanatically.
Death, thought Hiccup and Fishlegs, sadly.
"HEROES OR EXILE!" yelled Gobber the Belch.
"HEROES OR EXILE!" yelled eight boys fanatically back at him.
Exile, thought Hiccup and Fishlegs sadly.

As a kid, I appreciated the lack of romance between the kids in the HTTYD books. Now that I am an adult, I enjoy romance, but between the ages of 9 and 13 when I first read the books (and about the age of the characters) I still thought love was gross and books with romance between kids was weird. Why did kids have crushes on each other? In my eyes, boys were just my friends, I didn't understand why anyone would want to date at that age. I wasn't allowed to date until I turned 18. Now, I actually did like the romance stories in the HTTYD books but they were about adults, and it seemed appropriate for adults to have romance. (Valhallarama, Stoick, and Humungous) I found those stories interesting!
When I finished the books, I actually did sort of ship Hiccup and Cami. Because it wasn't forced, and because I was older and more receptive to love stories. Because they were older, too.
But when I started high school, something woke within me. I felt like Fishlegs looking at Tantrum for the first time. I started to be attracted to the boys around me. Now, at 19, I would welcome a relationship. I'm glad I wasn't allowed to date until I was 18 because I didn't have the maturity to understand what romantic love was at the point. I haven't yet dated anyone, and I'm glad. I didn't make any mistakes that I regret.
Other books and movies about children with romance inserted in them have always seemed strange. A lot of these kids haven't finished puberty yet, who cares if he has a nice voice, it's going to change. Kid me really liked HTTYD because of its lack of romance, because romance is the cooties. Let kids be kids.
