The Most Common Types of Cinderella in "Cinderella" Adaptations
After reading @ariel-seagull-wings's great post about the most common portrayals of Cinderella's Prince, I thought I'd take a similar look at the different versions of Cinderella herself. As with the Prince, we've seen very different portrayals over the years to suit each time and place's ideals of what a fairy tale heroine should be like, and while each one is unique, certain patterns do reappear. These are the six most common Cinderellas in my experience.
The Waif
Tumblr media
This is the most traditional Cinderella – the type seen in virtually every adaptation until the 1950s. She's a very young, innocent, fragile girl, and her rags are especially ragged and smudged with ashes. In effect, she's like an older version of little Cosette from Les Misérables. She lives in terror of her Stepmother, quaking at any sign of anger from her, and is often implied to not just be insulted and forced to serve, but physically abused. And though she tries to be content with only her dreams and accept her hard life without complaining, she's still a deeply melancholy little figure. She can often be found sitting by the fire and singing a wistful folk tune. The audience wants to rescue her, and so does the Prince after her innocent, artless demeanor, her instinctive kindness, and her natural grace and beauty win his heart. Standout Cinderellas of this type include those from the two classic opera adaptations, Rossini's La Cenerentola and Massenet's Cendrillon, as well as those from the two Russian film versions (the 1947 live-action film and its 1979 animated remake), and Lesley Ann Warren in the 1965 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical.
The Girl Next Door
Tumblr media
Like "the Waif," this Cinderella is very young, sweet, innocent, and vulnerable, but she's less battered and melancholy. She's capable of quietly standing up to her stepfamily, or at least trying to, and capable in lighter moments of being playful and clever, with a gentle sense of humor. Her Prince tends to be as much of a friend as a lover to her, bonding with her over shared dreams and longings, and seeing her as a someone he can "really talk to" as an equal. She's also more likely than other Cinderellas to have a real character arc, struggling with fears and self-doubt at first, but ultimately growing in self-respect and inner strength, and realizing that even in rags she's worthy of her Prince's love. She's clearly not just meant to be touching, or just a role model, but a person whom the average young viewer can identify with. Brandy Norwood's 1997 Rodgers and Hammerstein Cinderella is of this type; so is the heroine of the 1996 anime Cinderella Monogatari, Jennifer Beals in the Cinderella episode of Faerie Tale Theatre, and Emilia Schüle in the the German anthology Märchenperlen.
The Idealist
Tumblr media
This Cinderella comes across as more mature than the first two: a young woman, not a girl. Even in her rags, she's as neat, clean, and well-put-together as her hard work allows, and from the start she has an air of dignity, clearly having been taught to be a proper lady by her parents before they died. She usually has a sunny, cheerful disposition too, although like every other Cinderella she has moments of despair. At the core of all this is a profound idealism, just as staunch as Don Quixote's: a vision of who she wants to be and what she wants to believe, which she follows like a graceful lady knight on a quest. The word that best describes what she does is "maintaining": in the face of all hardship, maintaining her cheerfulness, her dignity, her kindness, and her faith in her dreams of future happiness. The classic idealist Cinderella is the Disney Cinderella, both in her 1950 animated form and in Lily James's 2015 portrayal, while another example is Julie Andrews in the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical's original 1957 version.
The Tomboy
Tumblr media
This Cinderella is more of a gamine than a waif; more of an Éponine than a Cosette. She puts up with her stepfamily's abuse because otherwise she would be homeless, but she handles it with a feisty attitude, sassing back when they insult her and standing up to them with real rage when they push her too far. When she's not working, her preferred escape is into a forest or some other wild place, where she can ride a horse, climb trees, swim in a river, or just be free. The Prince is usually drawn more to her strength of will, her passion, and/or her sarcastic wit than he is to her beauty. A subtype of this Cinderella is the gritty outcast: an angry, unsociable girl who wears her grimy, unfeminine looks with pride and masks her pain with rudeness, until a kind, perceptive Prince sees the princess within her. Cinderellas of that subtype are Leslie Caron's Ella in 1955's The Glass Slipper and the anti-heroine of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 2021 musical. Meanwhile, more conventionally charming tomboy Cinderellas are Libuše Šafránková in the Czech cult classic Three Wishes for Cinderella, Christianne Tisdale in the lesser-known musical A Tale of Cinderella, Aylin Tezel in the German anthology Sechs auf einen Streich (who skirts the edge between "the Tomboy" and "the Girl Next Door"), and Drew Barrymore's Danielle in the 1998 classic Ever After: A Cinderella Story... although she combines this with a different variation of the character, outlined below.
The Activist
Tumblr media
This Cinderella's hard life has made her an advocate for others who are abused or oppressed. Whether these others are the kingdom's ordinary poor and working classes or magical creatures who face discrimination from humans, she'll do all she can to help them, even if it means getting into trouble with authorities. You can expect her to be more intellectual than other Cinderellas, to be a lover of socio-political books, and to be close friends with fellow servants, beggars, or even revolutionaries. She also tends to have a low opinion of the Prince at first, as he starts out as either a bit of a snob or else too sheltered and blind to social injustice; their romance arc revolves largely around her teaching him to be a better future king. Without a doubt, this Cinderella will be a an outstanding queen who improves her subjects' lives. As far as I know, this characterization first appeared in Ever After: A Cinderella Story, where Drew Barrymore's Danielle combines it with "the Tomboy"; in her footsteps followed Anne Hathaway's Ella in the 2004 film version of Ella Enchanted, and the Cinderella of the 2013 Broadway version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical.
The Artist
Tumblr media
This version of Cinderella has a special talent that she wants to share with the world. Maybe it's fashion design, like in the 2021 Sony/Amazon film; maybe it's composing music, like in Alma Deutscher's opera; or maybe she's an inventor, like in Betsy Cornwell's YA novel Mechanica. Hardly anyone knows or appreciates her work, but every moment she can spare from housework is spent pouring her heart and soul into her talent. Her dream is to use it to earn an independent living, free from her Stepmother, who will stop at nothing to thwart that dream. The Prince in this version helps to support Cinderella's work, either at the ball or beforehand, and her main reason for going to the ball is to showcase her artistry. Of all the Cinderellas, this one most typically doesn't become the future queen in the end, because her ideal ending is to gain fame and fortune from her talent. If the responsibilities of the crown would interfere with her goals, then either the Prince abdicates his throne to be with her, or else they decide they're better as friends than as a couple.
Which type of Cinderella is your favorite? Or what do you like best about each one?

Novella-length casefics, Part 2
Part 2 of my rec list for novella-length (ca. 15-50K) casefics. Split due to length.
Part 1 [click]
Part 2 below
The Adventure of Kitty Riley by Ariana (12K, Teen, Johnlock, Sherlock/OFC) Kitty Riley has started using her position as a tabloid journalist to blackmail people. After his return, Sherlock decides to do something about it, embarking on an adventure which amongst other things, involves Sherlock on a date with a girl, and creeping around in the dark with John, holding hands.
The Adventure of the Six Painted Virginsby Saathi1013 (14K, Explicit, Johnlock) Sherlock dons an unusual disguise for a case. John is…conflicted.
The Camford Dares by writerfan2013 (17K, Teen, Johnlock) Sherlock is being mysterious and secretive and John is being particularly stubborn and their annoying case in a well-known university town is not helping anything.
The Case of the Meddling Siblings by destinationtoast (37K, Mature, Johnlock) Mycroft and Harry Watson team up to send John and Sherlock on a case to distract a Sherlock who’s been pining after John.  And Harry, at least, is determined to get the boys together.
The Cornish Cottage by flawedamythyst (32K, Teen, Johnlock) In the wake of John's divorce, Sherlock tries to cheer him up with a trip to Cornwall. Adaptation of ACD's The Adventure of the Devil's Foot.
The Halloween Party by XistentialAngst (19K, Mature, Johnlock) Sherlock and John attend a Halloween party on the trail of a vampire killer -- a man who's been seducing his victims and taking all their blood.  Sexy costumes, bad puns, hideous danger, frantic sex in hidden places and some Halloween-flavored fluff are all on hand to "treat" you.  Boo.
The Killer with the Yellow Wall-Paper by kittlery (27K, Teen, Gen) Sherlock navigates a case - and John - with his usual tact and social grace.
The Last Case of Dr. John Watson by Susan (14K, Explicit, Johnlock)  If he really had less than twenty-four hours to live, was it too much to ask that it be sunny?  Being poisoned and soaked to the skin on the same day seemed to John a bit of cosmic overkill. Sherlock's only hope of saving John is finding the antidote before it's too late. But where does he start?
The Master of Latham Hall by Kryptaria (47K, Teen, Johnlock) Ten years after meeting Sherlock Holmes, John Watson has successfully kept only one secret from the world's only consulting detective: the most important secret he's ever had. Now, drawn into an impossible web of murders at Latham Hall, John learns the terrible price a man must pay for keeping certain things secret.
The Napoleon by darcylindbergh (25K, Explicit, Johnlock) Halloween, 1989: John and Sherlock both have big plans for the night, but serial killers have the worst possible timing.
The Night Riviera from Paddington to Penzance and Back Again by Iwantthatcoat (13K, Mature, Johnlock) Mrs Hudson has decided her boys need a little vacation together (after the events of S4) away from London and has booked them an inordinantly (per Sherlock) long train ride from Paddinton Station to Penzance.
The Norwood Love Builders by flawedamythyst (47K, Teen, Johnlock) Sherlock and John go undercover to solve the murder of Joanna Oldacre, but things are complicated by the many feelings John has been repressing in the wake of Sherlock's faked death and return.
The Other Man by ampersand_ch (27K, Explicit, Johnlock and John/OMC) Sherlock's been acting strange. John suspects he's after something in particular, but it's not what John wants. Or is it? An adventure full of traps, tricks, and misunderstandings leads the two of them on a rocky and painful road to each other.
The Sacred Bond by ampersand_ch (42K, Explicit, Johnlock) A series of mysterious deaths among priests puts John and Sherlock onto the trail of an ancient, secret brotherhood. Little do they suspect how deeply their own situation is tangled up with the case.
The Semantics of Crop Circle Formation: a case study by Sherlock Holmes [unpublished] by canolacrush (41K, Mature, Johnlock) "Look at these photographs," I said, gesturing to the wall of crop circles. "What do you observe?""Crop circles," John replied."Obvious.  What else?""Are...are those intestines surrounding them?""Yes.  The majority are bovine and ovine in origin.  The farmers who have acquired these crop circles in their fields have also had a tenth of their livestock murdered and arranged thus.""Why?" John said, presumably in a rhetorical fashion.I detest rhetorical questions.  "That is what I must find out, John."
The Straw Man Fallacy by Vulgarweed (40K, Explicit, Johnlock) “Mr Holmes, I'm not in the habit of approaching . . . consultants. But you are correct. I have great faith in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And until recently, I also had faith in the rule of law. Only the second one has wavered. Three years ago my fiancé, Sgt. Neil Howie of the West Highlands Constabulary, went to investigate an anonymous report of a missing child in a remote place called Summerisle. He never communicated with me while he was there, and he never returned.”Summerisle is not a welcoming place to visitors, but it shows its best face at May Day. For ulterior motives.
Torn Stitches by AggressiveWhenStartled (35K, Explicit, Johnlock) The trick to being with Sherlock Holmes, John mused, was to always keep in mind that he wouldn’t actually murder you and wear your skin as a suit. “I can see the appeal,” Sherlock was murmuring to him over the peeled body, much to the horror of any yarders in earshot. “I often find it surprisingly difficult to get inside your head. It might be cathartic to do in a more literal sense.”John snorted. “With your curls? Our killer didn’t even clean this poor bugger out properly, just pulled him on gore and all. You’d be picking bits of me out of your hair for weeks afterwards.”
Traitor’s Gate by roane (17K, Explicit, Johnlock) John and Sherlock go undercover at a top secret government lab to find out who is selling research. John is back in uniform and Sherlock is back in a laboratory, but they have to pose as strangers. Sherlock thinks he'll have an easy time of it, but John has his doubts. It's up to them to find out who is responsible for putting a dangerous weapon in the wrong hands, and try to keep their hands off each other at the same time.
26 Pieces by Lanning (28K, Explicit, Johnlock) Mycroft gives Sherlock the apparently simple task of solving a puzzle box containing a stolen microchip. It isn't simple.
Under the Downs by Evenlodes_Friend (16K, Explicit, Johnlock) Five years after they first meet, a case in rural Sussex changes John and Sherlock's life forever.
Undercover by standbygo (15K, Explicit, Johnlock) John goes undercover to unravel a crime network.
Underground Rescue by khorazir (48K, Mature, Johnlock) All kinds of danger lurk in the disused stations of the London Underground. When Sherlock goes missing, John has to play detective to find him, while Sherlock faces demons both present and past.
What You’re Missing by kedgeree (16K, Mature, Johnlock) Sherlock always has it all figured out, but his wilful refusal to factor the influence of love into his calculations on a case makes John want to show him what he's missing.
Without a Clue by naughtyspirit (34K, Explicit, Johnlock and Mollstrade) Sherlock accepts an invitation to attend a murder mystery weekend at a hotel with John, Mycroft, Greg Lestrade, Mrs Hudson and Molly in close attendance. The theme is Cluedo and John's already worried about his costume.John's happy enough to go, but given that he's struggling through a definite desire for his flatmate, perhaps taking the room next to him wasn't wise. But pretty, definitely pretty.
Writing on the Wall by ScopesMonkey (45K, Mature, Johnlock and Mollstrade) Having returned from Wales with John injured and a betrayal looming in the background, Sherlock is refusing cases, until both John and a baffling double murder get the better of him.

Norwood Dental Clinic- Removing Braces
It might be that in your recent visit to a Norwood dental clinic, the dentist may have advised that it is time to remove your braces, or your child’s. However, you may be unsure about what comes next. It has been so long that you have been in braces that you do not know how to care for your teeth after they are removed. During your visit to the Norwood dental clinic, your dentist will explain to you the dos and don’ts. We have also listed a few things that you can expect.
When it comes to correcting your bite issues with braces, there are several steps to go through. The first one is to meet with your local Norwood dental clinic dentist for him or her to assess your smile and determine how complex of a treatment process you need. Then, you’ll be fitted and will wear your braces for the duration of the time deemed necessary by your orthodontic specialist. Once they come off, the process still isn’t over, though. What are the steps for after braces care?
What Happens After Your Braces are Removed?
What takes place after your braces are removed is just as vital as the process to correct your bite. That’s because the underlying bone will not have permanently formed around the new location of your teeth. Thus, you’ll need help to maintain the results you’ve so patiently waited on.
This is done with retainers, which come in two forms:
Fixed Retainers – This type of retainer is usually made as a thin wire that’s worn across the back of the lower or upper teeth. They are bonded using cement that’s like the kind used to affix the brackets of your braces.
Removable Retainers – The other type your dentist may recommend is the removable retainer. It consists of a wire going across the front of the lower or upper teeth held in place with a combination of acrylic material and hooks that insert at the back of your teeth.
How to Care for Retainers
Another very important part of the process of correcting your bite is the maintenance of your retainers which involves visiting your dentist. He or she is an asset that you should take advantage of by maintaining regular visits. While there, a professional will check for cavities and will perform a thorough cleaning. The trained hygienist will also inspect in and around the area where the retainers attach to ensure that you’ll have beautiful and healthy teeth after the process is done.
You should also have a strategy for cleaning retainers. You can use the following methods:
A mixture of vinegar and water
Denture cleaning tablets
A mouth sore rinse
What if I Don’t Want to Wear Retainers?
Failure to wear your retainers will negate all the benefits you received from wearing your braces and will leave your teeth in a state of flux. To fight the chances of any relapse, you’ll need to wear your retainers for around a year, but your dentist will make the final decision based on your specific needs.

League Two Betting: Forest Green to restrain Norwood

League Two Betting: Forest Green to restrain Norwood Please share.
Honours could well be even at the New Lawn, says Ian Lamont, who goes for big odds wins for Grimsby and Macclesfield, plus goals at the Broadfield…
Expect a tight affair, even with Cooper’s sub subs
Forest Green [2.4] v Tranmere [3.4]; the draw [3.6]
Striker James Norwood is full of the joys of being the underdog in Tranmere’s run so far this season. They come into this game in sixth place although it’s a bit early to tell whether they can maintain a promotion push. Often, teams work sides out in the second half of a season, or the momentum stalls.
Rovers are in particularly fine form, with one defeat in 11 games. They are definitely no pushovers, rarely conceding more than once a game. The only time they have done so in that run is the three at Morecambe. Six clean sheets in that time, including the last two. Opta point out they haven’t had three in a row since January 2013.
Do they play with more freedom on their travels? Play more expansively? There are certainly more goals (12) in their away games than at home (5).
But even though Norwood has eight goals this season and Harvey Gilmour has three in the two matches before Saturday’s goalless draw at Yeovil, this is likely to revert to a low scoring game – and a draw at that.
Apart from the fact Micky Mellon’s side have four draws away, a big reason for making the argument is Forest Green’s six home draws and 6-5 goal difference.
Home manager Mark Cooper was linked with the Brentford position on the back of the work he has achieved at Forest Green, taking them to promotion 18 months ago and this season pushing them to the top echelons of League Two.
Cooper was “disappointed” with his side’s first half performance in the 1-1 draw with Cheltenham, castigated his defence and said they were too quick to get forward. Cautious, it seems, has served them well.
Substitutes Gavin Gunning, Reece Brown and Tahvon Campbell, introduced early in the second half, clearly pressed their claims for a start, changing the momentum and finding an equaliser. Tranmere, like Saturday’s visitors, will surely attack. Both sides will battle. A point each? Sounds more than likely.
Mariners win would put Jolley on the map
Grimsby [3.6] v Colchester [2.24]; the draw [3.6]
What would be the biggest surprise of this round of fixtures? The layers have Grimsby at second-longest odds of the night at home (Morecambe are [4.3]). It would be a surprise if the Mariners could defeat Colchester.
However, Michael Jolley’s men do have some momentum after two wins and a draw, all without conceding a goal. The draw came against high-flying Exeter, who have been free scoring.
That was largely down to keeper James McKeown, who saved a penalty, but also down to the defence which restricted their visitors to all other chances off target – and there were 11 of them, while Grimsby had 13 off-target ones themselves. They only managed one on target, something Wes Thomas and Charles Vernam need to address. Opta state that Thomas has three goals in his last four appearances against Colchester – and in the Football League he’s only netted more against Crewe (5).
John McGreal’s Colchester have been tough to beat away, with one defeat but also four draws. Grimsby have won once at home but it is amazing, after five games without a goal, what a little run of form does for confidence.
The hosts’ difficulty in restraining the U’s will be that the visitors have scored in all but one game this season. If they have done the sensible thing and stayed in a hotel in the north for a few nights after their 1-0 win at Morecambe, they will be less tired and better bonded. But football clubs are rarely afford such luxuries.
They have fine players such as Sam Szmodics and Frank Nouble who could pick Grimsby open. But maybe the hosts can sneak a victory and start to prove the doubters about the manager – who include me – wrong.
Silkmen could battle to another victory
Macclesfield [3.0] v Northampton [2.6]; the draw [3.6]
Keith Curle is keeping tight lipped about the fitness of some key players ahead of the game at Macclesfield, who are bottom but who found the inspiration to win, to see off – as Opta remind us – an unwanted record of 37 consecutive games in the Football League without a win (interrupted by a few years in non-league).
Some managers are only too keen to tell you – and the opposition through the media – that they have injuries. It’s all part of the game plan. But many are like the Northampton manager and prefer not to give anything away.
He reasons they have a small squad and giving away whether defenders Shay Facey, Leon Barnett and Ash Taylor are still unfit would let his opposite number figure out the team.
It is likely that Danny Whittaker and Neil Howarth, temporarily managing the Silkmen, will have put together an idea of how the Cobblers will line up, with or without that trio.
Midfielder Matt Crooks will be back from suspension, while Curle was purring about Hakeem Odoffin, a 20-year-old defender who started under Curle for the first time, making his sixth league start. He is backing his team-mates to bounce straight back. Curle believes it will take his side a while to build the necessary understanding in the final third.
As for the hosts, Peter Vincenti wouldn’t have joined the promoted Moss Rose club if he felt they were going to be relegation fodder, I am sure. The experienced campaigner netted the winner over Curle’s old club Carlisle on Saturday and his side are showing a bit of fight for whoever the next manager will be. They might take another win here, because Northampton have won just once in nine, which would give any opposition hope.
Expect goals to flow in Sussex
Crawley [3.1] v Exeter [2.6]; the draw [3.6]
Matty Taylor demands more of the same as against Grimsby from Exeter as they travel to Crawley, presumably with one exception: he’d like them to shoot on target. Of 14 shots against the Mariners, one was on target – and that a penalty which was saved.
Spot kick taker Pierce Sweeney, then, will be one player who wants to do better. His defensive counterparts, led by Aaron Martin and Dean Moxey, all received rave reviews for their performances.
However, the Grecians couldn’t find the back of the net which is unusual for them – the first time in seven games they had failed. Maybe Jayden Stockley felt that pressure to keep being better than Harry Kane and Mo Salah, having outscored them in the year so far.
He’ll get that monkey off his back soon enough, but even if Exeter do score – which seems likely – they are very probably going to see goals the other way. The visitors might only have conceded five times away, just like Lincoln and MK Dons who also occupy the top three, but Crawley have netted 17 at home, a tally which is only bettered by Colchester’s 19.They have scored in all their home games. Only in August against Stevenage did they keep it to one. Gabriele Cioffi has not curbed the attacking instincts instilled under Harry Kewell, and why would he?
Defender Joe Maguire couldn’t help but join the fun on Saturday, starting early by netting against Newport in the first minute for his first goal of the season. Well, ever, in fact in the Football League. But then the 22-year-old has only made 13 appearances, for the Reds and Fleetwood. Ollie Palmer has eight for the season already and if both sides attack as they should at the Broadfield Stadium, another game of over 3.5 goals beckons. It’s available at [3.4].

The Gorilla
They say the first step is admitting that you have a problem. And I have a big one.
My name is Larry Goldstein, and I am a Buffalo sports fan.
My wife periodically asks me why I do this to myself, why I willingly, almost joyfully, endure this unending misery - and my answer is always the same: BECAUSE I HAVE NO CHOICE. When you are from Western New York, you don’t just up and leave your teams. They’re part of who you are, for worse or for worser. And right now, it’s the worsest. But that’s the circle of life for a Buffalo sports fan in the last almost-2-decades: mediocre, bad, awful, clap, clap, turn to the right, turn to the left, repeat. Jan also says that being a Buffalo fan is like rooting for the goat in Jurassic Park. Well, maybe someday that goat will prevail. Someday. Come on, goat.
And the thing is, when the Bills or Sabres finally win it all (I’ll pause here for a moment to let you all get that huge belly laugh out), I just know we will be the most insufferable bastards on the face of the Earth. But it will be justified. How many late-night show monologues have included Bills jokes over the years? How many television shows have inserted subtle barbs about the chances of Buffalo winning the Super Bowl? And holy shit, have you seen the movie Buffalo 66? I know Vincent Gallo is a Buffalo guy, and it’s a great movie, but for the love of Fred Smerlas, could he make it look any more depressing to be a Buffalo fan? So we have a lot of pent-up defensiveness that will explode with the heat of a thousand suns (and an infinite number of middle fingers to the world) when that sublime day comes that a Buffalo team actually wins something.
Notice I haven’t really said much about our beloved hockey team, the Sabres. That’s because no one around the country even cares about them enough to say anything. And that’s almost worse. They are simply not a factor. Awesome.
Tumblr media
Don’t hang your heads guys, there’s always next year. Okay, hang your heads.
And now we have hit unprecedented territory: the owner of both teams, Our Savior Terry Pegula, has cleaned house on both franchises. So there’s not even anybody around right now. They’re embarking on the unheard-of “Double GM Search”, which feels like the kind of phrase that should be yelled loudly in a high school gym with a whole bunch of greaser kids doing a hand jive-type dance immediately following those words.
It’s gotten so bad the Bills are now mostly known for their rowdy tailgating videos, which almost always end with someone getting power bombed through a folding table. We don’t have the horrible fight videos that seem to emerge weekly from every Raiders/49ers/Eagles game. We just have parking lot sex, guys catching on fire, and pro wrestling shenanigans. I guess that’s better than a brawl though, right?
I actually didn’t even out start a Buffalo sports fan. My parents were huge Bills and Sabres fans, but little Larry was too busy bandwagoning over the 1980 Steelers, Lakers, Phillies and whoever else was winning championships at the time. But that’s what kids do. They root for the best, hometown be damned.
But at some point I realized “Hey, I’m from here, I don’t live in LA or Pittsburgh, these are my teams, and that’s how it has to be.” And I’m really glad I did that, because bonding over (and bitching about) the local sports teams was something that my parents and I shared for so many years, so I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Tumblr media
Ugh. Yup, he’s ours.
But this is tough now, man. Really tough. Like American Ninja Warrior tough, if I had to navigate that course drunk, and in a giant T-Rex costume. And every few years, some city ends its historic drought: first it was Boston (don’t even get me started), then Cleveland, then Chicago. And I was super happy for all of them when they got the monkey off their backs. But what about us? That monkey is now a fucking 500-pound gorilla that sits on us and beats our faces in from September to April. Then we somehow heal up and get hypnotized over the summer into thinking that “this year will be different”, until that damn gorilla comes around again, pounding his stupid chest and beating some sense into us. Damn gorilla.
Don’t get me wrong; we’ve had our moments. The historic Super Bowl run of the early 90’s was fantastic – I was in college at the time, which was perfect, because I had yet to be weighed down by the responsibilities of being an actual adult. It was pretty much all bars, gym, bars, wings, classes, bars, repeat. But still, would it have killed God to let Scott Norwood’s kick go about 10 feet to the left that fateful night?
Tumblr media
And that’s another thing (getting more worked up, maybe writing this isn’t as therapeutic as I thought), why are we the only city that has our humiliating defeats graced with actual names?!?
Wide Right®
Music City Miracle™
No Goal©
For fuck’s sake, can’t we catch a break? A buddy of mine is a football agent. Every year I freakin’ beg him to try to bring some of his best players to Buffalo so we can end this awful, league-worst 17-year playoff drought. And more years than I can count, he just laughs as yet another one of his Bills clients takes off for the greener pastures of, well, actual green grass instead of snowdrifts as high as they are. And playoff games as well. The circle of life strikes again.
Almost every year since I moved to Atlanta in 1994, I’ve watched Bills games with fellow Western New Yorkers at whatever the local “Bills Backers” bar was that particular year. It’s great – you meet new people, complain about the fact that there’s no Bison Dip in Georgia, you know, general bonding. I even take my son there. I tell people it builds his character. He’s learning about never-ending pain and soul-crushing disappointment at an early age – this kid’s character will be He-Man strong when he’s older. He has a few Bills and Sabres jerseys; he knows a few player names. And part of me actually feels bad. Like I’m doing my son a disservice, holding him back from being able to enjoy sports in the future. I FEEL LIKE A BAD PARENT. Damn, when your hometown teams make you feel like you are actually harming your child, that’s pretty bad.
Tumblr media
But dammit, we have THIS. And this is THE BEST. So there.
But we go. And we go. And we go. And I hold out hope that someday, when I am a toothless, crotchety old man, I will finally be able to celebrate a Bills or Sabres championship with my son, daughter, and maybe even grandkids. And it will be incredible. And I will cry. And drop tons of f-bombs, and angrily flip off all of the nurses in the assisted living facility. And we will attend the victory parade. All of us. Well, not sure about my wife. She has made a side career out of Buffalo sports jokes, so I’m on the fence as to whether she will be invited. She’s funny though, I’ll give her that. But she’ll see, they’ll all see - THAT DAMN GOAT WILL WIN SOMEDAY. And it will be glorious.

Things to Know About Dental Implants
What are Dental Implants?
Think of dental implants as artificial tooth roots, similar in shape to screws. When dental implants are placed in your jawbone, they bond with your natural bone. They become a sturdy base for supporting one or more artificial teeth, called crowns.
A connector – known as an abutment – is placed on top of the dental implant to hold and support your crowns. The crowns are custom-made to match your natural teeth and fit your mouth.
Modern dental implants have been used successfully for over 30 years. They are the strongest devices available to support replacement teeth – and even better, they allow these new teeth to feel, look and function naturally.
When performed by a trained and experienced dental implant dentist, dental implant surgery is one of the safest and most predictable procedures in dentistry.
Who can benefit from Dental Implants?
Dental implants can be a smart choice for adults of all ages, whether you were born without a tooth or have had to have teeth removed due to injury, infection or decay. They can also be an option for adolescents, once facial growth and development has been completed. Generally, this occurs around age 16 for girls and age 18 for boys.
The advantages of Dental Implants.
Here are four important advantages of dental implants, compared to alternatives such as dentures and bridges:
You’ll look and feel great. Dental implants feel, look, fit and function like healthy, natural teeth. They’re so comfortable you don’t have to think about them. You brush and floss them just like you do your natural teeth – no need to remove them for cleaning. They also help you retain your natural face shape and smile.
They’re built to last. Dental implants that are properly cared for can last many decades. Many other options, including certain types of dental bridges and dentures, may need to be replaced as often as every 5 to 10 years, requiring a more significant investment of time and money.
You can live life with confidence. Your dental implants will be secure, so they won’t slip or click when you talk, eat or laugh. You’ll also find that your speech is more natural. With dental implants, you’ll have the peace of mind to eat what you love, say what you want to say, be as active as you want and smile broadly.
They protect facial bone and healthy teeth. Leaving empty spaces in your mouth after losing one or more teeth can lead to health issues such as jawbone deterioration. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that actually helps stimulate bone growth and prevent bone loss. Getting dental implants as soon as possible after losing a tooth helps prevent bone loss at the site. Also, dental implants don’t require grinding down adjacent teeth to anchor bridges or attach partial dentures.
