The slayer, a knight in white and blue, Bonny Redford slammed her eyes shut as she could not believe that this dragon is nestling. He is hugging his gold, ready to defend it with his life on the line.
"I cannot believe I was being lie to. The village chief said that the dragon is an adult. It is just a baby!" said Bonny, cocking her head, examining the baby dragon. It doesn't have black scales with a color accent as well. "And it is not a dark dragon too!"
Bonny taps her armours, seeing the bundle of gold. She looks small than what is according to the information given to her by a village chief. Did she tracks down the wrong dragon then? Bonny keep tapping on her armours when suddenly, Bonny feels a presence, she picks up her sword from her hilt and point at the person who is storming toward her.
"Whom thou there?!"
Bonny points at a wizard and another knight, dressed in purple armour.
"Please lays down your sword! I bring no harm to you, or the dragon. I am just coming to retrieve the dragon." said the knight, ready to wield his own sword to fight if action speaks louder than words.
The knight turns to face the chief of the village, a mewman who hunched over to look shorter, with an unrelenting stare.
"He won't be slain and we, The Guardians won't let this happen." said the purple knight.
Bonny looks at the knight and wizard named Leonidas, who call themselves 'The Guardians', rolling skyward.
"Antoine is telling the truth dear knight from an unknown faction," said the wizard. He pulls out the document that approves that they will take on the mission in their hands, assuring no one get hurt. There is a stamp from the supernatural community on the document to show it is legitimate. "You can leave, but I suggest you come with us to Echo Creek to know which community you are from."
~~
The colleagues of his looks at Antoine. He is holding a hatchling in his arms. While the blue-and-white knight, Bonny, is taken in for questioning by the Echo Creek Knights.
“Commander Antoine, you know that the dragon will grow up to become an adult dragon whose would burn an entire city if their treasure, their emotionally valuable, is at stake.” Said Barbara.
"Antoine….?" said another Guardian, seeing Antoine's gaze turn glaze and shift his eyes at baby dragon, having a tantrum when witnessing his gold is being taken.
The Cleansers slewed a dragon from Ravenville, they proclaim that the dragon is a threat. It is true though... The dragon had burned down Ravenville, putting lives in danger. He only did this because his treasure is threatened, a dragon got to do what a dragon got to do.
Despite not saving the dragon's life and the failure of preventing the dragon from burning down the town of Ravenville before The Cleansers did. At least, the Guardians manage to rescue the pets that were taking shelter in the reinforced monster shop cellar in the pet shop thanks to a call from Brady Plunkett, a monster specialist and ambassador for Ravenville's monster civilians, requesting for back ups. Sadly some of the monsters decide to leave this town to go to another safe zone because of their feelings of being unsafe. This leads to owners and their family leaving the town of Ravenville for them, causing Brady to feels devastated. And other safe zones having to process approval for people to live there.
"It was supposed to be my new home,” said a recent civilian of Ravenville, well suppose to be. “Until those bastards decide to disturb this monster’s slumber."
"We must not make new mistakes. We will get this dragon a new owner to reign the fiery temper," said Antoine. "Before it becomes difficult as he ages."

Summary
Having survived 3 weeks on the surface, Bonnie Labelle finds herself in GoodNeighbor looking for answers to her awakening in a Vault. She has no memory of what happened just before she entered the Vault or even the start of the war. And she herself is shocked by her skills when surviving. The mayor of GoodNeighbor is just as shocked and intrigued by how she’s survived this long.
As Bonnie worked to regain her strength, John Hancock organized a room for her to stay in with the Hotel Redford. Explaining her situation to a woman named Clair Hutchins.
Bonnie could hardly believe how kind and cordial people were here. Well except for the man the mayor stabbed. But she figured that’s why he was stabbed to begin with.
Everyone treated the ghoul so normally. And their interaction in the state house was convincing her, he wasn’t something for her to fear.
And he definitely had a lot of power around here.
“ I’ve got some things to attend to.” He said as she looked around the tattered hotel room. A simple mattress. A broken dresser. And a broken nightstand. For the wasteland, this really wasn’t all that bad. Compared to sleeping on the concrete floor of a closet in an old shop. The old tattered mattress was like a beckoning cloud for her to rest on.
“ So take your time adjusting. And perhaps we can have a chat in the third rail later.” He said with a grin. “ I’ll treat you to a drink.”
She turned and observed him as he nodded his head and turned to walk out.
“ Why are you like this?” She suddenly asked. The words escaping her mouth before she could filter them. She shook her head trying to find what she meant to say.
“ What? A ghoul?” He asked with a chuckle.
“ No..” she said quickly. “ Well I mean… I suppose I’m curious about that too but..” she took a breath. “ I mean you’re actually being… a person. Everyone I’ve met so far has either tried to kill me or wanted something in return for just speaking to them..” she explained slowly.
“ You could have easily killed me when I passed out earlier… and you didn’t…. You took care of me.” She explained.
“ Goodneighbor is for the people by the people.” Hancock explained crossing his arms as he leaned against the door frame. “ Which means we take care of each other here.” He said matter of factly.
“ You clearly need help… with what? I don’t know just yet but we got all the time in the world.” He shrugged. “ Not everyone in the commonwealth is going to hurt or kill you. Just… maybe the majority.” He joked with a chuckle.
“ Plus… a vault dweller like yourself is even more vulnerable. There’s some things you gotta learn if you’re gonna stay up here. And based on what you’ve told me, you don’t have much of a choice but to learn.” He explained.
“ So I’ll offer help. It’s just up to you if you want it.” He smiled.
She listened to his words closely before slowly nodding. Her shoulders relaxed a bit, as she smiled back at him.
“ Thank you, Mayor.” She said after a moment. “ I really am grateful. Though I may appear stand-offish. I truly appreciate the help.”
Hancock’s eyebrow raised. Her kindness and well spoken words were odd to hear. She seemed so proper. And pristine. So clean and perfect. It intimidated him a bit.
He simply tilted his hat up a bit and smirked. “ No need for that mayor crap. Just call me, Hancock.” He chuckled.
“ I’ll leave you to rest.” He said as he pushed himself off the door frame and left her alone.
She took a breath and laid down thinking over this strange new reality of hers. Ghouls. Vault Dwellers. It felt like a nightmare.
Being in Goodneighbor did provide some comfort. It felt similar to the world she once knew.
Hancock had the kindness of a politician.
She furrowed her brow.
Politicians were part the reason this happened to begin with though. She couldn’t come to terms with trusting him just yet. Or the people here.
As her mind raced she dosed off again. Her body recovering with much needed rest.
When she awoke, the clock on the wall said it was 8PM. And the town sounded more lively outside through the broken window.
She rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she stood up and leaned out the window. Down below the hotel, residents talked casually. Armed gunman talked with them. She overheard conversations about their daily lives. The errands they needed to run. Some gossip about other residents and settlements.
She couldn’t help but smile as she listened to their conversations.
After letting herself wake up more she pulled away from the window and looked to her armor on the dresser. Hancock mentioned meeting to talk more in the third rail. Would her armor be needed?
She shook her head.
If I want to fit in here I need to relax. Just a bit.
She left her armor and her rifle. But slipped a knife into the pocket of her tattered dress.
Before leaving the hotel she asked Clair where the Third rail was. And followed her directions to the supposed bar.
She was curious what a bar in this world would be like. As she entered the bouncer looked at her curiously. As she met his gaze she fought the urge to look away from fear. Another ghoul.
She simply offered a small smile. He smiled back and welcomed her inside, down a long dark hallway. As she neared closer to the end, she could hear faint music, and a lovely voice accompanying it. Along with some drowned out chatter.
As the hallway opened up to the bar, her nerves relaxed a bit more. Patrons sat around lounging with their drinks. She could smell cigarette smoke and alcohol, but the voice of the woman caught her attention even more.
A beautiful woman sang in the corner on a makeshift stage. She wore a gorgeous red dress. Her hair was jet black, cut short. She was absolutely stunning.
Her voice only matched her appearance perfectly. She was completely mezmerozied by her as she sang. Her worries drained away, as she smiled watching the woman sing.
“ She’s got quite a set of pipes huh?” A familiar voice broke her hypnosis to her right. She turned to meet Hancock’s eyes.
She nodded eagerly as she looked back at her. “ She’s absolutely gorgeous.”
“ I’d say magnolia is the diamond of the wasteland.” He said with a chuckle as he took a drink from his glass.
“ What’s your vice?” He asked, nudging her arm. “ I said I’d treat ya to a drink.”
She eyed what he was drinking curiously. Looked clear. Perhaps Vodka. Hopefully, Vodka.
“ What’s yours?” She asked.
“ Much harder stuff than this.” he laughed. “ But this is just some vodka.”
She relaxed. “ I'm really relieved to know vodka is still available.” She said with a laugh.
He chuckled as he ushered her over to the bar, where he ordered her her own drink. She noticed he handed the bartender some bottle caps. Her eyebrows furrowed.
“ Bottle caps?” she asked curiously as he handed her the glass.
“ Yeah. Guess you haven't figured that out yet. Caps are the currency here. Well just about everywhere in the commonwealth.” He shrugged as he guided her to a separate room just outside the bar. Magnolia’s angelic voice, still in ear distance, but quieter for them to speak to one another.
“ Oh…” she said softly, recalling all the Nuka-Cola caps she had tossed when she was lucky enough to find them for substance the past few weeks. “ Whoops” She whispered.
Hancock chuckled and sat down on a lounge chair. She sat across from him on a loveseat. The room was lit with red lighting, posters from the old world hung around as decor.
She lifted the glass to her lips and sipped the bitter liquid. Her body reacted with pleasure. Her nerves felt more at ease almost instantly. Hancock noticed immediately.
“ Oh yeah. You definitely needed that.” he chuckled. “ You ever need something stronger we can work something out. But that’ll do for now. Did you get some good rest?”
She nodded as she took another sip. “ Yeah actually. I haven't slept on a mattress in… “ She furrowed her brow.
Hancock raised an eyebrow. “ In…? You don’t remember?” he asked.
She shook her head.
“ well… That’s surprising. Always heard rumors you vault dwellers had a luxurious style down there. At least that’s what I’ve heard about Vault 81. They actually trade with us surface folk.” He said in confusion, taking another sip of his drink.
“ or yanno, dead bodies left over from whatever horrible shit the old folk decided to do to one another.” He sighed.
She looked at him confused. “ Why would they be different?” She asked.
He shrugged. “ No idea. All I know is I'm glad to have been born up here. Where I had the freedom to take control of my own fate… at least to some degree.” He chuckled.
“ So what was your vault’s deal? They just kick you out..? Or..?”
She shook her head and sighed. “ No… I…” She sighed. “ I woke up from this.. Pod. Like I was frozen. I was freezing for hours after I got out. I passed out in this.. Lab” she said trying to recall her first moments out of the pod.
“ Frozen?” Hancock said, leaning on his knees holding his glass between them. “ Aint that something.”
She nodded. “ When I came to, I got to explore a bit.. But I didn't find much.. Or rather I couldn't find much. I found a rifle and a way out. Everything looked like.. My home. But ruined. I found my old house, with some tattered things I remembered I owned. Luckily this dress was in an old suitcase I forgot about.” She said as she gestured to her attire.
He chuckled. “ It suits you.” he complimented. “ very well.. But you do stand out in it up here.”
She smiled at his compliment and nodded. “ yeah I’ve realized.” She laughed softly. “ I didn't know what to do so I just… kept walking.” She shrugged. “ I met these traveling settlers. Who explained some stuff to me.. Like the date, the war, and a bit of what to look out for…”
“ Why didn't you join them?” Hancock asked curiously.
“ because another group swooped in and killed all of them.” she said bluntly. After a moment she explained.
“ I tried to help. I killed some of them.. I had never killed anyone before and I just..” She took a breath. “ I took what I could from the aftermath after they finally left their bodies.” She said in shame.
“ And I just kept walking.”
Hancock stared at her with a solemn expression. It was silent between the both of them as they stared at one another.
“ I’m sorry.” he finally broke the silence. “ I know that couldn't have been easy to walk away from.”
She remained silent.
“ That’s just what it’s like up here.” he shrugged and observed her face. Her green eyes were hollow. Full of exhaustion and sadness. He frowned as he tried to think of how to shift her mind off of what happened.
“ So when did you go under the ice?” He asked.
She sighed. “ I don’t know the exact date. I can’t remember… but the last date I saw before I woke up was October 2nd, 2077–”
Hancock nearly spit out his drink. “ What”
She looked at him and sighed with a nod. “ Yeah… I was 27.. So I guess now I’m..”
“ 237 years old..” he said with a look of shock and bewilderment. He sat back in the chair. “ Holy shit.”
She nodded as she took another, much large sip of her drink.
“ And you don’t remember anything after that date? At all?” he asked.
She shook her head. “ The biggest mystery to me right now is why I was in the vault before the bombs dropped. Those settlers said they dropped on October 23rd, 2077.”
He nodded. “ So you were in there for a few weeks before you even needed to be…” He theorized.
She opened her mouth to speak when she was interrupted by a woman’s voice.
“ Well hello there Mayor. I see you’ve shown your guest the VIP room”
Bonnie turned to see the stunning woman who was singing just moments before. She looked more beautiful up close.
“ yes ma’am.” He said proudly.
“ And I trust you’re being the perfect gentleman.” She joked as she sat on the arm chair of Bonnie’s seat.
“ Only if she wants me to be, honestly.” He said with a wink and a smirk before drinking from his class.
“ Im only teasing.” he chuckled.
“ Hey there, doll. I’m Magnolia. I sing here. Who might you be?” She asked with a kind smile.
Bonnie straighted up and held her hand out. “ Bonnie Labelle… You have a beautiful voice.”
“ Why thank you!” She said with an even bigger smile. “ I love your dress… but it does look to be a bit tattered.”
Bonnie sighed. “ Yeah.. haven't had much of a fashion choice around here.” She laughed. “ Seems you got everything here but a fashion boutique.” She joked.
Magnolia laughed. “ I like her can we keep her?” She said looking to Hancock. “And she’s right. We need a seamstress or something, Mayor. Imagine the crowds I could draw in with even more stunning outfits”
Hancock chuckled. “ Those are hard to come by these days but…” he shrugged. “ For you, Magnolia, I’m sure we could figure something out.”
Magnolia chuckled and looked back to Bonnie.
“ I’m sure those clothes aren't as comfortable as they once were. Mind if I steal her for a moment, Hancock?”
Hancock smiled. “ Up to her. I don’t own her.” He joked.
Bonnie laughed softly and looked at Magnolia.
“ Come along then. Let’s get you some new clothes. I need more friends with fashion expertise.” She said pulling Bonnie up and dragging her out of the room.
This woman was so graceful. And hard to say no to. Bonnie envied her immediately, and loved the idea of being her friend.
Friends must be a hard thing to make now. So far, the company she was in would be perfect though.
Magnolia led her to an upstairs room. “ This here is my home. Just above the bar.” She explained as she led Bonnie to a closet in the corner, beside her bed.
“ I don’t got much. But I definitely have things I do not and will not wear so let’s have a look..” She murmured as she opened the closet full of clothes. She pulled some pieces out and laid them across the bed for Bonnie to observe.
An old dress. Some pants. A black coat. A Leather yellow jacket. A few simple tops.
“ There we go.. Take your pick” Magnolia said proudly.
“ These are in such good condition…” Bonnie commented.
“ Why thank you, Doll.” She said proudly. “ Need to look nice for my sets of course. I do what I can to keep my clothing in pristine condition.”
Bonnie smiled. “ Are you sure it’s okay for me to take some clothes?”
Magnolia nodded eagerly. “ Please do.. Just means I get to have one of the boys to find me more.” She winked.
Bonnie chuckled and grabbed the yellow leather jacket. It looked like something she could wear and blend in better.
Along with a pair of black jeans, and a top. It was simple. But not eye catching. Just what she needed.
She smiled to herself. “ These will do just fine.”
Magnolia smiled and turned around giving her privacy to change.
“ You know, the mayor does not always just kill someone for a guest… even if Finn was somewhat of a nuisance.” She chuckled.
Bonnie took her dress off, slipping on the clean black jeans and top with ease. “ He seems like the type to take no shit to be honest…”
“ You’ve got that right.” Magnolia chuckled. “ But… he’s taken interest. So you must be one hell of a mystery for him to focus on.”
“ A mystery for sure. But I’m sure the mayor is busy with his own things. I'll be out of here once I figure out what it is I'm meant to do up here.” She sighed.
“ He’s a great guy. Is all I’m saying. I can tell you’re uneasy around him. But don’t let his looks fool you. He’s got a big heart.” She laughed softly. “ you can trust him.”
“ How did you know I was nervous with him?” Bonnie asked as she slipped the yellow jacket on.
“ Women’s intuition I guess… You seemed on the fence when it comes to trust. And I get it. From what I’ve heard, you aint from the surface. So I can only imagine what you’ve had to see and do to get here.”
Bonnie stayed silent as she looked at herself in the mirror. She looked more like a surface dweller. It helped ease her nerves a bit more.
“ Look at you.” Magnolia whistled. “ Looking good!”
Bonnie smiled and turned to her and smiled. After a moment she sighed. “ If people like you and the mayor still exist up here… I think I’ll be okay.” She said coming to terms with her trust in the mayor and Goodneighbor.

This is the first of the Fisher Price families, the old-money Bluemonts. The adults, from left to right on the back row, are:
Cornelius “Captain” Bluemont, who owns a boat but otherwise is not a captain.
His sensible wife, Evelyn, who isn’t into the whole nautical thing.
Thomas “Farmer” Bluemont, who’s not actually a farmer.
Caroline, his wife, who works in finance.
Angela, his sister, a train conductor and maybe a lesbian.
The children, from left to right, are:
Robbie, kind of a Robert Redford in The Way We Were type.
Nicole, a headstrong party girl sometimes known as Bitch Hat (her haters can’t handle her).
Tony, a romantic.
The sextuplets Barbara, Blythe, Bonnie, Bianca, Beatrice, and Bridget (the outgoing one, the sensible one, the farmer, the sophisticate, the emo, and the funny one, respectively).
Timmy, the baby of the family.
Charlotte, Farmer’s daughter from an extramarital affair (all other children were either born to Caroline and Farmer or adopted from strangers).

Bonny looks at the entire fiefdom, Echo Creeks on top of the hill with Keith, a member of the Guardians of the Supernatural. A frown forms on her face.
“No. We have an alternative. We’re going to create a program for the villagers to teach them how to train and take care of the dragon, once we gain the dragon’s trust and teach the dragon to have an attachment to the people in the villages and learning about the humanity,” Keith explained. “I am currently in the process of organizing and execute this program because it is my idea. All I have to do is get Antoine and Nebula’s confirmation.”
The fairytale character looks at the monster tamer wondering if he is nuts. Making a dragon whose terrorizes the villagers, to be on their side.
“Why are you doing this?” Bonny asked the monster tamer. “Keeping the dragons alive. Preserving magic?”
Keith is silence looking at the daughter of two knights and the adopted granddaughter of The Current Red Queen from Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. He doesn’t know what the habitat of the dragons is like in Wonderland or in the Fairytale World, but he knows that dragons are seen as ‘evil’ creatures whose purpose is to terrorize a kingdom and kidnap a princess and that the dragon needs to be slain by a hero for a happy fairytale ending. He honestly doesn’t like that concept in fairytale stories.
“It feels right for me because I love the supernatural world and the creatures living in it, and because…”
Protecting the dragons, both on Earth-ni and a dimension calls The Planet of The Dragons, from Chase Young and The Heylin is the second most important duty of being a Xiaolin Dragons. It is the biggest factor to this Human vs. Dragon Conflict. The number one priority as a Xiaolin Monks is to protect the world from evil and keeping yin and yang in the universe in balance. That was why Candy is trained from a young age to master her elemental affinity, water, and learning to keep historical records (an important task as a monk). Candy explained to Keith back at Camp Synonymous, that during her time helping her father in the archive, she learnt that at one point, Dojo travelled to the far far future and was trick by his own descendant to cause human enslavement by the dragons after the era of peace, equality, and friendship between dragons and humans, that Dojo achieved in the future too, was over. That was why the Xiaolin Council made an alliance with The World Dragon Council to help with the problem, the conflict between dragons and humans, when the monks, Raymond’s father and Candy’s fathers goes their separate ways. That was why he wants to help as much as he can to make the supernatural world a better place for both humans, dragons, and monsters. That is why Candy has full trust in him in sharing valuable information to him, as her genuine friend.
“I want to be just like my big brother, he is my hero, and most importantly to help my friends from summer camp make their responsibility in the supernatural world better.”
Bonny looks at Keith, admires his selfless cause and his good intention of helping others.
“I see, thanks you for telling me this. I am honoured to meet such a fine man, full of honour and noble aspirations for the cause.”
Keith rubs the back of his neck. “Geez, you don’t have to say that.”
“You are too modest Sir Mystery,” said Bonny, authentic smiling at the son of Martin Mystery and Alexandra Mystery.
Candy Nguyen and Keith Mystery belong to @cooltmoney95
Antoine Diaz and Nebula Butterfly-Lucitor (all mentioned) belong to @ej-cappy-universe
Bonny Redford belongs to me
The Xiaolin Council and Dojo from Xiaolin Showdown and Xiaolin Chronicles is created by Christy Hui
The World Dragon Council from American Dragon: Jake Long is created by Jeff Goode for Walt Disney Animation
Ever After High belongs to Mattel
Martin Mystery from Martin Mystery belongs to Marathon Media Group and Image Entertainment Corporation
Alexandra Casoy from Totally Spiez! belongs to Banijay Kids & Family from Season 1-6 until Warner Bros. Discovery owns it at Season 7
"Your heart's in the right place, but you don't understand what could happen if you slay that dragon."
"It stops terrorizing all the surrounding villages?"
"Dragons are territorial, but that doesn't mean they don't have family and friends. Kill one dragon, and many more will come and raze the whole fiefdom in retribution."
"So what are we supposed to do? Just let it keep burning fields and stealing livestock until we all starve?"

Just a couple of Trisonas of me and my bestfriend I’ve been working on.
Name reveal! Well kinda…😅 The first name and nickname is mine, the surname was stolen from Annie Lennox 🤣
As for Mer, her surname is from Bonnie Tyler and Marvelous Mer is just some weird nickname I made up.
The little brat we have with us, is just some kid that just showed up some day and we both kind of adopted. He has a mother and father that love him very much but he wants to hang out with us. His name was inspired by Robert Redford and his portrayal of The Sundance Kid.
So what’s our story?
We’re the deputies of December City that try to employ Vash the Stampede as our new Sheriff. Our first one got shot. We just didn’t have it in us to replace our beloved mentor, (besides being a deputy is so much fun!) so we were on the look out for a new one. Vash declined unfortunately. Waaaah! 😭
We like Vash are peacekeepers who don’t like to shoot at people. We do shoot, just not actual bullets. Instead we each use a special gun that can either shoot soft foam bullets (much like NERF pellets) in it’s dry form or just plain water in it’s wet form. We use these to bring justice to December without bloodshed.
I have loads more info about these two and their little sidekick. Might post more info soon!

Movie Review | The Chase (Penn, 1966)
I think I originally watched this for Jane Fonda, who was at her most mind bogglingly hot at this time, and here she plays the unfaithful but goodhearted wife of an escaped convict. Her husband here is not that awful Frenchman she was married to in real life at the time, but Robert Redford, playing Charlie "Bubber" "Bubba" Reeves. And I think problem of Redford playing someone called "Bubber" or "Bubba" is self evident. I am a Redford fan. I think he can make his kind of straight arrow pretty engaging (one need only look at his team-up with Fonda the following year, Barefoot in the Park) and can play bastards too (one need only look at Downhill Racer and can have a certain rakish if dorky charm (one need only look at his teamups with Paul Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting). But I think here he lacks the edge to evoke the fear his character supposedly inspires. I can imagine someone a bit more virile, a bit more capable of violence, a bit more at home as a good ol' boy, like Joe Don Baker, working better in the role. I probably suggest Joe Don for anything remotely Southern, but my rule is that Redford can have the lead role above the Mason-Dixon Line and Joe Don gets everything below.
I also wonder if the movie would have worked together if Redford's character was Black. (Obviously played by someone other than Redford.) The movie uses Redford's escape to bring the tensions in this Southern community into focus, including racism directed towards the Black populace, and the sheer bloodlust felt by the racist white characters towards Redford might make a lot more sense were he a Black man, especially one married to a white woman. In the context of Arthur Penn's career, if Bonnie and Clyde was the bomb that blew the '60s wide open, Mickey One, with its paranoid French New Wave inspired style, is likely the lighting of the fuse, and this one, with its suffocating Southern atmosphere and cacophonous finale, is the agonizing wait for the spark to reach the dynamite.
What I will say is that Penn, to his credit, makes the mob mentality that takes hold look entirely unappealing, although I found myself challenged by how entirely off putting most of these characters are, shouting their way through most of their scenes. You know you're in trouble when one of the most likable characters here is the adulterous richboy played by James Fox. At least his only only flaws are adultery and insecurity. He still seems like a good enough dude to his lover and her husband, and whose affair is likely the second or third most positive male-female relationship in the movie. And on that note, one of the pleasures of this movie are all the great performances, not just Fonda and Fox, but also E.G. Marshall as Fox's even more rich and he knows it father, Janice Rule, who turns this into a Southern belle shoutfest while she cucks her insecure husband Robert Duvall, and most importantly Marlon Brando, who mushmouths his way through his Southern drawl better than most of his costars. I'm not the first to note Brando's penchant for onscreen martyrdom, and let me tell ya, they beat the hell out of him in this one.

Butch Cassidy:
A biopic that could easily sweep a best buddy film competition, Paul Newman and Robert Redford play best friends/outlaws Butch and Sundance in this film recounting their race to Bolivia to flee from the authorities after a series of failed train robberies.
Bonnie and Clyde:
Girl meets Boy who is stealing her mom's car. It's love at first sight that quickly turns into a bloodbath across the Great Depression-era South.

A new recurring feature in which the Kevrock audience (both of you, don’t be shy!) is invited to weigh in on the best female actor of a particular decade. Today the ‘70s, when men were men and women played prostitutes (Seriously. So many prostitutes) Your candidates:
Faye Dunaway. Coming off ‘60s triumphs Bonnie and Clyde (1967) and The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), she appeared in Arthur Penn’s Little Big Man (1970) playing a randy frontier missionary who becomes a prostitute. She then played the evil (and sexy) Milady de Winter in Richard Lester’s tongue-in-cheek version of The Three Musketeers. In 1974 she was in two movies nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. In Roman Polanski’s Chinatown, one of the decades best, she played the daughter of a loathsome tycoon with a big secret (“She’s my sister, She’s my daughter…”) and was rewarded with her own Oscar nomination. And in also-nominated (Really) The Towering Inferno she looked pretty in an evening gown. She was superfluous in Sydney Pollack’s Three Days of the Condor (1975) but won an Oscar the next year in Sidney Lumet’s Network as a programming executive who merges a network’s news and entertainment departments and has a new anchor killed for low ratings. She closed out the decade with a stylish thriller, The Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)
Jane Fonda. Fonda won an Oscar for Klute, where she played a prostitute. She followed up this triumph by being photographed sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun, which got her black-balled in Hollywood for five years. When things cooled off she made three films and got three Oscar nominations in a row. She was a fine, brittle Lillian Hellman in Fred Zinneman’s Julia (1977). She won for the aftermath-of-Vietnam drama Coming Home (1978) and got another nomination as a TV reporter who becomes woke about the danger of nuclear power in The China Syndrome (1979). She also did two comedies: Neil Simon’s 1978 California Suite and 1979’s The Electric Horseman, where she costarred with Robert Redford.
Goldie Hawn. She started the decade by winning a Supporting Oscar for Gene Saks’ 1969 Cactus Flower, did the well-received comedies There’s a Girl in my Soup, Butterflies are Free, and $, (where she played a prostitute because of course she did.) She broke through with Steven Spielberg’s The Sugarland Express (1974) and co-starred with Warren Beatty and Julie Christie in Hal Ashby’s underrated Shampoo (1975). She played another prostie in the comedy, western The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox (1976) and co-starred with then-hot Chevy Chase in the comedy suspense film Foul Play (1978). Not one of these films lost money.
Diane Keaton. Keaton’s rep in the ‘70s rests on both the movies she did with Woody Allen and her role of Kaye Adams in The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974). Her work as Kaye is underrated (even by the Keaton herself) but crucial to depicting the isolation of the Corleone’s world and the expected subservience of a Mafia wife. The way she almost whimpers “They’re my children too” is one of the most heartbreaking moments in both films. She was a true partner to Allen in Play It Again Sam (1972), Sleeper(1973), and Love and Death (1975). She won an Oscar for playing Annie Hall (1977) and making audiences love her (“La-di-dah”) and deserved one for making them hate her in 1979’s Manhattan (if only for the way she pronounced “Van Gogh”). And while her character in 1977’s Looking for Mr. Goodbar had anonymous sex in singles bars, Keaton did make it through the decade without playing a prostitute.
Barbra Streisand. Streisand, who only made two films in the 60s, started the 70s with the Vincent Minelli reincarnation musical, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) and the comedy The Owl and the Pussycat (1970) where she played a prostitute, just to get it out of the way. She did Irvin Kershner’s mad housewife comedy Up the Sandbox (1972), Peter Bogdanovich’s manic screwball tribute, What’s Up Doc? (1972), and Peter Yates’ slapstick For Pete’s Sake (1974), where she plays a housewife who almost becomes a prostitute, but it doesn’t take. She had her biggest hit of the decade with Sydney Pollack’s blockbuster weeper The Way We Were (1974). She reprised her Oscar-winning Funny Girl role with Funny Lady (1975), starred in the worst A Star Is Born remake (1977), and reteamed with her What’s Up Doc? costar Ryan O’Neal for the romantic comedy The Main Event (1979).
So, what’s your choice for Queen of the 70s? Vote in the comments section. Write-in votes accepted. No profanity unless it’s funny. Results in two weeks. Ish.

Rules Don’t Apply
Director Warren Beatty Stars Alden Ehrenreich, Lily Collins, Warren Beatty, Matthew Broderick USA 2016 Language English, a tiny bit of Spanish Colour (with a little black & white)
Handsomely mounted, ill-conceived vanity project
[Spoilers]
In a sense, what we have here are two films welded together. One is a romantic comedy-drama about two God-fearing but ambitious young Americans venturing into Hollywood in the late 1950s. The second is a comedy about the men working for an extremely rich man who is suffering from serious mental illness (yeah, I did say comedy…) It’s not hard to imagine a film in which these elements happen at the same time, but here the story hinges and the character who is much talked about but never seen in the early part of the movie dominates its latter stages. Oh, and that character is Howard Hughes. And he’s played by writer, director, producer and star Warren Beatty.
If you have some knowledge of Hollywood history, you might have spotted at least one problem already. In the late 1950s Howard Hughes was in his early fifties. But when this film was finally shot – after years in development, apparently – Beatty was in his late seventies. And that changes everything: a man nearing 80 struggling to remember things that happened a few minutes ago is different from a man of 53 repeating words in an odd way. And without being ageist, you might have doubts about a man in his late seventies flying a plane whatever his state of mental health.
If you’re worried about some The Irishman-style CGI horrors, don’t be. Beatty has written the script so that Hughes is an old man. There’s a quote supposedly from Hughes at the beginning saying: ‘Never check an interesting fact’, and then a note saying dates and times have been changed. So Beatty is basically saying, ’Fuck the pedants.’ But if you’re going to run free with the facts, why not just create a very Howard Hughes-like character with a different name? You know, in the spirit of Willard Whyte in Diamonds Are Forever or Dominic Cooper’s Howard Stark in Captain America and Agent Carter?
But that’s not the main problem with this film. No, the main problem is a structural one. We spend the opening hour or so in the endearing company of Marla Mabrey (Lily Collins), a small-town beauty queen who has been given a contract by Hughes’ studio RKO, and Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenreich), a driver working for Hughes who has never met the boss. Both new in town, both ambitious but innocent, they are drawn together. But as we are starting to care about what happens to these two, Marla is removed from the story.
Because this is Warren’s show and this is his time. So from now on we get Howard dragging his bewildered and long-suffering employees around the world, making outrageous demands that they have to battle to fulfil. Do we gain any real insights into Hughes? I think not: there’s some very basic stuff about his relationship with his father and how that affected his take on the rest of the world. But there’s no serious attempt to consider to what extent he was mentally ill and to what extent he was just wilful. And it’s not very funny.
You could argue that there’s a meta self-critique going on here: this is a film about an incredibly spoilt man that only exists because Warren Beatty has a magic aura in Hollywood, based on a few hits many, many decades past. I was trying to think of who else anywhere near Beatty’s age could get a major studio to back this kind of director-star project and I’m thinking only Robert Redford and Clint Eastwood. And Redford has worked more solidly in the last 25 years than Beatty and isn’t reliant on having outsmarted everyone in the industry with Bonnie & Clyde in 1967(!). Eastwood, obviously, is almost the opposite of Beatty having consistently made movies people actually want to see over many decades.
As a tribute to Beatty’s standing within the community, he gets to waste of the talents of Martin Sheen and particularly Alec Baldwin (not, incidentally, playing the same role he plays in Martin Scorsese’s Hughes biopic The Aviator, a much better film).
Even some of the good things turn sour here – the title song is rather lovely surprise when it turns up about a third of the way through the film, somewhat less so when you hear it for the fourth time.
Collins is excellent, Ehrenreich not quite as good here as he is in Hail, Caesar! They work well together. If only they could have had the whole film, and if only Beatty hadn’t cast himself and then given his character so much screen time. Like I said, making an incredibly self-indulgent film about an over-indulged man doesn’t make it any better – in fact, it might make it worse.
